Presidents Report Last month I said I had written my last President’s Report. Not unusually for me I got that wrong. This is the last one. I am very proud to be part of Counties Sport Fishing Club and I don’t want anyone to think I am standing down because of anything going on behind the scenes. I wish to remain on the committee, I just feel that someone else can do the job better than me. When I look back on past Presidents, I can’t help but compare their performance to mine and in all fairness, I think there’s plenty of great talent out there that can bring more energy to the role and I feel very humble to be even considered to be in the same league. To all those who have been a part of the club over the last 30 years, I thank you. Regardless of your contribution, be it little or small, I thank you. I have a successor in mind and I think he will do a great job at the helm, steering the ship so to speak. Who is that person? Find out at the AGM!
It has been an absolute honour to represent the club at this level. We have a really good thing going and the general perception of the fishing club and the direction we’re heading is cast in stone. How you think things are, well that is how things are. We’re in good shape and in good hands. I simply ask one more thing of you all. Please support our AGM. Simple as that. We don’t really need more people involved but if you have a burning desire to be part of a very good thing I’m sure we can squeeze you in. It would be great to see a big turnout but I also understand what busy lives we all lead. I just ask that you turn up for the meeting if you possibly can. I heard some very sad news recently, Jeanette Neary was a very important part of the fishing club and I was saddened to hear that she passed away on August 9 while on holiday with her husband Allen. Condolences from myself and on behalf of the club to Allen and Rob. Jeanette is remembered fondly by all who knew her. That’s all I have, Smudge.

AGM Wednesday 28th August At Waiuku Cossie Club This is an important meeting as the committee for the next year will be elected. Also this year we will be voting for a new president, so we need as many members as possible to attend.
Meeting starts 7.30pm You do not need to be a Cossie Club member to attend. All CSFC members and guests welcome.

Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, Trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north Head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

Bits & Bobs Subscriptions Due It’s that time of year again, time to renew your subscription. It’s easy to do, just go online to clubhub and it can all be done from the comfort of your chair, or anywhere else.
Boat Check Forms It’s a new fishing season so you need to get a new boat check form submitted. There is one in this newsletter that you can print out and fill in.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Address List When you are on Clubhub paying your subs please, please, please take a moment to check your address details. It causes a lot of problems if your correct address is not in the system, especially this time of year when membership cards are being sent out. Mentioning no names, but if you list you address as “Waiuku, South Auckland” it’s unlikely that you are going to get your membership card sent out.
Brrrrrr It’s been a bit chilly here this month, but at least it’s not as cold as it has been down in South Island. Coastguard posted this picture of their boat in Queenstown.

Unsurprisingly, given the weather, there have not been many photos of members out catching fish this month, but Skoti caught this very fine Mahi-mahi. He did have to go to Rarotonga to catch it though.

Club Logo We have had a few submissions for a new club logo start to arrive. But we would love to receive some more. If you have been thinking about having a go, then time to put pen to paper (or mouse to screen if you’re digital). You can give your entry to anyone on the committee, or bring it along to the AGM later this month. See page 9 for more details.
MILITARY TRAINING NOTICE The NZ Defence Force will be carrying out a military exercise on 21st and 22nd August 2019 in the Awhitu area. The exercise will involve occasional helicopter night flying and blank weapon firing from midday 21st Aug -11pm 22nd Aug.

Orca at Te Toro There has been a sighting of orca at te toro this month, with several pictures on social media.
If you should be lucky enough to see Orca in the harbour, do remember the rules regarding whales in NZ. Under the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations 1992 it is an offence to swim within 100m of a whale. The penalty for breaching the regulations is a $10,000 fine. In addition to swimming, it is an offence to harass, disturb, injure, or kill marine mammals. Anyone charged with harassing, disturbing, injuring, or killing a marine mammal faces a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment or a fine to maximum of $250,000. Check the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations 1992 for a list of the conditions governing behaviour around marine mammals.
When boating in the vicinity of orca, common sense rules apply and regulations exist so disturbance and danger are minimised. Orca are predators with quite a reputation, but no records exist of deliberate fatal attacks on humans. It still pays however, to show respect around these animals. Follow these rules when sharing the ocean with orca. • • •

Do not swim within 100 m of a killer whale/orca. Your vessel should not be within 50 m of a killer whale. There should be no more than three vessels within 300 m of any marine mammal, additional vessels may watch from 300 m. Your vessel should approach orca from behind and to the side. Do not circle them, obstruct their path or cut through any group. Operate your boat slowly and quietly at 'no wake' speed when within 300 m of a killer whale. Avoid sudden noises that could startle the animals.

Club Logo
We have had our current club logo for a very long time, and we would like to update it with a new one. We are hoping that somewhere amongst our members there may be someone who could come up with a new logo for us. If someone comes up with a logo that we use there will be a prize, we are not quite sure what it will be yet –but it will definitely be worthwhile. The logo needs to represent the club, so think about the fish we target, being based on the West Coast, trailer boat game fishing, and anything else you think represents Counties. For it to work as a logo it needs to be relatively simple, otherwise we won’t be able to embroider it onto garments –so no photographs. Apart from that you can do pretty well anything you like.
We will accept entries in just about any format, the absolute ideal would be a vector based computer graphic file. But don’t be put of having a go even if all you have is a bit of paper and a pencil –we can get it put onto computer quite easily.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
