CRS Research: Going Deeper

Highly anticipated every year, the CRS Research Presentation has been impactful enough to create noticeable shifts within the format. This year’s version, “The Road Forward” presented by NuVoodoo Media, surveyed more than 3,000 listeners in unearthing so much information, one viewing likely meant missing a lot. Country Aircheck spoke with NuVoodoo EVP/Research & CoFounder Leigh Jacobs and Big Machine GM and CRS Research Committee Chair Clay Hunnicutt – who’ve been immersed in the data for weeks – for clarity on key takeaways. They’ve Got Personality: Contrasting results from two questions stood out in a related way to Jacobs. When respondents were asked if they thought they would hear more songs they liked on FM radio or via DSP, the DSPs were favored at 64%. But when asked if they preferred to listen to music on FM or DSP, FM won 53% to 47%. “If we pare it down to just a playlist, we’re on equal footing Leigh Jacobs with technology that’s coming to the fight with a lot more armament than we have,” Jacobs says. “Having that human element makes it just that much more relatable. It’s that added value that stations provide.” The data further confirmed air talent to be an essential factor for radio (see graph page 10). A full 57% felt that DJs make listening a more enjoyable experience, while only 8% felt Clay Hunnicutt stations would be better without them. “Were air personalities as important as we thought they were?” asks Hunnicutt. “This came back with a resounding ‘yes,’ and that’s a huge point of differentiation for the radio side. And you see the DSPs responding to that with what they’re trying to do.” Solid Gold: Hunnicutt points out another surprisingly strong result in the research: the power of the gold category. “We’ve always heard that Country’s appeal is [ages] ‘8 to 80,’” he says, pointing to high scores for all eras of music across the (continued on page 8)

On Cloud Kline: 19th & Grand’s Tenille Arts (l) and producer Alex Kline celebrate the first Top 10 song that was both produced and performed by solo women, “Somebody Like That,” on International Women’s Day. Check out Kline’s “My Tunes” here.

Antman’s Post-Radio Podcast

On the day of his exit from iHeartMedia, former KASE & KVET/ Austin PD Anthony ”Antman” Allen was discussing the idea of starting a podcast with industry vet Skip Bishop. Although Allen had given the idea some thought in the past, he wasn’t sure what he’d talk about. “I didn’t want to do one for Allen (l) with Granger Smith. the sake of doing one,”

he says. So, Bishop threw out an idea: incorporate his passion for photography with the relationships he’d built in the industry. The rest is browser history. “We’re always looking for new ways to connect in a real, tangible way with those we admire or find encouraging that live their life in the public eye,” begins Allen. “Clearly, there’s a certain filmy barrier to social media that leaves us wondering what’s real and what’s presented through a filter.” Call Me Maybe: Drawing from his background in photography and connection with artists strengthened by a 23-year radio career, Picture This! features guests picking 10-12 photos that spark a memory they then A few of Rice’s photos. share. The podcast launched Feb. 9 with Chase Rice, who reminisced about his time on Survivor, writing songs with Florida Georgia Line at the beginning of their careers “because no one else would give us a chance” and what he learned facing backlash from video taken at a concert during the pandemic. Watch Rice’s episode here, Dustin Lynch here and Granger Smith here. “The guests that have been on the podcast already, their numbers are in my phone,” Allen emphasizes. “I’m not saying that in a bragging way, but because they weren’t a PR set-up. They were a phone call telling them the idea and them saying yes to their friend.” Without his years in radio, Allen isn’t sure those connections, and the podcast itself, could have happened. “It’s led me to a place of trust with many of our guests, connected me with people behind the scenes I may have never met and, not to mention, helped me provide for my family.” He admits radio was a “great education full of successes, heartbreaks, triumphs and failures.” Pod Couple: Starting a podcast was “like a jumbled plate of spaghetti,” he jokes. “The twists and turns have been endless. We’ll get to one part and think, ‘Haven’t we already been here?’ and the answer is yes. A couple of times, as a matter of fact. But, it’s part of the process. The challenges are what makes this fun.” Allen exited iHeartMedia in November, launched Picture This! Feb. 9 and “there’s not a day in those 81 I didn’t touch something that had to do with this new venture.” Allen reiterates the need for “champions,” those who get the idea and vision, see what you don’t and will help you through challenges. “I’ve used this quote a few times, but it’s so applicable here: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together!’” Goals and hopes for the podcast are still forming in its infancy: “We’ve got several more diaper changes in our future.” He continues, “But, we see the potential. We see the unique qualities that keep the audience’s interest, and we’re excited about where it’s going.” Hopefully that future includes a visit from Allen’s dream guest: Dwayne The Rock Johnson. “He’s a great storyteller, and I’m sure has a plethora of photos to choose from.” As to whether or not he sees himself returning to radio, Allen never says never. “Radio wasn’t gone the day iHeart and I parted ways. Radio, or the idea of radio – the one that was there when we fell in love – had been slowly moving stuff out of the house every day for 23 years. I miss what it used to be. But, this time, I don’t see us getting back together.” Reach Allen here; watch and listen to Picture This! here. —Caitlin DeForest ©2021 Countr y Aircheck™ — All rights reser ved. WI TH A look at how Big Machine signee Callista Clark is spending her Quaran-Time: I learned a lot of patience in 2020 in my personal and professional life. I learned to continue to focus on myself and my craft and take those moments to be as creative as I could. I don’t have much of a routine, but my quarantine has involved a lot of coffee, yoga, songwriting, singing, journaling and Zoom meetings. I’ve always loved thrifting, but I’ve been doing way more of it than usual! I’ve been using a bunch of thrifting apps and finding some super cool clothes from thrift stores in Nashville. I’m not going out and experiencing life as much as before the pandemic, so in a way, there is less to write about. On the other hand, when I do write or journal, I have way more time to do it, so I tend to be more focused. I love to go live on my socials. It’s super fun, and I try to post every day. Whether it’s a cover I’m loving that day, new music, hair tutorials or even a selfie. I’ve also been spending a ton of time on TikTok. I love that app right now. It feels like a super cool way to be even more personal about my dayto-day life with my fans and followers.

