nd still the sun shines, but now with mist and some freaky floods that have left some cities and towns with some major cleaning up to do. We wish all those who fell victim to this all the best for a speedy recovery. Even though there has been much unrest with the exhausted Brexit saga, we are marching onwards and upwards into the Autumn season, as there is still lots happening for both tourists and visitors to enjoy. We have been out and about again to catch some of the action on camera: lots of ladies still lunch, Romerias and Ferias have been in full swing, and the start of the golfing season brings budding golfers to our courses. Sunshine Golf have attracted not just the men to browse instore, but the ladies out there are really coming into their own on the golf courses and getting kitted out for play. So watch out you guys out there, you may meet your match! October is also a month to regenerate your beauty, so why not treat yourself to some post summer natural beauty treatments, see what London & Co have this season and be pampered! And when you are beautiful and refreshed, you may well stand out in the crowds that are preparing for Halloween. Some of the towns and villages will be alive with festivities to entertain both young and old, so watch out for kids who just love to trick or treat. So enjoy October in whatever theme you prefer, maybe try out some of our seasonal recipes too, as now we are hoping for cooler times. We love the sun, but the Autumn brings a new spin on lifestyle and different ways to spend our days away from the beach. Have a great month, we hope to see you out and about there!

I
was invited by the British Embassy in Madrid to meet Stephen Barclay (Secretary of State for Exiting the EU) on 19 September. Armed with my own and members’ questions, after a very early start, I arrived at the Embassy and met the other 6 attendees. In the first instance, we thanked Stephen Barclay for actually coming to see us and thanked the Embassy for arranging and enabling the visit. We said it was a shame his predecessors had not made the trip because we feel totally abandoned. Many of us were unable to vote in the 2016 Referendum because we had lived out of the UK for more than 15 years so already felt disenfranchised and with still no sign of that promised vote for life, we feel further neglected. He apologised but said he is very concerned for us in the EU as he has family in Luxembourg and knows how worrying it is for us all. We said that with just 42 days to go till 31 October, if we do leave then, we are not happy and some, who are already ill, are making their conditions worse wth the worry of it all and some are even being treated now for depression. Brexit is cruel. At this point I asked if the UK had put in place a repatriation/compensation programme because many will have to leave if our citizens’ rights are not protected. He replied that there is no such programme because our rights will be protected. I said we need to see that in writing because to date, Spain and the EU, seem unaware of it. He said that there is a deal being prepared. I replied that with just until the end of next month to ‘get ready for Brexit’ we need to know what our rights will be because many will have to make some considerable and unwanted changes to their lives. I added that I had joked that I should like to charter a few planes and land the UK pensioners en masse in Heathrow and say ‘here we are, your British citizens have returned and some of us need 24/7 residential care, others need ongoing medical treatment, many have nowhere to live, but we are here.’ He said that the UK realises the importance and economical value of keeping us here and to continue 2
honouring the S1 and that was their intention. I reminded him that Boris had referred to the deal as being just a ‘germ of a deal’ and he was asked if the new deal is, in fact, new or just Mrs May’s 3 times already declined deal. He said it is Mrs May’s deal minus the Irish backstop and added that he had voted 3 times in favour of it too and he will continue to vote for it. Also present was the newly appointed British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, who confirmed that the UK does want to protect our rights and that the text of the deal that the UK is going to put forward is being written. I pointed out that rather contradicts Boris’ ‘do or die’ leave on 31 October with or without a deal. Mr Barclay said their preference was to leave with a deal and that was their intention. My VP and I said that the buzz word of the day seemed to be ‘intention’ and, whilst honourable, it did not guarantee anything and we need our rights ringfenced, why is that so difficult? Mr Barclay then said that it is the EU that will not ring-fence our rights. We raised our eyebrows and he continued by asking why we didn’t choose to believe him. We said that all the hype and press reports rather put the EU on a betterfooting and that Michel Barnier had said that the UK has yet to present a deal. I said that Guy Verhofstadt tells me that the EU has always wanted to protect our rights. Mr Barclay, somewhat angry, asked again why we didn’t believe him. I said because the EU commmunicates with us and the UK does not and on 17 August I had even sent him an email that he still hasn’t answered. He joked that he had gone one step further and come in person to answer me! (I should have reminded him that he still wasn’t answering any questions!) The annual increase of pensions and their aggregation was discussed. He said he realised the recent 3 year guarantee for the annual increment was not really as much as we wanted (it was pointed out that the UK pension is not an EU competence) but he said that the UK’s intention (that word again!) was to review it in 3 year’s time. It was intimated that this is yet another example of us being used as bargaining chips. He insisted the UK had initially proposed an agreement to Spain back in December and Spain’s Royal Decree of March was in response to that. We said we found that odd since Spain had stated quite clearly that the UK had to reciprocate the offer within 2 months of leaving the EU and we were unaware that it had been done. I mentioned the 6,000 Brits that cross the border daily to work in Gibraltar and asked what plans had been made for
