Presidents Report What a great turnout for The Franklin Hunting & Fishing Grunter Hunter with 400 entries! Planning has already started on next years event, there are a couple of things we can tidy up and we will. In all it was an excellent end to our fishing year. Our next event is only days away and that is the Ice Breaker on 6th, 7th & 8th of July. You can fish anywhere in New Zealand as long as you’re back for weigh in. It’s always a great event. Our AGM is also on its way and that’s where we elect/re-elect our committee. If you think you have something to offer the club then by all means put your hand up at the AGM. It takes a while to get into the way things work and we’ve had great input from the new guys this year helping out at our events, working bees and being a part of the decision making process. I think it’s pretty fair to say the last year has been particularly successful for our club and we’ve had a very strong committee who plan some quality competitions. Every year brings new challenges and the turnout for our events suggests we are doing things right. Of course that only happens because our club members keep turning up to fish and that is the real key to the success of our club, the 700 odd anglers who make us who we are. So thank you to everyone who has been a part of our club but particularly to those who help plan, promote, run or assist in any way at our meetings and events. It’s an old cliché but it is true, there are far too many to mention. It’s good to be in a position where we can keep our membership fees to the same level as the previous year, while the club is in a good position financially it is important that we don’t find ourselves going backwards and while that gets harder each year, we have managed to maintain membership fees as they were last year. Prizegiving is also on its way and it would be great to see another good turnout. There have been some hotly contested trophies up for grabs and a great example of that was Barry & Scott Warrender leaving it almost to the last minute to stake their claim on the heaviest harbour snapper. They had enough of gurnard fishing at the Grunter Hunter and went snapper fishing, landing a pair of stunning harbour snapper. Barry’s went 20.5lb and is a front runner at this stage with barely over a week to go. There have been some very big fish caught this year in all categories and the leader board certainly gets a lot of attention. Congratulations to everyone who has appeared on it! Bar cameras Its been along time coming but any member of public can now access any of the 3 West Coast bar cameras for checking the state of the bar before you cross. I urge you all to use this at home prior to leaving or if your smart phone that has google chrome loaded, through that app for best results. Its very simple, just go to the website its FREE! https://go.idefigo.com Username:barcameras Password: barcameras1 Once you have registered, no it doesn't want your age or how old your children are, save the login to you device, click on the arrow top left and choose the cam you want and it will download the latest images e.g 5517 - Kawhia. you'll see small thumbnails at the base which are updated every two minutes at this stage, push play and that will scroll through the last 30mins of images. You can zoom in and out and drag the image to suit. This is still very new and upgrades are coming. If you have the time please give feedback so we can improve the service. if you see a camera not working then please inform me so I can fix it! Bits ‘n Bobs A very happy Brad Wilson shows off his 4.31kg Crayfish. He went all the way to Dusky Sounds, on the boat Flightless, to catch this beauty. But it does put him straight to the top of the leader board for Red Crayfish, and it will be pretty tough to beat before the end of the season.
Douggie entered the snapper below into the length category, just stealing the top spot on the leader board by 1cm.

Barry Warrander joined a very exclusive club when he caught this 20.6lb snapper in the harbour. But Skoti wasn’t far behind with his fish. There are some great fish coming out of the harbour at the moment, get out there if you can.

This 158.6kg Broadbill was caught by Toby Clarke fishing out from Hokianga
Thomas Boyd and Andy Verner travelled to fish off Mercury Bay to catch this Broadbill. It was worth the trip, as it tipped the scales at 192.2kg, taking the top spot on the leaderboard this month.

Grunter Hunter The annual Grunter Hunter competition took place on Sunday 10th June. This year saw a major sponsor onboard, so a big thanks to Hunting and Fishing Franklin, and it was the biggest event yet with tickets being a complete sell out. Gurnard were also in the harbour in good numbers, which made for some terrific fishing. There were so many Gurnard in the harbour that even this guy caught one. Looks like he might have brought the average weight down a bit with that one though.
The crew on Delta One seemed to get a little confused about the aim of the Grunter Hunter competition. Luckily Skoti managed to get back on target later on and landed the 5th place Gurnard. Nice snapper though .

VHF Callsigns Ever wondered what the point of having a VHF Callsign is? On 10th June Coastguard Radio was advised of a vessel left in a peculiar position in French Bay on the Manukau Harbour. The vessel had fishing rods and other gear inside indicating someone had recently been on it, so concerns were raised that their could be someone missing. The informant however was able to find the vessel name and following a quick search by the team in the Coastguard Operations Centre, we found a callsign that matched the description of the vessel. From here we had all the info we needed to get in touch with the emergency contact who confirmed all passengers were safely ashore and that the vessel had been left to be retrieved on a higher tide. It's like the number plate on your car, it uniquely identifies your boat. $45 and it's yours for a lifetime! Committee At the committee meeting this month the issue of electric reels was discussed. After a vote it was decided that for competitions and club records we would align with NZSFC/IGFA rules which state that electric reels cannot be used. This will come into effect for next years club records, as we have not been checking this year. You can apply for an exemption to this rule if you have a genuine medical reason for using an electric reel. The grunter Hunter was a great success, being a complete sell out of the 400 available tickets. After the general meeting we held a special meeting for the purpose of setting next years subs. After a discussion it was decided to leave them as they are for next year, but it was suggested that we look at possible changes next year to align membership classes more with fishing groups. This would mean child was up to 12 and junior was 12-18, to match more closely small fry and junior categories. An adjustment of the junior membership rate would probably also be needed. But this was just for discussion at this time.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
