Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs World Record Blue Marlin in NZ Waters Caught on 12th March by Linda Randrup from Waihau Bay Sport Fishing Club, now confirmed as a world record. This is the largest marlin ever caught in New Zealand waters. IGFA Womens World Record on 60kg Line and a NZ All Tackle and 60kg Line Class Record. Surfcasting Competition Returns Some of our more long standing members will remember that we used to hold an annual surfcasting competition. Now it’s back, bigger and better. It will cover the area from the river all the way round the peninsula back to the boat ramp at Te Toro and there will be several categories, not just snapper. This years event will be held on Saturday 7th of November, so get your surfcasting gear ready and put the date in your diary. The weigh in will be held at the big green shed, not on the beach, so we can arrange food and refreshments.

Grunter Hunter 2020 There was a great turn out for the 2020 Grunter Hunter, which was especially impressive as it had been organised on very short notice due to the uncertainty of when lock down would end. A big thanks to the organisers of the competition for getting it all together on short notice and for Franklin Hunting and Fishing for selling the tickets. Also a big thank you to Franklin Hunting and Fishing and Shimano NZ, the event sponsors. As usual the boat ramp was busy from very early with people getting out on the water, although this years winner was not in the queue at the ramp at all. Instead he was heading to Grahams Beach for some surfcasting, proving that you don’t need a boat to win a fishing competition. There were cash prizes for the first ten places, an average weight prize and several lucky draws for Shimano rod and reel combos.
Keegan Wallace, one of our junior anglers, with his winning 1.4kg gurnard which he caught surfcasting from Grahams Beach. This fish boosted his bank account to the tune of $1350, not a bad days fishing.

Cameras on Fishing Boats Six years after the Government first promised cameras onboard commercial fishing boats to prevent dumping and protect vulnerable species, there are fewer than 100 vessels outfitted with the technology. A NewsHub investigation revealed an “explosive” recording in 2018 of Minister of Fisheries Stuart Nash blaming NZ First’s Winston Peters and Shane Jones for the delay in fitting cameras on around 1000 boats. A 2019 Horizon Research poll showed 69% of New Zealanders think not enough is being done to stop dumping of unwanted catch by commercial fishers. “The Government cannot ignore the public’s increasing frustration for those running interference and preventing Ministers from fulfilling their duties. The protection of bycatch species and monitoring dumping are core roles of Minister Nash and Fisheries New Zealand,” says Sam Woolford from public awareness group LegaSea. “The Minister must be free to make decisions in the interests of rebuilding depleted fisheries for the benefit of all New Zealanders. Electronic monitoring is one element that can be readily addressed,” says Mr Woolford. LegaSea and the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council recently released a plan named Rescue Fish that addresses the current regulatory capture where the industry and its regulatory body are too closely aligned and have the ability to sway political decision-making. LegaSea spokesperson Sam Woolford says the Rescue Fish policy is an alternative to the Quota Management System (QMS) because the current situation is no longer acceptable. “Over time fisheries management has become highly political. The QMS is clearly not functioning effectively. Our Rescue Fish policy is designed so there can be no outside influence of decision-making. All decisions will be based on strong principles and more effective legislation,” says Mr Woolford. “Given past donations and NZ First’s ties to Talleys and other fishing companies it is important that we see a degree of separation from the decision-making processes.” The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council President Bob Gutsell commended NewsHub journalist Michael Morrah for breaking the news story wide open so the public can see what is going on behind closed doors. “Clearly the QMS has had its day. It is not fit for purpose any longer and needs to be replaced. In good faith we have developed the Rescue Fish alternative so we can initiate the discussion on what a new fisheries management system might look like,” says Mr Gutsell. To address any cost issues, the Rescue Fish policy proposes the Government own and control the monitoring equipment. Costs will be recovered through a new permitting system. The groups say that any system that is able to be undermined in such a serious way needs reform and are calling on the Government to start a work programme as soon as possible to map out the reforms. Public support for policy change is being sought through a petition and more information can be found on the Rescue Fish website.

