Signal Station Closes The Auckland Harbour Master has announced that from the 30th March the South head signal station will no longer be maintaining a watch and Ports of Auckland will no longer routinely survey the bar. This should not impact recreational users, who should continue to log their bar crossing reports with Coastguard on channel 18.

Bits ‘n Bobs Got an old fishing rod you don’t want? Then Jeanette Neary would like to hear from you. She has a couple of reels that she is taking to Fiji next month to donate to a local village and is looking for someone who can donate rods for them. If you can help contact Jeanette on 0273440279

IGFA Fishing Contest The IGFA are running a worldwide fishing contest, from October 1st 2017 through to September 1st 2018. Obviously not all the 74 species are available here in NZ, but some are. For full details see their web site;

When something goes wrong on a harbour or river bar, the consequences can be severe. Too often we see boaties getting into strife on harbour and river bars because they don't understand all the risks and the steps needed to mange them. While the evening won't fully equip boaties lacking the experience to tackle a bar crossing, our Raising the Bar seminar has been developed to help educate boaties interested in knowing more about crossing bars. These interactive sessions will be somewhere between 1 - 1.5 hours and be presented by a number of friendly and approachable specialists who will cover things such as: Why they are dangerous What should you consider before planning a trip What sort of equipment should you have on the boat What steps should you take to keep your vessel and crew safe Communication protocols including lodging the vital Bar Crossing report with Coastguard • Local area knowledge such as channels and leads While entry is free, a donation towards costs would be greatly appreciated. • • • • •

Committee At the committee meeting Smudge read out an email of thanks that we had received from Waiuku Yacht Club, who were the chosen local charity for the Calcutta auction held at the classic. The money will be going towards junior sailors. It is good to be able to support local charities so thanks for everyone who bid in the Calcutta to make this possible. The clears on the green shed at to Toro that had been damaged have been fixed by the supplier. This was done under warranty and at no cost to the club –thanks Cairnscorp. A motion was put forward, and carried, that we should seek funding from the Cossie club community fund to purchase a complete new set of dog bone connectors for the pontoons at Te Toro. Also May 19th was set as a maintenance day to work on the ramp and pontoons, give Smudge a shout if you would like to help out.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
