CRS: Prepare For Different

With Country Radio Seminar preparing to mark its 52nd anniversary in the most unconventional of ways – transitioning to a virtual edition amid concerns surrounding coronavirus – the event moves to a four-day experience. With a mix of traditional favorites and new offerings, the session lineup and entertainment slate are packed, despite the lack of in-person opportunities. CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis and CRS Agenda Committee Chair Brent Michaels tell Country Aircheck there are still myriad reasons to be excited about the event. In addition to migrating online, CRS is RJ Curtis extending its week but beginning each day later in the morning. “We will kick off at 10am CT each day, because we understand we have attendees from all across the country ... and we didn’t want the West Coast constituents to be logging on at 6am PT each day,” explains Curtis. The day will also conclude earlier. “This is like programming a radio station, and we are looking at it with an understanding not only of cume, but of TSL and occasions,” says Brent Michaels Curtis. Look for sessions to wrap around 4pm CT daily with music and entertainment immediately following. CRS 2021: The Virtual Experience officially opens Tuesday, Feb. 16 with the all-new Digital & Streaming Summit. “We are thrilled to launch a new aspect of CRS and partner with digital platforms and DSPs [digital service providers] to kick off the week,” says Curtis. Sessions focusing on streaming, social media and data will fill the day, including a session titled “Inventing Yourself” that Curtis says is not to be missed. Wednesday through Friday sessions will look much like a traditional CRS agenda with programming, label, women’s and other networking “breakfasts” moving to digital gathering rooms; hands-on workshops in real-time focusing on topics ranging from imaging and production to compiling awards submission packages; and keynote speeches, research presentations and educational panels. Sonos Centers Radio Around Artists

Known for its wireless, multi-room home audio systems, Sonos launched its own streaming radio service last April and added the premium tier Sonos Radio HD in November. Beyond offering access to thousands of existing radio stations, Sonos is curating its own stations with an artistforward approach that, in terms of country, initiated with the creation of Dolly Parton Songteller Radio. And according to New York-based Global Head of Music Brian Beck, Sonos is just getting started in country. “She was on our dream list,” Beck says of Parton. “We thought it was the biggest Brian Beck longshot ever, but we had to try. And we’re still pinching ourselves that it happened.” Quarterbacked by John Zarling and Jackie Campbell at 615 Leverage + Strategy, the deal

and campaign resulted in a station playing music selected by Parton – her own and that of others – interspersed with stories and liners she voiced. Songteller Radio is among a stable of stations curated by Thom Yorke, Brittany Howard, Third Man Records, Bjork, The Chemical Brothers and more. In terms of user experience, those who own Sonos systems control them from a phone app, which can link to Amazon Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, Spotify, personal music libraries and other music sources. The Sonos Radio HD portion of the app automatically shows local broadcast stations, as well as ad-free Sonosgenerated format stations (Hot Country, for instance) and featured stations like Parton’s. As its name indicates, the premium tier – $7.99 a month after a free 30-day trial – is delivered in high-definition audio. “Sonos has just over 25 million users worldwide,” Beck says. “That community has been built over 15 or 16 years, and the system is so simple to use, people actually listen to music more.” Country, he adds, is one of Sonos’ mostlistened-to genres. More than static playlists, featured stations like Parton’s are continually evolving. “The artists give us music throughout the period in which a station is live,” Beck says. “What you’re hearing in January might be completely different from what you’re hearing

in June. Each of the artists we are working with is engaged and giving us new songs, stories and intros that allow us to really program each station.” Programming also includes Artist Radio Hours, which are featured on the all-genre Sound System station; Chris Stapleton will be featured soon. While the service prides itself on curation and the absence of algorithms, it is also reticent to share specifics on exactly who the people are behind the stations, beyond calling them “a network of career radio programmers specializing in their genres.” One exception is journalist Ann Powers, who is programming the HD stations Sound of Nashville and Americana. Country expansion is a focus for Beck and his team. “It’s still early days, especially without being able to travel,” he says. “But we are eager to connect with the Nashville community and all its genres and will be adding many more amazing artists to this platform. What better way to start than with Dolly Parton?” Learn more about Sonos Radio HD here; contact Beck here. –Chuck Aly

