JuniorNationals2023

TheJuniorNationalswereheldforthefirsttimelastyear,andtheyarebackagainnext year.TheyareheldoverthetwoweekEasterschoolholidaystogivepeoplethebest opportunitytogetoutfishing.Thiswillbethe7th tothe22nd ofApril2023.Wewillbe holdingourfamilydaycompetitiononthe16th Aprilsothatanyofourjuniorstaking partinthenationalscanalsofishthiscompetition.

TheMarlinMoneycompetitionwasheldatthestartofthismonthandtherewasagreat turnoutwith33boatsenteredinthecompetition.Thereweresomegreatfishweighedinand taggedduringthecompetition.Withaprizepool$3300thewinnersofeachsection,most taggedfishandheaviestmarlin,bothtookhome$1650.Therewerefourweighedfishintotal forthedayandatleast8taggedaswell.Thiswasagreatresult,congratulationstoeveryone whocaughtafishontheday.

TeamSnowdroptookouttheheaviestmarlinsectionwiththeirfishgoing123kgsonthescales -evenbetterthatit’safirstfishforanglerJohan!Welldonecrew.

TeamWestcoastertookawaythemosttaggedfishfortheday,withthreefishgivingallcrew membersagoontherod!Welldoneteam.

AsIwritethisthe2023Nationalsareinfullswing.Thereare48teamsfishingfor Countiesthisyear,andalthoughweareonlypartwaythroughtherehavebeenlotsof greatfishcaughtandtagged.Hereareafewphotosofsomeoftheaction,moredetails nextmonth.

Thedraft HaurakiGulfMarineParkFisheriesPlan hasbeenreleasedforconsultation. YoursubmissionisduewithFisheriesNewZealandby3rdMarch.

Ittakesonlyaminutetohaveyoursayonour quicksubmissionform

Aftersuchalotofeffortandtime,it’sunfortunatetheFisheriesPlanisaverboseattempt byofficialstomaintainthestatusquo.Thereisnointentiontobandestructivefishing techniquessuchasbottomtrawling,Danishseining,orscallopdredgingfromtheMarine Park.YettheMarineParkwasestablished23yearsagosothemarineenvironmentcould beprotectedonbehalfofus,thecommunity.

FisheriesNZ’splanfailstoacknowledgethepoorstatehealthoftheGulf.ThePlandoes notincludeanymeaningful,time-boundactionsthatwilldirectlyaddresstheongoing depletionofourcoastalfisheriesanddegradationofseafloorhabitats.

Thispublicconsultationprocessisthebestopportunitywe’vehadinadecadetodrive change.

FisheriesNewZealandofficialshavepresentedtheirplanandifyoustaysilent,nothingwill change. Weneedyoutoact now,submissionsclose5pmonFriday3March2023.
