Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council measure championships are underway and the first prizes have been announced. The junior and senior prizes for June are shown below and the year end final prize is really something -see photo to left. It’s not too late to enter, details of how to enter the competition can be found in this newsletter.
We have QR posters for the big green shed, which will be prominently displayed whenever there are competitions or meetings there. Please use the Covid Tracer app to sign in when you are there.

Cleveland / Counties Interclub Competition This years interclub competition will be held on the 25th and 26th of September. Please put these dates in your diary, after last year we need as many people as possible fishing for us to regain the trophy. Cleveland are hosting this years event, and they always put on a great event for us all. This is a great fun competition, and after last year our reputation is at stake.
Counties “Biff ya shit out” Surfcasting Competition Last year saw the return of a surfcasting competition to our annual callendar. This year it’s back, bigger and better and with a new name. This year the competition will be held on the 20th of November, so get that date in your diary. Dig out your surfcasting gear and get out for some practice.

Franklin Hunting & Fishing
Grunter Hunter 2021 After having to postpone due to a terrible weather forecast on the original date the morning of Sunday 20th June dawned surprisingly warm and virtually windless. Nearly 250 anglers took part, fishing from boats, beaches and kayaks. But wherever they were fishing there was only one target in everyone's sights, gurnard. For some they proved elusive, while others found them in good numbers. With over a hundred fish weighed in there were obviously quite a few of them around. Not the heaviest fish we have ever had for the winner, but the competition was very tight with several places tied with fish of the same weight. If there is more than one fish the same weight weighed in then the first fish weighed gets the higher place, a good reason to make sure you get to the weigh in nice and early. Yet again a certain local “gurnard guru” managed to avoid the winners list, next year eh? (Along with the Warriors). For those not able to catch a winning fish there was the average weight prize, several lucky draws and a couple of raffles to win. Weighing fish for multiple clubs There has been some discussion among the committee recently about people who are members of multiple clubs weighing fish and entering them to more than one club for club awards. We have never had any specific policy on this at Counties and it was decided that we should clarify the situation. The motion that was submitted, and approved, at the last committee meeting was as follows;
From July 1 2021, CSFC ruling will be that all fish can only be nominated for recognition by 1 Club This means that if you are a member of multiple clubs you must choose which club you want to weigh a fish for, it cannot count for club awards at Counties and another club. This brings us in line with most other clubs, who have similar rules. You can choose which club to weigh each fish for and do not have to weigh every fish you catch to the same club. Your weigh certificate must list Counties as the club the fish has been weighed for in order for the fish to count for Counties club awards.

Every Kiwi needs to see this.. An amazing eye opener. A very well researched and presented doco! thanks to all for making it.....it is well beyond time that the QMS was taken out the back and shot and from those ashes build an actual "world leading" example of fisheries management. The formula for a better future is already available...check out... RESCUE FISH Great doco guys. I encourage everyone to watch fully. Excellent eye opening doco. Im fully in support of an overhaul of the quota management system, as a kiwi im not sure where to go from here. Im sure 95% of kiwis are also in support... what do we need to do to help?

Tagging Fish No doubt if I were to mention tagging fish almost all of you would immediately think of game fish, and the tagging programme operated by NZSFC. But there is another fish tagging scheme in operation in New Zealand that we can all get involved in, no matter what fish we catch. Tindale Research is a non-profit organisation that runs an inshore tagging programme. Here are some brief details and contact information for them. Please do consider investing in the tagging kits they offer and start tagging some fish.
