Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Counties “Biff ya Shit Out” Surfcasting Competition After a great comp last year this competition is back again, but with a brand new format. Instead of just one days fishing the competition will run from the 4th of November right up to the 26th of November. This should give everyone a chance to get out and fish the competition at some time. You can fish as many, or as few, days as you like. This will be a length based competition, so entries will be by submitting photos of your catch on an approved measuring mat. The prizegiving will be held at our November club meeting on the 29th November.

Counties/Clevedon Interclub This competition is held every year between Counties and Clevedon game fishing clubs. It is held over two days (Saturday and Sunday) with the weigh in on Sunday afternoon. Each year the clubs take it in turns to host the event, this year we are hosting and it will be at the green shed. The host club lays on food, and there is always a good spread on offer. Teams score points for the heaviest three fish in 6 categories; Snapper, John Dory, Kahawai, Kingfish, Gurnard and Trevally. Three points for heaviest, two points for second and one point for third. The points are totalled and the winning team decided. Historically we have done well in this competition, but for the last couple of years Clevedon have scored pretty decisive wins over us. We would really like to beat them this year, so if you can please think about taking part in the competition. Another great thing about this competition is that we arrange a special licence to allow us to donate all the fish weighed in to a local charity, grandparents raising grandkids. This charity, as the name suggests, supports grandparents who are raising their grandkids because the kids parents are unable to do so. With the price of fresh fish in the shops this gives many of them a treat that the can’t often afford.

NZSFC News Here are some highlights from this months NZSFC club report. ACT NOW FOR THE HAURAKI GULF MARINE PARK! There are two crucial matters unfolding in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park that demand your attention: 1. The Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Bill - Deadline: November 1. This bill is currently before parliament and aims to introduce 19 new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. While well-intentioned, it won't effectively tackle issues like over-harvesting and destructive fishing techniques. 2. Trawl Corridor Consultation - Deadline: November 6. Another process concerns trawl corridors within the Marine Park. The proposed options do not go far enough in protecting our marine environment. Your action is vital. Here's how you can help: 1. **For the Marine Protection Bill:** Public submissions are open. While bureaucrats may downplay their significance, we can still make powerful submissions. 2. **For Trawl Corridors:** We're advocating for Option Zero - 0% trawling in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. We need mass public opposition to make a difference. Make your submission here in less than a minute.

NZSFC AGM 2023 The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council (NZSFC) 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on September 22nd and 23rd at the Tairua-Pauanui Sport Fishing Club in Tairua. NZSFC’s AGM is a democratic gathering that brings together delegates from 53 affiliated clubs, representing a collective membership of 36,000 individuals from across the country. During this event, the delegates engaged in meaningful discussions on various crucial topics that shape the NZSFC's trajectory. In addition to the formalities, these discussions included updates on initiatives such as the: ● Nationals ● Youth Nationals ● Weighmasters - handbook and training ● Sustainability of Clubs ● NZ Coastguard ● CRM for clubs (Sporty) ● Youth Ocean Trust ● Fisheries management: Ahu Moana, RMA matters, Kaitiaki, Annual reports,Commercial Kina harvesting ● LegaSea initiatives, and much more. This democratic process allowed delegates to raise important questions, exchange insights, and provide feedback to their respective clubs regarding the ongoing work streams within the NZSFC. The AGM serves as a platform where decisions are made through remits, motions and voting, enabling NZSFC as a Council of Clubs to steer its own course in a manner that reflects the collective will of its membership. In addition to NZSFC’s updates on the initiatives listed above, distinguished guest speakers, including Scott Simpson (Member of Parliament for Coromandel and National party spokesperson Ocean and Fisheries), Callum Gillespe (NZ Coastguard CEO), Todd Herbert (commercial kina gathering), Peter Kara (Water Safety NZ and NZ Coastguard) and Rowan Ashton (NZSFC Fisheries legal representation), enriched the event by sharing valuable insights, particularly regarding the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. Their contributions added depth and perspective to the discussions held during the AGM.
