Finding Life Beyond Radio

As companies continue furloughs and staff reductions, radio pros may be considering a career change or wondering if their skills and experience can translate to other industries. Moving from one market or station to another may be common in radio, but leaving the industry entirely can be a difficult and emotional leap, as Country Aircheck learns from three industry vets. Longtime Boston programmer Ginny “Rogers” Brophey, who exited iHeartMedia’s WBWL in January due to budget cuts (CAT 1/15), is now a Patient Care Tech at Fresenius Kidney Care. She Ginny Brophey hit upon her newest career path during a medical mission trip to Nicaragua with her daughter, a physician’s assistant. “We barely made it out of Nicaragua before borders started closing, and that’s when I realized there are other options in this world other than in my bubble,” says Brophey, who harbored a passion for the medical field before falling in love with radio. As months progressed and radio companies made further cuts, Brophey gave herself a deadline: “If I didn’t find an industry job by August, I’d go back to school for phlebotomy.” When the deadline passed, she found courses and in-person learning were limited by the pandemic, so she applied for a job in a dialysis unit. “The benefits are great, the paid training was 12 weeks and it includes phlebotomy,” shares Brophey. “I wear scrubs every day, deal with sick patients on dialysis and, yes, I stick them with big needles! I love it. It’s intense and exciting to know I am making a difference in their lives.” Then-Scripps KTTS/Springfield, MO Dir./Traffic & Promotions and on-air personality Jordan “Jay Cross” Norcross worked for the station when the group won both ACM and CMA Small Market Radio Station of the Year in 2016 and 2018 before he was let go. During his tenure, Norcross worked with The American Cancer Society promoting the local Cattle Baron’s Ball, and the organization’s leadership was so impressed with how he handled that project and previous ones, they (continued on page 9)

CMA Remotes Go Virtual

Amid an ongoing pandemic, the Country Music Association (CMA) staff and membership head into a CMA Awards week unlike any other before – and hopefully unlike any other to come. Ahead of Wednesday night’s (11/11) 54th Annual CMA Awards, airing live from Nashville’s Music City Center on ABC at 8pm ET, CMA VP/Marketing Catherine Frizzell tells Country Aircheck how the organization is executing this week’s virtual radio remotes. Catherine Taking place today and tomorrow (11/9Frizzell 10) at Music City Center, the radio row combines online elements and social distancing to execute a scaled back version of the traditional remotes. “CMA is working with all national radio groups to share content across

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Mountain Road Records’ Rayne Johnson: I’m a homebody, so I haven’t really missed going out. I’m lucky I can still spend any free time I have outdoors with my family. Discovering grocery delivery has really been a gamechanger, and I don’t know why I didn’t do that before quarantine. Coffee … always coffee first! After that, every day is different. Zoom calls and virtual writing sessions change by the day. I live by my iCalendar. I’d be lost without it. I live with my wife and kiddos. We’re an outdoorsy family, so that helps a lot with the stir craziness. We can hop in the Jeep and be on a hiking trail in 15 minutes from our house. There’s a lot of driveway basketball and backyard football. Now that college football is back, that’s what Saturday afternoons are for. I’ve always enjoyed hunting, but during this downtime in warm weather, I’ve gotten into fishing. My best friend is a seasoned fisherman, and I’ve learned from him and expanded my fishing knowledge.

I look at quarantine affecting my creativity both ways. I still feel creative but have had to adjust my habits. I’m lucky to have been in the studio working within social distancing guidelines. Writing has continued, but through virtual sessions. It’s also been fun coming up with new ways to interact with fans via lives on social media platforms. I started a digital show eight weeks ago called Rayne’n & Pourin’ that’s been a blast! I know many of my fans even better now, and hopefully they feel the same. I even love going onto other artists’ live sessions to learn more about them and what they’re doing during this time. It’s the closest thing to sitting in their living rooms as you can get. I’m bingeing Yellowstone, Outer Banks and the Dr. Duck series on Realtree 365’s new app with my go-to snacks: avocado toast, dove poppers, smashed avocado with salsa and jalapeños and chips for dipping. Embarrassingly enough, I even learned how to play Fortnite. All-in-all, my family and I have enjoyed our time together and a lot of dinners at the table.

