Presidents Report March is clearly the biggest month of the year for us with the fabulous Fish’n Chicks event on March 3 followed by the Counties Classic a couple of weeks later. Both events are going to be epic and these things don’t happen without a whole lot of work by a whole lot of people, so thanks to all those people. Thanks also to all those who support our events through sponsorship or simply by fishing them, that’s what makes them truly great.

By the time this newsletter has gone out, The Nationals will have finished. We had a huge turnout from Counties with close to 100 anglers entered. From what I’ve seen of the results so far we’re looking pretty good too with a lot of fish caught. I guess we’ll know the results soon enough. Thanks to all those who fished it, I hope you enjoyed it. We’ve had to change venues for our meetings due to some changes at The Kentish. Their restaurant has moved into the Portside bar, which has left us short of space for our meetings. It’s been great being based at the Kentish Hotel over the years and it’s good to see this Waiuku icon still prospering. Their restaurant serves a very nice meal too. We are now going to be holding our meetings in the Waiuku Cosmopolitan club and they are very happy to have us back I’m sure. It’s always an interesting job weighing fish for happy anglers, you get to see their setups, rigs etc and there are always some cool stories to be heard. One thing that has really stood out to me is the number of successful boats using light gauge hooks. There’s almost always a dredge sitting on the deck too. While the skinny hooks have their share of haters there seems no denying their ability to sink into the hard bill or jaws of a marlin. I think the hook up rate outweighs the risk of a hook straightening out. However, I’m sure that debate will rage on forever. Let’s hope we get some settled weather ahead of us to make the most of our premiere events. Wetmaps Every now and then I come across a new web site that is too good not to share, and this month the web site I came across was Wetmaps. It can be found at www.Wetmaps.co.nz While what it does is not amazingly clever or revolutionary it does combine several sets of data in one convenient place and make accessing them extremely easy. When you go to the web site you will be greeted with a map of the whole of New Zealand, made up from LINZ marine charts. As you zoom in to an area the individual higher scale maps that are available come up on screen automatically and allow you to zoom in to much greater detail. This would be pretty handy in itself, but this web site doesnâ€™t stop there. Using the icon in the top right hand corner you can select to view the map as street, terrain, satellite, Navionics marine chart, Navionics sonar marine chart as well as the LINZ marine charts. This is such a great resource that Iâ€™m sure it will find its way onto your favourites list.

Tagged Fish Board For anyone who tags and releases a fish that would like a photo to record the event we have ordered a new board, very similar to the current board that is used to record a weigh in. You can contact a weighmaster and get your photo taken with the details on the board at Te Toro, next to your boat. As we obviously donâ€™t need the fish for these photoâ€™s it can be done at a later time if that is more convenient. Contact Steve Watts if you want to organise a photo.

Small Fry At the last committee meeting it was decided that we should split the current junior category into two sections. This is to give some of our younger fishers a fairer chance of winning their section. From now on the under 12â€™s who weigh a fish will be in the Small Fry category, while the 12-16 year olds will be in the Junior category. This is not a new membership category, just a new category for weighed fish. Obviously as these are new categories there are not yet any trophies for this section, so we will be awarding certificates at prizegiving. We hope that over time trophies will be donated for this category. If you would like to donate a trophy, or know someone who might like to, then have a chat with Steve Watts.

Marlin Money Comp Sunday 4th February saw the annual Marlin Money Competition. Although the weather wasnâ€™t ideal it did improve during the day, and 31 boats took part in the competition giving a prize pool of $3100. This was split 50/50 between heaviest caught and most tagged fish. There was only one fish weighed in at 94.6kg, and that was by Snowdrop, which meant they went home with $1550 in their pocket. That should help buy a new rod, as they snapped theirs while bringing this fish in.

Two boats both tagged one marlin each, sharing the $1550 between them so both going home with $775 more then they had at the start of the day. LAW 2 and Teen A Tuna were the boats that tagged marlin.

Dion Watts with the tagged marlin on LAW 2. There was also a quiz run throughout the day on the VHF which was won by Bill Rash, with She5 second and Kylee coming third. Sverdfisk lures donated 8 rigged lures, which were given away in lucky draws. There were also some $100 lucky draws.

Crayfish Crisis Our crayfish are in crisis. A review is happening now, and LegaSea needs you to take action. Four crayfish areas are under review and the most serious is CRA 2, which is at an all-time low. We have compiled a short survey to better understand your experiences when potting or diving for crays in CRA 2, which stretches from Te Arai Point in the north through the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Plenty down to East Cape.

Take the Survey Your feedback is important Last year, our collective action resulted in a Ministerial decision to review CRA 2 a year earlier and here we are. Even if you don't pot or dive for crayfish your response to our survey is important, because we all have an interest in having healthy crayfish populations and a vibrant marine ecosystem to pass on to future generations. This is our chance to express ourselves and influence change. Let's do it.

