Presidents Report It’s good to hear that snapper fishing has been good off the coast on those occasions when the conditions allow. I prefer to go out deep this time of the year but some great catches are also coming from the shallows. The harbour hasn’t been doing so well but it will soon be scallop time! I’ve heard that whitebait are about too which is great to know. Our AGM is looming large so book in August 29 for the upstairs bar in the Waiuku Cossie Club. It will kick off at 7.30pm. While we are well sorted for committee numbers we are looking for a treasurer. Kelly Muir has given the role 100% and has stepped down for this year. Kelly has done and amazing job for us and has introduced a number of things to make life easier for the next Treasurer and the committee in general. Thanks for all your work Kelly, you’ve been a wonderful asset to the club. We do need a good turnout for the AGM so please try and make this meeting. I’m sure we can manage half price drinks or something as a thank you to our club members for another successful year. Prizegiving will be on September 8th and once again it will be at the Waiuku Cossie Club. The doors will be open from 3.00pm and Prizegiving will start at 4.00pm. You don’t need to be in the running for a prize to attend of course. We had an impressive turnout last year and are expecting a similar response again. In October we will have Tony Orton as a special guest. This has been organised by Franklin Hunting & Fishing and will be held in their store. They know how to put on a great night and will have some new products from the major suppliers on display. We will be hosting The Clevedon Sport Fishing Club for our interclub challenge on October 18. These guys really look after us when they host the event so we want to put on a good spread for them this year. We are looking at holding the after match at Te Toro and are hoping for some good weather to flatten out the coast. Well that’s a pretty big calendar to start the year but we also have The Snapper Slam on November 4 so don’t forget that one. I bumped into Larry Murphy the other day (it may or may not have been at Dave & Maureen’s Liquor) and he has asked if we could advertise that he has 2 large burley mincers up for grabs. The price is certainly right so if you have a use for one let me know and I’ll put you in touch with Larry, I don’t think he wants anything for them. Max Prescott is busy sending out club membership cards but a lot are getting returned with incorrect addresses. Please make sure that when you re subscribe to the club that your postal address is very clear, complete with postcode. For example NZ Post don’t like an address such as 1 Smith Rd Franklin, Auckland. They expect to see 1 Smith Rd, RD2, Waiuku 2682 It sounds a bit niggly I know but that is what NZ Post need so you can make Max’s life easier by taking the time to use a full formal address. I think that’s all I’ve got. I look forward to catching up at the AGM.

Yamaha Life Jackets Have you bought a Yamaha life jacket this year? Yamaha inflatable lifejackets purchased from January to June 2018 may be missing their gas canisters and will not inflate when the toggle is pulled!
What to do if your jacket is affected: • Return your lifejacket to the place of purchase for a replacement product. • Always complete the pre-wear check before using your Yamaha lifejacket - including checking and confirming the canister is attached. Check Your Address Could you please check that the address you have put in ClubHub is correct, and as it is shown on the NZ Post postcode finder. For example 1 Smith Road, Franklin, Auckland, New Zealand is not a correct address, but this is what most of the entries look like. The correct address would be 1 Smith Road, RD2, Waiuku 2682 If we don’t have the correct address then your new membership card is unlikely to arrive with you.
Treasurer Wanted One of the most vital roles in any club is a good treasurer. We have been very lucky to have had an excellent treasurer for several years in Kelly Muir. But due to family commitments she is no longer able to fill this role for the club and will not be standing for re-election at the AGM in August. If you think that this is a role that you could take on then give Smudge a call and he can give you an idea of what is involved, and perhaps arrange for you to have a chat with Kelly.

Satellite Tagging of Marlin Clubs along the west coast of the North Island are looking at doing a satellite tagging campaign during the 2018/19 season. The plan is to release 6 tagged Striped Marlin along the west coast during 2018/19. Sponsors for 3 tags are confirmed, and potential sponsors for the other 3 tags are being sought. If you are potentially interested in sponsoring a tag ($4500USD) (or contributing to/sharing a tag) please email steelykiwi@gmail.com for more information.
Hunting and Fishing Event October Advanced notice of an upcoming event to be put on for Counties Sportfishing Club by Hunting and Fishing Pukekohe. They put on an evening for us earlier in the year, and it was a great success. There were lots of very informative speakers, reps from various companies to discuss their tackle, some great offers on the night and also food and drink. This event will be run on similar lines, but with Tony Orton as the main speaker. Anyone who has heard Tony speak will know that he brings a vast wealth of fishing knowledge to share and is well worth going to listen to. There will be a bus to the event the same as last time. More details in next months newsletter.

Biotoxin Alert MPI have issued an alert for the area shown on the map below for Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning which affects the following species; Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina (sea urchin) and all other bivalve shellfish. PÄ ua, crab and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut has been completely removed prior to cooking, as toxins accumulate in the gut. If the gut is not removed its contents could contaminate the meat during the cooking process. Keep watching the MPI web site https://www.mpi.govt.nz/travel-and-recreation/fishing/shellfish-biotoxin-alerts/ This alert may spread to cover the Manukau harbour as it did last year.

A Local Marina? The following is taken from the July newsletter of the Manukau Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS) http://www.mhrs.org.nz/ MHRS has been approached by the Clarkes Beach Community to determine the viability of a public jetty and small marina to be located in the protected bay with all-tide deep water behind the Clarkes Beach Yacht Club. MHRS has commissioned a planner to determine if any planning barriers could be expected in Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan process. If consent to build such a structure at Clarkes beach is granted and a small floating dock is provided at the port of Onehunga, it would allow a ferry operator to pioneer a service on the harbour. The close proximity of both the Onehunga railway station and the Onehunga bus terminal to the Port of Onehunga would provide a seamless public transport connection from Onehunga to the Britomart Station in downtown Auckland and better utilise the local bus services at Auckland Airport. With the growing population of Clarkes beach, Waiuku, Kingseat and Glenbrook this could be an alternative transport solution that reduces demand on the local roading network.

Prizegiving This years prizegiving will be held on Saturday 8th September in the main hall of the Cossie Club. You do not have to be a Cossie Club member to attend. Doors open at 3pm and prizegiving starts at 4pm. There will be food provided and a “happy hour� with reduced price drinks. There will also be door prizes and raffles held. When something goes wrong on a harbour or river bar, the consequences can be severe. Too often we see boaties getting into strife on harbour and river bars because they don't understand all the risks and the steps needed to mange them. While the evening won't fully equip boaties lacking the experience to tackle a bar crossing, our Raising the Bar seminar has been developed to help educate boaties interested in knowing more about crossing bars. These interactive sessions will be somewhere between 1 - 1.5 hours and be presented by a number of friendly and approachable specialists who will cover things such as: Why they are dangerous What should you consider before planning a trip What sort of equipment should you have on the boat What steps should you take to keep your vessel and crew safe Communication protocols including lodging the vital Bar Crossing report with Coastguard • Local area knowledge such as channels and leads While entry is free, a donation towards costs would be greatly appreciated. Committee At the committee meeting this month final arrangements were made for the AGM and Prizegiving. In case you have missed all the other mentions of them the AGM is on the 29th August and Prizegiving is on September the 8th. Both events will be held at Waiuku Cossie Club. It was also agreed that as well as the new trout category in the leaderboard there will also be a trout length measure category. This category was added as many trout are released.
