Career Change? Buy A Station
As the old adage goes, you don’t truly have a career in radio until you’ve been fired or hired away by the competition. Ongoing corporate cutbacks, furloughs, layoffs and restructuring have many programmers and personalities facing yet another move or even having to work in a different industry. But what if there were another option? Bennett Radio Group Owner/Operator Stan Bennett and Hill Broadcasting Owner/Operator Danny Hill tell Country Aircheck how they Stan Bennett went from working for others to working for themselves by purchasing their own stations. Sell My Vessel: Bennett, who left his post as Binnie Media VP/Programming in July after 25 years with the company (CAT 6/23), purchased a cluster in Mexico, ME – including Country WOXO – that had been silenced in March (CAT 3/25) following previous owner Dick Gleason’s death. His mid-pandemic Danny Hill acquisition included five stations and four translators for $300,000 (CAT 7/15) and drew questions from friends, including, “Are you nuts?” “Owning my own station is something I’ve wanted to do since day one, though,” says Bennett. “One of my stations, WIGY, is one I grew up listening to and where I worked when I first started my career, so I had been looking at trying to buy Gleason Media for a few years, but they weren’t ready to sell.” Following Mr. Gleason’s passing, his widow Kathy decided to shut down the stations, and a broker called Bennett with an offer to purchase immediately. Hill’s path to ownership was a bit more of a zigzag, weaving through on-air, programming and sales experiences in Kansas, California and Hawaii. Two years ago, following his mother’s passing, he set out to fulfill his final promise to her. “She had a $50,000 life insurance policy, and I (continued on page 7)

Since closing its doors to the public in March, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum has suffered a revenue loss eclipsing $30 million. But, when one door closes, another door — or exhibit case — opens. Like most museums, the CMHoF has historically enforced a strict hands-off policy for its exhibits. Despite the devastating blow the pandemic has delivered, it also created a unique and (hopefully) once-ina-lifetime set of circumstances for treasured instruments to be safely removed from climate-controlled cases and played once again. Instruments and artists were paired according to emotional and artistic connections, and performances were filmed during the Museum’s six-month closure. The result was Big Night (At The Museum), a free digital fundraiser that has already raised more than $743,000 for the non-profit’s

WITH A day in the socially-distanced lives of Restless Road’s Zach Beeken, Colton Pack and Garrett Nichols: GN: The pandemic has made connecting with people a lot harder. My daily life still includes songwriting and making music with the band, and tech like Zoom allows us to meet with co-writers virtually and have meetings with our team remotely. CP: I’ve had more time to spend with my wife and kids, which has been great! ZB: The biggest change has been … how much money I’m spending on UberEats! CP: My routine is pretty much the same everyday: wake up, make coffee and breakfast and spend time with my family before I write songs. ZB: I’ve always enjoyed being spontaneous, so I’ve never lived my life with too much routine. But, I try to be as productive as possible and have fun while doing it. GN: Zach and I have lived together ever since I joined the band in 2015. If we were going to drive each other crazy, it would have already happened! CP: I just moved my family down to Nashville in September, so it’s been an adjustment for my wife and two daughters. We watch a ton of movies, so that’s one thing that keeps us from driving each other crazy. Our kids still do a pretty good job of doing that!
Coronavirus Relief Fund. The Countdown To Big Night (At The Museum) was hosted by Tenille Townes and Carly Pearce, who paid tribute to Dolly Parton and The Judds live from the CMA Theater. “A love of country music brings us together tonight,” began Townes in a thread of sentiment that wove throughout the night.
ZB: We’ve been trying to hit the gym as hard as possible so we can keep up with Kane Brown when we hit the road with him again! GN: We’ve also picked up playing disc golf during quarantine. We played with Mitchell Tenpenny recently, and he’s really good! ZB: My creative levels have been up and down, but that’s no different than any other time in life. Creativity has a mind of its own, and you have to be willing and able when it shows up. GN: Quarantine gave us time to slow down and focus on our songwriting. I truly believe we’ve written some of our best songs over the last few months, and I can’t wait for fans to hear what we’ve been working on. CP: I’ve been bingeing all of the Harry Potter movies. ZB: Netflix adding the Top 10 feature is the best thing that has ever happened. CP: We’ve loved finding new ways to connect with fans. We got a band phone number to text directly with fans and started a TikTok. We’ve been able to show our personality through TikTok, and it’s been amazing to see how fast we’ve grown a fan base on the app. GN: The ability to go live has been an incredible tool to stay connected with our fans. It’s cool getting to talk and interact with people all over the world, giving them a chance to hear us sing!

