CRS 2022 Reactions

The return of an in-person Country Radio Seminar is just one of the reasons many attendees are still buzzing about the event. Country Aircheck asked a handful of industry pros to weigh in on the return to in-person and share their favorite sessions and takeaways. • Albright & O’Malley & Brenner VP/ Consulting Partner Kenny Jay: I enjoyed “Video Builds The Radio Star.” Chris Cruise, Nick Steele and Zack Massey have all done video at a high level, and the number of easy takeaways from a panel was the highest I can remember in my 17 years attending. Like Garth Brooks at [Fan Fair] meeting fans all those years ago, I’d sit at the mentoring breakfast until they kicked me out. • WUSJ/Jackson, MS PD/morning co-host Traci Lee: It was my first CRS, so I made a list, charts and calendars – and only used them the first half of the first day. It’s hard to plan until you experience it. I loved the panel with jocks and programmers from other formats, but I’d have to say Blake Shelton was the most compelling speaker I heard. Lon Helton did a great job, and they were so funny together! • KUZZ/Bakersfield MD/afternoon personality Kenn McCloud: I was excited to reconnect with friends and colleagues after way too long. I have takeaways from every day. I thought the “Heads Of State” sessions were great, and I couldn’t believe the room wasn’t packed for the research study. • WGH/Norfolk VP/OM/PD Eddie Haskell: Daniel Anstandig was the most compelling speaker; he’s brilliant and forward-

The first public glimpse of the pandemic’s impact on revenue at individual Country stations can be seen with 2020 billing data provided to Country Aircheck by BIA. While the ranks remained relatively steady from the previously released data (2018), all stations saw dramatic decreases in revenue, with an average decline of 27%. In 2018, a dozen Country stations topped the $10 million mark; only four repeated the feat in 2020. KILT/Houston led the pack with 2020 revenue of $14m, off 24% from 2018’s $18.5m. Audacy sister WUSN/Chicago moved up to second from a third-place finish in 2018 with just under $12m. No owner placed more than two stations in the top 10, with Audacy’s two holding the top two spots. Beasley landed in third (WXTU/Philadelphia) and eighth (WKLB/Boston), iHeartMedia landed in fourth (KEEY/Minneapolis) and ninth (WCOL/Columbus), and Cumulus’ Dallas duo of KSCS & KPLX landed in sixth and tenth, respectively. Given all available indications, revenue should pick up for 2021. No word on when that data will be released.

OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Sony/Penthouse’s Willie Jones: The first time I heard myself on the radio was “Down For It” on YoCo [WYCZAM-W244EK/Nashville]. I was by myself, the homies were in the crib and we were about to go somewhere. I was just chilling in the car, and it came on. I was not having a great day ... just in the dumps WILLIE JONES with a lot going on. It was ... weird? Actually, this is my first time telling this. I didn’t know how to feel, because at the time I did not like myself. To hear myself on the radio, something that I’ve always wanted, but here I am alone and in my head thinking I don’t even deserve it. When the homies came in the car, I didn’t tell nobody. I was by myself and felt so undeserving. Praise God for renewal of your mind, y’know what I’m sayin’? Praise God for that. “You gotta get low so you can get high.” My favorite song on the radio right now ... what’s my shit that come on and I’m like damn that’s my song? Oh, I really like “AA” by Walker Hayes. The guy’s skilled. He’s like I’m just tryna go to church, I ain’t tryna go to hell, and I just want to make sure my people [make it through], so I’m gonna write a song and play it on the Country station. I relate to that. My 2021 highlight is definitely dropping an album. That was cool, that was great, that was fine. I had the video for “American Dream” drop, and that was a little moment for me. And yeah man, I feel like 2021 while all that was happening shit was rough, y’know what I’m sayin’? But like I said, you gotta get low so you can get high. I spent time around a lot of cool people — I met a lot of cool people. I moved to Nashville. Life is great. But 2022, we gonna do all that same shit except better. We still gonna be making music, still gonna drop albums but just elevate. We still gonna go through some lows, and we gonna come out of them and be better. It’s a blessing to be doing this shit.

OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Columbia’s Kameron Marlowe: I grew up listening to 103.7 [WSOC/Charlotte]. One thing the pandemic taught me was to not take live music for granted. I learned you never know how much you love something till it’s gone. I wouldn’t say I’m the best with social media by any means, but I try and post and interact with fans as much as I can by KAMERON messaging and commenting back to them. MARLOWE The first time I heard myself in the radio was surreal. I always dreamed of getting to that point, and to finally be able to hear a song that I wrote come across the radio was special and something I’ll never forget. It hasn’t hit No. 1 yet, but damn if that happens, that will be a day I will never forget. Couldn’t do this without Country radio! I recently put out a song called “Steady Heart” — a love story between a hardened, tough man and a loving, caring woman who find their balance in life together. I’m working towards an album, and that’s been really special trying to tell my life story and have my songs relate to others. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately was in Wyoming with my buddies Tyler Farr and Wyatt McCubbin. I tried to sneak up and hop on the back of a massive mule deer … I was unsuccessful. If I could have written any song, I would choose “Just to See You Smile.” That is one of the best representations of incredible songwriting and storytelling. My favorite song on the radio right now is “Heart On Fire” by Eric Church. It’s a jam. Right now, I’m bingeing Yellowstone!

thinking. I also liked the NuVoodoo research; there was a lot of useful, actionable information presented. I’d love to see Fred Jacobs discuss the incredible inaccuracy of PPM and how it is ruining our products. I didn’t attend the “Heads Of State,” because corporate CEOs don’t care about radio, just cashflow and shareholder value. They are not leaders, so I wouldn’t be interested in anything they had to say. • Warner Music Nashville VP/Radio Anna Cage: I loved the “Heads Of State,” because they were all very relevant to my day-to-day Anna Cage job; things could get really interesting with future pairings. I loved the open dialogue between records and radio; it’s the elephant in the room, and we need to address it head on – together – so we can all come up with solutions.

• Seven Mountains/Dubois, PA Dir./ Production & Country WIFT midday personality Jeff Hunt: Chris Cruise was my favorite speaker, and “Video Builds The Radio Star” was my favorite panel, along with the Imposter Syndrome session. My standout moment was just how happy everyone was to be around their colleagues Jeff Hunt and peers again. No egos, just a whole lot of love, hugs, handshakes and high-fives. Hard to not have a full heart after that. • The Radio Fam owner Marie LeMaitre: I kept my schedule very open and flexible since it was my first year, and I wanted to get a “feel” for the event. Carla Marie and Joe Brown were incredible together during the “Rev Up Your Socials” session. Joe was a breath of fresh air – a digital salesperson Marie LeMaitre [who] actually gets it! • KWJJ/Portland morning personality Nick Steele: I had some anxiety going in, and it was always in the back of my mind to not touch too many things and wash my hands often. I got the most information out of the “Radio Punchbusters” panel, which made me think about how I will approach endorsements and writing commercials. The Nick Steele standout moment was Keith Urban destroying at Thursday’s luncheon. • WCJW/Warsaw, NY PD/morning host Jimi Jamm: All the protocols were there; I felt safe. I prioritized the on-campus things I wanted to be at, and my favorite was “Someone’s Got To Say It:

I left inspired and galvanized to rethink what I need to do for my station. • WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD/morning cohost Nikki Thomas: “Talk Data To Me” was my favorite panel, because I love research. When Jimi Jamm Jason Aldean announced Whitney Allen as an inductee to the Country Radio Hall Of Fame, her reaction was priceless. I love and respect her so much. In that same session, Aldean was honored, and hearing the stories from Nikki Thomas people whose lives have been changed by his fundraising and generosity was moving. • KKJG/San Luis Obispo, CA PD Pepper Daniels: I didn’t find the app user friendly. The research presentation was a re-tread. Yes, radio means apps, streams, etc., and you can’t buy a radio at Best Buy. Kids like the internet and don’t listen to what their parents do. Nothing new. Liz Allen Fey and Daniel Anstandig were great; I enjoyed these “Ted Talk” type sessions. I also liked the outsider perspectives in “Stand By Your Brand” and “Don’t Hate Us Cause You Ain’t Us.” Kenny Pepper Daniels Smoov saying, “Protect the audience, not the format” is one of my top takeaways. • Twitch’s Kyle King: Being my first CRS, I didn’t know what to expect, but the Kyle King