them. He said it was the UK’s intention to discuss that and would ensure this was raised back in the UK. I also mentioned freedom of movement and those elderly/infirm relatives who might need to come here to be cared for by a resident family member and vice-versa. He also promised to raise this subject. We insisted again that we need to see the Royal Decree agreed and in writing because until then we had little faith in the UK and their concern for us. Mr Barclay couldn’t seem to comprehend why we doubted the UK government. I reminded him that in 2016 Boris had said that the Vienna Convention would protect the British in Europe after Brexit so what had changed? My VP said that to return to his question asking why we don’t trust the UK government, he might be so bold as to suggest that the pleasantries stop and they start speaking the truth and then we might start to believe them. Mr Barclay said that what the press puts out is not his fault. I said I can understand that but their press secretary needs to start publishing facts and not platitudes. He said he had been in Luxembourg with Boris to meet Barnier and reflected on what had happened there with the Luxembourg PM. He repeated that if we leave on 31 October with no deal, it will not be through lack of trying for a deal. We asked again if, on leaving, deal or no deal, our rights will be guaranteed and just wanted to hear a simple yes or no. Needless to say the reply was not that simple but ‘it is our intention to strike a deal that satisfies everybody’s needs’ caused us to raise our eyebrows again. He said the UK and Spain are hopeful for a satisfactory outcome. He said he had been in Cyprus yesterday and will be visiting other EU countries next week. He added that David Frost, Boris’ Europe Advisor, and his team had been in Brussels this week in technical talks and he was convinced that we can do a deal before 31 October but, on that date, if the EU will not bend, we will be leaving deal or no deal. I went to the meeting without too many expectations - I didn’t leave disappointed! Fast forward to Monday 23 September and the government’s announcement that, in the event of a no deal, British pensioners living in the EU would only be able to access state healthcare for 6 months after Brexit threw every pensioner into panic. We requested clarification and later that day received the information that the announcement had tried to encompass every EU country but, of course, Spain has offered a special deal and Brits will be able to access healthcare until 31 December 2020. Not exactly what we
want but certainly better than just 6 months and the promise that they will be negotiating to try to continue it thereafter. Then on Tuesday that surprise judgement unanimously agreed by the 11 supreme judges that prorogation of parliament had been unlawful so Boris flew home from the United Nations assembly in New York to face the criticism as the MPs returned to work on Wednesday but the behaviour displayed in the House of Commons was despicable. To think that the British MPs can stoop so low as to insult each other and allow their temper tantrums to lead them to rant and rave seemingly without control of their volume switch was embarrassing to watch. What will the rest of the month hold for us? A big demonstration is organised for 19 October in London but Brexit demos have failed to reap any rewards to date. If a deal is not forthcoming before 19 October then Boris has to go to the EU, cap in hand, and ask for a third extension although he has said he will not ask for it so that could lead to a vote of no confidence or a general election or another prorogation or revocation of Article 50 or leaving on 31 October without a deal. With only 31 days to go before the scheduled Brexit date the UK parliament is in crisis and

Residency after Brexit If the UK leaves the EU with a deal, any UK national arriving in Spain before the end of the implementation period will be able to register as resident in Spain under the current rules, and will have their right to residence in Spain protected for as long as they remain living here. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, any UK national residing in Spain before the date the UK leaves will be considered legally resident for a period of 21 months, irrespective of whether they currently hold a residency document. In some parts of Spain, UK nationals are currently unable to register as a resident as appointments are not available. If you don’t yet have a residence certificate, the residency advice on the Moncloa website is to make sure you have proof you were living here before Brexit (such as padrón registration or a rental contract), and to keep checking the online appointment system for new appointments. After Brexit, in any scenario, you will need to change your registration document for a new card.

