Welcome To The Clubhouse
The newest social media platform at the center of conversation – literally – is Clubhouse, an invite- and audio-only app still in beta testing but growing exponentially each day. Founded in 2020 in Silicon Valley, and still only available to iPhone users, Clubhouse has grown from approximately 3,500 members in December to more than six million currently. Early adopters have included those in the tech industry, celebrities – including Oprah and Ashton Kutcher – and music industry professionals. Country Aircheck spoke to a few heavy users for their take on the platform’s relevance to country music and Country radio. Big Loud/Maverick artist manager Marc Rucker shares a not atypical discovery story. “I found out about Clubhouse through Marc Rucker an artist who had been on,” he says. “He told me he spent three hours the night before talking music with DeadMau5 and other industry professionals, so it immediately piqued my interest.” Since his initial log-on, Rucker finds himself spending time on the app daily, whether tuning in as a listener while commuting or devoting three- to four-hour chunks of time engaged in networking and professional development conversations. “The platform currently has a lot of independent creatives looking for advice, networking and sharing projects ... and I’m excited for it to open to more people who will bring in more topics, ideas and ways to use the platform,” he says. Many Nashville-based creatives have utilized the platform for socializing, even scheduling sessions named for the popular local watering hole The Red Door Saloon. Safe In Sound: The appeal of the app, for many, is threefold. Clubhouse is audio-only, connecting people without the need for decorative backgrounds or combed hair required by now-daily video conferences. The conversation-based nature and requirements to list your legal name in your profile also serve to deescalate many situations that could lead to more aggressive name-calling and “keyboard warrior” posturing via text-based platforms like Facebook and Twitter. CRS Liners: Back To The Future?
As CRS 2021: The Virtual Experience kicked off today (2/16), attendees have had the opportunity to explore the platform’s added benefits, which include viewing or re-watching sessions in an on-demand setting. And beyond the expected educational panels, workshops, networking opportunities and musical performances, CRS is offering yet another added benefit for this year’s attendees – audio and video content from multiple artists for use on-air and online. For those familiar with the artist liners of RJ Curtis yesteryear, well, this isn’t that. In fact, CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis says it’s better. “We’ve worked with most of the major labels in town to bring together dozens of audio liners from their full rosters of artists and compiled those in one place for radio to access,” Curtis says.

Without the ability to bring artists and radio together in person, liners are no longer customized for each station. On the plus side, a one-time read-through allowed more artists to participate. “We phased out the custom liners, because it got harder and harder to get artists to participate, and it became logistically more difficult to produce over the years,” says Curtis. “This isn’t a handful of artists reading custom liners anymore, so the volume of content we’ll give people access to is massive.” Participating label groups offering liners from their roster include UMG, Sony, Warner, BMG/ BBRMG and Curb. Additionally, Curtis is excited about the addition of video content. “We have approximately 15 artist interviews that each run approximately 15 minutes in length,” he says. Those interviews were conducted by Production Content Inc. owner Joe Wills, who will provide his scripted questions for each artist, as well. The package includes audio and video of the interviews, which can be customized by stations and personalities for use on-air, online and on social media. “You’ll get interviews with Darius [Rucker], Cole [Swindell], Priscilla Block, Chris Young, Jameson [Rodgers], Dustin Lynch ... it’s a great collection of artists from different labels,” Curtis says. The audio will be posted the week of CRS, and all videos should be fully produced and available for download the week after CRS concludes. The audio and video packages come with full, multiple platform usage permissions from the participating labels and artists. Approved artist images are also included, making it easy to build and promote a complete content piece. These packages will be made available to all CRS registrants, free of charge. Chart Chat
Congratulations to Kelsea Ballerini, Mike Wilson, Bill Macky and the Black River team on landing this week’s No. 1. “Hole In The Bottle” is Ballerini’s sixth charttopper and first since “Miss Me More” did the trick on 6/10/19. It also ends a 28-week solo female drought atop the chart. Songwriters are Jesse Frasure, Hillary Lindsey, Ashley Kelsea Ballerini Gorley, Steph Jones and Ballerini. And kudos to Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR crew on notching 29 more adds for Dan + Shay’s “Glad You Exist.” This is only the third time in the past year that a song has led the add board for two consecutive weeks.

WI TH A look at how Broken Bow’s Lainey Wilson is spending her Quaran-Time: I’ve learned how to channel my creativity in a lot of different ways during this quarantine. For example, I painted my bathroom wall a bunch of bright colors … it still scares me a lil’ every time I turn the light on. I’ve gotten into TikTok — it’s been a great way for me to share my music, fashion aesthetic and how funny I think I am. It’s going to take a hell of a lot more than 2020 to knock me down. My quarantine routine consists of drinking a pot of coffee, hitting the gym, writing a song, TikToking and cooking supper. I love being on the move, and this past year forced me to (somewhat) slow down. But, I’ve written more than 200 songs and spent a lot of time being crazy on social media, so I’ve tried to focus on what I can do instead of thinking too much about what I can’t control. I’ve grown leaps and bounds, and it makes me that much more determined to get back on the road and get after it as soon as I’m able. Thank God for social media. Since we aren’t playing shows and shaking hands, I am still trying to stay in as much communication with my people as possible. I miss them and cannot wait to see them!
I’ve had to get creative to promote my music. To kick off my monthly song releases in the spring of 2020, I created four characters (I played all of them) and a script for the announce video (watch here). On the “WWDD” release day, I digitally signed photos for fans who posted about the song since that was the closest I could get to an actual autograph. I’ve had co-writers and fans participate in the #ThingsAManOughtaKnowChallenge. We’ve done a variety of fun things on top of connecting with folks over Zoom. I’m constantly trying to come up with ways to keep things fun, fresh, engaging and as personal as possible. I’m bingeing The Queens Gambit and Bridgerton. Isn’t everyone? They roped me in pretty quick. My go-to quarantine snack is a turkey sausage egg scramble with a whole lot of shredded cheese. Well, that’s what it is this week anyway. I’ve also been doing this thing I saw Caitlin Parker post about where you sauté bananas in coconut oil and top it with almond butter and chocolate syrup. Yummy and guilt free. Y’all are making me hungry. I have witnessed many silver linings in this current situation. One of my favorites was being able to spend more time with my crazy

