AGM After many delays we are finally able to hold our AGM, which will be at the big green shed on Wednesday 8th December at 7pm. To comply with the regulations anyone attending must show a covid vaccine certificate and sign in. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing. There will be a sausage sizzle and complimentary beer.

Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

The onsite technicians are experts in Mercury, Etech, Evinrude & Johnson servicing and repairs as well as Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda. Bits & Bobs Covid Competition Casualties Due to the current covid restrictions lasting so long the difficult decision has had to be made to cancel several events. The interclub competition against Cleveland and the surfcasting competition that were postponed have now been cancelled. Next years Fish N Chicks competition has also been cancelled,with many of the regular sponsors having been hit hard by the lock down. On a more positive note the Marlin Money Competition, Nationals and the family competition should all be going ahead as planned (restrictions permitting). The Counties Classic will hopefully be taking place, although probably with some differences to previous years.

Now that we are all able to fish from our boats, beaches and wharves the NZSFC measure champs will start again on the 1st of December 2021. As we have missed three months - the Champs will continue till July 2022. Don't forget there are great prizes each month for both Senior and Junior anglers and the overall Measure Champs Champion at the end of the competition. So get on out there and see what you can catch.

We have QR posters for the big green shed, which will be prominently displayed whenever there are competitions or meetings there. Please use the Covid Tracer app to sign in when you are there.

Tag Cards If you have any game fish tag cards in the boat or at your home please hand them in before the summer game season starts.

Ryan and Brad Thwaites had a good day over the coast fishing on Grumpy , landing some good snapper including these two that weighed 8.72 & 8.61 kg

Fish Heads There is a new group on Facebook, called “Fish heads Waiuku” that has been set up to enable people to share unwanted fish with people who could make use of it. Just search for it on Facebook and join up if you would like to give, or receive, fish heads. Here is some information, from the site: The waters surrounding our town abound with fish of all types and within our community are some very keen fishers who take every opportunity they can to take a feed of fresh fish home for their table . Often they have heads and frames looking for a home where they can be used to their full potential . Just like the Free fish heads website initiated by TV fishing show host Matt Watson , this is a localised version to assist those who have fish heads and frames to give away and to those who can use them to enjoy in an as fresh as possible way .

Here are a few guidelines that we have put in place to make this as simple as possible for all involved . First and most important , this page's function is to give away and receive for free , food quality , safe for human consumption fish heads/frames . There is to be no offer of purchase by money or trade items in exchange for fish . If you have fish frames/heads to give away , start a new posting detailing what you have and how much you have . If you want these heads/frames , comment on the post saying you will message the person and then message them . This will do two things . 1st - It will put you in a first in , first served position . 2nd - It will let the person know that you have contacted them as sometimes messages on FaceBook get sent to another folder . If you have successfully made the transaction to give heads/frames away , please edit your post to say " Gone now " . This will stop people from asking . Please be polite and courteous when dealing with one another , be prompt when you arrange a pickup and remember to practice Covid19 safe practices .

Electric Reels

IGFA International Angling Rules: Section E. Reel NEW RULE – Effective Immediately 2. Power- driven reels are acceptable under the following situation and configuration. a) Reels that have power accessories (e.g., electric drill attachments, motors or other power accessories specifically designed for a reel) that can be physically removed from the reel may be used strictly for the purpose of retrieving a deployed bait or lure at depth all the way to the boat. b) Power accessories may only be used to retrieve a bait or lure completely to the boat and are not permitted for adjusting the position of a bait or lure in the water column. Once a power accessory is attached to the reel, the bait or lure may no longer be legally used to catch a fish and the bait or lure must be retrieved all the way to the boat for manual redeployment before it may be legally used to hook or catch a fish. Power accessories may not be attached to the reel during the deployment of a bait or lure. c) Power accessories must be physically removed from the reel before the act of hooking or fighting a fish. Any fish that strikes a bait or lure being fished with a reel with power accessories still attached- whether or not under electric operation- will not be eligible for record consideration. d) Electric reels that do not have removable electronic components that allow them to be completely manually driven are prohibited.

