Granger Talks After MidNite

A month out from the announcement he would take over as host of Premiere Network’s nationally syndicated After MidNite (CAT 12/8/21), and with a couple weeks’ worth of shows under his belt, Wheelhouse artist Granger Smith checks in with Country Aircheck to discuss taking on this new challenge and how it has become a natural extension of his existing brand. CA: At any point in your career, did you consider moving into radio, or did this come about by happenstance? GS: This was never a consideration for me, let alone a goal. I’ve learned we can’t really Granger Smith have long-term goals. In fact, we shouldn’t have long-term goals in our life, because you’re putting yourself in a corner. You couldn’t have told me 10 years ago I’d be hosting a nationally syndicated radio show, so thank goodness I didn’t plan this! I allowed myself a more flexible idea of the future so that when this came along, I could look at it as an opportunity instead of something that didn’t fit within my plan. What was your reaction when you were approached? “Are you sure you want me?” They say they’d thought of me as a potential host for a long time, but I still don’t totally believe them. Ha! When Premiere brought this to me, they said they needed an answer quickly, because it came late in the game at the end of 2021. Once my brother [and manager Tyler Smith] convinced me it wasn’t a joke, I got on the phone and really considered it as they were walking me through their vision for the show. I thought it sounded great and asked what they needed; they said, “We just need you to say yes.” So, I did. I had to jump in that moment and figure out how to land later. (continued on page 5)

Who’s Driving ‘Em Home?

Three weeks ago, Country Aircheck dug into Nielsen’s November PPM releases to see which Country morning shows were waking up the most people (CAW 12/29/21). But who’s driving them home? CA went back to the November data to see which afternoon shows were reaching the most listeners. In terms of single-station cume, KKBQ/Houston’s 378,600 in afternoon drive was 100,000+ listeners greater than the top single-station cume in morning drive, WUSN/Chicago’s 265,600. Anthony and Unlike morning drive, during which The Heather Bobby Bones Show airs on 16 stations, the

Congratulations to Michael Ray, Kristen Williams, Tom Martens, Shari Roth and the Warner/WEA promotion team on holding at No. 1 for a second week with “Whiskey And Rain.” The song becomes Ray’s first multi-week No. 1 and the first for the WEA imprint since Kenny Chesney’s “Get Michael Ray Along” in July 2018. Songwriters are Jesse Frasure and Josh Thompson. Kudos to Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines and the Broken Bow crew on scoring 84 adds for “Trouble With A Heartbreak” by Jason Aldean. OFF THE RECORD Off The Record with Back Blocks’ Ashley Cooke: I think the biggest lesson I learned during the pandemic was to go with the flow and try new things more often. If I didn’t randomly make a TikTok video out of boredom, my life would look completely different right now. It’s easy to get stuck in a routine … getting out of that routine is such a key lesson. I grew up listening to WKIS/Miami. The very first time I heard myself on ASHLEY COOKE the radio, I was sitting in a Publix parking lot in West Palm Beach with some of my best friends in the car listening to Women of iHeartCountry. They played a song I wrote about my best friend passing from cancer called “Jealous of the Sky,” and even though I’m not usually a crier, I freaking bawled. I just put out the first half of my first project, Already Drank That Beer - Side A, and it’s all about the stories and phases of a relationship and breakup. I went through a pretty toxic relationship and wrote exactly where I was at. Basically, a journal entry put to music. I think there’s something for everyone — a song to describe all the phases. I wish I’d written Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” or Kenny Chesney’s “Knowing You.” Both songs are so heartbreakingly beautiful and simplistic. They uniquely capture such universally felt experiences. That’s exactly what every song should aim to do. Right this second, my favorite song on the radio is Hardy’s “Give Heaven Some Hell.” That song rocked me to my core when I heard it. I’m currently bingeing Yellowstone! I’m on season three and can’t stop watching. I think I binged two seasons in a week. My favorite TikTok account is Anna Sitar. She’s so real. Plus, she even used my song in one of her videos! In 2022, expect lots of new music and touring with Cole Swindell and Travis Denning!