... RESTLESS ROAD
ZB: I have consumed more queso than I care to admit … and that’s all I’m saying. CP: My go-to snack is pepperoni, cheese and pickles. I know it’s a weird combination, but my wife and I eat them almost every night. I Expected The Rocky ZB: I’m Mountains To Be A Little confident we’ll find more silver Rockier: The trio cover linings as time John Denver. goes on, but so far, I’m grateful for the extra time I’ve spent with my family, as well as the time we’ve had as a band to grow creatively. GN: One positive has been getting to slow down and focus on creative outlets and hobbies. Being able to spend time with family and loved ones has been really nice, as well.
Backlit by the Nashville skyline, Brad Paisley and Dan Tyminski opened the main event playing Don Rich’s 1964 Fender Telecaster and Buck Owens’ red, white and blue American acoustic guitar, respectively, on Owens’ instrumental “Buckaroo.” Armed with John Prine’s David Russell Young custom-made guitar, Miranda Lambert

sang Prine’s “That’s The Way The World Goes ‘Round.” “I don’t want to wash my hands,” admitted Lambert, describing the act of holding the guitar as “magical.” Tim McGraw recalled introducing himself to Miranda Lambert Keith Whitley at a show in Jacksonville, FL, “I’m a country singer, and I’m going to move to Nashville someday,” to which Whitley replied, “Well, son, good luck to you. I hope I run into you up there.” Cut to a few years later, McGraw arrived in Nashville May 9, 1989 ... the day Whitley died. Calling the experience “eye-opening,” McGraw realized, “There’s a lot of bright lights, fun, music, art, entertainment ... but behind all of that, there’s a lot of pain, too.” Holding onto Whitley’s C.W. Parsons acoustic guitar, McGraw glanced back at photo of the late singer/ songwriter with the words “Potential Fulfilled” across it, saying “I don’t know … I’d like to have heard a lot more” before performing “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” In a tribute to Patsy Cline, Tim McGraw Reba McEntire took center stage with “Sweet Dreams,” a song she covered and released in 1979. McEntire’s connection to the track runs deep, with it not only being her first Top 20 hit, but the last she sang onstage the night of the 1991 plane crash that killed seven of her band members. In a full circle moment, Randy Travis fan Kane Brown held the Hall of Famer’s Gibson J-185KOA guitar with a photo of someone Travis was a fan of, George Jones, taped to the back. “I love you Randy,” said Brown. “You’re the guy.” Brown was accompanied by Alex Anthony for his offering of Travis’ “Three Wooden Crosses.” “Wow … is it weird to smell it?” asked Ashley McBryde in a lighthearted moment before carefully placing Loretta Lynn’s 1956 Gibson J-50 guitar around her neck and singing “You’re Lookin’ At Country.” Additional highlights included Keb’ Mo’ performing “Loving Arms” while playing Jimmie Rodgers’ 1928 custom Weymann guitar; Rodney Crowell and Emmylou Harris’ “Love Hurts” duet;

Congratulations to Matt Stell, Steve Hodges, Josh Easler, Lauren Thomas and the Arista promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Everywhere But On.” The song is the second single and title track from Stell’s 2019 EP. Songwriters are Lance Miller, Paul Sikes and Stell. Matt Stell And kudos to RJ Meacham and the Curb crew on notching 43 adds for Lee Brice’s “Memory I Don’t Mess With,” landing atop this week’s board.
Facing The Election Music ... Or Not
With just one day before the election and more than 94 million ballots already cast, Country Aircheck asked programmers about encouraging voter registration and turnout, and how they plan to cover election results. Entercom VP/Country Format Captain & Country WYCD/Detroit PD Tim Roberts: “Entercom Country has been promoting voting and helping voters understand where and when to vote in every state for the past several months. Additionally, we have the advantage of using Entercom scale as the leading NewsTalk Radio company and will be using reports Tim Roberts around the clock from our sister stations across our platforms.” Cox/Tampa OM & Country WQYK PD/afternoons Travis Daily: “We don’t get in the weeds or too deep into politics, but we have been saying ‘make sure you vote, and then we all need to come together and support whoever wins.’ We have also been