nvironmental association Mi Moana has been created to protect the ocean. They have committed to organize one beach clean-up per month and go into schools throughout the Costa del Sol to educate the next generation and help them reduce their impact on their environment. Specsavers Ópticas in Fuengirola has agreed to sponsor Mi

Moana for the year and attended their beach clean-up as part of International Coastal Clean-Up Day. Store Director Amrik Sappal commented, “Specsavers Ópticas is committed to protecting the environment. We stopped using plastic bags in store last year and help our customers to recycle their old glasses and put them to good use by collecting unwanted glasses for the Lions Club across all our stores. Now, we are lending our support to Mi Moana, as we have been impressed by the education programme and beach clean events which Natasha Wegloop and her team are undertaking. Our team was delighted to attend the first beach clean up together on the 21st of September with over 100 other people and we will be supporting future events and minimising our waste and

SHEILA’S COMING OUT by Sue Cross
F
ay had just about had enough of politics. Having watched the news all morning, she decided to clear her head by taking a walk in the park. It did not matter that rain clouds were gathering she would take an umbrella and hope for the best. Head down to reduce the buffeting of the wind, she strode out, oblivious to her surroundings; such was her preoccupation with current affairs. As she neared the duck pond, she was surprised to hear her name being called out and so she swung round to see her old school friend, Sheila Abbot, running towards her, a large grin lighting up her face. “Hi Fay! What a nice surprise.” “Well. It must be years. How are you?” “I’m fine, thanks. Just thought I’d cut through the park on my way to town.” It had started to rain and a clap of thunder echoed in the distance. Fay noticed that Sheila’s hair was cut short and she was devoid of makeup. She was not dressed appropriately for the inclement weather but looked fit and sporty in a pair of cropped trousers and a tee shirt, which bore the slogan, ‘I’m Out.’ Fay was taken aback. She had always thought of her friend as a tomboy but had not considered her to be gay. It must have been a difficult decision for her to come out, as she hailed from a strict Methodist family. Fay admired her courage but felt slightly ill at ease, not knowing whether to broach the subject or not. “I know what you must be thinking but I’m proud of my decision,” Sheila ventured. She thrust her chest out as if to prove her point. “You must be. I – I didn’t know. Well, we all had a girl crush on the history teacher, but…this weather’s awful. Shall we go to the coffee place over there and get out of this rain? Do you have time?” 8
“All the time in the world. We have some catching up to do.” They hurried over to the coffee shop, sharing Fay’s umbrella and laughing like teenagers even though it was a good ten years since they had left their boarding school. In spite of their good humour, Fay felt uncomfortable to be in such close proximity to her old friend and was relieved when they reached the café. They ordered coffee and settled down at a red metal table. A pretty waitress wearing a tight miniskirt served them and Fay could not help but watch Sheila’s reaction. Did she fancy the girl, she wondered. She realised that Fay was the first gay girl that she knew and chided herself for being narrow minded and petty. “So, you’re a lesbian,” Fay decided to bring up the topic rather than skirt round it. “What?” Sheila’s mouth opened and closed again like a hungry goldfish. Fay pointed to the tee shirt and wished she had not brought up the subject. “Oh. No, no. I’m as straight as a die,” she laughed, her head thrown back in abandon. “The slogan is about the referendum,” she continued, “ I voted out. What about you?” Sheila was her usual direct self. “Sorry. I jumped to conclusions. How silly of me. I mean – I should have known. I’m on politics overload. I voted remain, actually. Why on earth did you want to come out? It will be a disaster,” Fay spoke quickly, tripping over her words. “There’s been too much negativity over this issue. We need to get out before Brussels take over completely. It’s about time we made our own decisions. Haven’t you been watching the debates on TV?” Sheila’s voice rose in frustration. “Oh, I’ve listened to them all right. Boris is just a privileged Hooray Henry and as for Andrea – she’s a jumped up nobody,” Fay was beginning to think that this meeting was a bad idea. She’d heard that even close family members were falling out over recent events. “How can you say that? I thought they faired well in the debates and fielded the unfair, personal criticisms well. Andrea was very impressive – I can see her as Prime Minister at this rate,” Sheila sipped her tasteless coffee and took a deep, calming breath. “No way,” said Fay. “We need a Prime Minister with experience. Someone like Theresa May.” At the next table, voices were raised and the two friends listened with embarrassed curiosity as a couple exchanged heated remarks. “You Brexiters are just ignorant fools,” the man spat, his face turning the colour of a ripe strawberry.
