Months after a slate of “interpolated” country songs made headlines, an aggressive second wave is making the first seem like a mere ripple. The songs incorporate a well-known musical riff or lyric from a previous hit into a new work, typically also extending songwriting credit to the authors of the original source material. Creatively and programmatically, interpolations can be polarizing even as they may be effective “cheat codes” for worming their way into listeners’ ears. While such songs have long existed in country music – think Jake Owen’s 2018 John Mellencamp-infused “I Was Jack (You Were Diane)” or Kid Rock’s 2008 Warren Zevon/Lynyrd Skynrdinflected “All Summer Long” – their prevalence grew last year with Cole Swindell’s “She Had Me At Heads Carolina” and Kane Brown’s “Like I Love Country Music.” Both reached No. 1 with interpolations of songs by Jo Dee Messina, and Brooks & Dunn and Alan Jackson, respectively. Earlier this year, Morgan Wallen’s “Everything I Love” interpolated portions of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider” before Owen added his “On The Boat Again” to the mix, putting a nautical twist on a Willie Nelson classic. In more recent weeks, examples have included Brown’s “I Can Feel It” (interpolating Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight)”; Chris Young’s “Young Love & Saturday Nights” (which borrows a guitar lick from David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel”); Dustin Lynch & Jelly Roll’s “Chevrolet” (which mimics a melody from Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away”); Madeline Merlo’s “Tim & Faith” (which uses two lines and bit of the melody from the titular singers’ “It’s Your Love” duet); Morgan Evans’ “Thank God She’s A Country Girl” (reinterpreting John Denver classic “Thank God I’m A Country Boy”); (continued on page 8)

by Lon Helton In recent days I had the honor of attending the induction ceremonies of both the National Radio Hall of Fame and the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Both were vivid portraits of the power of radio – and reminded me why I love radio so much. If you’re ever looking to get re-energized, head to any Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and witness first-hand the passion and commitment of those who put the magic in the speakers. New York City was the first stop, where Country Radio Hall of Famer Gerry House was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame Thursday (11/2). Chris “Mad Dog” Russo hosted the event, which also presented radio’s highest honor to John DeBella, Deborah Parenti, Bob Rivers, Pat Gerry House St. John, Shadoe Stevens, Nina Totenberg and

Charles Warfield. Twelve others were honored posthumously as 2023 Legends, including longtime Country personality Terry Dorsey. Inducting House into the NRHoF via video were Keith Urban and Dolly Parton. She began, “Gerry House, if you don’t deserve to be in the Radio Hall of Fame, I don’t know who is.” “My sole reason for being here is to brag on my good friend Gerry House,” said Urban. “The first time I ever heard my music on the radio when Chris Huff I moved to Nashville was on Gerry’s program. He’s been a great supporter and a great friend from the beginning.” House regaled the suit-and-gown crowd with a series of one-liners that had them laughing, while reminding them what radio means to people. “My mother was on my show a lot,” he said. “When I worked at 50,000-watt WSM-AM, it was the first time she could hear me in Kentucky. I called one day and asked if she had heard the show. She said, ‘Oh honey, there were so many people listening to you Patti Diaz that by the time it got to me, the station was just wore out.’ She thought people pulled a piece of the signal out of the sky.” Patting his heart, House concluded, “I think she was right. People do take a piece of radio out of the sky. And they put it right here.” Saturday in Kilgore, TX – home to the Texas Broadcast Museum (yes, it takes a day, but you can get to Kilgore from NYC) – 20 individuals were inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, including Country Aircheck’s Chris Huff. Finally, as left field as this may sound, should you ever find yourself near Kilgore, TX, do yourself a favor and head to the Texas Broadcast Museum. It’s a shrine to all of radio and TV. Thousands of radios and TVs of all vintages, plus boards, cart machines, Victrolas, reel-to-reel machines – every piece of equipment that ever graced a control room.