top markets,” explains Frizzell. “Many of the artists participating in the show will come through the remotes before or after they rehearse, just like usual, but instead of in-person interviews, the artists will interview with each radio participant virtually via Zoom, Skype, or the like.” The scaled-back nature of the event means fewer interviews for the artists and more cooperative sharing of assets within company-owned stations, similar in nature to the workflow created by many groups during September’s 55th ACM Awards event week (CAW 9/21). In light of the current mask mandates in the greater Nashville area and with the number of coronavirus cases on the rise, Frizzell and her team have put a hefty emphasis on safety for the remotes. “We are following all CDC guidelines and protocols to make sure

we are providing the safest environment possible,” she says. “All staff and crew onsite are required to wear PPE and must practice social and physical distancing.” Additionally, every artist will receive their own sanitized, pre-packaged headphones and a mic with a brand-new windscreen – it’s like Christmas for radio pros. “No gear will be reused during the remotes, and every person setting foot onsite must be tested [for coronavirus] before arriving,” notes Frizzell. “There will be daily medical checks with temperature reading, as well.” In addition to health screenings and sanitization protocols, safe social distancing is a top priority. In lieu of an event that typically includes small booths of pipe and drape flooded with artists, their teams and multiple radio personalities, all moving about the room

in a bob-and-weave that leads to side conversations, hallway small talk and more hugs than handshakes, this year’s event will include a barebones staff and a limited number of personnel accompanying each artist. “The room will be setup in a one-way path, so once the artist enters, he or she will move from interview to interview in one direction, never backtracking,” notes Frizzell. “All crew, artists and staff will have clear enter and exit signs that must be followed, and while going through the remotes, only one person may accompany the artist.” Participating radio groups will each be represented with a laptop and tech setup in an individual booth, and upon entering that area, the artist will plug in their provided headphones and mic to complete the interview before traveling to the next station. Onsite staff will handle tech and engineering needs as well as time allotments and communications back to the radio teams offsite. Cons? Less physical contact, fewer radio participants overall and Zoom screen shots instead of photos of fully embracing colleagues. Pros? Fewer hours spent on hair and makeup, the possibility of wearing pajama pants while working and, of course, protecting the health and safety of all involved. In exchange for participation in the virtual radio row, “broadcasters are committing to various items for promotional support, including live and pre-recorded on-air mentions, as well as pre-recorded streaming spots, social media posts, email marketing and website banner placement,” says Frizzell. Interviews with artists can be used leading up to or immediately following the CMA Awards broadcast with the hopes of further engaging an at-home audience consuming a steady diet of online content in a year mostly devoid of live entertainment. CMA is also making content and assets available to stations unable to participate in the remotes; artwork, copy points, television and radio spots and digital promos are among the materials available here. –Monta Vaden

offered him a job. “I watched my former PD Mark Grantin battle cancer for six of the seven years I knew him and saw firsthand what he went through,” admits Norcross. “He taught me so much and really helped me grow as a person. Now, I work in his honor.” A 30-year radio career took DeAnna Lee all over the south before landing in Seattle for the last decade. After losing her job at KKWF in September (CAT 9/11), she switched her focus to a business she’d been building for decades: DeAnna Lee Dance and the Boot Boogie Babes. A unique example of brand extension, Lee started her dance business when she signed on with her first radio gig at KTCS/ Ft. Smith, AR. “I would teach line dancing at the country bar once a week, and it was supported by the station as a promotion,” says Lee. “I wasn’t just talking to listeners at concerts, on the phone or on social media, I was teaching them a life skill – how to dance. It immediately connected me with listeners on a deeper level.” In every market thereafter, she had the support of the station as both a radio talent and dance instructor, and now, she’s “thriving.” Not An Easy Decision: “It was emotional,” says Brophey of taking a job outside of radio. “But when you need benefits and unemployment is running out, you have to prioritize.” Lee agrees, saying, “I had worked through those emotions for many years knowing this was ultimately going to be my path.” She adds what could be an uncomfortable truth: “Let’s be honest. If you’re in radio, you know it’s not forever. You need to have a plan.” After her husband made it clear that his move from Nashville to Seattle years ago was the last time, Lee knew when KKWF said goodbye, it would be the end of her radio career. “I had been preparing myself for that for a while.”