“And you are an ostrich. A head in the sand ostrich that can’t see where this country is going. Here take some more sand to hide in!” Some ripe swear words were bandied about before the woman emptied the entire contents of a sugar bowl over her partner’s head before storming out. A flurry of leaves blew into the café along with some welcome fresh air. Fay and Sheila exchanged sheepish glances. “Let’s not fall out over this. It’s not worth it,” Fay remarked. “It will all work out in the end,” Sheila said with diplomacy. “I agree. But can I offer you a word of advice?” Sheila nodded “Get rid of the tee shirt. Fuengirola Romeria heads for Parque Esparragal
E
very year locals and visitors follow the Romeria in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary, and this year the event took place on Sunday 29th September in Parque Esparragal, Mijas Costa. Proud riders dressed in traditional attire travelled in convoys to show o their beautifully groomed horses and decorated carts. This is always an amazing sight for those who look forward to the merriment, and is also a fantastic experience to newcomers who have never seen the Romeria before. This tradition dates back to the 17th Century and is celebrated in many Spanish provinces and predominantly Andalucia. Parque Esparragal is a perfect venue to host such a large event, as additional bars are set up for the day and the extensive grounds can accommodate the horses and the festive carts. The dry river bed that sits at the side of the park is an ideal track in which the riders can show o their skills, and the various picnic areas are ideal for grand family get togethers. There are static barbecues, but are restricted for use until after the hot summer season due to ďŹ re hazards. Fuengirola TV were present as they give coverage on local TV every year, and many of the ladies were keen to dress up for the occasion and pose for the cameras. The Romeria always takes place around a week before the main Feria which takes place in Los Boliches from the 6th to 12th October. So if you missed any of the Romeria festivities in any of the towns, there may be a Feria you can catch before the end of the season, see you there!

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been recently covered extensively in the media, but what exactly is CBD ? Why is it suddenly so popular ? Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940. It is one of some 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40 % of the plant's extract. It is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana or cannabis plant. By itself it does not cause a ‘high’. According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” CBD interacts with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) and has many health benefits, from proven anti-inflammatory properties to diabetes, epilepsy and potential cancer treatments. As mentioned, CBD oil will not get you high because it does not contain a significant amount of THC or any other psychoactive compounds although it may contain a negligible trace. Supplementing with CBD enriched oil improves homeostasis and can be accurately dosed with a couple of drops under the tongue. In 2018, clinical research on cannabidiol included preliminary studies of anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain and it helps major organs to perform their functions at a higher level. Since it is a natural product, at present it is branded a ‘wellness’ or ‘food’ supplement and CBD is legal because it contains less than 0.2 % of the psychoactive ingredient THC. This strict rule is enforced in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), responsible for ensuring that any similar products, medicines and medical devices work correctly and are acceptably safe. The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) strictly adheres to these guidelines. The CBD industry is expected to be worth more than 3 billion euros globally by next year. In the UK, CBD products are sold in many stores including popular brands like Holland & Barrett. However, the biggest market, for the time being, is the US, where since the passing of 2014 Farm Bill - some US universities were legally permitted to cultivate hemp for research and development. As from 2018, the US has to import hemp seed oil and CBD oil to meet consumer demand! Meanwhile, in the EU, the industry has grown significantly since the 1970’s and EU farmers can even obtain a subsidy for hemp cultivation. It might surprise you, but France is hemp country and now the world’s number 1 producer. According to 2016 EIHA data, 17.000 ha of hemp is under cultivation in France which was more than half the total 33.000 ha for Europe. You can also find just hemp seed oils without added CBD, similar to any vegetable or olive oil but it’s the only edible oil that contains greater than 80% polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA) are found in a ratio of 3:1, which is widely believed by nutritionists to be the optimal ratio. And it also has high levels of vitamin E. This precious oil, rich in essential omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, is extracted by cold pressing. This method is not unique to hemp seed oil and similar to extracting black onion seed oil. Cold pressing requires the seeds to be de-shelled, the outer husk must be removed and then, after some scientific chilling and squeezing, hemp seed oil is extracted. Nowadays we can offer a “Super CBD oil” product because since 2016 you have these oils, are enriched with pure cannabidiol – CBD – which is extracted from the flowers. In order to achieve the highest yields and purity, most hemp CBD oil manufacturers utilize advanced supercritical CO2 extraction processes, the gentlest method of raw hemp extraction.
