Attendees Weigh In On CRS

As March dawns, most are preparing to mark one full year of “unprecedented times,” while Country radio pros are wrapping their heads around one complete online-only Country Radio Seminar. CRS 2021: The Virtual Experience concluded Feb. 19 following four days of web-based learning, connecting and advancing. Country Aircheck lets industry constituents weigh in on their experiences and takeaways from the week. • ADX WYCT/Pensacola PD/morning host Brent Lane: “I almost listened to it like a podcast. I enjoyed the Zoom session for the ‘Awards Submission Workshop,’ as I felt like Brent Lane the chat conversation was engaging, and I also learned a lot on the ‘Talk Data To Me’ panel. The performances were all good; Dan + Shay killed it! With the virtual setup, more of our team could be involved, and that was great for conversation in our building. I’d love to see some aspect of that again – $150 was an easy price point for some people who are normally not part of it. And, if I could keep something Cory Myers else from this year, it would be having Uber Eats deliver lunch to me at my house so I could eat on my couch while blasting the New Faces Show through our theater speakers.” • iHeartMedia WWYZ/Hartford MD/ morning co-host Cory Myers: “I have five kids that need me here, a husband who simply can’t live without me and a mom for whom I am a caregiver. My life is a shit show, and yet Hannah this virtual CRS allowed me to be present at Brummer seminars to get new ideas, listen to experts and finally feel like I was present in my career. Kingsley Archives Donated To Hall

The symbiotic relationship between country music and Country radio is often oversimplified, sometimes usefully. If that intersection could be reduced to an easily understood embodiment, it might not be as a place, but as a person. Spanning almost 50 years, the career of the late Bob Kingsley tells the story of country music and its people in a way that can never be duplicated. And now that body of work – that of Bob and his team at American Country Countdown and, later, Country Top 40 – have been ensconced in the place devoted to preserving and telling the broader story of country music, the Country Bob Kingsley Music Hall of Fame and Museum. But it

took the foresight of Bob and his wife and business partner Nan Kingsley, as well as some fortuitous corporate cost-cutting, to make the donation possible. “We never got rid of anything,” Nan says, describing a room in their Weatherford, Texas studio building filled with stacks of reel-to-reel tapes, as well as DATs and other Nan Kingsley media. “The shows were originally done that way,” she says. “And we’ve been digitizing for years. We’re down to only about three years that have not been digitized. “These are the work product – the interviews, which are the most valuable asset we ever had,” she says. “The thought of it not being preserved was pretty scary.” The “Kingsley Collection” adds more than 3,200 interviews to the museum’s prodigious archival holdings that include 250,000 audio recordings; 40,000 moving images; 500,000 photographs; more than 650 extensive oral histories; and 5,000 linear feet of printed materials. While Kingsley’s archives include interviews with almost 50 Country Music Hall of Famers, the list goes deeper than country music’s big names to include producers, songwriters, label executives and more. Some of the artists Kingsley included are all but forgotten – except by the Kingsley trove. “Bob never said no to a label and some artists never made it into the top 40,” Nan says. “We’ve got those interviews.” Amassing and preserving the collection was much more than afterthought to the Kingsleys. “We had long conversations with our attorney about this,” Nan says. “Every time we wanted more money, we had to give something up, but that was the one thing Bob would never surrender.” That diligence may be partly in reaction to an early and fateful decision when the show was still owned by Watermark. “They asked, ‘Do you want to own the show name or do you want a $25-per-week raise?’” Nan says. “He took the money. I said to him, ‘If I’d been around back then, trust me, you would not have gotten that raise.’” That decision, of course, came into play in 2006 when ABC Radio-owned ACC hired a new host and Kingsley struck out on his own with CT40. Organizing the collection is underway. “Each item will be inventoried, assigned an accession number and entered into our collections database,” says CMHoF&M VP/Museum Services Brenda

Colladay. “We are fortunate that Bob and Nan not only kept detailed records of every show and every interview, but they invested in digitization of the recordings and have provided digital files.” Over time, the collection will be made available as part of the museum’s free online digital archives. “The digital files and the Kingsley’s meticulous documentation make the collection accessible from day one,” Colladay says. “The process of digitizing a collection this size would have taken the museum years, so we are very grateful. Brenda Colladay “Many artists were interviewed year after year, and the conversations captured will serve to document their careers, in their own voices,” Colladay says, noting early interviews with Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and Ricky Skaggs. “I am certain the museum will find many ways to include these recordings in our exhibitions, special projects, public programs and educational initiatives. No doubt they will be of great interest to scholars, as well.” Everyone who benefits from the collection can thank, at least in part, some corporate penny-pinching. “I have an email I got from Cumulus sometime in the ‘90s,” Nan explains. “They had all these tapes of interviews and shows in Iron Mountain storage in Dallas and said they weren’t going to pay to store them anymore. Did we want them? Our ranch hand took the horse trailer and filled it up with boxes. We kept it all in a 3,000 square-foot room in the Weatherford studio we originally intended as a soundstage.” Now properly preserved for posterity, the Kingsleys’ stewardship of the stories so many people shared with Bob is complete. “It’s a relief to not have to be responsible for it anymore,” Nan says. “What we got to experience is an honor. WI TH A look at how Monument’s Caitlyn Smith is spending her Quaran-Time: The biggest lesson of 2020 was flexibility. Being able to let go of control and just be. I’m such a planner, and our 2020 was set up to be pretty exciting and busy. Having it all end up cancelled was devastating. Not being able to get out there and do what we love most was heartbreaking. I took it one day at a time and got really good at going really small. Putting energy into beautiful home cooked meals and time with my husband and kids. I took a lot of longs walks and did my best to embrace the slow down. The space that was created by lockdown was actually a wonderful awakening — these small moments are rich and extremely life-giving. I’ve been able to stay creative and have been writing a few times a week since we got pulled off the road last March. I tend to go a little crazy sitting still, and writing has been such an awesome outlet. My favorite social media platform is Instagram. We switched to virtual performances last year and also started an IG Live conversation series, Lonely Together, pulling in guests and talking about their creative process and what inspires them. The goal was to be a bright light to

folks during this really weird time. When it comes to promoting new music and projects, it’s virtual everything, baby! Living my best “Zoom life” for all the interviews, filming live performances in my living room and doing my best to connect with fans on socials. I just finished Yellowstone and am obsessed. Also read Aimee Mayo’s new book, Talking To the Sky, in just a couple days ... so good. I haven’t read anything that fast since Harry Potter! My go-to quarantine snack is peanut butter on a spoon and a cup of peppermint tea. I was baking a ton at the beginning of COVID but realized quickly that wasn’t gonna be the best hobby for my waistline. There have been hundreds of blessings in this rather difficult year. The time home with my husband and two boys (four and two years old) has been beautiful. We started a garden at the top of lockdown, and it kept us busy. Lots of walks kept us sane. I kept writing and have written dozens and dozens of new songs. Also, the Old Dominion collaboration on “I Can’t” came out of this crazy year, too, which will now be my first single at Country radio! Can’t complain about that. Thanks, 2020!

Of the stations listed, 63 saw share increases, 19 decreased and 5 were flat month-to-month. Compared to the previous year, January 2021 shares were down 8.7 points (-2.5%).
