Presidents Report The first marlin for our waters has been caught. Congratulations Clinton Hunt. There was one caught a week earlier but it didn’t quite go 90kg. It’s good to know the fish are here but remember to pay your club fees or your friendly team of weighmasters will be expecting a $40 donation for the club. If you have paid your fees but the fish is caught by a non member there is a $20 fee. We brought that rule in a couple of years back after weighing something like 6 or 7 fish in a row for non-club members. I believe this is a special year for Counties Sport Fishing Club as it marks our 30th anniversary. We will be working on a celebration for that one! The next club meeting will be at Te Toro, it’s BYO of course and the BBQ will be available for whoever wishes to use it. Our premier competitions are looming large too so don’t miss out. The Fish’n Chicks comp has a strict cut-off date so don’t miss out on this very popular event. Only one person on the boat needs to be a club member and that can include the skipper. If you are that one person and you are tasked with placing the entry make sure you get it done. Of course the Classic will be another goodie with the planning all but done and dusted. The Marlin Money event would be a handy warm up for sure- let’s hope the weather is good for that one. The actual date of the event will be around Waitangi Day and the fishing day will be chosen to coincide with the best weather. Entries will be on Club Hub as are almost all of our events. One of the easiest ways to keep in touch with club activities is by visiting our Facebook page, it has proven to be a great way for the club to get information out there. Bits & Bobs
Craig Vare with a nice short bill caught out of Pauanui on 5th of January Clinton Hunt with the first marlin in club waters, which was released. Caught Sunday 13th January.
Steve Watts went out looking for Marlin as well, but after drawing a blank stopped off in the harbour on the way back to have a look for some kingfish. As his crew show here, they did much better with the kingfish.
Address List If you have not already done so please log into Clubhub and check your address. Mentioning no names, but if you list you address as “Waiuku, South Auckland” it’s unlikely that you are going to get your membership card sent out.

This is a good example of why you should always have enough fuel on board. The inflatable in the photo ran out of fuel and was unable to move out of the way. Fortunately they narrowly avoided being run over and were rescued by other boaties in the area. Always remember, allow 1/3 of your fuel to get there, 1/3 to get back and 1/3 just in case something unexpected happens.

Nationals
The briefing for this years Nationals will be held on the 13th February at the Cossie Club, starting at 7.30pm. You can register your team and also tags will be available for purchase. Copies of the 2019 yearbook will be available, or you can download an electronic version from here; https://www.dropbox.com/s/h8ems35dg39ai0m/ NZSF_2019_Yearbook.pdf?dl=0 The electronic version is ideal for keeping on your phone so you can check any rules that you might not be sure of any time.
Counties usually do well in this event, and hopefully this year will be no different. So, start making your plans, booking time off work, checking all your gear and get ready to get out there.

Bar Crossing Reports Over the holidays I managed to get out on the harbour fishing with my wife. While we fished I generally had the radio left on channel 18 listening to what was happening around the harbour, listening out for who was going out over the bar. Something that we noticed was the number of boats logging bar crossing reports who didn’t communicate clearly all the necessary information. This made it harder for the coastguard radio operators, who had to call back to get missing information or confirm poorly given information. Keeping communications with coastguard clear and concise makes it easier for them, especially on busy days when they might be dealing with hundreds of radio calls during the day. Remember that the coastguard need the following information from you; When crossing the bar

Vessel name and call sign

If you are entering or exiting the harbour
Intended destination
Which channel you intend to use POB (number of people on board the vessel) Also remember that you require a VHF Certificate to operate a VHF radio legally in New Zealand, the only exception is making an emergency call. If you don’t have your VHF certificate it is very easy to get one. Coastguard Boating Education offer an online course that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Committee At the January committee meeting the progress for our competitions for this year was reported from the sub committees. Everything is progressing to schedule on all comps, and tickets have already started selling on clubhub for the Classic and Fish N’ Chicks. Remember to get in early for the competitions to avoid disappointment. We also had our first financial report from our new treasurer Nick. He has been working with Bob on integrating clubhub with our bank accounts to simplify online payments. It’s not always easy getting computers to talk to each other, but progress is being made. If you have made a payment recently then you might have noticed that we can now process online payments.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