The amount of added CBD is measured in mg which will define the CBD % concentration for a 10 ml hemp oil bottle. The problem, as usual, is getting the right and true product, because when demand starts to exceed the offer, as unfortunately in all businesses, some will want to cut corners or essentially cheat upon customers. Internet selling doesn’t help because of real origin, quality and guarantees and, as the cost of making the real CBD product is quite high, the final product will also be costly. Many “jump on the bandwagon’ and want to have their cut, and you’ll find prices for only 10 % pure CBD concentration oils as high as 130€ and the very cheapest ones have no CBD in them at all. Some mention, for instance 20 % Hemp Seed oil, which just means hemp oil is added to another type of oil and the CBD is nowhere to be found! Welcome drinks were served on the terrace where there was also stalls displaying fashion and jewellery. A quality 3 course lunch was served including wine. Afterwards a raffle was held in the aid of 4 PAWS Adoptions. The afternoon carried on in full swing as the amazing vocals of Lindsay Rose Roberts lured ladies to the dancefloor. What more could any lady wish for! An amazing 360 Euros was raised for 4 PAWS Adoptions and Stacey Lloyd, the founder of the charity, thanked everyone who supported the cause. After most of the fun and frolicks were over, the menfolk were allowed to join in. Lions New President hosts luncheon

n a very pleasant Sunday, Valpariso Restaurant hosted the La Cala de Mijas Lions at their Presidents’ Lunch. The new President, Anita Humphreys joined the 100 guests to pre-dinner drinks and a three-course meal. Anita in an address to the guests, welcomed them to the first major event of her year in office. She continued in saying that the La Cala de Mijas Lions changes lives every day and had donated 74,827 euros to deserving causes last year. “All our members like to give something back and being a Lion enables us to do just that”. Anita gave special thanks to the sponsors, supporters and the staff at

The Safety of CBD Products
A
fter 80 years of CANNABIS prohibition, most of the modern population suffers from what is called, Cannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome. This is based on the idea that there are many diseases which are caused by a deficiency of cannabinoids in you body, and that affects the endocannabinoid system (ESC). This is the largest self-regulating system within our bodies, with receptors in our brain and central nervous system, and also in our other organs. The ESC needs the CBD to function optimally. Before the prohibition of Cannabis, the CBD would be provided in our food. It would be present in the meat, in the dairy and in the eggs, as the livestock was fed largely with hemp plants. Now as more and more people become increasingly aware of the powerful therapeutic benefits of the CBD, some products have become legal, hemp oil products have become highly sought after, and more CBD products than ever have become available on the market. But as you set out to find the right CBD product for you, it is important to remember that not all products are the same. What do we have to be aware of when buying CBD products? Not all cannabinoid products are created equal, and it is very important that you ask these very important questions: Where are the plants grown? All Cannabis plants can be used to clean up the soil from heavy pollution. Hemp has been used to clean up after Chernobyl, and several other sites that have been declared unfit for use because of heavy metals from intense industry. The plants easily absorb the contaminants in the soil, but this kind of use renders the plants useless for consumption, as they will be full of heavy metals or whatever the were supposed to clean. These plants will be used for biofuel though, so they are not wasted. Not only do we have to worry about heavy metals, the plants also absorb chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. What type and potency of cannabinoids does the product contain? Make sure your product is full spectrum. There are now 146 different canabidols that we know of, and they all play a role within our bodies. The only one that is not present in hemp is the THC. This means that consuming CBD derived from hemp, will never cause a high, or temporarily inhibit cognitive functions. Hence the nickname “ The Hippies disappointment”. The lack of THC is a requisite for the product to be legal, as by law in Europe, no CBD product may contain more than 0,2% THC. To understand why it is so important that the product must be full spectrum, you can compare it to a multivitamin tablet. Why would you ever buy a multivitamin containing only 1 or 2 vitamins, if you know you need them all? The different cannabidols work like gears. If some of them are missing, nothing really works. Another important thing to take into account is that in the pharma version of CBD [Epidolex], the information shows liver toxicity starting at 1mg per kilogram of bodyweight, or about 70mg per average adult. The information mentions elevated levels of toxic liver enzymes, and therefore it is recommended to use 50mg of CBD per day. Hence it is very important that you know the content of milligrams of CBD in the product you are going to use. When you get the answer of, “it contains x %” then ask for an analysis, and find out this question: % of what exactly? Which brings us to another question: Does the cannabinoid product undergo strict testing? As mentioned before it’s extremely important that cannabinoid products are tested for any outside contamination. Because of the plant’s identity as a bioaccumulator, toxins like microbes, mold, heavy metals, and other possible contaminants can make their way into cannabinoid products, and a it is a concentrate from the plant that is used to make CBD oil, means that if they are present, it might be in high amounts. Always ask whether an independent accredited lab has tested the cannabinoid product for safety and quality before you buy or consume it. And lastly, while most people
