Presidents Report I have just read through the Leaderboard results, there are some really good fish there. It’s great to see people competing so strongly. There’s hardly a category where you can think that would be an easy one to beat and it’s just as well because the fishing year is as good as done. What a great excuse to get out on The Ice Breaker and start it all again! If you haven’t fished The Ice Breaker before you’re missing out on a really cool event – literally – because it will be really cold, like it is during winter. It certainly caters for the keen anglers and every year some fantastic fish are caught. You won’t be disappointed with the prizes but I doubt too many will be tempted to jump overboard and swim around looking for crays. There’s always that one guy though and good on those who are brave enough to take the plunge. I was really impressed with the turnout for The Grunter Hunter and am very grateful to our Sponsors Franklin Hunting & Fishing and Shimano NZ for enabling us to put on another solid contest. There were 429 entries and despite that there were very few problems at the ramp on the day. We had anglers from Stratford, Taupo, Mokau, Whakatane, Tauranga, Hamilton and even Pukekohe! Thanks to the committee, weighmasters and all the others who pitched in to help on the day. As always there is something to improve on and the committee are confident we can deliver an even better event next year. We have some very important non fishing club events coming up soon. The July Club Meeting on the 31st, the AGM on August 28th and the Prizegiving on September 14th are all things that I encourage you to attend.
Maui dolphins are back in the spotlight too and MPI are considering a number of measures to protect the estimated 63 remaining dolphins. Restrictions on commercial netting are at the forefront and we are talking with other west coast clubs about possible changes that recreational anglers can make to assist. When it comes to conservation of fish stocks and protection of marine mammals, recreational anglers do have a part to play. It worries me though, that so many recs are continually bashing the commercial sector when the reality is that most commercials are acting very responsibly. Remember the talk we had with TK a year or more ago at The Kentish? He gave us an insight into the realities of commercial fishing that many recreational anglers just don’t get. Outside of fishing clubs and a few serious anglers the general fishing public have little idea of fishing regulations and conservation measures. The big problem we are faced with is that there are so many recreational fishers all with different ideas, pulling in different directions and bashing each other on social media. We have no common direction and we leave ourselves wide open to be walked all over by MPI. LegaSea do have a high profile and I believe they are our best choice when it comes to looking after us. I guess the point I’m really trying to make is sometimes there needs to be a little give and take but then there are times we need to dig in and hold strong. I’m not sure that as an entity, recreational anglers are unified enough to really look after ourselves. Food for thought. Take care, Michael Parker.

Bits & Bobs Port Bar markers Here are some important notes on the port bar markers from Harbourmaster Toby Kemp. The red channel marker has shifted at the entrance to the port bar. Its actually in a good position to help boats miss the south spit, which I know a few members have done. The bottom red lead light is not working and waiting for a new 3mile light to arrive so please navigate with caution at night.

