ACM Awards Reactions

After two years away, the 57th ACM Awards made a return to Las Vegas last Monday (3/7) with two key differences – a relocation to Allegiant Stadium and a broadcast made available only via Amazon Prime streaming. Country Aircheck asked radio pros in attendance and watching at home to weigh in on the experience. • KSCS/Dallas APD/afternoon host Al Farb: This was the best country music awards show in recent memory. The production was spot on, and the sound was perfect, but I wanted more Dolly Parton! Jimmie Allen was the hands-down best host of any country awards show in recent Al Farb memory. Morgan Wallen’s win was very much deserved, his speech was from the heart and it was great to see him back on television. Any mention of Country radio is appreciated, but on a show with no commercials, showing videos of the winners’ reactions without labeling them or recognizing them individually was disappointing. Charli McKenzie • WNCY/Green Bay-Appleton, WI MD/ morning co-host Charli McKenzie: We learned you can do awards shows in two hours! I was a little shocked the Academy didn’t give “Buy Dirt” one of the Song or Single of the Year awards, and I also felt Chris Young got robbed. I was also a little upset with the way TJ [Osborne] handled his acceptance speech. We had listeners calling Nate Deaton and chewing us out, even after we had played [the Brothers Osborne single] 1,300 times! But, this is the most I have enjoyed the ACM Awards in a long time. • KRTY/San Jose GM Nate Deaton: My wife and I were in Allegiant, and it was the absolute worst in-person experience ever. It’s not completely wrong, but that was made in fun, in the moment. Some people in radio have been really, really great to us. Not entirely, and that’s okay, so we keep pushing and try to persevere. What has kept us going for the past eight years are these Parker McCollum [awards]. It has kept wind in our sails ... what it does for us as people that are constantly fighting what we feel like is an uphill battle ... is a lot bigger than what I think people actually know.” –

OFF THE RECORD Off The Record with Records’ Erin Kinsey: I learned just how much I love to perform live during the pandemic. I’ve always loved to write songs and — luckily, thanks to Zoom — could still have plenty of writing sessions. But man, I missed shows with live crowds. The radio station I listened to growing up was [KPLX/Dallas]. It was (and still is) my hometown Country station, and it truly was the place I fell in love with country music. Probably where I fell in love with music ERIN KINSEY in general. The first time I heard myself on the radio was this past fall on [SiriusXM] The Highway’s On The Horizon. The last several years, I’ve listened to a mixture of FM, XM and my own playlists, and my go-to XM station is The Highway. It was surreal to hear a song of mine on a show I have heard so many of my inspirations on. Also, to hear Buzz Brainard introduce my song was crazy! “Just Drive” is my first radio single, and even though it’s a driving summer song, it couldn’t be more personal to my story. I absolutely love Paramore, and I have driven a white Toyota 4Runner since I got my license. The mixture of fun country lyrics with big electric guitars and drums helps me connect with fun parts of my artistry like playing the electric guitar in my live show and a throwback to when I was in drumline in high school. I wrote the song with two amazing guys that haven’t had a single taken to Country radio yet either, so we’re all just so excited for the world to hear our song! One of my favorite songs of all time is “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert and written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin. It was the first song to make me cry, because I could truly see every word they wrote like a movie in my head. That kind of detail in the lyrics is what I strive for in my own writing. My favorite song at Country radio right now is probably “‘Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson. There are so many fun songs in country music, and a lot of songs that are there for you on your bad days, but this song is one I try to listen to as much as possible because of the important sentiment behind it. Even though it’s a deeper topic, it’s still one I can’t get enough of. My current binge show is — you’re gonna laugh — Master Chef. I love hearing all the contestants’ stories and how they use the same ingredients a million different ways. Also, Gordon Ramsey is so funny. In 2022, you can expect more music, more shows and plenty more pictures of my German Shepherd Chewy on Instagram. I can’t believe a song of mine will be out on Country radio! It’s been such a bucket list moment for me, and I feel so lucky I get to cross it off.

