Station Analysis: Biggest Year Ever

Which Country station on the West Coast enjoyed the most ratings success last year? Hint: It’s not in the U.S. CJJR/ Vancouver, BC – branded as “93.7 JR Country” – closed out 2019 with a 5.1 share, but in the four quarterly surveys since has trended 7.1 – 9.2 – 10.2 – 8.1. That made 2020 the biggest year in the station’s 35-year history. CJJR is now the top music station in Canada’s second-largest Englishspeaking market. To find out what’s behind CJJR’s run, Dustin Collins Country Aircheck spoke with PD Dustin Collins, who started at the Jim Pattison Group/Vancouver duo that also includes Alternative CKPK just over a year ago following time programming crosstown Corus Rock CFOX & Classic Rock CFMI. “The day I started, the Fall [2019] book came in, and it was a rough one for JR,” Collins says. “We were thinking about what we needed to do going forward, then March kicked in, and everything went sideways.” Peoples Courted: Citywide lockdown may have actually benefited CJJR. “What we saw was [stations] that were background music, that lived and died by people being in offices, suffered,” he says. “The ‘passionate stations,’ [where listeners] connected with their personalities, thrived. People working from home have the opportunity to seek out the stations they really want.” CJJR’s veteran airstaff consists of teams in both morning and afternoon drive. “I would love to be able to have teams throughout the day,” says Collins. “People can get their music anywhere, and they can get it commercial free. So, it’s what’s happening between the latest Luke Combs and Eric Church songs that will hopefully hook people and get them calling the station their own. When you’ve got two voices sharing ideas with differing opinions, it’s ideal – especially in a year like 2020. If it’s just one person sharing their opinion, it can limit how a listener relates to the station.” (continued on page 9)

Twenty Years Of Top Stations

Two decades ago, radio deregulation was still in its infancy and the massive technological shift in how listening is measured was years away. Nevertheless, there are constants to be found in analyzing Country’s stop stations in the years 2000, 2010 and 2020. To start, Country Aircheck looked at the stations in current PPM markets with the largest cumes. Beginning with the Fall 2000 book (which was diary) and the averages for October, November and December for 2010 (the first quarter in which all markets had converted to PPM), figures were similarly compiled for the same time frame in 2020. Of course, any comparison of data from one side of the Diary/PPM divide to the other will be a bit of apples and oranges, so the primary focus is placed on rankings. While PPM cume numbers took a big jump from diary totals, there is still stability across the decades. Most notably, five stations (highlighted) made the top 10 in each period: WUSN/Chicago, KSCS/Dallas, WYCD/Detroit, KILT/Houston and KPLX/ Dallas, which landed atop both the 2010 and 2020 rankers. Interestingly, three of the top 10 stations in 2000 no longer exist. KMPS/Seattle left the format in December 2017;

KZLA/Los Angeles topped the 2000 cume list, but exited the format in August 2006. Not surprisingly, the station that filled that format void six months later (KKGO) quickly put Los Angeles back on the cume ranking, ensuring the market’s representation across all three samples. In 2000, New York was represented on the list by the WYNY “Y107” trimulcast of three small suburban signals surrounding the city. WYNY left the format in 2002, leaving New York without a Country station until the launch of WNSH in 2013. Despite its large cume, Y107 only pulled a 0.9 share in New York in the Fall 2000 book. While cume rank naturally favors the largest markets, assessing top stations by share offers a greater variety of markets and stations. For these rankers, Country Aircheck expanded the field to the top 20 and found nine stations in all three decades: WPOC/ Baltimore, WUBE/Cincinnati, WGAR/Cleveland, WCOL/ Columbus, WWYZ/Hartford, WMIL/Milwaukee, KEEY/ Minneapolis, WQDR/Raleigh and WFMS/Indianapolis. The latter topped both 2000 and 2010.

Unlike the 2000 cume ranker, all 20 stations in the 2000 share ranker are still in the format and doing well (although WDAF/Kansas City was still on the AM band in 2000). In fact, longevity is one of the biggest commonalities for stations in the share rankings, as the youngest station to appear is WPAW/ Greensboro, which signed on in October 2006 and made the 2010 ranker. Several of the stations that appear on all three share lists also have another factor in common: they are either the only station in their market in the format, or they do not have significant, full-market competitor. Perhaps one of the most striking aspects of these rankings are the now non-existent ownership represented. While the names have changed, the number of owners represented has remained stable. The 30 stations represented in 2000 and 11 different owners, while in 2010 it was 13 owners and in 2020, 12. If seeking to predict 2030, the markets represented on the cume list would be a safe bet. And there’s a good chance several of the stations on the 2020 share list will still be there in 2030. –Chris Huff