I have been doing everything on Zoom. Literally everything. I’m thankful to have such a great resource to rely on so my project hasn’t been fully stopped. I’m getting to talk to amazing people across the country, even as far as the UK, all from my music room in my house. I have been binge-watching America’s Next Top Model on Hulu for a while now. I’m trying to get through all of the seasons, but I also am loving Next In Fashion on Netflix. That’s a super cool one. My go-to snack lately has been either coffee, which isn’t technically a snack, Clif Bars, or Cheez-Its. At first, I thought this quarantine was going to present an obstacle for me and my career. I had been working on this project with my team since I was 14, and the time finally came for me to release … and the world shut down. Honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way at this point. I have gotten to take the time to get better at things I probably wouldn’t have if it weren’t for quarantine. Even as simple as looking into the camera on Zoom helps me with performing in person and really connecting with my audience.

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Niko Moon, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese, Lauren Thomas and the RCA promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1. “Good Time” is the first debut single from a new artist on RCA to top the chart since Old Dominion’s “Break Up With Him” did the trick on November 9, 2015. Songwriters are Anna Moon, Jordan Minton, Joshua Murty, Mark Trusell and Moon.

With its move to No. 10 this week, “Somebody Like That” becomes the first top 10 hit for both Tenille Arts and the 19th & Grand imprint. Additionally, the song’s producer Alex Kline becomes the first solo female producer of a Country Aircheck/ Mediabase top 10. Kline charted as an artist 10 years ago as part of the group The Lunabelles with the single “A Place To Shine.” Kudos to Shane Allen and the Columbia crew on racking up 66 adds for Luke Comb’s “Forever After All.” His 11th promoted single becomes his eighth to lead the weekly add board. And finally, airplay for Morgan Wallen has grown from 278 spins three weeks ago to 360 and 454 spins the last two weeks.

Eighteen stations from smaller companies and markets – none from the top three chains – are playing Wallen titles. Renda and Summit have the most combined spins of any owner at 99 and 92, respectively. Across radio, recurrents “Chasin’ You” and “More Than My Hometown” comprise 67% of Wallen’s airplay, with his most recent single, “7 Summers,” accounting for 9% of his airplay over the past week.

CRS Research: Going Deeper (continued from page 1) demographic spectrum (see graph page 10). Hunnicutt adds, “There’s a reason the format hasn’t dissected like Rock.” Preferences were strongest for music from the last 20 years, but the ‘90s remained solid as well, with an 80% favorable rating. “We’ve seen over and over again that listeners like ‘Friends In Low Places’ along with Carly Pearce, or Reba into Luke Combs,” Hunnicutt notes. “It can all live and coexist together, you’ve just got to find the right balance.” “Country’s got such an amazing library of deeply emotional songs,” adds Jacobs. “People identify and connect with them. There’s so much love for the gold that frankly doesn’t get a lot of airplay. There’s always going to be a desire among Country audiences to hear the next great song; meanwhile, they still love ‘The Dance.’ It’s up to programmatic art to figure out how often ©2021 Countr y Aircheck™ — All rights reser ved. that actually gets played. How does it fit? When is it special?” Post Pandemic Playbook: The data can also inform programmers’ approach as vaccines rolls out, restrictions ease and life begins to resemble what preceded the pandemic. “The priority for me would be getting back to the product,” Hunnicutt says of lessons he saw in the research. “We get so caught up in [ancillary] things, when what really matters [to listeners] is whatever comes out of whatever speaker you’re listening from.” He also stressed taking advantage of as many platforms as possible to promote your station. “When hiring starts back up, I’d be hiring digital people that understand your radio station and understand how content is consumed.” To Hunnicutt, it is about much more than music. “People follow brands; it’s no different than following a football team. There’s a sense of community – a tribe mentality. Some of that has been lost – really getting down

into the dirt with the listeners on a daily basis and being connected to them.” Jacobs sees pent-up demand radio can access. “The appetite to go out and do something is mammoth,” he says. “As people are allowed out, there’s an opportunity for stations. Spotify isn’t going to be welcoming listeners back to an arena.” Further, he echoes Hunnicutt’s focus on basics. “Radio needs to think of itself as a content creation engine. Music is the stuff we use to attract people that sticks things together, but what else can you create when resources are lean? You’ve got to get the timeline in front of you as far as you can.” The official announcement is forthcoming, but Hunnicutt and Jacobs will continue unpacking this year’s research in a CRS webinar March 18. CRS registrants can watch and download “The Road Forward” here. Reach Hunnicutt here and Jacobs here.