prefer to consume pure Cannabinoid products, some products such as edibles and tinctures, include other ingredients apart from the CBD and other natural constituents. Make sure that the added ingredients don't contain any artificial ingredients that can tamper with the balance that is designed to encourage homeostasis. So find yourself a product that is tried and tested, one that is full spectrum, and where you know the exact dose you need to take without putting a strain on your liver. Our course is in better condition than ever and every level of golfer will find it fair but challenging . The experience doesn’t end there. We have so many events, competitions, dinner dances, wine tasting evenings, live music and social get togethers , that you just won’t be able to keep up.Then there is our driving range and club professionals who are part of the newly renovated Miraflores Sports Village. Situated between the first and second holes the Village has its own restaurant and bar, beauty salon and fitness centres and golf shop. THE COURSE We are now into the third year of our course improvement plan and have reconstructed holes two and four to USGA standard. The course committee are considering one major reconstruction next year , which will be to our signature hole, the 15th. Our greenkeeping staff have also been busy on a number of summer projects designed to improve the quality of the course. RESTAURANT The Captain's Charity Gala at the Miraflores Golf Restaurant was a great success, with the members and staff enjoying a fun night, which included some great raffle prizes for the Captain's Charity, delicious food and fantastic music! On the whole a stupendous evening at the most social club on the coast! MIRAFLORES SPORTS VILLAGE The academy has been extremely busy over the summer and the restaurant theme nights are proving very popular. The Monday night three hole competition with a gin and tonic on the first tee plus wings and a drink on completion has increased in numbers every week.Visit the village for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

THE 14th TORREBLANCA RYDER CUP - 10th TO THE 13th SEPTEMBER 2019 September is the time for our major event of the year when 60 plus of us including wives and partners boarded Gloria’s big purple coach and travelled away from the Costa del Sol to play the Torreblanca Ryder Cup - The North of England versus the South of England. This year we returned to the Hotel Elba at Costa Ballena, playing golf at the Costa Ballena Ocean golf club. This is our 14th Ryder Cup with North winning 8 to 5. Last year the South won under the guidance of their new Captain Paul Winter and he was confident that he would continue the South’s winning streak, but of course the North Captain Catherine Shiels was determined to stop this. Only time would tell who would be victorious. With many new and untried members on both teams it would be difficult to predict the outcome. The teams for the two-day event were given out on the coach. Once this had been debated and digested the two team captains spent the rest of journey to Costa Ballena discussing tactics and preparing themselves for the tournaments. They didn’t really, but it sounds better than everyone enjoying the journey on the coach, swapping jokes, sampling Paul Winter´s caramel vodka and of course trying to convince the opposing players how much better they were. Once we arrived at the hotel and checked in, some of us rested. However, the more adventurous and fit members decided to play 18 holes, hoping this would give them an advantage by practising on the course, whilst those of us who were sensible spent the afternoon with a glass or two of wine around the pool at the hotel. After a superb meal in the hotel restaurant and a not so quiet night in the hotel bar, it was time for an early night in readiness for the next two days’ competition. I was joking, there was no chance of that, the story telling and jokes, plus the odd drink or two went on early into the morning. So, after a hearty and healthy breakfast the golfers headed for the first tee. The format for the first day was Fourball Matchplay on the front nine with Foursomes on the back nine. Both Captains were on the first tee to see their teams off give them a final pep talk 32
and to go through the tactics for the day. The non-golfers headed off to collect the coach for a boat trip to Cadiz. Unfortunately, this was not to be as high winds meant the boats were unable to take the trip. So armed with their credit cards they descended on the shops and market in Rota. Whilst the weather was warm and sunny as I said there was a very strong breeze, so with the course in good condition it was time for the competition to begin. It did not begin too badly for the South. The first two games were drawn. The South then won the next game. But alas after valiant efforts by the Southern team it all went downhill after that. The day ended up with a win for the North 13 games to 7. After a few drinks on the terrace of the club house it was time for us to return to the hotel to get ready for the evening party. That night the hotel had arranged for us to unwind at their beach club with a BBQ. They also arranged for a music duo to keep us entertained and dancing throughout the night. To get everyone in the party mood we again decided to have fancy dress night. The theme was “Old School Days”. What a fantastic night it turned out to be with everyone getting into