Presidents Report The last fishing competition of the year is fast approaching, on June 9 we have our gurnard only comp – The Franklin Hunting & Fishing Grunter Hunter. We will also have Shimano as a sponsor so we will have some quality prizes once again. With a $3000.00 1st prize it’s going to be a popular event. We’re looking at the possibility of having someone with a professional fish filleting background who will process people’s fish for a small fee. Just an idea at this stage but if you know of someone interested get hold of me, Phil Nicklin, Carey Walter or Mike Oldfield. Once that is out of the way we are heading into a brand new year where
we will kick things off all over again starting with the Icebreaker. The new year starts on July 1st and that means it will be time to think about committees and stuff. We have been lucky to have had some really quality people running the show and while I have enjoyed my 2 terms as president I will be standing down at the end of this term. The job is made easy by the people we’re surrounded with but soon it will be
someone else’s turn. Meanwhile I’ll be working on finding out where the gurnard are.

Bits & Bobs Check your GPS On the 6th of April the GPS system date rolled over from week 1023 to week 1024, which meant the date reset back to zero. Whilst most modern GPS units can cope with this change, some older units reset back to August 1999. This may cause effected units to give the wrong time or position or lock up completely. Some of these units can be repaired with upgrades, but some will become unusable. If in any doubt check with the manufacturer of your GPS.

The End of Paper Newsletters Although most of our newsletters are delivered electronically now, we do still post a few out. After discussion at the last committee meeting it was decided that we will cease to send paper newsletters out at the end of this club year. The costs for producing, and posting, them is no longer sustainable for the club. Although we make a small charge to receive a paper copy of the newsletter the actual cost to us is way above this. In a move towards this we have edited the current list of people who receive paper newsletters to only those who have currently signed up for them on Clubhub. Also starting in the new club year we are planning an easier way to receive your electronic newsletter, more news on that soon. 5
Brock Johnson recently caught his first Mahi-mahi, and also found a good way to stay cool on a hot day fishing.
His and Hers fish, Stephen Foote with a 3.4kg trevally and Jaleh Foote with a 3.67kg snapper, both caught surfcasting “up North�.

Stu Richie caught these two snapper on a kontiki at Kariotahi beach, at 8.7kg and 8.6kg both very close to the magic “20 pounder� mark.

Save Our Fisheries –Drink Beer Moa Brewing Company loves beer. They also love fishing and wanted to do something positive to help recreational fishing in New Zealand. Naturally, Moa turned to LegaSea to see if they could help out. Moa liked what LegaSea is doing to protect and grow New Zealand’s fisheries. So Moa created LegaSea Lager. For every dozen sold, a percentage is donated to LegaSea to help keep recreational fishing alive in New Zealand.
Moa’s Executive Chairman, Geoff Ross explains, “Collectively the team at Moa has always had a vested interest in the marine environment. We feel fishing is one of the our most important social occasions. Without an abundance of fish no one will fish and the opportunity to forge friendships while at sea will disappear. That’s why we have teamed up with LegaSea. We want to support them and help rebuild our fisheries. We want our kids and our grandkids to be able to enjoy this uniquely Kiwi way of life.” “At Moa, we believe nothing says summer more than dropping a line in the sea and pulling up some magnificent kai moana for the barbecue with our mates, and what better way to wash it all down than a cold LegaSea Lager,” Geoff Ross continued. LegaSea’s Corporate Relations Manager Simon Yates says “The relationship with Moa is significant because it speaks to the growing realisation that New Zealand’s fisheries are in crisis. Now, supporting a positive change is as simple as buying a box of LegaSea Lager at the supermarket. Together we can make a difference.” “Our work is about ensuring we leave the fisheries of New Zealand in better shape than we found them. Unfortunately, that’s becoming increasingly difficult. Yet growing support from the public and from organisations like Moa is motivating. It’s clear what’s at stake. We can make a difference but it will take a little effort from everyone,” says Simon.

Counties Junior Team As you may have seen on our Facebook page we are entering a junior team in the Mercury Bay Junior Tournament, which takes place on the 27th and 28th of April. With money raised at the Calcutta auction at The Classic we offered the chance for four junior anglers to have their entry sponsored by the club. This sponsorship included competition entry, team uniforms, the boat to fish from and accommodation while there. The competition was open to any junior club members who would be between the ages of 12-16 at the time of the completion. As well as being advertised on our Facebook page all eligible club members were contacted to tell them about the competition. To enter they had to put together a short video clip of themselves, or write an application letter, telling us why they should be chosen. It was decided that the fairest way to select the winners from the entrants would be by drawing the names. To ensure fairness the draw was conducted by an independent person, local JP Robin Elliot kindly agreed to do this for us. The draw was held live on Facebook on Sunday 7th April. The winning names are below. We would like to thank everyone who entered, and wish the winners the best of luck in the competition. As a club we are proud to be able to enter an official Counties Sport Fishing Club team in this event.

Family Day Sunday 14th April brought the annual family day competition. A little more low key than the classic, and not quite so serious, this is always a great day out. Apart from a shower the weather was pretty good for us this year, and there were plenty of fish caught. As this is a family competition there were three categories for entries, up to 10 years old, 10-16 years old and adult.

Who Are Legasea?: As you will see in this months committee notes at the last committee meeting we voted to make a donation to Legasea on behalf of the club. So, for anyone who doesn’t already know who they are here is a little bit of information about them. LegaSea was established by the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council in 2012 to elevate public awareness of the issues that affect recreational fishers and inspire people to support us. This support funds advocacy, alignment, education and research. LegaSea is a not for profit organisation.
Manifesto for New Zealand’s marine inshore fisheries New Zealand’s fisheries are owned by the public of New Zealand and managed by the Crown on our behalf. The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, LegaSea, and its supporters are opposed to attempts to privatise this public asset and believe we must take a stand to protect the public’s access to their own fisheries. About this Manifesto This document outlines the policies required to restore New Zealand’s inshore fisheries to abundant levels and return the marine environment to a more productive ecosystem. Those policies are: 1) Establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry into fisheries management and the Quota Management System. 2) Amend the Fisheries Act 1996 to include an Allocation Principle. 3) Remove industrial fishing methods such as trawling, seining and dredging from the inshore zone. 4) Establish a separate, well-resourced Ministry of Fisheries. 5) Amend section 13 of the Fisheries Act 1996 to replace the minimum stock target of B MSY with a minimum biomass target of B50, that is 50% of the unfished stock size. It is our collective view that New Zealand needs a full review of our current fisheries management system to better provide for both reasonable public access to marine fisheries and the ability to conserve marine resources for future generations. Public confidence in the way our fisheries are being managed is plummeting. The ongoing reports of wasteful practices, widespread dumping, and high grading all point to a system with poor oversight and a Ministry captured by the very people it is charged with administering. Only a comprehensive review of fisheries management and the Quota Management System will enable us to truly understand the depth of mismanagement and the blockages that prevent the restoration of our fisheries. Because there are several inshore stocks where the recreational catch has collapsed prompt action is required to rebuild our marine resources and the valuable ecosystem services they provide.

Committee At the first full committee meeting for a couple of months there was quite a bit to go through. Both of our main competitions were successful again, with both Fish ‘N Chicks and The Classic going smoothly. A huge thanks to everyone involved in these events, without input from a large number of people they simply would not happen each year. The committee voted to make a donation of $1000 to Legasea, on behalf of the club. They are the main voice of recreational fishing in NZ, and we need to support them. It was decided that at the end of this club year we will stop producing the newsletter in paper form. Although most of the newsletters go out electronically we do still post some, but unfortunately the costs for doing this are becoming too high for us to sustain.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
