CRS Carries On

An appropriate conclusion to CRS 2020, Capitol’s Carrie Underwood sat in with SummitMedia SVPP Beverlee Brannigan and CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis for Finding Your Path, the final artist keynote. Fitting for an event with the highest participation of top artists in recent memory. As for the Underwood interview, she focused on three key journeys within her life: music artistry, a path to leadership and her personal path. Beginning with her rise in music, Underwood Carrie discussed her emergence in the public Underwood sphere beginning with her season three American Idol win. “I thought I would go there, the door would shut, and I could move on with my life,” Underwood said of her expectations for Idol. Looking back fondly now, she said the experience helped her to grow as an artist and has brought her down the path she still walks. Moving through her career, Underwood discussed early influences including Linda Ronstadt and her love of classic rock – “I’m a big rock girl; I like metal” – as well as her increased presence as a songwriter on her own albums and her first foray into producing. Growing her own brand has led her to a leadership position within the industry, where she serves as a role model and mentor to younger female artists. “Whatever I do, I want to do it one thousand percent and be the best at it,” she said. “I don’t know what the answer is [to the lower percentage of female airplay on Country radio] – I wish I did – but it’s such a cycle. Something incredible has come out of the conversation, and that is that we as women have realized that we have to support one another.” At home, Underwood strives for a work-life balance and leans heavily on nutrition and fitness as a source of health and stress management. “I like muscles,” she said. “It is an outward, physical expression of ‘I want that, and I’m going to work hard for it.’” Underwood continues to work hard, in the writing room, in the studio, on stage, at home and with her continuing line of Calia by Carrie Underwood athletic wear and forthcoming book, Find Your Path: Honor Your Body, Fuel Your Soul And Get Strong With The Fit52 Life. –Monta Vaden

The New Faces of Country Music Show opened with a trademark roasting from SiriusXM’s Charlie Monk Friday (2/21). “Some of you might not know, but I’m an award-winning music publisher,” the Mayor of Music Row baited. “I found out today that one of my songs has been added to every Country station in America. Yep, Rod Phillips and Charlie Cook both like it.” Kicking off the performances was BMLGR’s Riley Green, who opened with his first No. 1, “There Was This Girl,” and followed with “If It Wasn’t For Trucks.” “I was really wanting to do something nobody else had done before,” he laughed. “So, I wrote a song about a truck.” The title track to his debut album, Different ‘Round Here, led into current single “I Wish Grandpas Never Died.” He told the audience the Riley Green song’s backstory, which began with

MY TUNES: Missi Gallimore Publishing vet Missi Gallimore discusses her most influential music: 1. Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind”: I heard this song from Lori McKenna through Travis Gordon at UMPG on an iPhone work tape. It was one of those songs that immediately moved me from first listen, then Tim and Byron Gallimore took it to a whole different level in the studio. 2. The A Star is Born soundtrack with Barbra Missi Gallimore Streisand and Kris Kristofferson: I listened to this soundtrack over and over in my bedroom pretending I was Barbra. I saw the movie no joke eight times. 3. My first job interview and entrance to the music business: It was an interview with Billy Sherrill (George Jones, Tammy Wynette). He played me a cut he had just finished on Charley Rich and asked what I thought about it. I told him I didn’t like it, and he hired me on the spot. 4. Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die: Every song on that album was intriguing to me. Her voice and the music instrumentation were mesmerizing. I introduced my daughters to her music. I couldn’t sleep one night and was out of town at a friend’s house way out in the country, so I went outside and sat on the porch swing. I remember it was very foggy … but I just sat there and listened through the album several times. I was so drawn to it. 5. Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours: All-time favorite band and album. I would have loved to have been older in the ‘70s. The music from then is undeniable and still holds up. • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Bob Dylan. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Beyonce’s Lemonade. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Chance the Rapper’s “Blessings.”

Top to bottom.” Andress sang “Both” followed by “The Stranger” and “Lady Like,” a song penned following a move from Colorado to the south. “I wrote this song to remind all of us, and myself, that you can be whoever you want and you don’t have to apologize or fit into a box.” The set ended with debut single, “More Hearts Than Mine.” Warner/WEA’s Morgan Evans traded in the looping pedal for an “American band” on songs “Young Again,” “Kiss Somebody” and “Diamonds.” Evans dedicated “Things That We Drink To” to the person who discovered him in Australia and introduced him to CRS and New Faces, his Morgan late manager Rob Potts (CAT Evans 10/27/17). “He told me about the significance of this show. We didn’t have tickets or anything — we just stood by the door and listened in. I’ve understood the significance of tonight since then, and even more so now. I’m so grateful to be here … Rob would be pretty happy tonight, looking down on all this.” The mystery of what happened to June was finally solved during Wheelhouse trio Runaway June’s opening mockumentary. (Spoiler alert: she ran away) The four-song set showcased “Trouble With This Town” and “Head Over Heels” before the Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley and Nicolle Galyon-penned “We Were Rich.” “This song is a reminder for each one of us girls of what it was like growing up, before Runaway June any of us knew we went without anything,” said Naomi Cooke. The crowd got out of their seats and danced for “Buy My Own Drinks,” the first song from a female group to break into the top five since the Dixie Chicks in 2003. “We’ve been to CRS for so many years, begging people to

