Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, Trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs Subscriptions Due It’s that time of year again, time to renew your subscription. It’s easy to do, just go online to Clubhub and it can all be done from the comfort of your chair, or anywhere else.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Membership Cards When you join or renew your membership you will be sent out a membership card for the season. These cards are printed for us and to keep costs down membership cards are sent out to be printed in batches. This means that it may take several weeks for your card to come through to you. If you need your membership card for a competition or to access other game fishing clubs do not leave it until the week before you need it to renew your membership as you won’t have a membership card when you need it. Why not just renew now and make sure you have your card in time for when you need it.
Weigh Shed Most of you will probably have seen the new artwork that we had put on the weigh shed at Te Toro. Sadly we have to report that it was tagged. This is very dissapointing, but it has now been put right and we are trying to arrange a protective coating to help avoid this in the future.
Counties Classic 2020 Please note that the dates for this competition are the 7th, 8th and 9th of February 2020.

Scallop Season’s Here
As I’m sure most of you are aware scallop season opened at the start of this month, and as you can see from these photos some of our members have already been out making the most of this. Condition is reported as pretty good for the time of year. If you are travelling do remember that there is currently a complete ban on taking scallops from the Kaipara harbour in place. Tagging Marlin Just a reminder to anyone planning to tag a marlin during the season. Do remember to fill in and submit your tag card and please make sure you check that you fill in the right card for the tag you are using. Last season there were three tagged marlin caught for which the tag card had not been handed in.
With all the people out dragging for scallops in the harbour it’s a great time to be targetting travally. Here’s a nice specimin caught by Gerald Muir, on a quite Monday morning after everyone had been out on the Sunday stirring up plenty of free berley.

International Award for local Rescue We would like to add our congratulations to our local rescue services. As you may have heard they have recently been awarded a prestigious international award for a rescue on the Port Waikato bar. At a ceremony in London they were awarded runner-up in the Outstanding Team Contribution to Maritime Search and Rescue Operations and won the Peoples Choice award. We are extremely lucky to have such an amazing group of professionals looking after us out on the water.
Coastguard New Zealand, Surf Life Saving Kariotahi, New Zealand Police, Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter - multi-agency rescue at Port Waikato River Bar, North Island, New Zealand. In May this year, a man, woman and child were in a small boat at the entrance to the Waikato River, when, at about 17h30, the boat stalled and flipped, tossing them into the freezing water. They managed to call the police and a large multi-agency search and rescue operation began, co-ordinated by the Coastguard Northern Operations Centre. Three Coastguard rescue vessels were dispatched from Waiuku and Papakura, together with shore-based search teams from the police, the Auckland rescue helicopter, a police helicopter with thermal imaging equipment and a Surf Life Saving inflatable rescue boat (IRB). There was almost no wind. The sea was flat, but waves breaking on the bar at the entrance to the river were huge, creating a lot of sea spray and hampering visibility for the rescuers. It was a very dark night, with no moon and the sand on the nearby beach was black. The Police Eagle helicopter located the three people in the water – barely alive - with infrared heat-detection equipment. The Auckland Rescue Helicopter positioned overhead for a winch operation, but lack of visual reference and sea spray meant the operation was abandoned. It was not safe for rescue boats to cross the bar, so the IRB searched using the rescue helicopter’s landing light, while Police vehicles parked on the beach and used their headlights to help visibility in 1.5 to 2m breaking waves. In just four minutes the patients were found, taken onboard and returned to shore. The rescue helicopter landed to medivac the patients. The woman and child were critically hypothermic, with the woman suffering cardiac arrest several times on the way to hospital. The man was cold but not critical, taken to hospital for monitoring. The rescue involved intense teamwork across all organisations involved and thanks to their skill and dedication, all three casualties were safely rescued and made a full recovery.

2019 AGM There was a good turn out for the AGM this year. As you know Smudge was standing down as president after doing a great job over the last few years, but he is remaining on the committee. Matthew Douglas was elected as the new president, and as that left the role of vice president vacant we elected Clint Hunt as the new vice president. The rest of the committee was mostly unchanged from last year, with Shane Johnston replacing Nils McGee who stood down this year. We also have several new weighmasters, which is great news for anyone trying to get a fish weighed. Their details will be added to the weighmaster section once Steve has completed some training with them.

Club Logo
We have had our current club logo for a very long time, and we would like to update it with a new one. We are hoping that somewhere amongst our members there may be someone who could come up with a new logo for us. If someone comes up with a logo that we use there will be a prize, we are not quite sure what it will be yet –but it will definitely be worthwhile. The logo needs to represent the club, so think about the fish we target, being based on the West Coast, trailer boat game fishing, and anything else you think represents Counties. For it to work as a logo it needs to be relatively simple, otherwise we won’t be able to embroider it onto garments –so no photographs. Apart from that you can do pretty well anything you like.
We will accept entries in just about any format, the absolute ideal would be a vector based computer graphic file. But don’t be put of having a go even if all you have is a bit of paper and a pencil –we can get it put onto computer quite easily. Important Copyright Notice The logo obviously needs to be your own work, and must not make use of any image that may be subject to copyright.

What’s on at the Cossie As well as hosting our club meetings there is lots of other great stuff going on at Waiuku Cossie Club. The restaurant is open lunchtime and evenings, with some great specials. Like the famous Rib and Steak nights on Tuesday and Wednesday with your choice of ribs or steak for only $25, families welcome.

Committee As well as the usual club business most of this months meeting was taken up with final arrangements for our annual prizegiving, which was again a great success -huge thanks to everyone involved. Also this month we welcome new member Shane Johnston to the committee and say goodbye to Nils McGee, who we would like to thank for his service to the club on the committee over several years. LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
