US99 Turns 40

On Feb. 6, 1982, First Media’s struggling Chicago AC WEFM flipped to Country as “US99.” The station launched with Don Williams’ “Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good” and soon after adopted the call letters WUSN. At the time, there were already three other Country stations in Chicago: WMAQ-AM led the format with a 4.2 share, and the combo of WJJD-AM and WJEZ pulled an additional 4.1 shares. Within two years, both WJJD-AM and WJEZ had exited the format, but it took more than three years for WUSN to overtake WMAQ Drew Horowitz which, like many AMs at the time, gradually added more talk blocks until playing its last country record in Nov. 1986. Now at the 40year mark, WUSN has become synonymous with country music in Chicago and has been home to some of the industry’s most recognizable names. Country Aircheck caught up with many and asked to share some of their favorite memories. • Drew Horowitz, GM, 1983-88: Lee JD Spangler Logan was brought in from First Media/Houston as the first PD. Our goal was to establish US99 as a viable Country station with the listeners and Nashville. The first two years was building the brand and differentiating ourselves from the competition, then WMAQ-AM decided to move to an all-news format. In the end, we were the last man standing and became a top Chicago station in ratings and revenue. Alan Sledge • J.D. Spangler, PD, 1988-93; Mornings, 1989-97: We had some luck, and we had a little skill, too. That was the heyday of country music. A lot of my career coincided with the explosion of Garth Brooks. He would hang out backstage with us and was even on our logo. Being able to be a small part of his explosion sticks out tremendously. (continued on page 1)

Musgraves Tour: Cold Open

On a subzero night in St. Paul, MN, Kacey Musgraves opened her inaugural arena tour at the Xcel Energy Center to a crowd of more than 9,000. KEEY/Minneapolis evening host and self-proclaimed “Kacey super fan” Rachel Ramsey offers a preview of what to expect from Star-Crossed: Unveiled: “Being Kacey’s first arena tour, she certainly did not disappoint,” says Ramsey, who describes the setup as “bigger and more dramatic” than previous tours while maintaining the early authenticity that drew her to Kacey Musgraves. Opening with the title track Musgraves from her latest album Star-Crossed, the curtains parted to reveal a red-cast Musgraves sporting a “long, high ponytail, loafers and a trendy black pantsuit with full and broken sparkling hearts alternating on her sleeves and pant legs.”

Keeping with the theme, the song closed with a heart sculpture erupting into flames. “It was dramatic and fantastic,” adds Ramsey. Despite the subject matter of Musgraves’ post-divorce fifth studio album, Ramsey describes the production as “beautiful and bright.” She recalls, “At one point, Kacey said, ‘I just want us all to have fun, even Rachel Ramsey though I made a pretty depressing album.’” The brightness can be attributed to bold lighting and LED wristbands given to attendees upon arrival. “The wristbands were synchronized and lit up during some of the show’s biggest moments,” explains Ramsey, who also points to a disco ball that set the crowd aglow as Musgraves performed songs from Golden Hour, including “Space Cowboy” and “High Horse,” as a visual highlight. Outside of a few tracks from Golden Hour and “Merry Go Round” — during which she thanked OG fans — Musgraves focused on the new album. Ramsey details one of “the most emotional moments of the night” as the solo performance of “Hookup Scene” played simply “with just an acoustic guitar under plain lights.” Towards the end of her set, Musgraves shared her excitement over a karaoke microphone purchased from Amazon and invited the crowd to choose between four songs —”No Scrubs” (the winner), “Killing Me Softly,” “Dreams” and “Blinding Lights” — for “Kacey-oke.” Kacey Musgraves Roses fell over Musgraves as she sang “Gracias a la Vida” at the end of the night before returning for an encore of “Slow Burn” and “Rainbow.” “Her vocals were incredible as always, and the production and scale were well done,” summarizes Ramsey. “She made everyone in the audience feel like they want to be her new best friend.” Reach Ramsey here. –Caitlin DeForest

