Power Gold Holds
After a near-record breaking Country Aircheck Power Gold Top 100 last August (CAW 9/7/21) – of which nearly a quarter were new entries – the first list for 2022 swings in the opposite direction with only three new entries and relatively stable rankings across the board. Of the 24 new entries on the previous edition, all but three remain, indicating a high degree of staying power. Morgan Wallen’s “Whiskey Glasses” debuted in the top spot in the last survey and remains firmly in place. Seven other titles deMorgan Wallen buted within the top 20 last August, and six of them repeat with top 20 finishes. Of the three debuts on this list, Dan + Shay account for two: “All To Myself” at No. 55 and “Speechless” at No. 90. The only other debut belongs to Justin Moore’s “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” which enters at No. 83. OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Amazon Music Breakthrough Artist Breland: Some of my biggest highlights from 2021 were playing the CMT Awards with Mickey Guyton and Gladys Knight, going on my first ever solo tour, joining the Dierks Bentley Beers On Me Tour and being the YouTube Artist on the Rise. I have never heard just myself on the radio, but when I was on tour in Dallas, I heard “Beers On Me” playing at BRELAND a steakhouse. I was so excited … I told the hostess, the server and the people at all the tables around me. My album title is yet-to-be-announced, but I can tell you I’m fusing all of my favorite musical genres into a sub-genre of country music that aims to create a bridge between cultures. Every song showcases a different side of my voice and personality while introducing a unique sound that can only be described as “cross country.” If I could have written one song, I would say “23” by Sam Hunt. It’s such a well-written concept and easy-going melody. Every time I hear it, it sounds like something I should have thought of. My favorite song on the radio right now has got to be “Beers On Me.” Not just because I’m on it, but because it’s a really cool musical moment. We’ve got Dierks, who has had 20+ No. 1s at Country radio and is still killing it. Then there’s Hardy, who has been crushing it both as a writer for others and as a prominent young artist in the genre. My verse brings a completely different flavor. I can’t think of another song that weaves that many styles into one record. I’m currently bingeing See and Ted Lasso on Apple TV. They’re both incredibly well-produced shows, but See is so heavy and thrilling that I usually end my night watching Ted Lasso to lighten things up. What you can expect from me in 2022 is growth in my songwriting, some new music as an artist and me moving into other spaces like television and film. I see myself as a multi-hyphenate entertainer, and I’m excited to showcase some other sides of my talent.

like loading a Nerf gun knowing you’ll be shot with all the bullets within minutes.” Just The Way They Planned: Five years later, the BMG acquisition of BBR Music Group is revisited. “Everybody makes promises when they are trying to acquire you – all blue sky,” says BMG/Nashville President Jon Loba. “[But] BMG not only delivered on every promise but allowed us even more freedom. We were never asked to lay off huge numbers of employees in cost cutting. In fact, they continued to give us more resources. We were given the freedom to stick with artists that – on the balance sheet – made no sense.” Emblematic of the new approach are Parmalee, who will perform their latest No. 1 “Just The Way” with Blanco Brown and Brooke Eden on the March 7 ACM Awards. “Just a crazy way to rebuild a career,” says their producer and manager David Fanning. “It was eight years after their [first] No. 1. That never happens.” That story – and the central role of one radio programmer – are touched on, as well. The Consultant Is In: In The Interview, Albright & O’Malley & Brenner Consulting Partner and longtime CRB board member Becky Brenner addresses challenges facing the event. “Radio has always adapted, so we’re poised to do well,” she says. “CRB has been smart to embrace the DSPs and educating not just radio people but the industry on everything that’s happening where consumers are concerned. Radio has the opportunity to do so many things from a digital perspective but also have a marketing arm while being integrated with local communities. It’s a matter of figuring out how to make the revenue side of that work. Many companies already are doing that.” Regarding record-low PPM ratings, Brenner points to “a perfect storm of the pandemic, the format being slightly onedimensionally pop sounding for several years and the need to develop a few more superstars. We need more artists who are easily identified and recognized and can fill stadiums. Luke Combs was able to do that almost out-of-the-box by quickly developing a hit catalog. That’s a bit of an anomaly, but we need a few more of those. Added to the storm is women’s listening habits changed dramatically based on childcare, not working in offices and not commuting as much. It will come back around, and we’re seeing some signs, but radio also has to make itself more relevant to people under 35.”

“Crazy Town” makes its way back on for the first time since 2015, marking the longest time a song has ever spent off the list between appearances. Luke Combs and Florida Georgia Line tie for second place, each placing six songs – also a repeat from last August. The Winter 2022 PG100 is composed of 35 male artists with 72 songs, five groups with 11 songs and three women with six songs. Carrie Underwood is the only female to place multiple titles on the list and is also the highest-ranking female at No. 22 with “Blown Away.” It should be noted that many of the biggest female hits of the past couple of years (e.g. Gabby Barrett’s “The Good Ones” and Maren Morris’ “The Bones”) are still classified as recurrents and are not yet eligible for the Power Gold list. Country Aircheck once again broke out the PG100 along ownership lines to analyze how different titles fare among different groups (see chart page 21). Last August, “Whiskey Glasses” was the only title to finish in the top four among each of the three largest station owners. This edition finds the title first among Audacy stations and second among iHeart stations, but it falls from fourth to 32nd among Cumulus stations. The only song to land in all three groups’ top 10 this edition is Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road.” Of the overall top 10, eight titles are also top 10 among iHeart stations, only three are on Audacy’s top 10 and just one title (Hunt) is among Cumulus’ top 10. Seven songs have appeared on each of the 17 PG100s since it became a regular feature in 2009: Dierks Bentley’s “What Was I Thinkin’,” Kenny Chesney’s “I Go Back,” Billy Currington’s “Good Directions,” Rascal Flatts’ “Life Is A Highway,” Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You” and Tim McGraw’s “Something Like That.” The latter also holds the distinction as the only release from the ‘90s to appear on this list. Honorable mentions go to Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried” – which has placed in all 15 lists since becoming eligible and has yet to finish lower than No. 16 – and “Wagon Wheel” by Darius Rucker, which has finished in the top four in all 10 lists since it became eligible.