Inspired by the traits passed down from his late father, including his “feet at 10 and two” walk, Tenpenny dedicated “Walk Like Him” to “anybody out there who’s lost somebody.” Adding, “You’re not alone.” Tenpenny thanked the crowd before playing the final song of the night, “Drunk Mitchell Me.” “I sat out here a lot of times, Tenpenny four years actually, at these tables and dreamed of being up here. Y’all put me here. Thank you so much.”

Congratulations to Sam Hunt, Royce Risser, Katie Dean, David Friedman, Chris Schuler and the MCA promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Kinfolks.” The song is the third single from Hunt’s forthcoming second studio album, Southside, and is Hunt’s sixth career No. 1 and first trip to the top since 2017’s “Body Like A Back Road.” Songwriters Sam Hunt are Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers, Josh Osborne and Hunt. Key takeaways: • Consumers trust and want to support brands that support causes • Employee satisfaction improves with participation in charity work • The charity/non-profits benefit iHeart/Kentucky/Indiana Region Pres. Earl Jones explained a community partner program he developed that has win-winwin (community, non-profit, station) benefits. The concept is for the station to form a local advisory board that selects several non-profits to receive an in-kind threemonth media campaign. Non-profits write a grant request and the board selects Tom Hanrahan, Dale Carter and Earl Jones the charity. “It is good for business, as many business leaders are on non-profit boards, it’s good for the brand of the station and great for awareness and fundraising for the non-profit.” says Jones. KFKF/Kansas City PD Dale Carter advised air talent to bring more to the table than a good voice, asserting that community work is important in developing a brand. “Find that special quality that makes you indispensable; goodwill is one of those qualities,” he said. He urged personalities to find something they are passionate about and become famous for supporting it. “Getting involved is good for you and your brand, it’s good for the charity and its good for your station,” he said. –Sue Wilson

CRS: The Pod Couple

Friday afternoon’s “In Pod We Trust” session examined the audio format’s ability to complement radio as an extension of a brand or personality. Moderator Tom Baldrica asked three podcast experts for reasons behind the form’s popularity. Anchor (Spotify) Head/Content Partnerships Armand Wilson said podcasting is a “raw and authentic way to communicate what you are passionate about.” Speaking of raw, barriers to entry remain staggeringly low. “It doesn’t need to be that polished,” Wilson said. “You can get a $100 mic and a laptop or even record on your phone.” All Our Favorite People pocaster Ashley Eicher addressed questions to answer before creating a show. “You should ask yourself why are you doing it,” she said. “What is your niche? What is your unique voice?” She added that podcasts generally evolve from where they started, but having direction is important. Audio Up cofounder and Make It Up As You Go host Jared Gutstadt offered ways country can extend its storytelling to podcasts. “Artists and can tell their stories and not just play music,” he said. “They can launch an album and tell stories behind the songs.” Where podcasts can most benefit personalities, and hence, stations, is in deepening the connection beyond the standard 10-12 second air break. “You want to have a presence in all places and platforms [and podcasts allow engagement] with your listeners beyond the music for longer periods of time,” Gutstadt said. Marketing and monetizing continue to be the biggest challenges, however. Eicher uses social media heavily and asks guest to promote on their social media. Gutstadt said that air personalities have the benefit of promoting their podcast on their radio shows. Wilson suggested Patreon, live

events and podcast advertising. “Endorsement ads work best, because recommendations from the creators are the most authentic,” he said. –Sue Wilson

CRS: The Futuri Is Bright

On the final day of CRS 2020, Futuri CEO Daniel Anstandig and University of Florida Dir./Programming & Brand Mgr. Rob Harder presented “Defending Your Audience Share: Exclusive Research Findings.” The data were the result of a case study conducted by Futuri and the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications aimed at three questions facing Country radio: How do we defend our Country audience and revenue share, how should we extend our country content to grown onto new platforms and how will we transcend our challenges as the country competition landscape changes? Key findings included: • 76% of AM/FM Country listeners would prefer more video content from their favorite Country radio stations. • Country radio listeners are tuning in to nearly the same amount of AM/FM radio in the past, but 23% plan to listen to more Country radio streaming in the next three months. • Women 18-34 who listen to broadcast radio tend to be more active on social media than streaming listeners.