the party spirit by dressing up. There were as usual some fantastic costumes. There are too many to show you here so if you want to see the many and varied costumes look on our website. After a superb and varied BBQ and tapas it was time to start the party. The superb duo keeping us all dancing late into the night and the staff kept us going with a constant supply of food and drink. It was a great night even the staff were in the party mood and dancing with us. The next day was the Singles Matchplay competition. So, as you can imagine after the party the night before there was a quite a few bleary eyes and blank stares from the golfers. Despite our condition we were raring to go and all determined to win our games. With the weather once again very sunny and warm it was time to start. For the non-golfers it was time for a leisurely breakfast as we had arranged a croquet competition later that day. The day started out well for the North. They won the first two games. The next two were drawn. So the South thought
there might be a chance. But no, the North continued to dominate. They were finally victorious on the day winning the singles 12½ to 7½. Winning the Ryder Cup by a massive 11 games. The final score was North 25½ and the South 14½. As someone was heard to remark that was close. I think he meant it was close that the South were not completely annihilated!!!!! With both games over we all relaxed on the golf club terrace with drinks and tapas watching the sun go down, it was time for the usual inquest about what went wrong. Although for a change in the North’s case what went right. There were the usual “what ifs” echoing around the terrace. Some of the players were reliving every shot and wondering what might have happened if only they had used a different club, or possibly more to the point had not had that final gin or beer the night before. However, everyone agreed it was a good three days’ fun rounded off by two great games of golf. We were joined by the non-golfers who had a great day learning and playing croquet. After a hilarious and fun time practising it was time for their competition, which was won by Jackie Milner. Well done. After another great meal in the hotel restaurant it was time for the speeches and prize giving. Everyone was pleased that my speech was very short. It was then the turn of the two captains to give their speeches reliving the two
days’ competitions and praising their team’s performance. I am pleased to say that in her speech the winning Northern team captain was very gracious to the losing Southern captain. I think not. It was then time to hand out the winners and runners up medals. With the formalities over it was party time again. The celebrations went on very late into the night, with some of us having a small drink or two, celebrating or drowning our sorrows, depending on which team you played for. The next morning with the North still celebrating, although much quieter due mainly to their sore heads, it was once again time to board our big purple coach for the journey home. On a special note, I must say a big thank you to everyone for making it another fun trip. But my biggest thanks goes to the staff at the Hotel Elba and the Costa Ballena Ocean Golf course for looking after us so well - everything was superb. The service from them was first class, they went out of their way to make sure that everything was perfect and were always smiling. Of course, not forgetting our lovely coach driver Gloria for getting us safely to and from the venue. Everybody agreed, whether their team had won or lost, it was another

Summer time was Competition time!

he agenda of Chaparral Golf Club´s summer competitions is now completed. What a programme and what a lovely summer the club has witnessed together with the players, organisers and sponsor of these fantastic events. Shotguns starts with hundreds of players; welcome presents, Picnic bags, VIP tents, catering stations and fantastic prize tables and raffles, Chaparral and their partners knows how to treat their players The first competition of the summer was the second edition of Chaparral´s Ladies Open, a Pairs Stableford competition for lady golfers on the coast. This was followed by the Open Callaway by Alleespain, this year being the third edition of the competition and with Alleespain as main sponsor, a magnificent selection of prizes of Callaway products and other golfing material. In July the Club hosted the Heineken Circuito Mediterráneo 2019 with a Heineken VIP tent , buffet, drinks and prizes. The main event of the year was the XIII Anniversary Tournament. The club didn´t spare on the details and included a draw with prizes for all 120 players. The agenda was completed with the Corporate 2019. What a day! Welcome pack with Volvo and Palladium gifts, presentation of the new models of Volvo cars and a generous VIP tent on hole 10, with gourmet products from Iberkatessen, Mahou, Solan de Cabras and Coca Cola, including top quality Spanish ham and cheese. Members corner - Interclubs Summer mix. The members of Chaparral Golf Club finished the Summer Mix League, played this summer between La Cala, El Paraíso, Atalaya, Santa María, Chaparral and Marbella Golf with a victory! After finishing in second place last year the team was happy to be back on first position again. Each match was a pleasure with all hosting Clubs offering well prepared competitions and lovely after golf. Interclub Circuit The final match of the Summer League "Circuito Interclub" between Alhaurín, Lauro, Chaparral, La Cala and Guadalhorce was played recently at Chaparral . After a great day at the club, including a three course menu and prize giving in the clubhouse, the winners of the match were the home team, and the overall prize went to Alhaurín Golf.

