In Oct. 2021, Audacy WNSH/New York pulled the plug on eight-and-a-half years of Country. The unfortunately familiar position of being without a full-power Country station in the nation’s top media market is only part of the story, however. Here’s a look at the landscape as it stands more than a year later. Concurrent with the flip of WNSH to Classic Hip-Hop as WXBK, the Country format was moved to the signal’s HD-2 channel. During its final full survey (Oct. 2021), WNSH pulled a 2.1 share and had a cume of 863,100 listeners, which was the largest cume for any Country station that month. For Q3 2022, WXBK drew a 1.4 share and cume of 899,100, persons 6+. While no other major signal has stepped up to fill the Country void, Townsquare flipped WOBM-AM/Monmouth and its translator last February. The station joins Press Communications’ WKMK/Monmouth in covering the Jersey Shore area. WJVC/ Nassau covers the eastern side of Long Island. All in, the various signals covering the metro (see map, pg. 7) registered total cume of 240,200 in Q3 2022 – just 30% of what WNSH drew a year prior. However, WKMK’s cume is 22% larger than it was before WNSH’s flip, and it has climbed as high as a 0.9 share in the New York book. And despite being HD only, WXBK-HD2 has shown up in every book since last April, reaching a 0.3 share. (Data for WJVC is not available, as it does not subscribe to Nielsen [see ratings, pg. 5]).