Ray Saunders A Tribute to Ray Saunders – Legend & Stalwart of the Club By Claire Hull With the sad passing of Ray on behalf of the Counties Sport Fishing Club past and present Committee and members I would like to acknowledge Ray’s tireless efforts, share his love of fishing and a few stories. Ray loved fishing and I’m sure you all remember his big beaming smile. Fishing was his happy place and he didn’t care what time, day or night, what boat, with whom, he just loved to fish, whenever he got the chance he was off out the harbour, down the river, or over the coast. He also travelled to other clubs and fishing waters, Tairua, Hokianga, Whangaroa and Houhora to name a few with many a story and good memories to tell. He loved being involved in the club and the camaraderie that went with it. Ray joined the CSFC club and fully immersed himself. In 1996 he was elected on the committee and in a year or so of joining was holding some key roles, he was in charge of memberships for many year’s and this was no small task in the early days with hundreds of members and a lot of it being manual, he soon got to know many. Another role Ray absolutely loved was being Weighmaster, he would eagerly await the phone calls to weigh fish whether it was at the Tavern, Hoods Landing or Te Toro, it was never a problem he would drive wherever to weigh the fish. Ray was in his element, sharing the fishing stories over a few beers. In 1999 Ray became a CSFC delegate on the NZ Sport Fishing Council, a role he took seriously promoting and being an advocate for Sportfishing, always with the club’s best interest in mind. He held this position for 13 years and it took him and Caroline to clubs all around the country as far south as Dunedin. He was known by many and friendships were formed and gratefully the family have received condolences from many of these clubs and their members. It didn’t matter what the event Ray was around for many of the club’s milestones and achievements. The good old days of the Shark Hunt and Marlin Tuna Classic, boat checks at the Tavern. The Poker Run, Take a Kid fishing, Blind fishing, Fish’n chicks, Family Day, Counties Classic/One Base and Tairua Interclub. The Green Shed, working bees at Hoods Landing and Te Toro ramps and checking the Waikato River Bar markers, the list goes on but he was there to help out with whatever was needed putting in many hours. 9

In 2005 Ray was made a CSFC Life member which was well deserved and he continued to serve on the committee until 2016 when due to health reasons Ray made the tough decision to retire, a big part of his life he didn’t want to let go after 20+ years. The Committee held a special dinner for Ray and presented him with a trophy in “Recognition of a Lifetime of Service to the Club” and there has been no one more deserving of this than Ray. It was a special night shared with his family even his daughter Carrie was home from England. You knew Ray felt honoured and touched by this gesture, it took pride of place in their lounge by the TV and one of my latter visits to see Ray even though he struggled to communicate he pointed at the trophy and gave me a thumbs up with tears in his eyes, so that tells you all how much the club meant to him and how lucky we were to have a guy who cared and contributed so much. On his sad passing the messages coming through echoed the great guy he was… respected member, stalwart, top man, good bugger, icon of the club, great friend, legend of the club, one bloody cool guy! We were close family friends and I was fortunate enough to become one of Ray’s mainstay crew members for a number of years, joining both his sons Craig and Andrew, along with Skyd and Karl. In the earlier years he did many a trip with his past friends Farmer and Stoney, and I am sure Jeanette will be up there now trying to sort them all out. Ray would ring and soon as you said yep you could go fishing he would reply “Bloody excellent” he was like an excited school boy and would be up half the night checking everything was ready, he was always out to catch something big. Piscator was a well known boat in the club, Ray loved to be behind the wheel, many a fish were caught over the years, notably some good sized sharks, yellowfin & marlin. Ray was also a family man, whilst fishing he was always talking about his family and you could tell he was proud of them all and he loved the grandkids. He loved to go fishing but he also loved to go home after a day’s fishing. After all the jobs were done and a few celebratory drinks were had he would say “Right I’m going to head for the hills and go see my wife”. The shark fishing days hold many memories especially the Nationals where we were trying to get the big one. The reel would start to scream off and Ray’s face would light up he’d say “We’re going to get this barstard”. He was a bloody competitive bugger often fishing light tackle to 10

break records and get as many club points as he could. He wanted it to be a fair fight and loved a good scrap with whatever was on the end of the line. We caught some good sized sharks over that time but he was always striving for bigger. The Piscator crew were known to return to land and celebrate a good day’s fishing with a rum and coke or 2 but the 2005 Nationals at Hokianga was different. There was a bottle of rum onboard this trip but woops no coke, a marlin in the boat heading for the weigh station the boys decided to drink it anyway, let’s just say the marlin was weighed, the rum bottle was empty, and it was no longer called the “Piscator crew” it became the “Piscanoe crew”. I got told of a significant trip to the Three Kings fishing on the charter boat Boss Hogg. There was a pack attack with 12 marlin in the gear, leading to a quadruple strike. The game chair was already taken, Ray was on stand up and somehow ended up getting dragged across the cockpit floor on his knees but he succeeded and 3 out of the 4 marlin were tagged with Ray tagging his first marlin on that trip. The stories go on, you’ll all have your own memories to share that will continue Ray’s legacy to live on in the club. Our thoughts are with you Caroline, Craig, Andrew, Carrie and families at this sad time. The club is so appreciative of Ray’s service over the many years, thanks for sharing an amazing man with us. He’ll be out there watching over us all. We hope the “Sweet Memories” rose from the club is a nice reminder of the family hunting fishing man he was and that it helps to keep the memories alive and ease the loss.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