(continued from page 1) Additionally, Clubhouse platform rules and terms of service strictly prohibit recording conversations, transcription, transmission or publication of statements made within rooms. Thus, Clubhouse is seen as a safer space for sharing thoughts, concerns and opinions. That has proven especially appealing for those in the industry looking to discuss hot-button issues, music opinions, programming

practices or career advancement tactics away from the more open forums of traditional social media. “Networking, brand development, marketing ideas and staying on top of new and emerging trends that you can’t find anywhere else” are the platform’s top attractions for Alpha KIAI/Mason City, IA PD/morning host Britt Pearson. She has found herself both listening-in and speaking during sessions on topics ranging from the Texas country music scene or social media hacks and best practices to podcasting and generating audience engagement. “I get notifications when people I follow go Britt Pearson into rooms, and it has been educational to follow people into rooms that may not have originally caught my attention,” she says. “I have a thirst for knowledge, and for anyone who is interested in continuing to learn the craft, this is perfect.” Like many others using Clubhouse, Pearson does a lot of listening, but is mindful that, “I can raise my hand and become an active participant at any time.” Spilling The Possibili-Tea: Beyond Andrew Cohen professional development, networking and pure entertainment, Clubhouse has practical applications. “We recently had 40-plus people in a room discussing various topics pertinent to artists,” says Cohencidence Projects owner/ consultant Andrew Cohen. “Participants included managers, photographers, publicists, digital marketing experts, radio executives and singer/songwriters collaborating and brainstorming new content creation ideas, and discussing ways to execute fan engagement promotions with artists.” Audio-based meet-and-
Page 13
greets, private listening sessions, and modern takes on old fashioned fan clubs for artists, brands, stations and personalities are being discussed as possibilities. And for radio stations? “Imagine if you want to test new music with PDs and MDs, so you post a notice and bring in those people whose opinions you want,” says McVay Media Pres./consultant Mike McVay. “A great way to trial new products or preview new concepts, Clubhouse could become a miniCRS for exposure and education, as well as a way to market new music and introduce new artists.” Personalities and programmers have already been experimenting with hosting live Mike McVay podcasts and mix shows, as well as utilizing the app’s privacy settings to host more intimate rooms for airchecking sessions or voiceover training. CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis and Country Aircheck’s Monta Vaden will co-host nightly Clubhouse rooms during CRS to recap the day’s sessions while offering after-hours networking. “It’s also a direct line to station talent,” McVay points out. “It’s the old-fashioned request line on steroids, and it’s like being at a station appearance or a remote broadcast. The audience can have access to you and you to them.” McVay also sees the ability to host post-show interviews with touring artists, stage virtual Fan Fests and further engage and strengthen the bond between Country radio, artists and fans. Outside the industry, college classes, live news, trivia tournaments and celebrity interviews are possible applications of the platform. Says Rucker, “The potential is great for any and all types of personalities and story tellers, but radio is uniquely equipped to take advantage of their knowledge of talking to and understanding an audience and creating captive programming to keep listeners coming back.”

Money On My Mind: While interest in Clubhouse is exploding, the monetization question has not yet been answered. Cohen points to an upcoming tipping feature for performers. Additionally, Midwest/ Nashville Dir./Social Media Juliana Wright, whose background includes digital sales and marketing for multi-format Juliana Wright clusters, foresees multiple revenue sources. “Once this opens to the public across all operating systems, there will be many opportunities to monetize the platform,” she says. “Content and connection will be the base of that, and from there, marketing can be packaged around brand loyalty or woven into experiential marketing efforts, sponsorships and other non-traditional revenue streams.” Wright notes that younger demos are utilizing the platform for networking and professional development, as opposed to the entertainment found on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Follow The Leaders: Will Clubhouse – something akin to an audio-only version of the original AOL Chat Rooms – stick around? It may be too soon to tell. “Many of us were excited about Tumblr when it started,” recalls McVay. “Jimmy Fallon tried to connect Tumblr to his show! And, many of us were ecstatic about Periscope, which is Moderate Views: Radio talent now set to go dark March and industry leaders gather to 31. But if Clubhouse discuss Clubhouse’s practical is welcoming, easy to applications for radio. navigate and provides its users with a remarkable experience, it will succeed.” Clubhouse members can follow Rucker @marcrucker, Pearson @ gottabcountry, Cohen @andrewmcohen, McVay @mikemcvay and Wright @julianawright.