Gorley, Davis Top ASCAP Awards

Ashley Gorley took home his 10th ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award at the 61st ASCAP Country Music Awards tonight (11/6) at The Twelve Thirty Club in Nashville. Ten of the 50 songs recognized during the ceremony as the most-performed of the year were penned by Gorley. One of those, “You Proof,” was also named ASCAP’s Country Song of the Year. With tonight’s win, Gorley extends his streak as the most-awarded ASCAP writer in the Country format. His win for “You Proof” was his third in the Country Song of the Year category. Jordan Davis took home his first honor as Country Ashley Gorley Music Songwriter/Artist of the Year, and two of his songs (“Next Thing You Know” and “What My World Spins Around”) were among the 50 most-performed honorees. Sony Music Publishing, which represents 21 of this year’s most-performed songs including “You Proof” (alongside co-publishers Round Hill Songs and Caleb’s College Fund), was named Country Music Publisher of the Year. (continued from page 1) Mackenzie Carpenter’s “Country Girls (Just Wanna Have Fun)” (reimagining Cyndi Lauper’s bestknown hit); and Sawyer Brown’s “Under This Old Hat” (with musical nods to both the Eagles’ “Take It Easy” and The Who’s “I Can See For Miles”). While not classically “interpolations,” a second category of songs merely reference a title or line of lyrics from an earlier smash, like Thomas Rhett Marci Braun ft. Riley Green’s 2022 hit “Half Of Me,” which found them singing, “I think old Alan Jackson said it best / ‘It’s five o’clock somewhere’.” Among this year’s crop, Anne Wilson’s “Rain In The Rearview” references Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take The Wheel,” and the opening line of Matt Stell’s new “Breakin’ In Boots” quotes John Anderson’s “Straight Tequila Night.” Both types of songs offer a little pop of instant familiarity, which Audacy Regional Brand Bruce Logan Mgr. Marci Braun says makes listeners feel like they “already know the song.” But Country programmers are still figuring out best practices for such singles, which they say are likely to continue working only if they don’t become so common that they’re no longer special. Hubbard WIRK/West Palm Beach OM/PD Bruce Logan says, “Anything that makes people like any song is good for us” at radio. “A familiar hook/ George King guitar riff/drum solo can be an earworm people really like.” Westwood One VP/GM George King agrees, “The familiarity really helps a song. It’s like a nice surprise when you

first hear it, and then the expectation when you hear the song again. Plus, there’s a whole new generation of listeners that probably have never heard these songs before, or remember their parents listening to these when they were younger. So, we’re introducing or reintroducing these iconic tunes to them.” Albright & O’Malley & Brenner Consulting Partner Kenny Jay says, “These types of songs stand out especially to new format P1s and P2s. Even if they are a bit polarizing, I like stand out songs on the radio. ‘So-so,’ passionless records don’t help anyone. Interpolation may not increase the odds of the song being a hit, but it will give us a read faster to see what we have. “These types of songs haven’t proven to turn into country power gold, but they provide a spark of fun for the moment,” Jay adds. “Enjoy Kenny Jay the moment – they all don’t have to be 55-week songs on your station.” King thinks there’s probably a limit to how many “interpolated” songs the audience will embrace, and wonders, “Why does it seem every time something new happens in Country music, everybody jumps on the bandwagon? “The current batch of interpolations sound very good, just enough [familiarity] without totally ripping off the original,” he adds. “It’s the amount of these new interpolated songs coming out at the same time that will eventually burn out the sub-genre. Then, we’ll just have to wait for the next new ‘thing.’” Says Braun, “Sampling a song/using lyrics isn’t anything new to this format, or any format for that matter. I think we’ll know when someone does it wrong. In terms of number of songs, I don’t think there’s a limit, but it comes down to how you schedule your music to balance it out.” Adds Jay, that might necessitate a need to balance them “like we do other types of songs” and playing “the ones your audience will react to.” “I have never been angry about having too many great songs,” says Logan. “Eventually I guess we might need a sound code to separate them for variety purposes only, but I don’t see this [as] an issue” now. He believes figuring out a way to touch on an old song but still create something fresh is a skill that should be “left to the song creators. But I think as long as the sample is used in a respectful way that honors the audience’s fond memories of the song, it will be fine.” In part two of this story, songwriters weigh in ... including one who calls the tactic “cheat codes.” Coming soon. –Phyllis Stark
