Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Also on hand will be Navico’s Simrad and Lowrance expert Bronson Arter, who will explain the latest fish finding technology and how to make the best use of it.

Bits & Bobs IMPORTANT NOTE : Membership Cards When you join or renew your membership you will be sent out a membership card for the season. These cards are printed for us and to keep costs down membership cards are sent out to be printed in batches. This means that it may take several weeks for your card to come through to you. If you need your membership card for a competition or to access other game fishing clubs do not leave it until the week before you need it to renew your membership as you won’t have a membership card when you need it. Why not just renew now and make sure you have your card in time for when you need it.

Gary Pearce caught this blue marlin about 3ks off trader Jacks in Rarotonga from the boat Ikurangai. It took him 5 hours to get it in, on 60kg tackle. It was well worth the effort though, as it weighed 271kg.

They have been uploaded in higher resolution then the old pdf versions were emailed out in, so the pictures especially should be better quality. As you probably noticed from the fish on the front cover, there is some great snapper fishing to be had at the moment. Mart Pike caught this at the 60m mark, it was 73cm long and weighed 17.4lb. It was far from the only snapper caught that day.
Boat Check Forms It’s a new fishing season so you need to get a new boat check form submitted. There is one in this newsletter that you can print out and fill in.

Matakawau Boat Ramp Closure The Matakawau Boating Club Inc., in cooperation with the Auckland Council, would like to advise that the widening of the Matakawau Boat Ramp has been scheduled. The works are expected to be carried out late November - early December 2019 and are intended to be competed by the Christmas season. PLEASE NOTE: The boat ramp will be closed off during the works and will be unavailable for launching, retrieving and pedestrian use until completion. Life Jackets Lifejackets have saved countless lives over the years and they are boaties’ number one piece of safety equipment but they have to be maintained to be effective. It is really important that people make sure they have checked their life jackets before they take their boats out, Chair of the Safer Boating Forum and Maritime NZ Deputy Director, Sharyn Forsyth, said. “Once you’re in the water it is too late.” That’s the message from Maritime NZ during Safer Boating Week leading up to Labour Weekend when boaties are getting their vessels ready for the summer. Old kapok lifejackets, not made since the 1980s, are still being discovered even though they should have been destroyed by now. Manufacturers recommend that lifejackets should be replaced after 10 years. And while, increasingly, people are using inflatable lifejackets, the gas cylinders can corrode and leak if they are not checked and maintained. Maritime NZ is urging skippers of all recreational boats, no matter how big or small, to “check your lifejackets” – that includes kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and jet skis. The skipper must have lifejackets of the right size for everyone on board. “If they do not have lifejackets they can be fined and can be prosecuted but, in the most tragic situation, no court penalty will ever match the death of a family member or a friend on your boat,” Ms Forsyth said. From 3 November to February 2, Coastguard’s Old4New lifejacket upgrade campaign will once again be happening around the country. Kiwis are encouraged to bring in any old, damaged or worn lifejackets and upgrade them for brand new fit-for-purpose lifejackets at a heavily discounted price. Kapok lifejackets are of particular concern. Kapok is a fluffy, cotton-like plant fibre that can absorb water and cause wearers to sink. Many of these old lifejackets also have cotton straps. Cotton rots over time – even if a lifejacket is not used – and in an emergency can tear or break off. Simple tests for other styles of lifejackets to do every time before going on the water are: Pull the straps, hard. If any of them stretch or tear, do not use the lifejacket, dispose of it, and replace it. Check for any existing tears or cuts in the straps. If there are any, do not use the lifejacket, dispose of it, and replace it. Check for any tears, cuts, or punctures in the lifejacket itself. Club Logo
We have had our current club logo for a very long time, and we would like to update it with a new one. We are hoping that somewhere amongst our members there may be someone who could come up with a new logo for us. If someone comes up with a logo that we use there will be a prize, we are not quite sure what it will be yet –but it will definitely be worthwhile. The logo needs to represent the club, so think about the fish we target, being based on the West Coast, trailer boat game fishing, and anything else you think represents Counties. For it to work as a logo it needs to be relatively simple, otherwise we won’t be able to embroider it onto garments –so no photographs. Apart from that you can do pretty well anything you like.
We will accept entries in just about any format, the absolute ideal would be a vector based computer graphic file. But don’t be put of having a go even if all you have is a bit of paper and a pencil –we can get it put onto computer quite easily. Important Copyright Notice The logo obviously needs to be your own work, and must not make use of any image that may be subject to copyright.

2019 Inter-Club The weekend of 2nd -3rd November saw the annual Clevedon/Counties inter-club competition. This is always a hard fought competition, with only one thing at stake - the reputation of our club. Last years event was very close, so it was all to fish for this year. Fortunately last years missing gurnards were found this year, helping Counties achieve a very respectable victory.

Again this year fish from the competition were donated to the charity Grandparents raising grandchildren, so there were lots of kids enjoying fresh fish for tea that they might not have been if not for the generosity of all involved in the competition. Great work everyone.

Committee Preparations are now well under way for our two main events of the year, the Fish N’ Chicks and the Counties Classic. The ladies have been spending up big on some amazing prizes and you can also expect the usual great prizes at the Classic. Tickets are now on sale for both events and do remember that the Classic is a little earlier next year. The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council have appointed a new CEO, Steven Stanford. He is visiting all clubs to get to know them and last week he visited us. Our NZSFC reps, Stephen and Darin, met with him and reported that it was a positive meeting and he is hoping to bring some new ideas to help encourage membership. We are very lucky to have a good membership here at Counties, but some fishing clubs around the country are struggling.
