Country’s Forgettable Month Year

Country programmers are accustomed to the bumps the format takes during each year’s Holiday book, but a not-sofunny-thing happened on Country Aircheck’s way to analyzing that 2021 monthly. What looked like a record low for the Holiday book turned out to be an entire year at the bottom. That’s right, 2021 saw Country radio’s lowest PPM share since the methodology launched in 2007. Many factors played into what one programmer calls a “perfect storm,” but the numbers tell much of the tale. First, the Holiday book and Santa’s extra coal for Country. Shares among PPM subscribing stations totaled 281.2 for Persons 6+, nearly 10 shares lower than the previous low of 290.7 recorded in the Holiday 2020 survey (see graphs, starting on page 5). The month also marked a record low share for 15 of 87 subscribing PPM stations, while 17 stations set new low cume marks. The average cume for PPM Country stations in the Holiday book was 238,207 – a 6% decrease from last Holiday’s 253,352. This was the format’s second lowest average cume month ever; only April 2020’s pandemic lockdown 226,274 was lower. More concerning, obviously, is the full year. As Nielsen VP/Audience Insights Jon Miller flatly confirms, “2021 is the worst year for Country we’ve ever seen in PPM.” Jon Miller Among Persons 6+, Country averaged a 6.1 share nationally for the year, down from a 6.6 in 2020 and a peak of 8.2 in 2014. The story is similar among demos: in P18-34, Country tied its record low 7.3 share, down from a 7.9 in 2020 and a peak of 9.8 in 2014; in P25-54, 2021 saw a 6.2 share, down from 2020’s 6.7 and 2014’s peak 8.0 share. Miller says Pop (5.3), Rhythmic (1.9) and Alternative (2.5) also suffered their lowest shares to date, while Urban AC (5.1) and Spanish Contemporary (2.9) matched their best shares ever. News-Talk held steady to lead all other formats with an 11.2 share. (continued on page 3)

The Radio Music License Committee (RMLC) and Global Music Rights, LLC (GMR) have settled their long-running lawsuits. On April 1, stations without a license from GMR will no longer be permitted to perform songs within the GMR repertory. The story for 2021 in cume is similar. The loss of WNSH/New York, which had one of the format’s largest cumes, did not help. But even removing it from the equation, the average cume among all subscribing stations in PPM markets fell 6% from 2020 to 274,306. The 2020 cume number, in turn, was down 21% from 2019. OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Spotify Hot Country 2022 Artist to Watch Dalton Dover: During the pandemic, I learned how to grind. Because we weren’t playing shows, I had to figure out how to make money, so I would get on Facebook Live and perform with a virtual tip bucket. I learned how to hustle and figured out how to continue making a living even though the world was shut down. I had to find and create ways to be in front of my fans no DALTON DOVER matter what, every day, and that was never really a problem for me once I found my footing on social media. Balancing being a father with my career is … not easy. But, I talk to them and let my babies know what I do and why I’m doing it. I tell them about it in hopes that in a few years, they can have a better childhood than I had. I want them to understand that when I’m out on the road playing shows, I’m still there for them, and ultimately, I’m doing it for them. I grew up listening to WUBL/Atlanta, WSRM/Rome, GA and Moby in the Morning. I’ve been doing a lot of writing, and we’re getting ready to have a lot of new music this year. I’m really looking forward to sharing those songs! My latest release, “Baby I Am,” is a song I wanted to record for my wife, Faith. When I shared it on TikTok, a lot of fans were telling me that they are planning to use it for their wedding song. I can’t think of a more flattering compliment than that. For my music to be a part of their lives is incredible. I wish I’d written Chris Young’s “Tomorrow.” That song and the story behind it is just phenomenal. I guess it has a lot to do with his amazing voice, too. But that’s a song I wish I would have written just because of the story it tells. My favorite song on the radio – any format – right now is Luke Combs’ “Doing This.” I’m currently bingeing The Walking Dead. On TikTok, I really love Lainey Wilson. Her account is really cool. I stay on Ernest’s TikTok, because I love keeping up with him and seeing what he’s got going on. Thomas Mac and Cooper Allen, I love those guys, and I love what they do. I also love Stalekracker – he’s a chef from Louisiana and one of my favorites! In 2022, Country radio can expect new music and a lot more live shows. Get ready to see a lot more of me this year!

a soft music cycle. But that’s far from a full explanation. “While I think it’s a music issue, COVID stopped us from doing a lot of things that work on the community level,” says one major market programmer. “This is a very street, touchy-feely format. Lack of touring hurt. I do think we’re getting back to a lot of that.” A large market PD agrees: “This is a format that needs to be out in the community and in front of its fans. That’s always what’s driven Country; we see that in summer numbers regularly rising as a result of touring. Country also appeals to the working population of America, whose habits have changed dramatically.” Strong ratings for “comfort food” formats and declines for others with similar-to-Country emphasis on community and touring tend to support those arguments. Meanwhile, concerns about the music are widespread. “The format is producing good music at an unprecedented rate, but there’s a real lack of great and special music that is sustainable,” a major market PD says. “Couple that with an increasing amount of automation and lack of focus on real community initiatives, and you have number of stations relying solely on the music position – which just isn’t as strong. Good is the enemy of great.” One prominent MD is even more blunt. “Men are evacuating the format. Country listening by men 25-54 fell by more than 20% [in one market], even though total male listening in the demo was flat. The format has lost its grit. Sure, the target is women, but we must maintain a healthy share of male listening to really compete in total adult listening. As much as Nashville turned its back on the ‘Bro Country’ era, those five or six years of music still deliver the best test scores of the past 20 years. Why? Because men liked 10 songs about trucks and beer. When I see the Country format lose a New York City signal and no one jumps in to replace it, or when it struggles to compete in the top 10 markets, I think we’re seeing real signs of a format that has lost its way.”

“A lot of [the music] doesn’t sound like country,” says the large market PD. “That’s why when a song like ‘Flower Shops’ comes out, it cuts against the grain of that Air Supply sound. In terms of lyrics, look at ‘Buy Dirt.’ Could anything be more country than that?” Chart Of The Matter: Chart mechanics, a familiar complaint, may exacerbate the issue. “We’re in a pattern where we’re marching to No. 1,” says one PD. “Every single from every label is assumed by every manager and artist that it will go all the way. Labels won’t give up on a song until it’s absolutely futile. It clogs things up so that really good records aren’t getting played a lot, while a lot of mediocre records that never test hang around. We end up with 48 No. 1s in a year, but how many sustain airplay beyond that parade? Not many at all.” Not only are songs being held onto too long, some aren’t being held onto long enough in the view of the MD. “Just because Nashville is done with a single, that doesn’t mean a thing to our audience. Great songs have a long shelf life of their own; they don’t conform to marketing plans. Chances are, the audience is just getting to know it.” Last year’s public relations crisis surrounding Morgan Wallen may have also impacted Country radio. “Whatever you think of Morgan Wallen, that didn’t help,” adds a top PD. “He was poised to be the artist who attracts people from outside the format. Every peak we’ve had, someone has been in that role: Randy Travis, Garth, Shania, Taylor. Instead, we had a bad perception moment when we didn’t need one.” Programmers whose companies have stations outside of PPM 8.0
