Counties Sport Fishing Club We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.

The harbour has been fishing very well recently, with lots of reports of nice snapper and a few fat gurnard as well, which is good news for the grunter hunter competition. Here are Mars and Skoti showing off a couple of great autumn harbour snapper. Pat and Gary showing that it’s not all about saltwater species, this fish curently in the lead for the trout length category.

It’s not often that a 141kg Striped Marlin is by-catch, but this one caught by Tracy Johnston on board Rollin Coal was. They were actually after swordfish, and a little later they caught one -a 270.3kg one at that. It took Brian Deadman 2 hours to reel this beast in.

Junior Nationals This year sees the first New Zealand Sports Fishing Council Junior Nationals event being run. It is currently taking place, finishing at the end of the Easter holidays. Several of our junior members are taking part, and like the adult nationals, they are having a great time. We will have the results in next months newsletter. Hopefully the junior nationals will continue and grow in popularity, after all these anglers are the future of our sport. Counties Sport Fishing club will be donating trophies to NZSFC to be used in the junior nationals. Here are a couple of the fish caught so far.

Family Fishing Comp Earlier this month we held our annual family fishing competition. The weather was great and we had a good turn out, with everyone having a fun day with plenty of fish being caught. Unfortunately we did have a slight problem with the prizes, they were all ordered well in advance but when we went to collect them there had been a mix up of some sort and they were not available. Some last minute efforts got us some prizes for the day, and by now anyone who did not receive their prize on the day should have had it dropped off to them. This is a great competition and a good day out for the family. If you have not fished it before you should make an effort to get along next year, definatley worthwhile. Although it is a family competition, making it ideal for taking kids along, you don’t have to have kids to join in the fun.

Recaptured Shark

News recently came in of a recapture by Etienne Du Toit of a shark that was tagged and released by Robert Janse. This time a tagged Bronze Whaler Shark recaptured at Wattle Bay on the Manukau Harbour on the 21st of October 2021. Etienne noted that this female Bronzie was heavily pregnant and the tag was in good condition after a year at sea. This shark measured a T/L of 300cm and was released again. Robert Janse tagged this fish at Grahams Beach 391 days earlier on the 26th September 2020. It measured 297cm on release

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
