Presidents Report We’ve had a great start to The Nationals with 114 (maybe more) anglers participating. For those who don’t know about The Nationals I’ll give you a quick rundown. Participant have to fish as a team of two or more people and each club can have as many teams as they wish. The event runs over 8 days and points are given for certain species of fish. Tagged and released gamefish earn a heap of points and the amount of points given to a weighed fish depends on the line weight used and the weight of the fish. We have one team ‘From a Distance’ focusing on 1, 3 & 6kg line weights targeting snapper and kahawai. They earned our club some great points, well done Santa and crew. Most teams were targeting marlin of course and I have no idea just yet of how the club is doing but by the time you get the newsletter the results will no doubt be out. The whole idea is to compete with other clubs and Counties generally do well. I have weighed a lot of fish for people not registered for The Nationals, so please consider entering next year if you think you’re going to be fishing during that time. It’s only $25 per angler to enter and another 20 or so anglers would no doubt rocket us up through the rankings. A million thanks to those who were out the fishing for the club and congratulations to those who were successful. March is shaping up to be an exciting time with the Fish’n Chicks & Classic on the horizon. Best of luck to all those entered. A big thanks to our tireless committees too with many of them not only trying to juggle work, family & fishing the nationals but preparing a couple of the best tournaments around as well. Club meetings have been going well too, with a few more people showing up. It’s always good to catch up and meet new members so feel free to come along to our meetings. Good luck for the competitions ahead, I’m looking forward to them as much as anyone.

Mentioning no names, but if you list you address as “Waiuku, South Auckland” it’s unlikely that you are going to get your membership card sent out.

The Marlin are Here It’s that time of year again, when the phones of the weighmasters around the country start ringing more and more. Mike Baskett & Russell Dunn fishing on Chasing tail with a real nice stripey that went 127.1kg. These two had an unexpected detour in the morning taking an hour out of their day to tow a broken down boat to safety, from the South channel of the Manukau bar. Who says there's no such thing as karma. Nice to see one of our sponsors (Firstflex) getting into a good fish as well, Craig Howe with a 108.4kg fish caught off Hokianga.

Boat Capsizes
A 5.5m powerboat capsized near Grahams Beach, tipping 4 people into the water. A shore-based informant notified Coastguard Operations, who paged Titirangi and Air Patrol volunteers to assist. The person who called in the capsize had jumped in his boat to help, pulling the people out of the water just as Titirangi volunteers arrived on scene. Great work. The unfortunate boatie was dragging a scallop dredge and had made the mistake of tying it off on the port stern cleat - but had the walk-through transom opening at port stern. The dredge hooked on the bottom at the same time he applied some power, which pulled the corner down allowing choppy water to flood and overturn the boat very quickly. A hard-learned lesson from this is to ensure you have a quick-release mechanism of some sort on the dredge line, so that the line can be released if the dredge threatens your boat. All aboard had been wearing lifejackets, and while all were shaken by the experience they were all okay. More great work from our Coastguard volunteers, and well spotted by the guy who called it in.

Marlin Money Comp The weather was far from perfect for the day of the comp, but we still had around 30 boats out on the water. Fortunately the weather improved as the day went on, and there were 5 marlin caught. Three were weighed in and two tagged, on a course, fish whisperer and chasin’ tail weighed fish while lethal weapon and the tinnie tagged fish. Heaviest marlin was 128.9kg for chasin’ tail who took home $2250 while lethal weapon and the tinnie took $1125 each for their tagged fish. The quiz, held during the competition, first place hillbilly, second place asalt, third equal she5 and rehab.

Committee It was a short committee meeting this month, with the Nationals briefing following on after. With two of our biggest competitions happening next month there were final checks that everything was in place and everything is all go for the Classic and Fish ‘N Chicks. Entries for Fish ‘N Chicks has closed and we have just over 300 anglers on about 100 boats booked in. Sales for the Classic were also going well, there is still time to get an entry in for this event so grab tickets on Clubhub now if you want to enter.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
