With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Bits & Bobs IMPORTANT NOTE : Membership Cards When you join or renew your membership you will be sent out a membership card for the season. These cards are printed for us and to keep costs down membership cards are sent out to be printed in batches. This means that it may take several weeks for your card to come through to you. If you need your membership card for a competition or to access other game fishing clubs do not leave it until the week before you need it to renew your membership as you won’t have a membership card when you need it. Why not just renew now and make sure you have your card in time for when you need it.

First Marlin Sunday 12th January saw the first marlin over the scales at Te Toro. Scott Brassey caught this 86 kg specimen while fishing from Catalyst. He was out past the 300m mark when he hooked up.
But you don’t need to be that far out to be on the fish. There were reports of two marlin hooked, but dropped, at the 125m mark straight out from the bar.
Seems like Yellow Fin Tuna have been the flavour of the month for many fishers from Counties while they were away on their summer holidays. Here is a fine selection from David Burns, Luke Reiche, Matt Crawford and Ricky Arthur

The briefing will be at the Cossie club on Wednesday the 19th of February starting at 7.30pm. You will be able to register your team and tags will be available for purchase. There will also be copies of the 2020 NZSFC handbook available, which is also available online HERE like last year so you can download it to your mobile device and take it out fishing with you to check out the rules.
Last year Counties did really well, coming in as the second place club in our region and third place in the country. We also had individuals and teams from Counties coming in first place for striped marlin, shortbill spearfish, striped marlin on 15kg line, most tagged and released striped marlin and shortbill spearfish.

Coastguard -a day in the life This is a brief run down of what the Coastguard operations centre in Auckland got up to on new years day. 11 rescue vessels 25 calls for help including 4 emergencies 1,023 trip reports (21% of which were at the touch of a button through the Coastguard App) and this is just in the northern region alone. Ever wondered what it looks like on the other end of the radio? Here's a few snaps from our team in the Operations Centre on new years day lead by Luke McCarthy. This is where your trip reports are logged and the vital coordination and information of incidents happens. Here's to a great 2020, think about our volunteers giving up their time when you head out on the water and do us and your families a favour and wear a life jacket - they've never ruined a day out on the water.
Everyone at Coastguard do an awesome job keeping us all safe, 365 days a year. Huge thanks to all the staff and volunteers working to make this possible.

Yet we want to tell everyone about our wonderful marine environment, and how important it is that we look after it for the generations to follow. Our coastline and the wildlife that lives within it is under threat from over exploitation, bulk harvesting methods and poor appreciation of the value it provides for all New Zealanders. As we work on activities to rebuild abundant fish life, we often need great images to remind people just how special and rewarding the sea around us is. That’s why we would like you to send us your best photos to give us a hand to tell it how it is. It’s an awesome way for you to support us. Pelagic Bait School Fishing Protocol As Gamefish follow the pelagic bait fish schools during the summer months around the central/Upper North Island Coastline. Spatial conflict Issues can arise between Commercial Purse Seine fishing boats and Recreational Game Fishing boats when fishing around schools of bait fish for Gamefish, and when schools of baitfish take up residence in an area and hold gamefish for extended periods of time. NZSFC and the Purse Seine Fleet operators have agreed to the following framework intended to minimise issues arising from spatial conflict. The NZSFC is in regular discussions with purse seine operators (companies and skippers) to avoid, where possible, fishing in areas during game fishing tournaments in the Far North, western Bay of Plenty, and the North Island West Coast. Specific tournament dates and periods are set out below (only West Coast events shown). Both parties have also agreed to promulgate the NZ maritime rules for engaging with fishing vessels. When issues arise; Recreational Skippers are encouraged to phone or email NZSFC President Bob Gutsell (021750562, president@nzsportfishing.org.nz) with details of Date, Time Location Vessel name and a description of what happened. Similarly Commercial Purse Seine vessel Skippers are encouraged to report issues to their Operations Manager with the same details of Date, Time Location Vessel name and a description of what happened. This information will be reviewed by both NZSFC and Purse Seine Operator representatives as part of our joint continuous improvement processes. Main west coast events 2020 •

