Additions to New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash include Brothers Osborne with Trombone Shorty, Lainey Wilson with Grace Bowers and Jackson Dean, and Blake Shelton with Trace Adkins. SiriusXM’s Cody Alan and CBS anchor Lonnie Quinn will report from New York City’s Times Square, along with Dustin Lynch, who will also be performing. PCCA Sets ’24 Date

The People’s Choice Country Awards will return for its second year on NBC and Peacock Sept. 26. A partnership with Opry Entertainment Group, the show will once again air live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House from 7-9pm CT.

Audacy WUSN/Chicago’s Scotty Kay connected budget-conscious listener Jillian with local musician Johnny Riv to create a custom song for her husband as a holiday gift. Country Radio Hall of Famer Joe Hoppel passed Dec. 26. He was 89. Hoppel started as the morning host at WCMS-AM/Norfolk in 1955, shortly after it became one of the nation’s first full-time Country stations. He was also PD for the station and its FM successor from 1959

December 28, 2023 to 1979, and remained in mornings until 2003 when the stations flipped out of the format. Hoppel was inducted into the Country Radio Hall of Fame in 2002, and also authored the memoir “People I’ve Met, Things I’ve Done.” No word yet on services; local coverage here. Veteran broadcaster Kelly Thompson passed away Christmas Day after a three-year battle with leukemia. Thompson spent almost his entire career in his home state of Louisiana, most recently managing stations in Ferriday and Vidalia for Big River Broadcasting. His Kelly Thompson previous stops included KLAA/Alexandria and a 10year run as MD at KXKC/Lafayette starting in 1990. No word on services. Singer/musician Laura Lynch was killed in a car accident in El Paso Dec. 22. She was 65. Lynch was a founding member of the then-Dixie Chicks in 1989, playing upright bass. She took over lead vocalist duties in 1992 before departing the group in 1995 prior to Laura Lynch their major label signing. Soon after, she left the music business altogether. No word on services.

Radio’s Opportunity Lost?

As a college senior and intern for Country Aircheck this fall, I’ve found some interesting connections in the conversations around localism, talent development and community engagement. My experience may not be unique – and might add some perspective for those in the industry charged with finding the next generation of talent. I’ve wanted to be in radio since I started college, and have been reading Country Aircheck since I was in high school. (Weird, I know.) Finding a footing was a challenge, however. My journey started as an intern with Townsquare’s Utica, NY cluster, which Gideon Dean was invaluable but also a logistical struggle being a 90-minute commute each way. For more perspective, I got in contact with the local media company in my college’s town to see if they had opportunities for interns, part-time workers, or even just volunteer creatives. As the only broadcasting business in our city, the cluster houses eight brands under one roof – including Country. After months of dead-ends via email and phone, I stopped by in-person and was informed they are not taking on employees or interns of any kind, despite (or maybe because of) having one person running the entirety of their content and operations in the building. Do college students in other parts of the country have to travel to find opportunity in broadcasting? Is there a missing link between localism the audience hears, community involvement it sees and having a connection point for area aspirants to begin a career? If the format isn’t accessible to its future

voices, how will those voices find their way in and develop professionally? Former WFRG/Utica, NY morning host Carl Neff, someone I had the privilege of working with during my internship there, says radio would do well to remain accessible to young people of all ages. “Stop the idea that young kids don’t care about radio, because they do,” he says. “Kids listen on their bus or in the car on the way to school. Alienating that listenership or pretending it doesn’t exist is just going to hurt you in the long run.” Neff’s recent departure brought word that multiple students in a local elementary school were upset that he was no longer on the air. Student-run WONY/Oneonta, NY GM Irene Flanagan – a colleague with whom I’ve served as PD and Dir./Communications – has drawn on the oft-cited maxim of localism in her role. “We’ve definitely lost a lot of connections coming back from the pandemic,” she says. “So focusing our attention on supporting our community with news, events or just a cheerful ‘good morning’ each day will hopefully create a big impact.” Fortunately, WONY and other campus stations are constructed around creating opportunity. In most other broadcast operations, the focus is, understandably perhaps, elsewhere. For people like me, local radio stations are a hopeful radio talent’s first in, and yet the opportunities seem to be dwindling in what might be another unintended consequence of regionalized and nationalized programming. Country WDSD/Dover night personality & Classic Rock WZZO/Allentown midday host Joel Shimer suggests broadcasters “establish clear career pathways. This might involve creating entry-level positions or internships specifically designed for recent graduates, accompanied by training programs that bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical on-air skills.” To that, this humble intern might add coordination between broadcasters and college communications departments regarding where those positions can be found. Perhaps my location in upstate New York and desire to learn in a Country station were just a bad fit. But if those issues exist elsewhere, they could be a roadblock that turns a future contributor to the format toward a different career. Warner Chappell Music has signed Sam Backoff, a former member of The Valory Music Co. country trio Avenue Beat, to a global songwriting deal, in partnership with Underscore Works’ Charly Salvatore. Warner Music Nashville’s Dan + Shay have joined Spotify’s “Billions Club” after their 2019 duet with Justin Bieber, “10,000 Hours,” achieved one billion streams on the DSP earlier this month. Jennifer Nettles returns as host for the second season of the Fox reality dating show Farmer Wants A Wife, debuting Feb. 1. Watch the trailer here. Nettles also won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Original Song Dec. 16 for co-writing (with Bill Sherman) “Life is Sweet” for the PBS series American Anthems. Bri Bagwell will perform two sets on NBC’s Lone Star NYE 2024, airing live from Dallas in more than 37 markets across 13 states, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Austin and Little Rock Dec. 31. Country artist Billie Jo Jones has signed a recording and publishing contract with Dallas-based Get Joe Entertainment, LLC.
