Presidents Report We’re right at the sharp end of the year, an old season is over and a new one begins. Here we go again! It was a great year for the club and it got off to an excellent start with the The Ice Breaker dragging in 80 or so hardy souls to brave our first event of the year. Some great examples of every class of fish caught with the exception of broadbill but something tells me this category will remain as a sought-after prize in years to come. Thanks to our sponsors and the anglers who fished some extreme locations to try their luck. Awesome effort and one of my favourite events. The new year also brings some changes for the club, with elections coming soon to vote in a new committee. I thank everyone who has assisted in any way over the last year. Special thanks to the committee for your past efforts. If you decide to stay on that’s great. If you need to move on that is also fine, thanks for your great work. Kelly Muir is one who has had to stand down and while Kelly’s work as Treasurer will be sorely missed, Kelly brought a real sense of professionalism to the role, thanks heaps Kelly – it really has been a pleasure having you on board. That said, we need a new Treasurer! If you have the skills for the job then please let us know. Past treasurers have all shared common traits - attention to detail, not afraid of keeping us in line and a good head for numbers. Easy eh! Please, if you have some skills to offer the club we would love to hear from you. While I understand that it is difficult for people to attend club meetings these days and you won’t often hear me complain about a poor turnout to a club meeting, I do ask you to do your very best to attend the AGM. It is a very important event for the club. We elect new committees and we are always happy to have new people on board. We truly do have some great people with us but there are plenty more of you out there. It has also been a very sad week for me and many other CSFC members with the news that John Moran passed away on Sunday 15. John was a member of our club, a one time committee member and he and I launched the now very successful Grunter Hunter competition. He had a loyal following as a writer and I consider it a great privilege to have been asked to take his place when he retired from that role. Condolences to Cheryl, John Jnr & family. Commercial Fishermen Fined Commercial fishermen fined, vessel forfeited after set net blocked entrance to bay on Manukau Harbour Two commercial fishermen have been convicted and fined after a commercial set net was found to be blocking off almost all of the entrance to a bay in the Manukau Harbour. Members of the public reported the offending to the Ministry for Primary Industries in July last year after one of the men was twice spotted setting and retrieving a commercial set net from a vessel in Symonds Bay. The net had effectively blocked off more than a quarter of the bay, MPI said in a statement this afternoon. It said the second man, who's the owner of the vessel and holds the commercial fishing permit the vessel was operating under, was not on the vessel on the days in question but admitted he failed to provide proper training or direction to his skipper. Both men were fined $1000 each when they appeared in the Waitakere District Court in June and the $20,000 aluminium vessel at the centre of the offending was ordered forfeit to the Crown. MPI spokesman Stephen Rudsdale said fishery officers later spoke to the fisherman who said he was aware of the restrictions in channels but didn’t know the rules about bays. "MPI acted on the information the public provided us and this has resulted in both the fisherman and the owner of the vessel being financially penalised," he said. The case is a timely reminder for all commercial fishers to ensure they're aware of the rules around set-netting in bays, Mr Rusdale said. "Offences of this nature are very difficult to investigate and, ultimately, prosecute but our job was made much easier by the efforts of the public," he said. Mr Rudsdale is urging people to ring the 08004POACHER line (0800 476 224) if they see any suspicious 'on the water' activity.

Treasurer Wanted One of the most vital roles in any club is a good treasurer. We have been very lucky to have had an excellent treasurer for several years in Kelly Muir. But due to family commitments she is no longer able to fill this role for the club and will not be standing for re -election at the AGM in August. If you think that this is a role that you could take on then give Smudge a call and he can give you an idea of what is involved, and perhaps arrange for you to have a chat with Kelly.