New Zealand Sport Fishing Council CEO update June 2020 Under Board guidance a strategic plan is starting to take shape. The Board held a one day SWOT and Pestel analysis exercise which resulted in a discussion document. This has been reviewed and the next stage is to build out the findings from those exercises into a draft strategic plan with actions, resources, and timeframes. The goal is to present the final plan at the September AGM. Four commercial initiatives are underway with more in the pipeline. Those are; • A nationwide discount deal with Office Products Distribution (OPD) on most consumable products used by clubs. Early feedback from clubs utilising the offer is that the discounts are providing good savings. • Rent relief advice developed by an independent property consultant. The rent relief being delivered under this scheme has been between 15% – 85%. • An electricity offer negotiated with Genesis Energy where Clubs receive a $50 power credit for every Club member joining Genesis Energy. The Club member also receives good discounts and a $50 credit. (200 members will provide the Club with $10,000 of free power). A number of clubs have already joined the programme and a steady trickle of Club member applications are in progress. A number of Clubs have now signed up to the Genesis power offer and small numbers of affiliate signups are occurring. This is an opportunity for one and all to reduce power costs and alleviate some of the financial strain imposed by the lockdown. If you want any help marketing to your members please make contact and we will help in any way we can. • Gofuel offer which provides various discounts to participating brands of petrol and diesel. Based on an average sized car gas tank a member can save the equivalent of their yearly club fees over a 12 month period. 1,000 cards were sent out across the Clubs just before the nationals. 10 of those cards are loaded with $100 fuel credit. None of those cards have yet been activated. It would be great to see the prizes won in this trying time. Gofuel signups slowed considerably during lockdown. Now is an opportune time to give it another push to members. The sign up process has become easier. Still a bit laboured but a lot better than before. Why should your members be interested in signing up to this? Based on an average sized tank of gas, filled once a month, members will save the equivalent of the average Club membership fee. Not only that, there are still 10 cards out there with $100 of free fuel on them! The Board has also been assessing a number of CRM / Engagement software options with a view to offering it free to Clubs. The initial software brief was that it needs to provide: A secure repository for Club data A system that facilitates Club communication to members A system that supports Club administration including the ability to automate Club fee reminders and collections A preferred option has been identified and a pilot roll out plan is being worked through with the expectation that 5 – 6 Clubs will participate in the set up process before being made available to all Clubs. This will be an opt in process and not mandatory. The Board has also identified new tournament software for the nationals fishing competition. The software comes from an Australian company and is being used across a number of large Australian fishing tournaments. A mock trial is currently underway utilising data from the last national tournament. This will allow the software company to check point’s scoring logic and processes. Initial results are due end of May. 9
Finally back to Covid 19. The NZ Sport Fishing Council website is now being updated with links to documents relating to the virus and I will continue to send out updates as they come to hand. Water Safety The Council has become a member of the Safer Boating Forum. The forums vision is “Safe boating enjoyed by a responsible and well informed boating community”. The forum is chaired by Maritime NZ and is composed of the following organisations; Maritime New Zealand, Accident Compensation Corporation, Auckland Transport Harbourmaster’s Office, Coastguard Boating Education, Coastguard New Zealand, Drowning Prevention Auckland, Environment Canterbury Regional Council Harbourmaster, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Jet Boating NZ, Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers, Ministry of Transport, New Zealand Jet Sports Boating Association, New Zealand Marine Industry Association, New Zealand Police, New Zealand Search and Rescue Council, New Zealand Underwater Association, NZSUP Safety, Queenstown-Lakes District Council Harbourmaster, Surf Lifesaving New Zealand, Waikato Regional Council, Waka Ama New Zealand, Water Safety New Zealand, Whitewater New Zealand, Yachting New Zealand Youth participation A youth programme that can be added as an extension to current club programmes is being developed and funding has been sought from a number of granting agencies. We are looking for 4 or 5 volunteers to be part of national committee to help drive this initiative. If you know anyone interested please drop us a line. Communications At long last NZSFC is gearing up to become more social media aware / involved. A structured plan will be developed in the coming months. The first step is to get more people and Clubs following the NZSFC Facebook / Instagram pages. A recent competition increased the number of followers by 500 members, 33,589 people visited the page, 3,310 people engaged, 615 specific comments. Most Clubs follow NZSFC Facebook page, for those who don’t please do. And please promote to your members. The plan is to make the page a go to for fishing people and the more of our members that become followers the better. Other business A “Code of Conduct for Water Safety” and “Child Protection” policy has been developed and can be viewed at https://www.nzsportfishing.co.nz/nzsfc-current-documents-policies/. Advocacy NZSFC along with LegaSea continues make noise beyond its size • • • •
NZSFC has been accepted as a full member of the NZ Rock Lobster management group. Efforts have been stepped up to have the Cra3 concession removed. The Rescue Fish policy has been completed and launched. The Council continues to monitor and have input into the various regional RMA fishing control appeals. The latest review being Marlborough.

Membership Renewal As we mentioned in last months newsletter the club is now using Sporty to run our membership and your renewal will be done using this instead of the old system. Hopefully you will find this a more user friendly experience than it was previously. There are two ways of registering your membership, either by using the app or by going to our web site www.csfc.co.nz and clicking on the “Membership Registration� button. You will also need a photo of yourself to upload when filling out the membership registration, this photo will appear on your membership card. You will need the Sporty app on your phone or tablet to use our new digital membership card.
Downloading and setting up the Sporty App Go to the App Store or Google Play and download the Sporty NZ app onto your device. When you start the app find Counties Sport Fishing Club, you only need to do this once and next time you use the app it will be automatically set. If you already use the Sporty app for other clubs you can just add Counties Sport Fishing Club as another organisation.
Once you are set up you should see the screen to the left on your device. Clicking on web site obviously takes you to our web site. The alerts button lets you read any alerts that have been sent out by the club, these might be announcements about competitions or other club news. Contact gives contact information for the club. Register is where you will find club registration. At the moment you can register your membership and fill out your boat check form, this is also where you will be able to register for competitions and buy your tickets. The PhotoCard button will display your digital membership card on your device.
Membership Cards We are now using digital membership cards instead of physical cards. This means you will never be waiting for your membership card, as soon as you have joined your card will be available on the app. It saves the cost of producing and posting membership cards and also reduces plastic waste. Physical membership cards are available for purchase if anyone needs one, just select that option on the membership registration form when you fill the form in.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