running artist-voiced imaging pieces that say, ‘Be heard on Nov. 3.’ Our morning show will handle sharing results the following day.” Hubbard/West Palm Beach OM & Country WIRK PD Bruce Logan: “We have taken a decidedly hands-off approach to this year’s election, because we feel people come to us looking for a break from this type of news Travis Daily and information. There’s only one Country station in West Palm Beach, so we plan to own that hill and let our News-Talk sister WFTL-AM handle election coverage.” Summit/Wichita, KS OM & Country KFDI PD Justin Case: “Our number one concern is not adding to the polarization of the election. National results could take a while, and we need to remind people of the process Bruce Logan while projecting calm and staying fact-based. We are avoiding terms like ‘crisis’ and urging our staff to slow down and not react to every story.” Summit/Springfield, MO OM & Country KTTS PD Tom Oakes: “We will have updates every 30 minutes beginning at 7pm CT, as we have a number of local and state races to cover in addition to the Presidential race. Our news department will handle all live updates in addition to our regularly scheduled newscasts throughout the day. We will also have reporters covering the two parties at their election headquarters here in Springfield.” WPAW/Greensboro, NC PD/afternoons Clay “JD” Walker: “Along with our Entercom sister stations nationwide, we have been encouraging folks to vote, but other than that, 93.1 The Wolf has

been nothing other than an oasis of positivity and a break from all the drama llamas.” KUZZ/Bakersfield PD/middays Brent Michaels: “We have a full-time news department that has been covering the national and local races for the last few months. We’ll be doing updates every hour tomorrow after the polls close to keep our audience up-to-date.” Clay “JD” Walker WKSJ/Mobile, AL PD/afternoons Bill Black: “We make it a point not to take sides in elections, and I make sure the staff goes out of their way to remain neutral in local, state and federal elections. We always remind listeners to get out and vote – we’ve done that for years – but due to the intensity of this year’s race and listeners’ desire to know the outcome, ‘KSJ will air election night updates twice per hour Brent Michaels via our partnership with NBC News 24/7.” KRYS/Corpus Christi PD/mornings “Big Frank” Edwards: “In Texas, we had 18 days to early vote, and I would mention that a few times each morning. As we have for many years, on election night, we will use hourly updates via our News-Talk sister station to cover local, state and federal results. It’s a fired-up election year, for sure ... and the signs Big Frank may come down and ads may come off the airwaves, but the passionate feelings won’t soon just go away.” WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD/mornings Nikki Thomas: “We’ve been running sweeps and encouraging people to get out

and vote in addition to providing ongoing coverage about the election, and we’ve pushed early voting as a means of controlling COVID-19 exposure. Our sister station lost a host who is running unopposed for the Tennessee House of Representatives, which is yet another reason for us to remain as neutral as possible.” WUSJ/Jackson, MS PD/mornings Traci Lee: “We are talking about our responsibility to vote, because we have several local and state issues on the ballot – including legalizing marijuana and changing the state flag. We are encouraging people to look over the sample ballot before they get to the polls, but we are staying as far away from the Presidential election as we can.” –Monta Vaden & Caitlin DeForest

(continued from page 1) promised her I would invest it in a home or business,” explains Hill. “When we couldn’t find a house in the Bakersfield area, my wife asked how much a radio station would be; I laughed and said, ‘millions of dollars.’ But after researching I knew I could buy a station in the $300,000 range if I were able to do $10,000 down and get a 10-year term with monthly payments of approximately $2,000.” One afternoon, Hill was feeling especially emotional after hearing Cole Swindell’s “You Should Be Here” on the drive home and hit scan. When the radio stopped, he had landed on what he thought was a pirate radio station – one he had never heard before. On a whim, he made contact with the owner and asked if he would be willing to sell. After some negotiation and explaining to the owner that this would change his life, the deal was done, and Hill picked up what is now Sign On: Bennett finalizes Classic Hits KRWI/Bakersfield his purchase for $250,000 – $10,000 down and $1,600 per month with the former owner carrying the note. If You Build It, They Will Cume: Both Bennett and Hill were tasked with rebuilding their stations in one form or another. Bennett set out to renovate studio space, install and upgrade equipment and purchase backup generators. “These stations had not been updated for decades, so securing [former Binnie Country WTHT/ Portland, ME engineer] Bob Perry to help me upgrade the studios and backup systems was a priority,” he says. Bennett, along with help from his wife and Perry, was able to get WOXO back on-air within weeks, and he just recently signed on Hot AC WIGY. “I can’t do huge promotions and be a reporter with these stations, so we went a different direction, and I’m playing four decades of hits on each of my stations,” notes Bennett. “If mistakes are made, those are my decisions now, and I’m the one who will deal with the consequences, but I’m also the one who built this – literally – with my own two hands. And that feels good.” Hill also had upgrades to do, including replacing the tower antenna, which had frozen over, broken off and was dangling by the coax cable. “The former owner, Steve, is a fantastic engineer