Sinking of the Francie I’m sure you all remember the sinking of the Francie, a charter boat working out of the Kaipara harbour, on 26th November 2016. I remember hearing the first reports of a missing boat on the news that afternoon and hoping for a good outcome. As time wore on it became clear that this would not be the case, and tragically 8 people lost their lives that day. A huge price to pay for trying to catch a feed for your family. The Transport Accident Investigation Committee have now released their report on the accident, and you can see the full report here. The cause of the sinking was the boat taking a large wave over the port quarter, which capsized the boat. Looking back over a history of bar crossing reports and cross referencing them with weather forecasts for those days the investigation found that the Francie had a history of crossing the bar in weather that was not suitable for the vessel. On the day in question the forecast was for the weather to get worse. Despite the forecast the skipper took the decision to cross the bar to fish. The outward journey was uneventful, but by the time they were heading back in the forecast worse weather had arrived. Of the 11 people on board the boat only three were wearing life jackets, and these were jackets they had taken along themselves. No one was wearing a life jacket issued by the skipper. Of the people wearing a life jacket one was wearing a type 403 jacket, which was designed for watersports, not the open ocean and one was wearing a type 401 inflatable jacket, without a crotch strap. Both of these people were among those who drowned that day. The inflatable jacket was found, uninflated, separate from the wearer. We can all learn important lessons from the events of that day. If crossing a bar check the weather forecast, and only venture out if the conditions are going to be safe for your vessel to get out and back in safely. Wear a life jacket that is suitable for what you are doing. A life jacket without a crotch strap can easily ride up over your head and slip off. If you have an inflatable life jacket without a crotch strap consider swapping it for one that has a crotch strap, or adding a crotch strap to your existing jacket if they are available.

Icebreaker The weather was fairly kind to most people, wherever they were heading, for our Icebreaker competition. This comp offers the chance to fish anywhere in the country, as long as you are back at Te Toro for the weight in. A great excuse for a road trip, or to fish your back door –your choice. Old EPIRBS The Rescue Coordination Centre NZ is calling on people to dispose of their EPIRBS correctly and take extra care when carrying or testing their beacons, as the service had 282 inadvertent activations last year. Rodney Bracefield says a significant proportion were due to people activating their beacons to test them. “In the past, if people switched their EPIRB on it wasn’t picked up by a satellites immediately so it wasn’t such a problem,” Bracefield says. “But now we’ve got instant satellite coverage, so if you turn them on the message goes out straight away.” There were also 36 activations last year due to people throwing their beacons in the bin and them later activating. If a beacon isn’t registered, then a search and rescue operation is launched to locate it as it is impossible to determine whether it is a legitimate emergency. “We get about one activation a month from a beacon in landfill,” Bracefield says. “People put them in the rubbish and they get damp and activate, so we end up having to locate them and dig them up in the tip so we can turn them off. Bracefield says RCCNZ doesn’t have figures for how much it costs the service to locate beacons that have been thrown away, but says it isn’t cheap. “The helicopter hours can often be considerable. In all cases, if the beacon was registered it would considerably to reduce the search effort.” If you're looking to dispose of your old PLB or EPIRB, bring it into Coastguard, a Police station or a fishing retailer such as Burnsco rather than binning it - it'll help save a LOT of searcher time and money!

When something goes wrong on a harbour or river bar, the consequences can be severe. Too often we see boaties getting into strife on harbour and river bars because they don't understand all the risks and the steps needed to mange them. While the evening won't fully equip boaties lacking the experience to tackle a bar crossing, our Raising the Bar seminar has been developed to help educate boaties interested in knowing more about crossing bars. These interactive sessions will be somewhere between 1 - 1.5 hours and be presented by a number of friendly and approachable specialists who will cover things such as: Why they are dangerous What should you consider before planning a trip What sort of equipment should you have on the boat What steps should you take to keep your vessel and crew safe Communication protocols including lodging the vital Bar Crossing report with Coastguard • Local area knowledge such as channels and leads While entry is free, a donation towards costs would be greatly appreciated. • • • • •

Committee At the committee meeting this month we received official notice from Kelly, our current treasurer, that due to family commitments she would not be seeking re-election to the role at the forthcoming AGM. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kelly for her excellent service to the club. Although the treasurer is a role that is often in the background and can go by almost unnoticed, without the work Kelly has done for us the club would not be able to function. We are looking for a replacement, and if you are interested give Smudge a call and he can fill you in on what it involves. The local NZSFC area group asked local clubs if they would like to contribute financially to the running of this years group meeting. As a committee we declined, but said we would be willing to host it again at some time in the future –as we did for them last year.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