WI TH A look at how singer/songwriter and host of Apple Music Country’s The Tiera Show is spending her Quaran-Time: I’ve honestly been enjoying quarantine. I’m a homebody, so being able to write and work from home has been a dream. I started my own radio show on Apple Music during the pandemic, so I record with my producers on FaceTime every morning, and it’s such great start to the day. I’ll usually head into a Zoom write or work on social media content if I’m not writing, then play with the pup when work is done. Something I’ve learned is I’m not very good at TikTok. My fiancée and I just got a new Goldendoodle puppy, so we’ve been spending a lot more time outside with him. I’ve been a lot more creative since quarantine. My fiancée and I started a podcast and have been creating a ton of content together for my music. I didn’t really like Zoom writes at

the beginning of quarantine — and still prefer in person writes — but it’s been nice getting to write with people that aren’t in town that I wouldn’t normally be able to write with. I’ve always loved connecting with my fans through social media, and that’s only grown during the pandemic. It was kind of a trend to share unreleased music on Instagram, but I’ve really enjoyed it and so have my fans, so I’ve kept it going. We’re watching the new season of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19. I think we might go back and watch Grey’s from the beginning once we finish. As for snacks, it’s apples and peanut butter. Obsessed. I’ve had so many life-changing things happen to me since quarantine: getting engaged, signing my first publishing deal and getting a radio show on Apple Music. I’m grateful for all of those moments, especially in the midst of everything that’s going on.

lineup is Kristen Jade, who started in middays last year and remotely handles the shift on two of Pattison’s sister stations. Because of their experience, Collins gives his jocks a wide berth. “At this level, I don’t want to put stringent guidelines on how much or how little to talk,” he says. “As long as they put it through the filter of ‘is this interesting and engaging?’” Remaining upbeat on the air in 2020 was a challenge at times. “The hardest thing for some of our hosts was to be honest about what they’re experiencing when the world’s gone to shit,” Collins says. “If [listeners] are talking about something and the station doesn’t even address it, how connected are we to their lives? Are we just wallpaper? We have to be able to provide that connection, [or there’s] no point in what we’re doing.” Stats The Fact: CJJR’s music is roughly 60/40 current/ recurrent to gold, most of which is from the past decade. As for currents, Collins leaves those to MD Jaxon Hawks. The pair have weekly callout at their disposal and aren’t afraid to go all-in on songs that may not be hits everywhere else. “The most recent one to make us scratch our heads was the Dierks Bentley side project [Hot Country Knights],” Collins says. “We blasted the crap out of ‘Pick Her Up,’ and it continues to be one of our highest-testing songs. Inside the bubble of our industry, it may be seen as a novelty, [but we] really try to not get too wrapped up in the labels and the management. We want to foster those relationships, but we’ve got to do what’s right for our station and the audience.” Unlike U.S. stations, CJJR is bound by CanCon (Canadian Content), which requires 35% of aired music to be of Canadian origin. That means two of four MAPL criteria are met: Music (composer), Artist, Performance (place of recording) and Lyrics (songwriter). “CanCon is a blessing and a curse,” Collins says. “A lot of times, great Canadian music is hindered because of the perception that Canadians only play [a] song because they have to, when a lot of it’s really good. It’s a reality we have to live with, but we are shameless in how tight we run our playlist. We know the artists that do well.” While Nielsen and its Canadian counterpart Numeris measure listening with the same PPM equipment, how they tabulate ratings is drastically different. With Nielsen, a station must receive five minutes of listening in a quarter-hour to earn credit for that quarter-hour. With Numeris, stations get credit for every minute of listening. There are no quarter-hours, which negates the strategy of clustering tune-outs around quarter-hour boundaries. In this environment, Collins’ strategy is simple. “How can we get the best sweeps of music?” he says. “We’re not necessarily looking at ratings reflecting where we put our spot sets, but we will look at [other stations’ clocks] and shift ours [accordingly]. In Canada, we haven’t yet succumbed to the kind of pure PPM programming you see in the States. That could very well be the result of minute-

by-minute [ratings detail], and we see how insane it is.” Instead, Collins leans heavily on basic radio fundamentals. “Make sure we’re playing the best music, that we’re in the music before our competitor is, and that we have as many great sweeps as possible with the shortest commercial breaks we can manage.” Channel Surfing: Even with CJJR’s success and a different ratings methodology, Collins is as subject to the winds of modern radio as any stateside PD. “You ride the wave when you can and, when it’s not there, try figuring out how to get back on it,” he says. “Sometimes you’re doing everything right, but you’re just not catching the meters. That’s when you fall back on your strategic plan instead of the common trap of, ‘Ratings are bad, let’s blow everything up.’” He is well aware of his advantages, as well. “I don’t want to be cliché, but there is something to say about our music selection process still being done in-house and working one-on-one with our talent,” Collins says. “Patterson Broadcasting is a large broadcaster, but privately owned, so there is a real sense of family to it. Holiday 2020 PPM Scoreboard Total country radio shares were down 43.1 points (-13.1%) from the December to Holiday books. Compared to the previous year, Holiday 2020 shares were down 13.3 points (-4.5%), putting country at its lowest total in PPM measurement. Of 84 stations listed, only 11 were were up, and of those 11, only two grew by more than half a share (WIRK and WKDF.) 71 stations were down in share, with eight of those hitting all-time PPM lows. Overall cume was down 1.96 million (-8.3%) compared to last month; and was off 7.38 million (-23.7%) year to year. This is country’s