Fishing & Adventure Kids Club WE'RE STO KE D TO ANNO U N CE THE STA RT O F O UR VE RY O WN KI DS CL UB.
At Fishing & Adventure we're all about encouraging kids to get outside, put down their devices and challenge themselves along the way. The Kids Club is a 6 month activity based group where Scott & Mig will present a monthly "challenge" to complete. The Kids Club offers direct access to Scott and Mig with regular interaction through a closed Facebook group and email in which members can share the challenges they have completed, can ask questions and win spot prizes along the way. Each member that signs up receives a welcome package which includes a Kids Club Activity Booklet, F&A Hat and a Sticker Pack. To keep the excitement and anticipation going, a parcel will arrive each month in the mail which aligns with a challenge in the booklet. There's a one-off registration fee of $27.99 which includes the welcome pack plus five monthly challenge packs, spot prizes and more. Perfect for kids ages 5-12. Westport You may remember we told you about the fate of the Westport in a previous newsletter. She is now being dismantled in a shipyard in Ghent. As you can see from the photo the mast, forecastle, crane, cargo hold housing, funnel, lifeboats and engine room housing have all been removed, and work has begun on the stern, the first level of which has been removed. By the time you read this she will probably be no more. I’m sure many of you remember her crossing the harbour on one of her many trips to Onehunga.
Newsletter news This edition of our newsletter marks the end of an era, as it is the last one that we will be distributing any paper copies of. As from the start of the new club year next month we will only have an electronic newsletter. However we are planning to update this from the current format. As you know we currently email out a pdf copy of the newsletter, but to make it easier to access the newsletter we will be moving to an online platform. It will be possible to view the newsletter on any device that can connect to the internet. You will be able to download it to read offline if you prefer, and you can also print yourself a hard copy. As well as making it easier to access this should also allow us to improve the picture quality, and you will be able to choose the quality you view depending on connection speed. We will email details of how to view the newsletter to you next month if everything goes to plan.
Mark Franklin travelled to Mercury Bay for this 10.03 kg Snapper. A nice Broadbill, weighed in at Te Toro recently. Well done to the crew on Warpath. 8
Aaron Richardson has been out in the harbour, catching some really nice snapper. Here’s what he said about it; Had a great couple of hours on the harbour. Banged 7 snapper ranging from 3.5lb to 18lb, with a couple of 7 lbers thrown in. Also had a couple of other big fish on that I handed to my daughter to catch but she dropped them. One felt as big as the 18lber if not better. What's interesting is I fished the exact same spot, using the same bait, rods, rigs etc a week later and caught
Mars has also been out in the harbour, and had a good days fishing. He made an unusual discovery back at Te Toro. It was a little too large to pull in on 10kg line though, in fact it took the police and a recovery truck to deal with this. Sadly this seems to be the result of a stolen vehicle being dumped. A terrible waste of a previously perfectly good truck.

Maui Dolphins
We received a request from Bridgette Rademakers, a Marine Ranger with the Department of Conservation. She wanted us to share details of the sightings hotline with you. Maui dolphins are currently estimated to only have 55 individuals left, therefore it is crucial that we find out as much as we can about them as fast as we can. In order for us to do this we need water users help. Right now we have a good understanding of their summer time habitats and the areas that they are occupying (predominantly in near shore, shallow waters <20m, along the west coast of the North Island, with a hot spot between Manukau Harbour and Port Waikato), however their winter whereabouts is a bit more elusive. “Out enjoying the west coast waters this winter? Keep an eye out for Maui dolphins and their distinctive rounded fin. With your help DOC can figure out where these guys go in winter and have more effective protection measures. If you do sight them take note of how many and where you have seen them and report it to DOC. Your help may mean more friendly Maui encounters in the future!� People can report sightings by either calling the DOC Hotline (08000 DOC HOT) or online via our website www.doc.govt.nz/helpmaui. There is also an app that people can use too Hector's Dolphin SIghtings app. Maui dolphins are easily identifiable from other dolphins due to their small size and rounded fin, no other dolphin in NZ waters has a rounded fin.

Club Logo
We have had our current club logo for a very long time, and we would like to update it with a new one. We are hoping that somewhere amongst our members there may be someone who could come up with a new logo for us. If someone comes up with a logo that we use there will be a prize, we are not quite sure what it will be yet –but it will definitely be worthwhile. The logo needs to represent the club, so think about the fish we target, being based on the West Coast, trailer boat game fishing, and anything else you think represents Counties. For it to work as a logo it needs to be relatively simple, otherwise we won’t be able to embroider it onto garments –so no photographs. Apart from that you can do pretty well anything you like.
We will accept entries in just about any format, the absolute ideal would be a vector based computer graphic file. But don’t be put of having a go even if all you have is a bit of paper and a pencil –we can get it put onto computer quite easily.

Grunter Hunter Despite blowing a gale right up to the official midnight start, yet again the weather for the Grunter Hunter was great -you must tell us how you do this Smudge. This event just seems to get bigger and better year on year. This year saw over 400 competitors, travelling from as far afield as Tauranga, Whakatane, Mokau & Stratford to take part. There were some great fish caught this year, and you had to have a fish over a kilo to be in the top twenty. Here are the results;

Committee At the last committee meeting there was an initial review of the Grunter Hunter competition. It was a great success, with over 400 anglers taking part and some travelling from a considerable distance to take part. The club logo was also discussed. We have had our current logo for many years, and the committee feel it is time for an update. The current logo was designed by a club member, and we would like to see if any current members would like to have a go at designing a replacement. See the competition in this newsletter.

LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