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Hubbard WIL/St. Louis morning co-host/producer Brad “Meat” Barnes: I grew up in Kansas City, and [Steel City] KFKF was and still is my mom’s favorite station, so that’s what I heard in the car. Even now, KFKF just sounds like home. Growing up, the on-air and “talk” portion didn’t pique my interest as much – I was just hooked on the music. I was the kid in the back seat jamming out to “Watermelon Crawl” and “Achy Breaky Heart.” I got into the radio industry after struggling to stay healthy while playing college football at Baker University in Kansas. When I realized it was time to move on from playing, I started helping the radio crew for the football team, which led to me getting involved with my campus station. Once I got a taste of that, I was sold, and I ended up hosting multiple shows throughout the years and eventually managing the station. The man, the myth, the legend [former voice of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas Jayhawks] Tom Hedrick has been my mentor since I was lucky enough to have him as a professor in college. He was someone who found success at the highest level possible in the industry, so I treated his advice as gold. From my appearance to how I acted around industry folks, to the job I should pursue right after school he always had great advice. Upon college graduation, I was considering a part-time position in a larger market versus a full-time position in a small market, and [Hedrick] advised me to go small so I would get a chance to do everything. In my first year, I simultaneously hosted a four-hour morning show, called play-byplay and served as a salesperson. I gained so many valuable life and work experiences, and I wouldn’t change a thing. During the pandemic, I worked for the Sports-Talk station just down the hall from WIL. My job was to create four hours of content on a daily basis when there was literally nothing happening in sports. I learned how to be creative and have fun with radio while creating quality content that is based on the show’s talent and their personalities. We also moved into a new home during the pandemic, and there have been non-stop projects. I dabbled a bit with various tools previously, but I was inexperienced and dove into YouTube to learn things to help me tackle projects and home upgrades. I think I’ll keep my DIY mentality, even after the pandemic. My favorite song on the radio right now in any format is “Buy Dirt” by Jordan Davis and Luke Bryan. I’ve always been a sap for the slow songs, and they nailed this one. It’s got such a calming feel with the delivery and tone, and it’s as if all the answers to life were laid before him so clearly. Social media is my personal “improvement area;” sometimes I feel

like a 60-year-old trapped in a 31-year-old body, but it is what it is. I’m on Twitter and am currently learning the Instagram life. I have a Facebook profile as well, but that tends to be more personal. I am hoping to grow in this area with my move to WIL. My top five most influential artists, songs, albums or concerts are: 1. Brooks & Dunn. This was a bucket list concert for me, and I finally got to cross it off this fall in St. Louis. They are such a major part of my upbringing and my love for country music. I probably embarrassed my girlfriend with my MEET MEAT fanboy dancing and singing to every song. 2. Luke Combs. I remember catching Luke somewhat early in his come-up via YouTube. Something about his voice was so strong and genuine, and soon after I arrived in St. Louis, I got a chance to see him open for Jason Aldean. Flash forward, and he’s the biggest name in country music. I love that he hunts and has taken up my newfound hobby of woodworking. 3. Keith Urban. I always enjoyed Keith’s music growing up, but after seeing him perform at the Final Four a few years ago, I realized the dude is insane on stage. His energy and guitar work captivated me, and it was one of the most impressive shows I’ve seen from an entertainer standpoint. 4. AC/DC. I heard their music all the time growing up, and it was a major part of my high school football experience, as well. They were also one of my very first concerts when I was in high school, and it was amazing to hear those iconic songs and see them on stage. Plus, they had a train burst through the backdrop and a huge bell drop from the ceiling. How can you not love that?! 5. Justin Moore, Off The Beaten Path. Justin was the headliner for a major county fair when I worked in Oberlin, KS. He was rolling out hits at the time off this album, and it just connected for some reason. I played it front to back consistently, because it had the blue-collar, God-fearing, smalltown vibes that felt like where I lived. I never miss an episode of Below Deck and am patiently awaiting the return of Ozark. I also can’t get enough of Home Town on HGTV – I love the projects they do. Since I picked up woodworking, I find myself scoping out all the tools and equipment in Ben’s workshop. I’ll get there someday. Reach Barnes here.