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Dan + Shay, Kristen Williams, Tom Martens, Michael Chase and the Warner/ WAR promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “I Should Probably Go To Bed.” The milestone is especially poignant in the wake of last week’s passing of the label’s Dir./Southeast Radio & Streaming Promotion Tom Dan + Shay Starr, who was one of the duo’s most ardent supporters. The song is Dan + Shay’s eighth career chart-topper. Songwriters are Sean Douglas, Jason Evigan, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney. If the top of this week’s chart seems like déjà vu, that’s because it is. Last year, on the day after the MLK Day holiday, Dan + Shay’s “10,000 Hours” replaced Lady A’s “What If I Never Get Over You” atop the chart. Exactly one year later, it’s Dan + Shay again replacing Lady A in the No. 1 position. What hasn’t been done before shows up on this week’s Add Board – a new high water mark in the Country Aircheck era. Big kudos to Kris Lamb and the Big Machine crew on racking up 152 adds for “Undivided” by Tim McGraw and Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard. The biggest one-week add total on record eclipses the May 13, 2019 mark of 149 set by Luke Combs’ “Beer Never Broke My Heart.” Undivided and conquer!

WI TH An inside look at how recently named iHeartMedia WMIL/Milwaukee PD Shanna “Quinn” Cudeck is spending her Quaran-Time: In 2020, I learned putting myself first is crucial to doing my job well. Putting work first and not taking time to read, journal or do something creative and not work-related hurts me in the long run. I set aside time to do so every day in the morning before work, and sometimes even after work, too. My quarantine routine (when I actually stick by it) is working from home in the morning. I’ve realized there’s so much I can do from my kitchen island for work versus going into the office! I then head into work to do my shows from the studio … I still prefer being there versus doing shows from my laptop. It puts me in a better state of mind for a successful show, but so much of my job I have transitioned to doing from home. My new hobbies include journaling. Every day, I’ll write down a quote that really resonated with me that day. I look forward to going back and reading them once I’ve filled the whole thing in! My work from home set-up mostly includes my laptop on my kitchen island with my lazy assistants: Sharknado and Olivia Wilde. My cats are the real stars of the show, especially when I’m on a Teams call. It’s like they know it’s

happening and will jump in front of the camera, as Chelsey from 96.3 Star Country in Madison can attest to. The station uses social media for more interactive graphics and topics. Shannen from our morning show is so good at putting stuff like that together and keeping it local. They’ll use those responses on-air, as well as doing part of their show on Streamyard where listeners can see them and interact with games and phone topics. Oh man, I’m a huge fan of The Office, and I watch it every night before I go to bed. I was super excited to hear Pam (Jenna Fisher) and Angela (Angela Kinsey) started a podcast, Office Ladies, that gives you a behind the scenes look at the show along with fun stories on the cast and shooting episodes. I listen to it on our iHeartRadio app. I recently started watching Bridgerton on Netflix, but I’m not sure if I would be so into it if it wasn’t for the Duke. Chips and guac are always a go-to, but I’ve recently become obsessed with Trader Joe’s Chile & Garlic Cashews, along with their unsalted pretzels filled with peanut butter. The silver lining in all of this is being more thankful for things we overlooked before. I’m happy I can do part of my job at home where I

CRS: Prepare For Different

(continued from page 1)