ADVICE FOR RECREATIONAL AND COMMERCIAL FISHERS, AND INFORMATION ON PURSE SEINE FISHING IN NEW ZEALAND Purse Seine lights andsignals:
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has compiled an information sheet for fishers to create awareness around recreational and purse seine operations interactions. This sheet aims to; 1) create awareness and improve knowledge around maritime rules, 2) provide information about purse seine fishing practices and give context around relevant fish stocks fished by purse seine in New Zealand waters, and 3) provide communication and contact information.
When a purse seine vessel is exhibiting two black cones with theirpeaksmeetingduringthe day,or two all-round lights in a vertical line with the upper being red and lower being white (shown above), it means the vessel is engaged in fishing, andtherefore other vessels must keep out of its way.
1. MARITIME RULES The extracted rules set out below are “snapshots” of the Maritime Transport Act - Maritime Rule 22. Vessel operators must understand, and take responsibility for their own obligations, ensuring compliance, and the safe operation of their vessel to the full set of rules set out in in Maritime Rules Part 22.

Any vessel fishing with nets, lines, trawls, or other fishing apparatus which restricts manoeuvrability, is considered to be “engaged in fishing”, but this does not include a vessel fishing with trolling lines, orotherfishing apparatuswhichdonotrestrictthe vessel’s manoeuvrability.

22.26 Fishing vessels (1) A vessel engaged in fishing, whether underway or at anchor, must exhibit only the lights and shapes prescribed in rule 22.26. (2) A vessel engaged in trawling must exhibit— (a) (i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being green and the lower white; or (ii) ablackshapeconsistingoftwoconeswiththeirapexestogetherina vertical line one above the other; and (b) a masthead light abaft of and higher than the all-round green light, BUT a vessel of less than 50 metres in length is not obliged to exhibit such a light but may choose to do so; and (c) when making way through the water, inaddition to the lights prescribed in this paragraph, sidelights and asternlight. (3) A vessel engaged in fishing other than trawling must exhibit— (a) (i) two all-round lights in a vertical line, the upper being red and the lower white; or (ii) ablackshapeconsistingoftwoconeswiththeirapexestogetherina vertical line one above the other; and (b)whenthereisoutlyinggearextendingmorethan150metreshorizontally from the vessel: (i) an all-round white light; or (ii) a cone apex upwards in the direction of the gear; and (c) in addition, when making way through the water, sidelights and a sternlight. (4) The additional signals described in Appendix 2 to this rule apply to a vessel engagedinfishingincloseproximitytoothervesselsengagedinfishing.

When meeting another vessel head-on, if able, alter the course to starboard, so to pass the other vessel on the port side. A power-driven vessel underway must keep out of the way of avessel engaged in fishing (unless the vessel engaged in fishing is in a narrow channel, or is overtaking). Whentwopower-drivenvesselsarecrossingsoastoinvolveriskof collision, the vessel which has the other on its own starboard side must keep out of the way. The vessel required to keep out of the way must,ifthecircumstancesofthecaseallow,avoid crossingaheadof the other vessel. 22.18 Responsibilities between vessels Except where rules 22.9 (narrow channels), 22.10 (traffic separation schemes), and 22.13 (overtaking) require otherwise, the following rules apply— (1) a power-driven vessel underway must keep out of the way of— (a) a vessel not under command: (b) a vessel restricted in its ability to manoeuvre: (c) a vessel engaged in fishing: (d) a sailing vessel or a vessel under oars;and (2) a sailing vessel underway must keep out of the way of— (a) a vessel not under command: (b) a vessel restricted in its ability to manoeuvre: (c) a vessel engaged in fishing; and (3) a vessel engaged in fishing when underway must, so far as possible, keep out of the way of— (a) a vessel not under command: (b) a vessel restricted in its ability to manoeuvre;
A purse seine vessel may also display two alternative flashing yellow lights in a vertical line, meaning it is engaged in fishing and it is hamperedbyitsfishinggear.Othervesselsmust keepoutofitsway. 3. Signals for purse seiners Vesselsengagedinfishingwithpurseseinegearmayexhibit2yellowflashing lights in a vertical line. These lights must flash alternately every second and with equal lightandoccultationduration.Theselights mustonly beexhibitedwhenthe vessel is hampered by its fishing gear. MNZ