We had a really good team: Trish Biondo, “Big John” Howell, “Ramblin’ Ray” Stevens and John “The Katman” Katzback [who passed away from a brain aneurysm in 1994 at the age of 29]. I remain close friends with them to this day. It was a magical time, and I was glad to be a part of it. I wish everybody could have a run like that. • Alan Sledge, PD, 1996-99: I recall Dec. 18, 1997, when Garth Brooks was scheduled at the Rosemont Arena hours after comedian Chris Farley died in the same building as the radio station [John Hancock Center]. There was going to be a presentation with Garth at the station to memorialize a milestone with his latest CD at that time, so things were very hectic that afternoon. And yes, the show went on as planned. • Dean McNeil, PD, 1993-97: Winning CMA Station of the Year in 1993 and having the No. 1 morning show in Chicago in 1994 are great memories. When [morning co-host] John Katzback passed away, Billy Ray Cyrus and numerous other country artists did a benefit concert for John’s wife and young son, Max. We sold out the Rosemont in two hours and raised more than $200,000. • Kenny Jay, PD, 2018-20: The incredible staff we had set up so many memorable moments: The St. Jude Radiothons;

LakeShake Festival; the Chicago Bears’ “Double Doink” playoff loss; and numerous Joe’s Bar moments, including Garth. Two unique moments that stand out are my childhood crush Tiffani Thiessen cooking tacos and serving margaritas to our staff. Also, the station was undergoing renovation, so every day at 2pm became “2 O’Clock Yacht” with Kenny Jay a member of each station’s staff choosing a yacht rock song we could all enjoy for a quick break. Marci Braun and (now cluster VP) Greg Solk didn’t disappoint! • Jeff Kapugi, PD, 2011-16: Getting to program in your hometown is something every programmer should get to experience. US99 was my introduction to programming a Country station. While in Chicago, I got the Jeff Kapugi introduction to St. Jude and the Country Cares Radiothon. My last year there, we eclipsed $25 million total raised in the many years we had been participating. Joe’s Bar was certainly a highlight – getting to work with Ed Warm and his amazing team and the Nashville labels to create some spectacular audience experiences that money could not buy. Then there were the ACM Awards in 2015 for Station Of The Year and Trish Biondo Major Market Personalities for Lisa Dent & “Ramblin’ Ray” Stevens. • Trish Biondo, Dir./Research, Dir./Promotions, MD, on-air, 1986-2013: The first thing that comes to mind is family. That is what it felt like working at US99 – from the staff to the listeners

to the clients – and of course the country music industry. There are so many incredible people that have worked at US99 throughout the years that contributed to its long lasting, unparalleled success. The list of artists coming through Chicago could just go on and on, but the big highlight for me is George Strait for two big reasons: I was an extra in his movie Pure Country, and I got to emcee his sold-out show at Soldier Field. I always remember thinking, “It doesn’t get better than this. I’m working at the No. 1 station in my hometown, and I just introduced George Strait onstage while Soldier Field was roaring.” I have to tell you about one very special friendship I developed at US99: Marci Braun’s mom won a station promotion in which the morning show went to their house for a backyard barbeque. Marci told me about her love of country music and radio, and we exchanged letters throughout her college years and early career. I am proud to have recommended her for the Music Director position at US99 – the rest is history! • Marci Braun, APD/MD, 2004-20; Brand Mgr. 2020-present: In 2009, Taylor Swift played at Allstate Arena, and Taylor Lautner was there. Girls began trying to push the bicycle barrier down to get to him. ThenBig Machine regional Mandy McCormack jumped up, all by herself, and pushed back on that barrier. She had superhuman strength that day! One of my favorite moments was when the CMAs were in New York City in 2005. Marci Braun So many of our on-air talent, sales and programming peeps got to go. Being in that city for the show was just electric, and we got to spend that time with our coworkers.

• Justin Case, PD, 1999-2003: On 9/11, we had to evacuate the Hancock Building. Chicago F.D. came through and it was intense. We patched CBS news over the air and left. Big John, Trish Biondo and Ray Stevens did a magnificent job that morning. John Howell was just red in the face about having to leave. Later, he and I gained access to the building, and I sat and watched him take calls for hours. Justin Case People just wanted to talk, and he was brilliant. • Mike Peterson, PD, 2004-08: My absolute best memory is the people. We had the perfect storm of committed, passionate, driven and fun people in all departments. It truly was a special group at the right time with big success. There was just enough drama and dysfunction to keep things interesting, but we always had fun. We worked hard and Mike Peterson played harder. I’ll never forget practically living at Joe’s Bar for live events, or a young Taylor Swift wandering the halls and visiting with everybody with no entourage or being told to, as if she worked there. And under the “bizarre, yet funny” category: Jessica Simpson was by for a station visit with her dog, and it peed on the carpet in my office. Jessica wasn’t quite the pop diva we expected ... she helped clean it up! The list goes on and on and on.
