Presidents Report I’m off for a 3 week holiday down the South Island, which means I will miss both the Snapper Slam and the Interclub Challenge. Bugger! I hope both events go well. We have not run the Snapper Slam for a few years because of the weather and as a result it keeps getting postponed. This year we decided that the competitions either go ahead on the planned day or not at all. After all we don’t postpone the Counties Classic or The Fish’n Chicks if the weather is bad. So there will be no follow up day, the event will be on or off. Same for the Interclub Challenge, but there will be somewhere to fish regardless of the weather. Clevedon are always great hosts to us and we need to reciprocate that good hospitality. There are some good reports coming from both the harbour and the coast so it’s a great time to get out on the water but as always please take the time to check the weather and lodge a trip report before heading out. Let someone know where you are going and when you will be back also and if that changes let them know. Fuel costs are just going through roof and that is something that will hit us all hard. Unfortunately there is not much we can do but as the cost of fuel rises the tax take goes hand in hand getting bigger and bigger returns. It hurts that most of the taxes have no benefit whatso ever for boaties. Licensing for boat owners is another cost that concerns me. Every time a boat tips over the social media warriors start crowing about licensing and registration. I hope it never happens but sadly one day I think it will. Franklin Hunting & Fishing have a night with Tony Orton as a guest speaker organised for October 23, there will be other guests too and as always, Franklin Hunting & Fishing will put on a great night. Which I will also miss. Again, bugger! It is not exclusive to CSFC so there will be plenty of people there. We are putting on a bus from Waiuku which will leave the Cossie at 6.00pm. Bits ‘n Bobs No Newsletter? Do you know someone who did not receive last months newsletter? Members who have not paid their subs yet have now been removed from the newsletter list, so to start getting them again they need to pay their subs. It’s easy to do, just go online to clubhub
Remember, when at the ramp, never pull away before you have attached the safety chain. Sometimes the winch ratchet can let go, leading to unfortunate events like this one last month at Te Toro. Also “self-locking” boat latches are not fail safe either. You should still attach the safety chain when using these.

Hunting and Fishing Night 23rd October Tony Orton has been touring New Zealand with his current talk, Journey of a Fisherman. In which he shares all manor of fishing information from gear selection, knots, natural and live baiting techniques, experience from his busy charter operation and overseas trips. Finishing with a Q&A session this promises to be a great night. See page 4 for more details.

Counties Vs Clevedon The annual Counties Vs Clevedon interclub competition is coming up soon, on the 27th and 28th of October. We have a reputation to uphold in this competition, and Clevedon are talking of winning this year. To make sure that doesn’t happen your club needs YOU. If you think you can catch some good fish then give Bob a call or text on 027 4880563 to sign up. Fishing can be anywhere as long as you are back in time for the weigh in. We are hosting the event this year and the weigh in will be at the big green shed, Te Toro. Bob has taken charge of catering and has promised a really great feed –but only if you catch some good fish! This year all weighed fish, and any other fish you want to donate, will be given to charity. Local representatives from the charity Grandparents Raising Grandchildren will be taking the fish to distribute in the community. BBC Wildlife The club received this correspondence from the BBC Natural History Unit this month. If anyone has something they would like to share with them let us know and we will give you contact details. I’m contacting you as a researcher from the BBC Natural History Unit. I found your details on the International Game Fish Association website, and was hoping you might be able to provide advice on a project we are developing. We are currently developing an eight part series, which will cover the majority of biomes across Earth, including episodes for both “Shallow Seas” and “Deep Sea/Open Ocean”, a “Human Habitats” episode that will cover cities, agriculture, shipwrecks, human-wildlife interactions, etc., and a final “Heroes” episode focusing on conservation. The series is still in its very earliest stages and has not yet been greenlit, but we hope that it will match or exceed the size and scale of the “Blue Planet” and “Planet Earth” franchises. An emphasis of the series is to focus as much as possible on new behaviours or species that have never been filmed before, and we are very keen to talk with fishing enthusiasts for potential new stories for our Shallow Seas and Open Ocean episodes. Our sequence of giant trevally hunting seabirds for Blue Planet II, for example, came from reports from fishermen and had never been documented by scientists (link below), and we are hoping there might be similar stories out there that are known in local communities but are still new to science. As initial research, I was wondering whether there are any particularly interesting events or behaviours that you know of that you feel could potentially be filmed as part of our series. Typical behaviours we tend to focus on include predation, fighting, migration, huge baitballs/ aggregations, etc. but we’d be interested in hearing about any other unusual anecdotes such as breaching, bioluminescence, etc. Stories also don’t have to be limited to fish, so could include marine mammals or seabirds. If we were to go ahead and pursue any of these stories, we would hope to collaborate with you when it comes to filming. Is there anything that any members of the Counties Sport Fishing Club know of that you think could be of interest to our series?

Fishing Crew A new Facebook group has been set up called “Waiuku Fishing Crews” and, as the name suggests, it is all about linking up people who want to get out fishing but don’t have a boat and people with a boat who either don’t have a crew or have a spare fishing space on their boat. This is the groups description;
I created this group to fill boats with empty spaces for a win win situation and to meet new friends that love fishing too. Please add your mates that love fishing and have boats gear or money-lol. Each skipper has their own rules but most ask for the normal stuff chip ins for gas bait ice and respect for their boat rules while onboard. Sounds like a great idea, so please consider joining, and spread the word around. The more people that join the better it will get. With the way petrol prices are going up and up sharing the cost between several people could help get everyone out fishing more.

When something goes wrong on a harbour or river bar, the consequences can be severe. Too often we see boaties getting into strife on harbour and river bars because they don't understand all the risks and the steps needed to mange them. While the evening won't fully equip boaties lacking the experience to tackle a bar crossing, our Raising the Bar seminar has been developed to help educate boaties interested in knowing more about crossing bars. These interactive sessions will be somewhere between 1 - 1.5 hours and be presented by a number of friendly and approachable specialists who will cover things such as: Why they are dangerous What should you consider before planning a trip What sort of equipment should you have on the boat What steps should you take to keep your vessel and crew safe Communication protocols including lodging the vital Bar Crossing report with Coastguard • Local area knowledge such as channels and leads While entry is free, a donation towards costs would be greatly appreciated. • • • • •

Committee At this months committee meeting the final details for the Snapper Slam were sorted out, this will be on Sunday 5th November and should be a great comp. There is no reserve day and if it is cancelled due to bad weather entry fees will be refunded. Entry will be via Clubhub. The Clevedon Vs Counties interclub will be on 27th and 28th October and we are hosting this years event. It was decided to hold this at Te Toro, where we will be having a spit roast and bbq. The committee approved a donation of $500 to the Westpak helicopter, and the Counties Classic sub committee will also consider if a further donation can be made from fundraising at this event. It was considered by the committee that the Coastguard and Westpak Helicopter were both services that our members could possibly end up relying on to save their lives and as such we should support them where possible.