“Programming Mentoring Breakfast” was incredible. The whole experience was amazing, and I wish everyone would take the opportunity to come to CRS. It’s worth it! • Audacy Talent & KFRG/Riverside APD/ MD Heather Froglear: Because we are no longer just “radio people” but content creators, I enjoyed “Video Builds The Radio Star.” Heather During the “I’m A Fraud” session, Kyle King Froglear was motivational and inspiring. I heard zero – count ‘em, zero! – complaints during the week, and the energy was palpable. The event was incredibly organized from start to finish, and the wide array of panels was inviting. • Apple Music Country producer Joyce Rizer: I somehow missed the third-party app situation until someone told me about it in a panel! My favorite session was “Twitch/ Livestreaming For Music.” That’s something Joyce Rizer I knew almost nothing about, and I appreciated the explanation and example of a success story. Breland’s performance of “Praise The Lord” at the Warner Luncheon was my favorite. What was up with the tiny font on the badges? • BBRMG VP/Radio Syndication & Group Strategy Reneé Leymon: I appreciated the efforts CRS took to keep us safe. I’d love to continue to see sessions about what makes Reneé Rene é Leymon Country radio stand apart like, “Don’t Hate Us Cause You Ain’t Us.” I also like the “TED Talk” format of some sessions.

• ALSAC/St. Jude Dir./Country Cares Scott Hinshelwood: We had a new member of our St. Jude team who had never been to Nashville, and it was awesome seeing her reaction to seeing so many artists and performances. I enjoyed “Talk Data To Me,” and it’s always good to see the analytics about Scott Hinshelwood how many country fans still get their music from the radio. I also liked hearing more from the digital and streaming apps on their business models and data. • KDRK/Spokane, WA PD Jamie Patrick: I really liked “Video Builds The Radio Star” and the tips on how to take what I’ve already been doing to a different level. I was also fascinated by the speakers on the “Twitch/Livestreaming For Jamie Patrick Music.” I was hoping for more “how-to” than “how-great-are-we,” though. Five years from now, I will still be talking about “Paddle Royale.” • KZPK/St. Cloud, MN MD/afternoon personality Brook Stephens: I loved the multiple data sessions, and this year’s had great, passionate personalities. Taking in the three, I was able to find the common issues between them. I also had the pleasure of sitting down at a table with one of my mentors, John Brook Stephens Trapane, and Mike Dungan. I would have never experienced that if not for CRS, and will cherish that chat for years to come. • KIYK & KCIN/St. George, UT PD/morning personality Aaronee Cottam: I was sad to miss presentations because there were so many at the same time. I loved “Don’t Hate Us Cause You Ain’t Us” and “Video Builds The Radio Star.” Knowing the video session had a handout Aaronee Cottam let me enjoy the presentation instead of feverishly taking notes. Hearing Walker Hayes tell his life story at the “Believers Breakfast” was heartfelt and raw, and I left that meeting looking for ways to be a better person. • KUPL/Portland, OR APD/MD/afternoon host Danny Dwyer: CRS schedules too many great workshops at the same time, so I didn’t get to see a full panel Thursday as I was Danny Dwyer splitting them into 15-minute sessions to try to catch something. I was able to read cliff notes from the CRS Daily Buzz, and I wish I could have sat in each session a little more. All three luncheons were homeruns this year, but my favorite performance was Keith Urban. • WCJC/Marion, IN APD/afternoon host Paisley Dunn: Each of the panels were helpful, but my favorite was “Video Builds The Radio Star.” I got quite a few ideas on how to Paisley Dunn incorporate video into my day-to-day. I also loved the “I’m A Fraud” panel about Imposter Syndrome. It sparked me to focus more on me and what I do.
