Presidents Report We’re in the back end of March and the big three comps of the year are out of the way. Thanks to all who participated, either as anglers, workers or both. The Nationals is gaining popularity every year, Counties are represented well in the results and the Fish’n Chicks and Classic have just got better as they seem to do every year. Results for those comps are in this newsletter. To those on the committees, thank you for your great work. When you consider that most of those people are not only putting in months of organising and fishing the event also as well as trying to balance work and family commitments it shows just how passionate those people are about the club and the sport. Next events are the Family Day on April 14 and The Grunter Hunter on June 9 which I’m really looking forward to as the harbour has been fishing very well.
Don’t forget The Nationals Debrief is next week at the Cossie club, details also in this issue. There has been a lot of talk about the proposed Marine Centre in Glenbrook which is all tied up with the housing development at Kahawai Point but who knows how that will shape up. There is also talk of a ferry service operating on the harbour, you have probably seen the blue boat at Waiuku. The boat is not available for fishing but I understand there are plans for it to do ferry/sightseeing tours of the harbour. Mike Oldfield knows more about this than I and I’m sure he is happy to share the information he has. That’s all I’ve got this time. Michael

It all seems to be about going wide for game fish this time of year, but here’s a great harbour snapper from Arron Parker that went 5.35kg.
There were lots of great catches in the Nationals for Counties, but special mention to Claire Hull for this Marlin. Not the largest fish, but it was foul hooked and very determined not to get landed. She battled it for 6 hours 40 minutes before getting it on board –that’s determination!

You never know what you are going to come across while out for a fish. This boatie found himself rescuing the pilot of a seaplane that crashed in the Waitemata Harbour. Fortunately the pilot was not seriously injured, not sure about the plane though.

Fish N’ Chicks 2019 This was the twentieth Fish N’ Chicks competition, and it was a great event enjoyed by everyone that took part. The weather wasn’t perfect, and it was a little rough out over the West coast. But for those that braved the weather there were rewards to be had, with many tuna and even some marlin being caught. It was a bit choppy in the harbour first thing, but it soon settled down and was a great day. Plenty of fish were caught in the harbour too, as you can see from the results. Counties Classic 2019 Last weekend saw the Counties Classic, our premier competition of the year. Despite an unpromising forecast leading up to the event the weather was amazing, with plenty of opportunity to get out west over the bar during the whole competition. A lot of boats took advantage of this, and we saw a good number of both tagged and weighed billfish over the three days. A huge thank you to the Classic Committee and all their helpers, who make this event possible and all the sponsors –without their ongoing support this event simply would not happen. The Westport Many of you will remember the Westport, which was often to be seen around the Manukau on her way to or from Onehunga port carrying cement. Following the closing of Onehunga as a commercial port she was sold and moved to Europe being renamed “Fjordvik�. She ran aground last November while entering Helguvik, Iceland. She was salvaged and taken to the port of Hafnarfjordur, but the decision has now been made to scrap her. Here is a brief history of this vessel: Westport was built in Hamburg in 1976. "Her delivery voyage commenced in Hamburg on 1 February 1976, and took in the Panama Canal and Pitcairn Island, before arriving at Lyttelton on 10 March. After docking, she sailed for Westport on 18 March, thence for Onehunga four days later. From the time of her arrival to the time of Milburn's centenary twelve years later, she carried over 1.7 million tonnes of cement. During this period, NZ Cement Holdings sold her to Westport Nominees Ltd and leased her back from same, an arrangement which concluded in 1999 when Holcim acquired Milburn NZ. 22 February 2011 is a date no one in Christchurch in particular will ever forget - the date of the deadly lunchtime earthquake which forever changed the South Island's principle city. "Westport" played her part in the recovery process. She was in Lyttelton at the time, having undergone her latest dry docking, and remained in port for a further month after the quake, serving as a power source for services such as the police to use, given power was down over a substantial area.
On May 9 2016 came one of the highlights of her distinguished career, as she recorded her unprecedented 1100th visit to Onehunga, weeks before the Port's anticipated mid-year closure to freight operations." LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