“Our Agenda Committee brought us a tremendous set of panels this year and has continued to look for ways to address the evolving needs of radio during the pandemic,” says Curtis. “Sessions will include, ‘Post Pandemic Playbook,’ ‘Talk Data To Me’ and ‘Dial & Error,’ which will be a panel offering feedback on morning show airchecks. And the research presentation will be fantastic again this year, as Clay Hunnicutt, who heads our Research Committee, has worked with his team to bring the most relevant study possible for our attendees.” Michaels touts the educational agenda’s strengths, as well: “Two must-sees are ‘Til The Wellness Runs Dry’ and ‘Blind Date With Your Audience.’ Between the rapidly changing industry and more duties being put on the average employee, it will be important to look at how we can best handle everything. Elizabeth Porter will talk about dealing with anxiety in our business, and we have a special guest hosting the blind date panel, which springboards off last year’s research panel.” Curtis notes that many CRS experiences are also going digital, including label luncheon performances, the St. Jude Networking Lounge, Bob Kingsley’s Acoustic Alley with Thomas Rhett (CAT 12/9/20) and the New Faces of Country Music showcase featuring Tenille Arts, Travis Denning, Hardy, Ashley McBryde and Matt Stell (CAT 12/14/20). “We will also have a live help desk, media center, sponsorship expo and moderated chat log, as well,” says Curtis. Artist interviews will also return; Capitol’s Luke Bryan was the first to be announced (CAT 10/28/20), but Curtis assures attendees there will be more announced soon. “We are excited about the number of artists participating this year, either performing during a luncheon or showcase, or participating in an interview,” notes Curtis. An artist-related favorite is also returning for the first time in several years: digital liners for radio. “We have worked with all of the labels and will be providing generalized liners for radio station attendees to download,” Curtis says. “We are also going to be offering video interview pieces and accompanying scripts that stations can use for social media and websites, or use the audio for on-air elements.” This year will be seminar’s first venture into the digital space, but Curtis points to the organization’s ongoing CRS360 series as a

Page 12

jumping off point: “The attendance has been fantastic for our 360 webinars, and we are using that space to tease upcoming CRSexclusive content. We’ll also take deeper dives into CRS panels after the fact.” Metrics including views and engagement with CRS panels will inform which topics deserve further conversation in upcoming CRS360 sessions. “We typically take head counts in person and survey folks in the CRS app to gauge interest and get feedback; going digital this year affords us the opportunity to look at real-time statistics and take a dive into the metrics of each panel,” Curtis says. “In addition to our traditional surveys, they can help us design next year’s agenda for a return in-person.” And that return is absolutely in the works. “We know there are CRS elements that can’t be replicated online – a drink with friends at Barlines, the connection of in-person meetings, the electricity of hearing music in a live setting and even selfies with colleagues in the hallways,” Curtis says. “But we are also excited about the doors this digital platform can open.” In addition to a lower price point, which Curtis hopes will allow more people to attend, CRS 2021: The Virtual Experience will also include a handful of on-demandonly educational sessions. “We didn’t have to say ‘no’ to any of the Agenda Committee’s ideas this year!” exclaims Curtis. “Some panels will only be available that way because there just aren’t enough hours in the day.” Additionally, live workshops, keynotes and panels will also be available 24 hours after the session’s conclusion. “With this model, each attendee will have a log-in and password, and all content will be available on-demand via the website for 60 days,” says Curtis. However, musical performances will only be available to attendees live. Curtis believes this model opens the door for future on-demand CRS content and a wider selection of educational panels living across in-person and digital experiences. “We could look at what is happening this year and hang our heads and feel defeated, but our team has chosen to make the most of this and find ways to turn it into a positive,” explains Curtis. “This is going to allow us to grow CRS in attendance and subject matter and keep us at the forefront of continuing education for the format.” CRS 2021: The Virtual Experience takes place Feb. 16-19; register here. –Monta Vaden Lon Helton, lon@countryaircheck.com Chuck Aly, chuck@countryaircheck.com Caitlin DeForest, caitlin@countryaircheck.com Monta Vaden, monta@countryaircheck.com Chris Huff, chris@countryaircheck.com

“Radio is a people business, and I’m a people person. I have a strong ability to connect on-air, on social and in person and am relatable and approachable. I also have a deep passion for non-profit work and was awarded The Judges Award by the Association of Non-Profits in 2019 recognizing my more than 200 hours of non-profit work in Northwest Arkansas. I’m also the ultimate ‘planner;’ I plan my work and work my plan daily, and in doing so, I’ve stayed on top of my game and on top of the ratings.”