I’ve known [outgoing After MidNite host] Cody [Alan] for years – he was my very first radio interview in Dallas 22 years ago! – and he gave me solid advice. He told me if I had someone I loved and felt comfortable with as a producer, I should mention it to Premiere.

I sent a text to the team and asked about bringing Antman on board [Read Allen’s Off The Record here]. They were very receptive, and I’m glad we were able to make it happen. Antman and I have worked together a long time. He knows how I think and talk. We’ve gotten to the point already where he understands how to lay out notes for me. I’m talking to Antman as much as I’m talking to my wife some days! We have to be on top of current events, so we can’t put a show together eight days in advance and just go with it.

Hosting a well-established, nationally syndicated radio show as an artist has its pros and cons. How do you view your role as a broadcaster? I think about Tony Romo a lot. What I lack in broadcasting experience and radio hosting qualifications, I hope I make up as Tony does with an insider perspective and different dynamic. I know the guys who are touring and writing songs. I’ve toured with them. I’ve been onstage and stood side-stage watching fan reactions, and I’ve been to every city where I’m now broadcasting. We talked just last week about Thomas Rhett playing a show in Minnesota in negative-10-degree weather. I instantly knew how that must have felt for Thomas, his band and crew, and I was able to relay that on the show. Doing the show from your personal studio, how are you creating the atmosphere? Is it similar to your recording process? Going into the room and turning on the mic to record a show is interesting, because it’s very therapeutic. I usually light a candle, dim the lights and make a cup of tea. This has a similar vibe to singing vocals for a record. I go into the same room and use the same headphones, but I use a different mic. When I’m singing vocals, I hold my phone up [horizontally] close to my face, right next to the mic, and sing into the mic. Doing After MidNite has been similar so far. I have my decaffeinated tea on my cup warmer, hold my phone up next to my face, and cut the show. Another one of my quirks is that I don’t read ahead; I have to read it as it comes, because if I look ahead at hour three while I’m cutting hour one, it throws me off. I’m not a good multitasker! Earl Dibbles, Jr. has become a well-known part of

the Granger Smith brand. Is he a member of the After MidNite team, as well? Earl will definitely be part of the show, we just aren’t certain exactly how or where we’ll use him. I can see him being part of the imaging like Antman and I have done with KASE/Austin, and I can see maybe giving him his own funny segment. Why stay based in the Austin area versus broadcasting from Nashville? We are keeping everything here in Texas on my ranch, and I see nothing but benefits to that, honestly. The selfish part is I get to do it in my pajamas! But I get to be with my wife and kids, which brings an authenticity to the show. I want people to feel like I’m one of them, and maybe I’ll remind them of someone from their hometown. I can also travel with this setup, so I’ll be able to do the show on the road while I’m touring. To start the new year, I did the show in a cabin closet in snowy Idaho! How do you fit After MidNite into the time you also are devoting to your career, the Yee Yee brand and everything else? Juggling all the responsibilities is nothing new for me, but when I took this on, the first thing I cut was sleep! Ha! Being present as a husband and father is at the top of the list, so nothing can ever cut into that piece of the pie. Honestly, this has helped me look at where I’m spending my time and cut out wasteful minutes and hours spent scrolling Instagram or Facebook. And, I’ve hired a new kid to help on the farm, so that takes some things off my plate, too. As far as the show goes, the listeners are number one for me, which means I don’t think I always need to be out with the artists. My show will be different in that way, because I trust Antman to handle some interviews and get great content if the calendar is stacked up with events. Have other radio professionals reached out to you? What has the reaction been? I’ve been fortunate to build great relationships at Country radio, and I don’t have any enemies in the industry. Radio people are my kind of people ... they genuinely love life and are excited about what they can do for the community. They offer support in ways a lot of other jobs don’t, because they know shopping local or going to Joe’s Car Wash is keeping food on everyone’s table. I love that, and I hope there’s no sense of competition between us, because I’m coming in with less experience than anyone! I’m just excited to be here, and so far, everyone has been so supportive in considering me a peer for the first time. We’re in this together. –Monta Vaden CAC