In 2016, 25 percent of purse seine fishing events by domestic vessels operating in New Zealand fisheries waters were observed. During these observed fishing events, there were no observed seabird captures and a low level of marine mammal interaction.2
Jack Mackerel (JMA)3 Abeam, port side

Jack mackerel stocks are managed under the Quota Management System, and support one of New Zealand’s largest commercial fisheries. “Jack mackerel” comprises of three species; the greenback horse mackerel, yellowtail horse mackerel, and Chilean jack mackerel. The distribution of all three species differ, but their ranges partially overlap. Jack mackerels may be caught year-round however the greatest proportion of the purse-seine catch occurs during the spring, early summer and winter months. The largest proportion of jack mackerel catch is taken from the Bay of Plenty although sometimes significant catches are taken off East Northland and the Hauraki Gulf. This fishery has very low levels of bycatch with jack mackerel comprising 96 percent of the catch by weight, with blue mackerel making up the largest proportion ofbycatch. Interactions with seabirds and marine mammals in the jack mackerel purse seine fishery are rare based on observer and fisher reports.

Recommenda�ons: If there is a recreational fisher first on a school when a purse seine vesselapproaches,itis recommendedbyMPI,thatthepurseseine vessel will leave the school to the recreational fisher. Similarly, if there is a commercial fisher first on a school when a recreational vessel approaches, it is recommended by MPI, that the recreational fisher will leave the school to the commercial vessel. If a purse seine vessel is flying a Zulu flag, it indicates that the vessel is shooting nets, and it is recommended by MPI that other vessels keep out of its way.
2. PURSE SEINE FISHERY INFORMATION New Zealand’s commercial purse seine fishery mostly targets skipjack tuna, jack mackerel and blue mackerel. In 2017, there were seven purse seine vessels operating in New Zealand fisheries waters. Almost the entire jack mackerel and blue mackerel catch, and 30 percent of the skipjack catch, occurred within 12 nautical miles from the shore. Purse seine vessels fish the surface and subsurface zone and do not typically make contact with the seabed.
Blue Mackerel (EMA)4 Blue mackerel are also managed under the Quota Management System, andaretakenbyavarietyof methods. The purse seine fishery accounts for the largest and most consistent catches of blue mackerel. Thisfisheryhas verylowlevels ofbycatch withblue mackerel comprisingof98percentofthecatchbyweight,withjackmackerel making up the largest proportion of bycatch. MostbluemackerelpurseseinecatchcomesfromtheBayofPlenty and East Northland, where it is primarily taken between July and December. There is a low level of interactions with seabirds and marine mammals in the blue mackerel purse seine fishery, from observer and fisher reports.
Skipjack tuna (SKJ)1 Skipjack tuna are managed regionally by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, as skipjack tuna are part of the larger Western and Central Pacific Ocean stock. Total skipjack tuna landings within New Zealand fisheries waters make up a very small portion of the overall regional landings for Western Central Pacific Ocean stock (0.6 percent average from 2007-2015, table 1). Skipjacktunaarefast-growing,short-livedandprolificbreeders. The most recent stock assessment by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission determined that the stock was healthy and not being overfished. Thisfishery hasverylowlevels ofbycatchwith skipjacktuna comprising of 99 percent of the catch by weight.
3. COMMUNICATION AND CONTACT INFORMATION On the water: vessels can establish contact on VHF Channel 16 and thencommunicatewitheachotherwitheachotherusing VHFChannel 10.
