Next Meeting Wednesday 27th November At Waiuku Cossie Club Meeting starts 7.30pm This our last meeing of the year, so come along and catch up with everyone before Christmas. We need a good turn out as we need to vote on a change to our constitution -just a wording change to keep up to date with current rules. You do not need to be a Cossie Club member to attend. All CSFC members and guests welcome. Why not come early and take advantage of the great food.

Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs IMPORTANT NOTE : Membership Cards When you join or renew your membership you will be sent out a membership card for the season. These cards are printed for us and to keep costs down membership cards are sent out to be printed in batches. This means that it may take several weeks for your card to come through to you. If you need your membership card for a competition or to access other game fishing clubs do not leave it until the week before you need it to renew your membership as you won’t have a membership card when you need it. Why not just renew now and make sure you have your card in time for when you need it.

During his recent trip to Raro Clinton came across this fishing boat, which had got itself well and truly stuck on a reef. Initial efforts with diggers failed to release it, and a large tug was brought in to try and tow it off. But it was all to no avail and we understand it was eventually cut up for scrap on the reef.

From November 2019 SeaLink NZ ferries will be operating from the eastern edge of Westhaven Marina.

As well as finding washed up fishing boats while in Raro Clinton also caught this nice mahi mahi. Seems to be the place to go for them at this time of year judging by the pics we’ve seen over the last couple of months.
Leah Scott with a couple of nice snapper caught surf-casting. The largest was a very respectable 5.94 kg. And a great snapper from Ann Rattrie.

Counties Clevedon Inter-club Competition 2nd and 3rd November It’s that time of year again, when we do battle with Clevedon to see who gets the inter-club trophy this year. We have always done well in this competition, but as you can see from last years results below it was a close run thing. A single fish could have swung the result either way, and we could really do with some good gurnard or kahawai fishers this year as we didn’t do very well with those last year. This is a real fun competition and there is a great prize-giving at the end of the competition, this year Clevedon will be hosting that.

Club Logo
We have had our current club logo for a very long time, and we would like to update it with a new one. We are hoping that somewhere amongst our members there may be someone who could come up with a new logo for us. If someone comes up with a logo that we use there will be a prize, we are not quite sure what it will be yet –but it will definitely be worthwhile. The logo needs to represent the club, so think about the fish we target, being based on the West Coast, trailer boat game fishing, and anything else you think represents Counties. For it to work as a logo it needs to be relatively simple, otherwise we won’t be able to embroider it onto garments –so no photographs. Apart from that you can do pretty well anything you like.
We will accept entries in just about any format, the absolute ideal would be a vector based computer graphic file. But don’t be put of having a go even if all you have is a bit of paper and a pencil –we can get it put onto computer quite easily. Important Copyright Notice The logo obviously needs to be your own work, and must not make use of any image that may be subject to copyright.

The Price of Protection Fishing on the west coast is not for the faint-hearted and future prospects are about to change for many people. There are some disturbing aspects to the recent joint proposal by Sanford, Moana fisheries and WWF-New Zealand to protect Maui dolphin on the west coast of the North Island. We all agree on the need to protect our taonga, our endangered Maui. Our concern is based on the proposal’s small print in which Sanford and Moana will agree to amended set net rules between New Plymouth and Cape Egmont “but only if the Government releases snapper 8 quota”. So, the price we are collectively being asked to pay for protecting endangered marine mammals on a 25-mile stretch of coast is to give away more snapper catching rights for the whole west coast, from North Cape to Wellington, in perpetuity. How can that be right? For Sanford that could be a handout in the millions. A pretty handy return when the real cost of change falls squarely onto the small-scale fishermen who would be banned from fishing their local waters. Once these enterprises are gone there will be few barriers to stop the corporates mopping up the leftover catching rights on the west coast. It is a matter of public interest that Sanford already own 60% of the west coast snapper quota. They will also be one of the first to benefit from any quota increase. Early estimates show Sanford could easily end up holding 75% of all snapper quota rights on the west coast. It is hard to see why Moana would support such aggregation of quota, unless there is more on offer than what is visible. The real quandary is the loss of fishing livelihoods. When this issue was last considered in 2012 officials advised around eight commercial set net vessels had operated in the New Plymouth to Cape Egmont area in the previous three years. In our recent submission we talked a lot about the small-scale fleet as they play an important role in our communities, and these individuals form a highly valued profession. We emphasised the need to treat these people with respect when area closure decisions were being considered. A compensation package and transitional support must be provided if these small time operators eventually lose their livelihood. Conversely, no compensation would be due to quota holders such as Sanford and Moana because they can easily continue to fish outside of the proposed closure areas, or transfer catch to someone who can fish it. From our perspective it’s a dying shame that dolphins and peoples’ livelihoods are being used as currency for the ultimate prize for commercial investors – more snapper quota and fewer smaller operators.

Committee We are pleased to report that the weigh shed has now been treated with an anti grafiti coating, and that we managed to get it done without any cost to the club. Our NZFC reps were down in Wellington recently to represent our club at the annual conference. One thing that they have come back with was news of some changes we need to make to our constitution to keep it up to date with current legislation regarding our not for profit status. We will need to vote these changes through at the next general club meeting, so please come along in November to make sure we have enough members present to do this.
