Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs Trophy Return -Now URGENT If you were fortunate enough to receive a trophy at prizegiving last year it is now time to return it ready for this years prizegiving. Date Change for 2022 Classic Please note that the date for the 2022 Counties Classic is now 11,12,13 March 2022.

Driving on Karioitahi Beach Police are investigating a serious crash at Karioitahi Beach are reminding those driving on the beach to do so legally and safely. The crash happened on Saturday the 31st of July and involved an off road motorcycle. Sadly, the rider sustained multiple injuries and was hospitalised. In general, Karioitahi beach is classified as a road and as such road rules still apply, including obeying the speed limit, wearing seatbelts in vehicles and helmets on bikes. These rules apply to ensure the safety of all people in the area, including those driving or riding on the beach. It is illegal to operate any motor vehicle on the beach unless it has a registration, a current warrant of fitness, the appropriate driver’s license and a permit from the council. Police are working very closely with our partner agencies and the community to ensure people are abiding by these rules, and will continue to take action against those who fail to use the area appropriately. Members of the public can assist with taking photos or videos of any illegal operators and reporting this to Police in the first instance by calling 105. If you see someone driving in a way that may put themselves or others at risk, please contact us.

Prizegiving 2021 This years prizegiving will take place at the Cossie club on the 12th of September, doors open at 2pm. There is a separate door prize for men, women and juniors -these are great prizes. As usual we will provide some food and subsidised drinks. This is always a great event, so come along and celebrate another great years fishing.

Cleveland / Counties Interclub Competition This years interclub competition will be held on the 25th and 26th of September. Please put these dates in your diary, after last year we need as many people as possible fishing for us to regain the trophy. Cleveland are hosting this years event, and they always put on a great event for us all. This is a great fun competition, and after last year our reputation is at stake.

Counties “Biff ya shit out” Surfcasting Competition Last year saw the return of a surfcasting competition to our annual callendar. This year it’s back, bigger and better and with a new name. This year the competition will be held on the 20th of November, so get that date in your diary. Dig out your surfcasting gear and get out for some practice.

Te Toro Ramp If you have been to Te Toro ramp recently you have probably noticed that some of the concrete posts have had wooden facings added to them. This to make them a little less damaging should you rub against them with your boat. We plan to put wood on the rest of the posts between the current ones and the end of the ramp, but need to wait for a low tide to do this. This work was made possible by the materials being provided by generous club sponsors, a huge thank you to them for this donation.

Counties Clevedon Inter-club Competition 25th and 26th September It’s that time of year again, when we do battle with Clevedon to see who gets the inter-club trophy this year. We have always done well in this competition, but as you can see from last years results below we didn’t do quite so well last year. So this year we need to field a really strong team to bring the trophy back. Contact Bob Hilton on 027 4880563 if you want to be on the Counties team this year. This is a real fun competition and there is a great prize-giving at the end of the competition, this year Clevedon will be hosting that.

Elbow Ramp Upgrade Note from Waikato Council As you may have heard, we were planning to start the boat ramp upgrades for the Elbow in the next couple of weeks. Delays to the resource consent process had meant that we weren’t able to start earlier. But we are very conscious of the fact that the whitebaiting season starts on 15 August. We believe that undertaking this work at the start of whitebaiting season would be too disruptive to the many locals and visitors to the river who are keen whitebaiters. This is partly due to the lack of nearby suitable boat ramps that would have enabled us to provide a viable alternative for them. With this in mind we have decided to delay starting the work until 15 October, which is towards the end of the season. The estimated timeframe for the construction project is 8 weeks.

Drone Fishing Earlier this month I got an invite from Grant at NZ Fishing Media, who many of you will know from fishing.net.nz as Grunta, to go and have a look at a fishing drone in action. So a sunny August morning found me at Wattle Bay to see what all the fuss about drone fishing was. The drone they had to try out was a Rippton Mobula, which has a unique auto cast control system. This turned out to be a pretty amazing bit of kit, and the auto cast feature was quite amazing in operation. The drone controller links up to your smartphone and is operated from an app on the phone. The drone is positioned in a launch site and set to this being its “home” spot. Then, using the app on your phone, the point you want to cast to is selected by using a map on the app. Once you have attached your fishing line just press go on the app and stand back and watch as the drone takes off, fly's out to the spot you selected, drops the bait and then returns to base and lands back where it took off from. All of this is done with no input at all from the operator, once the destination is selected everything else is completely automatic. We used what could best be described as a mini-longline on the end of the line. It was a backbone onto which we clipped a number of baited traces and a breakaway sinker on the end. The rods we used were light game rods with electric reels. The reason for the electric reel quickly became apparent when the first line was sent out. As a first go a quite short flight was set, only taking the line out 300m before dropping it into the sea. Off the drone went, dropping the line where it should and then heading home and landing right back where it had started, all done automatically. For a later go we looked at some charts and aimed for the channel, this required a point 650m away from shore. Again the drone took off, headed out, dropped the line and came back home all without any intervention from the operator. The maximum distance that this drone can carry out your line is 1500m, although I doubt that you would want to go quite that far. It can carry up to 2.5kg, but remember that includes all the line you are pulling along behind the drone so braid is definitely the go for this type of fishing. Although some might say this isn’t real fishing, and it would definitely not be allowed in our upcoming surfcasting competition, if you were looking at a kontiki system for catching a feed this is an excellent alternative. It gets the line out more quickly and accurately and as it returns straight after dropping the line it can be used by several people to put all their lines out, all to any spot within 1500m. It is small and light enough to be carried in to remote spots in its own backpack. Also, for gadget freaks this has to be the coolest way to fish. I guarantee that you will get a crowd gathering to watch once you break out one of these on the beach. For more info on the Rippton Mobula take a look at their web site.

Every Kiwi needs to see this.. An amazing eye opener. A very well researched and presented doco! thanks to all for making it.....it is well beyond time that the QMS was taken out the back and shot and from those ashes build an actual "world leading" example of fisheries management. The formula for a better future is already available...check out... RESCUE FISH Great doco guys. I encourage everyone to watch fully. Excellent eye opening doco. Im fully in support of an overhaul of the quota management system, as a kiwi im not sure where to go from here. Im sure 95% of kiwis are also in support... what do we need to do to help?