Take the Survey How will this have an impact? All indications are pointing to the need for meaningful catch reductions, or even closure, so the CRA 2 fishery rebuilds in a reasonable timeframe. The Minister of Fisheries, Stuart Nash, will soon be considering new catch limits for CRA 2 and three other areas. This will be a difficult process for Nash given the unrelenting pressure to make the smallest cuts to CRA 2 commercial catch limits and maintain crayfish exports, with 90% going straight to China. We need to assure the Minister that he has public support to make more precautionary decisions by April 1st, so our crayfish populations can be restored to abundant levels. This is where you come in. As recreational fishers we want to be at the forefront of promoting precautionary management decisions in the interests of leaving sufficient abundance for our kids and theirs. Venue Change As you may have seen we are changing the venue for our club meetings. With the Portside Bar in the Kentish being turned into a permanent restaurant it was no longer available to us to use. There was not really any other suitable space available in the Kentish, so we have moved to the Cossie club. We will be using the downstairs bar for our general meetings, and for larger events like prizegiving or guest speakers we can use the upstairs room. They will also be making some wall space available for us to put up our leader board. To attend CSFC club meetings you will not have to be a Cossie club member, and as currently our meetings are open to CSFC members and their guests. You could arrive early and take advantage of the restaurant and grab a bit to eat, the menu is here.

Duckboat Derby The annual Waiuku Duckboat Derby will be held on the 4th of March this year. Organised each year by the Franklin Young Mariners as a fundraising event. Each of the competing teams uses an identical boat, a flat bottomed duck shooting type boat. The boats are rowed by a team of four, and this year Counties Sport Fishing Club have entered a team. It is a light hearted event, with prizes for best dressed team as well as winning team.

Fishing Reports As you can imagine most of these reports are at least two weeks old by the time you read them, for up to date fishing reports and news like & follow us on facebook, Its a great way to stay up to date with what is going on.

WEST COAST By the time you read this the last bits of tropical cyclone Gita should finally be behind us and the weekend is looking great for a trip over the bar. Skipjack and albacore tuna have arrived in good numbers, along with the marlin that feed on them. Lots coming in from around the 100m mark, but watch for sign on the way out and donâ€™t rush straight out to 100m. It can pay to put your lures in before then. MANUKAU HARBOUR The red weed is unfortunately still being a problem at times. If it gets too bad all you can do is move somewhere else, areas with less current can be worth trying. This time of year the small snapper can be a problem. Keep your hooks big and move if you still keep hooking them. Trying jigs can work too, as they seem to get to the bigger fish better then bait sometimes. EAST COAST Thereâ€™s plenty of snapper in close now, in the Waitamata harbour and the gulf. Kingfish action can be found on pins around the gulf, with some good sized fish being caught. Tuna can be found out wide, around little Barrier and further out.

IGFA Fishing Contest The IGFA are running a worldwide fishing contest, from October 1st 2017 through to September 1st 2018. Obviously not all the 74 species are available here in NZ, but some are. For full details see their web site;

Big Blue Not everyone was taking part in the marlin Money Comp on Sunday 4th Feb. Daniel Coll, fishing on No Limits, was down at Raglan that day. He’s probably very pleased that he was, as he landed this 243.6kg blue marlin. The crew on Snowdrop were probably quite relieved that this was caught in Raglan, and not in the competition.

Nationals 2018 As you read this the nationals for 2018 will just be coming to a close. Obviously we don’t have any results yet, we’ll bring you those next month. But we do have some photos of some of the early action.

Proving it’s not all about big game fish Chris Walsh caught this 6.95kg snapper on 4kg line.

A couple of fish for Hillbilly, one weighed and one tagged.

A great 10:1 catch for Todd Collins, but unfortunately not eligible for points due to the leader length being too long. Do check the regulations carefully, especially if fishing different line classes to usual. You can only have a 15â€™ leader on 10kg line class. 20

Ian Wildman travelled to Mercury Bay to tag a striped marlin, while mark Wyatt stayed at home and got to christen the new Counties tag and release board.

Waihau Bay provided some early action for Bert Duncan with a 58.7kg yellow fin and Douggie with a 107.8kg striped marlin.

It was worth the trip to Tutukaka for team Kylee and Afternoon delight. Word is there will be a few more from that area for Counties boats, well done everyone.

Committee At the committee meeting we discussed an idea suggested last month and it was agreed that we will split the junior category into two sections. From now under 12 years old will be “small fry” and 12-16 will be juniors. Next months committee meeting will be brought forward from the usual second Wednesday to the first Wednesday, due to the second Wednesday being just before the Counties Classic.

The main discussion point this month was the location for our meetings. With the Portside bar no longer being available we are somewhat limited as to where we can meet at the Kentish. The Nationals briefing was supposed to be held in the old restaurant, but we ended up spilling into the bar and then completely taking that over. Fortunately it was a quiet Monday, but that would not usually be possible to do. Douggie and Nils have had discussions with the Cossie club, who have offered us the use of their facilities for club meetings. For general meetings we can use the lower bar, and for larger events such as prizegiving and guest speakers we can use the upstairs function room. They also offered us a section of wall to mount our leader board. It was unanimously agreed that moving venue to the Cossie club would be best for the club

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
