Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs IMPORTANT NOTE : Membership Cards When you join or renew your membership you will be sent out a membership card for the season. These cards are printed for us and to keep costs down membership cards are sent out to be printed in batches. This means that it may take several weeks for your card to come through to you. If you need your membership card for a competition or to access other game fishing clubs do not leave it until the week before you need it to renew your membership as you won’t have a membership card when you need it. Why not just renew now and make sure you have your card in time for when you need it.

Remember the Thirds Rule Recently, coastguard volunteers have responded to a large number of vessels that have run out of fuel. On several vessels it was as simple as a faulty gauge; other times it was due to the skipper underestimating the effect of gusty/choppy weather on their fuel consumption, or enjoying the weather so much they went a little further than they ought to! Make sure you know how much fuel per nautical mile your vessel uses, and keep to the 'thirds' rule: use 1/3 of your fuel for the trip out, 1/3 for the trip back, and keep 1/3 in reserve -- just in case conditions change.

More kingfish, these caught by Mitchel Hilton and Marco Langman. Gerald Muir clearly looks delighted with this trevally, the largest he’s caught in the harbour. Brock Johnston was on holiday at the Bay of Islands when he caught these snapper, the largest weighing 7.3kg.

In the early hours of Sunday morning Takapuna and Birkenhead fire crews attended an incident at a petrol station in Northcote. A member of the public was filling tote tanks on a boat which bumped the battery, this arched causing ignition. Crews managed to knock it down fast before it had a chance to spread to the roof and surrounding bowsers. A good reminder to watch out for potential sources of ignition when fueling up your boat -- this fire was caused by a spark from the battery igniting fumes at a petrol station. Ensure all electrical circuits are appropriately isolated Make sure there's sufficient insulation on wiring and battery contacts Watch for static electricity -- ground yourself before filling up Think about what gear you have stowed in the boat – can something cause a spark, is there something you can do to isolate the danger? A safe day boating starts before you hit the road!
A reminder: check the boat you’re paying to be on is a commercial vessel. Recreational boats aren’t allowed to carry paying passengers. How do you know if you’re riding with a commercial operator? Look for a Maritime NZ number on the side. Commercial boats give passengers a greater assurance because: The boat has been inspected and surveyed (assessed to meet safety standards) The driver has been examined for competency The safety equipment has been checked The operator has a plan to manage emergency situations

2020 Nationals
22 - 29 February 2020
The briefing will be at the Cossie club on Wednesday the 19th of February starting at 7.30pm. You will be able to register your team and tags will be available for purchase. There will also be copies of the 2020 NZSFC handbook available, which is also available online HERE like last year so you can download it to your mobile device and take it out fishing with you to check out the rules.
Last year Counties did really well, coming in as the second place club in our region and third place in the country. We also had individuals and teams from Counties coming in first place for striped marlin, shortbill spearfish, striped marlin on 15kg line, most tagged and released striped marlin and shortbill spearfish.

What’s on at the Cossie As well as hosting our club meetings there is lots of other great stuff going on at Waiuku Cossie Club. The restaurant is open lunchtime and evenings, with some great specials. Like the famous Rib and Steak nights on Tuesday and Wednesday with your choice of ribs or steak for only $25, families welcome.
Seafood Special Bowl of chowder, dory fish, garlic king prawns, bread roll, fries, sauces & salad along with a handle of beer or glass of wine - all for $25.

Committee The classic was a great success, and Fish N Chicks looks set to be another great competition. Entries have now closed, with 298 ladies registered. As is often the case we have had a number of people renewing their membership just before they need it for competitions. This often ends up with clubs having to phone us to confirm a persons membership status as they have only just renewed. As the fishing year runs from July to June there are months to get your membership sorted before all the summer competitions come around. Please try and get your membership renewed well in advance to avoid any problems.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