I love working with all of them and with other artists in general ... so I’m definitely down to do it again.” –Jason Aldean on continuing his track record of success with male-female duets. Jason Aldean “The bigger the better, you know what I’m saying?! About the hair and the awards!” –Wilson on her styling for the evening and picking up three trophies in the process. “There’s so much talent, and it’s insane that we would win this thing five years in a row. Congratulations to Parker McCollum, Royce Risser, Katie Dean, David Friedman, Chris Schuler and the MCA promotion team on landing McCollum’s second No. 1 with “To Be Loved By You.” Songwriters are Rhett Akins and McCollum. With fellow Texan Cody Johnson landing at No. 2 this week, this is the first time Texas acts Parker McCollum have held the top two positions since the week of Jan. 26, 2001 when Lonestar’s “Tell Her” was No. 2 and The Chicks held the top spot with “Without You.” This week sees a chart first as “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” by Carly Pearce & Ashley McBryde moves into the top 10. With “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” by Elle King & Miranda Lambert at No. 4, this is the first time there has ever been two female/female duets in the top 10 simultaneously. The stage at the back of the stadium meant performances were unwatchable [from the floor]. The show was well-paced and featured mostly excellent performances from artists who sound like Country radio does today, but where was Old Dominion? This is going to be controversial, but does anyone beside the [radio winners] and their listeners really care if they’re acknowledged? [Winners should be making] a big deal about it in their own markets. • WGKX/Memphis APD/MD/midday personality Kay Manley: Almost everyone thanked Country radio, unlike at the CMA Awards, but the Academy’s acknowledgement of radio left something to be desired. The show looked great from my recliner! The sound was spotty at times, but there was tons of music,

and I liked that more artists were given an opportunity to perform. I was thrilled to see Lainey Wilson win for Song. The setting was too big, and it took too long for winners to get to the stage, but overall, I liked it. • Silverfish Pres. and Big D & Bubba Exec. Prod./co-host Patrick Thomas: The sound was great, but I was disappointed in some of the production elements. When the general public is Kay Manley making comments on social media about how empty the stadium looks, that is a problem. I also wish it hadn’t been scheduled as the same time as the C2C so we could have had Miranda [Lambert], Luke [Combs] and Darius [Rucker]. Morgan Wallen’s speech was humble, honest and thoughtful ... and he was dressed exactly like the Prince from Beauty And The Beast! This Patrick Thomas was definitely the best in a while. • Westwood One VP/GM Network Formats George King: I thoroughly enjoyed the non-stop entertainment. The production, and especially the sound, was incredible! Breland with Thomas Rhett was one of my favorite performances, Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope You Dance” gave me chills and Carly Pearce with Ashley McBryde was acoustically amazing. Album of the Year went to who it was supposed George King to, but I must’ve blinked and missed the acknowledgement of the radio winners by the ACM. If Prime can reproduce that quality, it doesn’t matter where they do the show. • WXTU/Philadelphia afternoon personality Nicole Michalik: I was curious how it would differ not being on network television, but it felt the same. Breland with Thomas Rhett was my favorite, the hosts were great together and the Nicole Michalik stadium looked pretty good. I was surprised to see Miranda Lambert win Entertainer. I was obviously happy to see a woman win but thought it was going to be Luke Combs. This was up there as one of the best awards shows. How can you not love no commercials?! • WXCY/Wilmington, DE PD/MD/morning host Tyler Daniel: I was in the stadium but didn’t like the experience. Having a seat close to the front only to find out a majority of the performances were going to be in the upper deck was a bit foolish. I was surprised by Miranda winning Entertainer – did she have any sort

of tour last year? – and the face of the format, Luke Combs, was [absent]. Overall, the show was “meh” for me, and it ranks pretty low among recent years. • WGAR/Cleveland PD/morning host Carletta Blake: It was well produced, and I enjoyed the shorter format ... especially since I do mornings! Doing awards back-to-back was Tyler Daniel enjoyable. Kelly Clarkson, Walker Hayes and Breland all had stand-out performances, and the fireworks going off behind Thomas Rhett during “Slow Down Summer” were aesthetically pleasing. Jimmie Allen is a star, and I vote he gets to host everything! There were a couple hiccups, but for a first show, I was happy. • WUBE/Cincinnati APD/afternoon personality Jesse Tack: Seeing production workers in shots was distracting. I was excited Carletta Blake to see Walker Hayes, but it was odd seeing fans walking directly behind and in front of him while he was singing. The hosts did well, yet I find myself partial to having a single host for cohesion. The stadium was too large to accommodate a tightly produced broadcast. [Most viewers] probably don’t care about radio winners, but the love you give radio people can go a long way. I liked the shorter Jesse Tack run-time, and I love how the party theme separates ACMs from the CMAs. Overall, it was average, but I applaud the thought and creativity that went into many of the decisions. • Nights With Elaina host Elaina Smith: I was excited about the fast pace. While they’re always fun, awards shows can feel tedious during commercials. I cried during Kelly Clarkson’s performance, Carrie Underwood Elaina Smith coming down from the ceiling literally took my breath away, and I couldn’t not dance during Breland’s performance. I liked the enormity of the stadium and loved the multiple stages instead of remote performances, as it gave a different vibe and cool visual. This was my favorite ACM Awards yet. Being back in person was incredible, the team was top notch, the red carpet was a next-level production, the host was a living legend and my date was hot! I am just so grateful for the entire experience. Next year, let’s just make sure it isn’t immediately following CRS. –Monta Vaden CAC