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Emmis WLHK/ Indianapolis PD/midday personality Ryan Wild: I haven’t had this much face time with my family in as long as I can remember, but I also miss seeing all my friends and coworkers I previously saw every day. I’ve gone from having a view of Monument Circle out my window, to no view at all as I work based out of a closet in my guest room. Even though the staff is working remotely, this team gets things done! I was finally able to unbox equipment that had followed me from move to move, so I have everything I need here in my closet – except that view. I might have to buy a picture and fake it. We live on Zoom now, and when I get to take a break during the day, I get to see my wife and kids instead of having to call them, so that has been a major plus. Sometimes I can get into a rut here and there, because I vibe off of people. Not having that energy to spark creativity from others can sometimes slow me down. But, as far as programming and promotions, Hank FM is charging forward and finding ways to fit what we need to get done into the current environment. I think we have been doing some of our most creative work
during this time. We have stayed connected to the audience by reminding them we are all going through this together. I’ve also tried to stay connected to the people in my personal orbit and have been more thoughtful and intentional with my communication, including asking how everyone’s mental health is during this time. I’ve finished up some projects around the house I had previously put off and found a few new and creative ways to put off doing others. Does that count as a hobby? When this is all over, I can’t wait to take a real vacation. I’ll probably hit up The Smokies with the family. I have been binge-watching The Boys on Amazon Prime and, as a result, have rediscovered my love of Fresca. You also can’t beat a good plate of nachos. I hope others take this opportunity to remind themselves that we need each other and to put the swords down when talking to one another. I’m reminded of a sermon I heard once about how when we die, our headstone always displays a dash between when we were born and when we died ... and that dash is the most important
and helped me mount the new antenna and get it turned up to where it was supposed to be,” says Hill. “Once we had it up and running, you could hear my signal all over Bakersfield, and we had a fantastic coverage area.” His signal was later bolster by a translator, which was gifted to him by a pastor looking to offload his church’s translator for financial reasons. “He gave it to us free of charge if we promised to take over monthly payments, but I upped the ante and offered to air his church services on both our signals every Sunday as long as he’s preaching there,” Hill explains. “Now, we reach all throughout Central California and cover approximately 1.5 million people with the simulcast on the two signals.” Checks And Balancing Acts: Both men have relied upon their varied career history to handle multiple duties and keep staffing lean. “I have done on-air work, production, promotions and programming during my career, so I’m handling programming, operations and doing mornings on WOXO,” says Bennett. “My wife handles the business and financial duties, and we’ve brought in [comedian] Mark Turcotte for mornings on WIGY.” He also has a staff of four rookie sales executives, led by consultant Dave Dean, and is going out on sales calls of his own, as well. Bennett remarks, “It isn’t something I’ve previously done, but I’m enjoying getting out and sharing information about our stations and talking about being genuinely local.” Hill is also handling sales and says it is easily the most important skill he brought with him from past experiences. “The first day out, I was able to put approximately $110,000 in billing on the books, and my ongoing goal is to close at least one client per week to continue adding to the stable,” he says. He and his wife, Kait, handle mornings – and syndicate their show via Sun Broadcast Group – and other dayparts are handled by former radio pros who

are voicetracking for minimal salary or trade. “I pay my midday guy $250 per month, and afternoons is done by a local restaurant owner who trades out his on-air work for spots,” Hill explains. “Everyone is from the area, so they are local trackers who all previously did radio before launching into other careers.” Hill is also scheduling both commercial and music logs, writing scripts and producing client spots and imaging, all from his home studio. “I was already wearing multiple hats and working all hours of the day and night, but I was doing it for someone else, in their name and for their bottom line,” he says. “Now, I’m doing it all, but I’m doing it all for myself, for my wife, and for our five kids and their futures. And I’m the one pocketing the profit. This is the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done.” Stereo Type: Both Bennett and Hill say they have managed to stay afloat during the pandemic by keeping overhead low – with free and discounted software and trading out for needed equipment – transitioning to new client categories and superserving the local audience. “We are already making enough money to pay the bills, and I’m going to be putting money back into the stations soon, which is money that goes directly back into my community,” says Bennett. “And I get to play radio for the rest of my life without worrying about someone else ending my career. I would recommend ownership to anyone who may be considering it.” Hill agrees, and says he credits his success to a combination of luck and hard work. “I celebrated my two-year anniversary of doing this full-time on Halloween, and I think if anyone is humble and ready to work hard and learn, they can do it, too,” he says. If you have questions about ownership or would like to talk more in-depth about their career paths, contact Bennett here and Hill here. –Monta Vaden CAC
