Presidents Report Now is a time when many fishermen but their gear away and fishing goes on a hiatus until springtime. While the weather can be challenging there’s plenty of opportunities. Most of us know that stuff and fish whenever we can of course. The Grunter Hunter draws in a lot of people from outside of the club right at the start of winter which is great to see. We have Franklin Hunting & Fishing back as our major sponsor along with Shimano so once again we have some real quality prizes on offer. The harbour is fishing really well and gurnard are starting to put on a good show. Naturally I’d like to see the major prizes go to a CSFC member. We will have an in store promotion at Franklin Hunting & Fishing on May 25 where we will be handing out advice on how to catch those little red fish. Charlie Norton has arranged to get the weigh station shed painted. It was looking really tatty since it got graffitied several years ago. I haven’t seen the finished product but the art work done so far looks fantastic and as Charlie said it would make a great backdrop for weighed fish photos. We have a General Meeting this month it would be good to see a good turnout. Don’t forget The 2019 Franklin HUNTING & FISHING GRUNTER HUNTER - June 9th. Last weekend saw some great weather on Saturday, and the harbour was fishing well. Lots of people out fishing, here are a few pictures.

Mars was out on the Manukau in April, looks like it was a good trip; Experienced a manic hour of fishing on the Manukau this morning. On the spot before light showed itself. The weed spoiled the show initially, but once the current eased the fish had a chance. And they took advantage. 14 solid snapper and 5 good trevally and then it was all over. The current picked up and the weed returned ending our fun. A quick shot at another spot away from the red scourge produced 3 kahawai and we were done. Trick was being out early in the calm conditions and hitting the slack tide. I love my backyard

Counties Junior Team You may remember from the last newsletter that the Counties Classic committee had donated money raised in the Calcutta auction to enter a team of juniors from the club in the mercury Bay Junior Tournament. This took place on the 27th and 28th of April, and our team consisted of Mitchell Hilton, Taylor Oldfield, Kirby Taylor and Brooke Glenny. As you will see form the pictures here, they all had a great weekend. The weather was close to perfect and there were some pretty good fish caught. So good in fact that Brooke won the heaviest snapper in the tournament with a 7.64kg fish, and also got third place for skipjack tuna. Well done to the team and a huge thank you to all the parents and helpers who made the whole thing possible, and a special thank you to the Hulls for providing the boat for the team to fish off. A great effort by everyone involved and they represented the club brilliantly.

Grunter Hunter It’s almost that time of year again, with major sponsors back on board this year the 2019 Hunting and Fishing Grunter Hunter is happening on June 9th. Tickets are available from Frankiln Hunting and Fishing in Pukekohe or online through clubhub Adults $30 Juniors $15. If you go in store on May 25th you will find some local gurnard experts giving out gurnard catching tips, tricks and advice. Be sure to get your tickets early, close off for ticket sales is Friday June 7th at 5pm –make sure you aren’t disappointed. As usual there will be a free BBQ, raffles, lucky draws and a top prize of $3000 along with prizes for the heaviest gurnard down to 20th place and average weight. The 2019 Franklin HUNTING & FISHING GRUNTER HUNTER - RED GURNARD ONLY Prizes will be drawn if the weather dictates no fishing. Anglers must present their tickets to the Weighmaster to be eligible for prizes even if not weighing a fish All fish must be caught on a rod & reel Fishing starts 12.01am Sunday June 9 Weigh in opens at 3.00pm. Anglers must be in the weigh in queue by 4.00pm June 9 – no exceptions Anglers may fish the Manukau Harbour or the West Coast from Raglan North Head to Kaipara South Head Spot prize and drawn prize winners must be present to claim prizes Juniors must be UNDER 16 years old on June 9 Only one gurnard may be weighed per angler. If two fish the same weight are weighed then the first of those fish weighed will be deemed to be the heaviest There will be no alcohol sales at the venue All weighed fish will be marked at weigh in by having a fin clipped or other method of identification Safety is every skipper’s responsibility.

MPI Plan Flawed In February the Ministry for Primary Industries held a series of public meetings to discuss their latest proposals for the future management of commercial fishing. The Fisheries Change Programme is being welcomed by large quota owners who clearly expect the Minister to increase catch limits. However, if the proposals are pushed through commercial fishers on the water will have some hard choices about where and how to fish, what to do if they catch large quantities of small fish, and how to make a profit when the port prices come down. The cost of onboard cameras and penalties for any infringements will fall on the boat owner and fishers, not the quota owner. MPI’s proposed changes favour the large companies and will be another nail in the coffin for the small, independent fishers who are striving to keep their heads above water. It will also be another setback for many of us who aspire to have healthy, abundant inshore fisheries. Currently a minimum size limit applies to 10 finfish species for commercial fishing and 12 for recreational fishing. If size limits are removed and the release of live fish is prohibited commercial interests are anticipating Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) increases, most likely based on current estimates of legal discards. Estimates for discards are poor and no doubt commercial interests will try and claim as much as they can. LegaSea is adamant that there must be no increase in the TACC based on estimates of historic wasteful, illegal dumping of fish. No size limit also means that more small fish will die. We currently have no way of measuring the impact of such radical change. Commercial landings are measured in kilos and tonnes, and there is a big difference in the numbers of animals that make up that tonnage. For example, a tonne of 30 cm snapper is made up of 1680 individual fish. At 20cm it equals around 5200 fish. At 15cm that number jumps to 11600 snapper.
Snapper is just one of many species taken in the mixed trawl fishery so there will be other species that will affected, it’s just that there is more MPI research into snapper than other species. Land-all catch rules with no minimum size limits have been applied in some fisheries in Europe and North America yet dumping continues. That is because there are powerful economic reasons to land marketable fish. Similar incentives exist within New Zealand’s Quota Management System. What’s more, MPI has had all sorts of problems effectively monitoring at-sea activity. Based on experience in New Zealand and overseas, onboard cameras and land-all catch are not the silver bullet. Another fatal flaw with MPI’s proposals is that the public won’t accept any more dead fish and quota increases based on the promise that the commercial fishing industry will lift their game and do the right thing. After 33 years of the QMS the evidence is clear. Many retail outlets already display trays of dead leatherjackets, fingerling gurnard and sea perch. It is scary to think we could soon add juvenile kingfish, tarakihi and trevally to this list. If MPI are serious about reducing waste, they would be encouraging innovative developments to avoid these small fish becoming the victims of current trawl technology.

Weigh Station The shed at our weigh station was starting to look pretty scruffy, so we have had it repainted. But after seeing some of the great murals around Waiuku we thought we would go for something a bit more colourful. It is now looking great, and will provide a terrific backdrop for some weigh in photos.

Committee At the last committee meeting dates for next years major competitions were sorted out, see diary on page 13 for the dates. We also discussed the club subscriptions for next year, but the committee only make recommendations on these, the membership sets them at our next meeting –which is on the 29th of May. We heard a report back about the juniors tournament that we sponsored a team to enter, see page 8 for more details. This was judged to have been a success and we hope to be able to run similar events in the future to encourage our junior membership.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