Page 9

“When it happened to me, I didn’t know what to do,” admits Norcross. “But I had a good support system. Relationships, networking and staying in touch with people you’ve had success with is key. I still stay in touch with people from the stations and currently work with two KTTS personalities on one of our campaigns.” Trade Skills: For many, radio is the only industry in which they’ve worked, but the tools in the broadcaster’s toolbox are varied. “You wear a lot of hats in radio: marketing, communication, social media, event management, leadership, email marketing and promotions,” explains Norcross. Brophey expands the experience radio provides, noting, “Networking helped me find another passion in my work life. Juggling hours with late night concerts and getting up early to listen to my morning show proved flexibility.” Norcross’ experience at the St. Jude Country Cares seminar in Memphis inspired a new fundraising program: Songs For Hope. “A lot of non-profits, including ACS, are struggling with donations due to COVID-19, as in-person events are a major donation creator.” After the idea of a local concert Check Please: Norcross (l) fundraiser came, he brings in a donation. wondered, “What would Mark Grantin do?” The answer: a virtual show. The Facebook Live performances have helped raise more than $35,000 and are now being replicated in other markets. “Radio provided me with ease of talking to people and finding the common thread to make them comfortable and trust me,” adds Brophey. “So many people have the compassion to work in medicine, but not the personality.” Working with St. Jude also gave Brophey a charity angle to help make people aware of the need for kidney donors. “It’s a personal decision, but I hope to make more people aware of being an organ donor. It can save so many lives.” “Relationships are important, and they don’t just fade away because you’re not on an FM signal anymore,” concludes Lee.

WITH A day in the self-isolated life of New South WUSJ/Jackson, MS PD/Morning Host Traci Lee: More than 70% of our audience was considered essential according to a survey we conducted, so we knew we needed to be there for them, providing information and lifting them up. How do you navigate something for which there is no playbook? You just do the best you can and hope your management protects you. Ours did, and I’m grateful for that. As a locally owned station, we were fortunate enough to not have anyone furloughed or see any job losses, and as we watched those numbers grow every day, our hearts broke seeing other broadcasters being cut. We never stopped going to the studio, so the days haven’t changed much, minus the promotions and live shows. I’m on-air from 5-10am and recently picked up programming duties, so I’m trying to learn everything I can when I get off the air each day. There are a lot of meetings, and days are long right now, but that’ll get better – right?! As a cluster, we took $20,000 of our promotional money and bought $100 gift cards from local businesses to give away on-air. It was such a win for us, because we supported our local economy and were able to give listeners something they needed. My cohost has been using TikTok live for everything, and we have an audience of thousands of people we’d have never reached otherwise.

My dad is high-risk, so for weeks, I couldn’t see my parents; I normally would see them daily. I’m not married and don’t have children, so I guess that makes it easier. I don’t like to brag, but I spend most nights in bed watching Murder, She Wrote on Peacock. I didn’t pick the gangster life, the gangster life picked me. I do have a roommate who works here at the same cluster on a different station. She does mornings, too, but we never see each other, so we haven’t gotten on each other’s nerves, although I’m not a fan of the way the house smells after she cooks cabbage. I’m pretty sure hell will smell like cabbage cooking, so make sure you’re right with the Lord, people. You don’t want that for eternity. I just moved offices at work, and it’s “my mama would be so ashamed” Carrie Underwood singing kind of messy. I keep saying it’s getting better, but I think it’s because I have Milk Duds in my desk drawer now. That seems to make everything okay. My newest hobby may fall under the TMI category – I have started shaving my face. I read some stuff online about dermaplaning, and my Mississippi mind thought, “Well, that’s just shaving, Traci. Go get you a Bic and get to it!” So now that I’ve started, I can never stop, unless I want to work for a carnival. I finally read Where The Crawdads Sing, and I also watched Tiger King. It’s all about balance. I love Craig Groeschel’s leadership podcast, too. I’ve

been listening and judging former bosses. Just kidding! Kinda... I’m a chip person. Oh, and cookies. And cakes and hot dogs and wings. The occasional pizza and fried chicken, too. Y’all Tales Can’t forget the mac and cheese. And tacos! Atkin’s shakes are good, too ... #Balance This has been an exercise in perspective for me. I struggled at the beginning, and I cried a lot. I prayed, journaled and read my Bible, and I thought about things I never thought I would as an adult. But even in the darkest days, the sun would shine, and the humidity would be down, and I would have enough hope to make it another day. Facing the unknown on a global level makes you realize how small you really are, and being a person of faith, it made me realize how much I was loved when I didn’t have to be. I almost feel rescued and grateful to have gone through it. I’m thankful for where it’s brought me, and I’m excited to see what’s next. Share your favorite motivational verse with Lee here.
