Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs Prizegiving 2022 Unfortunately we had to cancel last years prizegiving due to Covid, so we will need to make this years even bigger. We also have the Varta Cup win to celebrate this year, so it promises to be a great day. Book the day, 17th September from around 2pm onwards. It will be held at the Cossie Club. More details closer to the date in the newsletter and on our Facebook page.
2022 AGM This years AGM will be held on 31st August, at the Cossie club. More details nearer the time,but another date to put in your diary.
Counties Classic 2023 Last years Classic was yet another Covid casualty, but it’s back next year -promising to be even bigger and better than ever. Next years event is planned for the 3rd to the 5th of March, so another date to get in the diary.
No Dogs At Prizegivings After a recent event the committee have decided to ban dogs from competition prizegivings held at the big green shed. This decision was taken to make sure that prizegivings remain a safe and pleasant environment for everyone.

Work at the Big Green Shed As you probably remember the side clears from the big green shed were stolen some time ago. There were some delays as we sorted out the insurance claim and then, of course, there were some inevitable delays due to Covid. But finally things are moving forward and construction has started. The committee decided that something a little different from the original clears would be a good idea, most importantly something that could be made more secure. We are building a fixed solid wall up to a bar-leaner height. Then to fill in the remaining space between the top of this wall and the roof we will have some clear sections made. These will be removable, so that when we are not using them they can be stored in the container. After this work has been completed the next thing being planned is to replace the flooring, so that by the time the big competitions come around we can all gather without falling down the various holes that have appeared.

Elbow Update Elbow Boat Ramp Upgrade Project Update The project is nearing practical completion but the past 3 weeks has been impacted by inclement weather and extreme high tides that have slowed progress on the final stages of the concrete works. The contractors have been no match against the mighty Waikato River to drain out the embayment area. Recent progress The rock revetments, retaining wall, balustrade and the concrete mass blocks have been completed. Ongoing maintenance of the temporary boat ramp continues. Planned works The good news is that we have settled weather forecasted, which means the long-awaited window of opportunity to finish the concrete ramp and disestablish the sheet piles and site has arrived. Practical Completion Date Assuming all goes well with the final concrete pour, the boat ramp should be opened by 4 July 2022 and any outstanding tidy-ups will be completed thereafter.

Grunter Hunter Ticket sales were looking pretty sad two weeks out from the comp but they always do. Most people sit and wait to see what the weather is going to do – we all do it to some extent but then of course most of those people see a rubbish forecast and a few days out decide to fish it anyway! This year we offered a cheaper ticket price for members to give them something back and we can expect to see that as a feature in most of our comps from here on in. The Saturday of Queens Birthday weekend was great, the harbour looked as flat is it gets and I just had to go down for a snoop to see what was going on. Some great sized snapper were being caught, with enough gurnard around to convince me some good fish would be caught the next day. I caught up with a few regulars who were preparing to head out and stay the night on the harbour for an early start. The forecast wasn’t looking too bad for the morning and that’s just how it was. We decided to stay in the south side of the Papakura Channel but to be fair the conditions were much better than I expected. Even as the tide turned, the sea didn’t really cut up. Not until about 11.00am at least. Up until then the biggest challenge was trying to find a spot where the current would over power the wind to keep the boat more or less holding it’s position. It was a futile attempt which isn’t surprising. A drogue was pretty much out of the question with six lines in the water. I had itchy feet and just couldn’t wait around for the fish to turn up and by mid-day we only had a trevally, a snapper and two or three gurnard in the bin, none of which were particularly big. One last stop at our old favourite spot x near Brooks Beach and we finally started catching. We took 13 gurnard home but again, nothing big enough, the biggest went to Scott Warrender and weighed in just under the average weight at 740g. We pulled anchor at 1.30pm and smashed our way back to Te Toro to help set up. It wasn’t a pleasant trip back but the day was certainly fishable. Prizegiving went well and everyone seemed to enjoy their day. It was good to see Gerrad Chitty up on stage about time some club members won the thing! Wayne Farrow who won it in 2014 (I think) followed him in second place. Interestingly, when Wayne won, he got the raffle prize for a bottle of rum and just to show off, Gerrad won the booze raffle too. Spooky. 286 anglers fished the competition, weighing in 137 fish. The full results are below. The average weight prize went to Dion Watts with a fish of 0.75 Kg. As several fish were the same weight it is worth mentioning that in the case of two or more fish weighing the same the prize order will be in the order they were weighed in, the first weighed being highest.

Sponsors Grid For the new season we are planning to introduce a sponsors grid, which is probably something that you will have seen if fishing in some other club waters or during our competitions. There will be 24 grid squares available, as shown on the map. Each square will be assigned to a sponsor for the whole season. Our weigh boards will have the sponsors details on, so any fish tagged or weighed will have the sponsor for the square that it was caught in shown. Details of catches on our social media, online and in the newsletter will also have the sponsor grid square included. The sponsors grid will be on our web site and in every newsletter. As well as listing the sponsor on the grid there will be a separate page in the newsletter which will have UNTIES CO details of all the grid sponsors. We will also have a sponsors 1 2 3 4 Sponsors Grid grid leaderboard showing how 1. Sponsor 1 many fish have been caught or 2. Sponsor 2 3. Sponsor 3 tagged in each square. 4. Grid squares will be assigned to sponsors with a draw at our AGM, with the fishing hotspots being drawn first. Existing club sponsors will be given first chance to sponsor a grid square, but if you would like to sponsor a square and have not yet heard from Douggie then do get in touch with him.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