If you notice your dog foaming at the mouth after playing with a toad, immediately rinse it out with water. If the dog eats the toad, you should probably get it to a vet or animal hospital right away. The giant toad can grow up to eight inches long and is very heavy. This toad is greenishbrown and covered with bumps. It has glands that can secrete a very toxic poison. The Giant toad is responsible for the death of many dogs. This toad will come into gardens and eat the dogs’ food. If the dog would grab the toad it would be immediately poisoned. Pet owners might notice these signs: Frothy salivation with vigorous head shaking. Pawing at the mouth and continuous efforts to vomit. In coordination and staggering. If you know of or strongly suspect toad poisoning, immediately rinse out your pet's mouth with water before going to your veterinarian or an emergency clinic for treatment. Most toad poisonings occur in the evening or the night. Unfortunately, there are no antidotes for toad venom intoxication, but many of these victims may be saved with symptomatic treatment, which reduces the absorption of toxin and controls the clinical signs of illness. Depending upon circumstances, your veterinarian may use a variety of drugs to control heart abnormalities, breathing problems and excitation of the central nervous system. The key to survival is rapid recognition of signs and prompt veterinary medical care
The Processionary Caterpillar
Urticating hairs of the caterpillar larvae cause harmful reactions in humans and other mammals. Now the weather is beginning to warm up to its time again to warn pet owners of the dangers of the “candy floss” white nests that have appeared rapidly in the fir trees above our heads! This is the nest of the PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLAR and they arrive in their thousands!! – They are dangerous to humans too but because dogs & cats are inquisitive & like to nosey about on the ground sniffing out what’s new – that is when pets get themselves into trouble.. The caterpillars get their name because they follow each other in a “procession” actually looking quite sweet, innocent and cute; they are dark brown in colour. The caterpillars hatch from their nests and follow each other across a pathway or road making a definite line to their onward destination. It is at this point that canines and felines wander up to the “little monsters” & have a good sniff to investigate the findings – & get into trouble. If your pet comes into contact with the caterpillars it is imperative that you wash well the area & get your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible. The caterpillars are covered in thousands of tiny hairs which get hooked on the skin, mouth or nose, they imbed into pets and then literally “eat away on flesh”. Avoid exercising pets in the pine forests until the end of April.

Building of the Future Today
W
hen Man is set in his ways there is little can be done to convince him to make changes and this is particularly true to certain trades where anything new is generally frowned upon or at least looked upon with skepticism and suspicion. However, the 20th century introduced so many innovations that makes us wonder what there is left to invent in this very first century of the new millennium. Perhaps that’s why we now hear of going back to the moon, landing on Mars or even having a look into that new supposedly earth-like planet discovered a few weeks ago, “Tess”, that is a mere 30 light years distant. Let’s face it, we already have TV, telephones, and internet not to mention bullet trains, tube travel – as in the loop train (not the underground) and tourist trips to visit the moon are already on sale. Amongst those trades which are most reluctant to embrace change we have the building profession: it may even be the slowest and most reluctant of all as, in many areas, buildings still follow methods used in Roman times. Plastic was heralded as a great invention but is now a scourge because nobody saw the big picture and considered how it should be disposed of when surplus to requirements. One of today’s challenges is to find a use for these everlasting substances so that if they don’t decompose or self-destruct at least we can recycle them indefinitely lest they become a hazard to marine life or, as in the case of nuclear waste, an almost eternal danger to our planet. Plastic rawl-plugs replaced the old wooden ones but nowadays windows and doors are often fitted with fixings that screw into masonry without any rawl-plug being necessary: expanding polyester foam is a bind… great for holding this in place but also a bind if it gets on your clothing because it is destined to stay there. The discovery of polymers in the latter half of last century marked a before and after in the building trade and, although many master builders refused to accept the facts, epoxy resins are often stronger and more resistant that the concrete they are adhering to. Another discovery that dates back to the sixties is polystyrene. Yes. That white stuff that we now see every day in our lives from the polystyrene cup in the vending machine, (it takes ages to cool 40
down), the containers for our fast food that have even relegated the newspaper wrapping for our greasy and vinegary fish and chips, the protective wrappings for all our electronic gadgets, the boxes on the fishing boats for the freshly caught fish and even our beach boxes. If you just look around you it would be a surprise not to encounter something with polystyrene in it. When BASF discovered and patented EXPANDED polystyrene in the 1960’s (and called it STYROPOR) they probably did not know themselves the scope of their new product and the multiple uses it would soon develop. Polystyrene is a bi-product of the oil industry and comes in granule form, not much different in size to our fine white sugar, but when it is expanded these grains become little air bubbles that are almost weightless heating or airconditioning in all these years. In today’s world with energy costs continually escalating, the price of a kilowatt being increased, on average, four times each year any method which contributes to reducing energy costs and the carbon footprint is embraced wholeheartedly. The waterproof quality of polystyrene (lifebelts, life rafts, vending machine cups) also guarantees a dampproof result and more than a few swimming pools have been built with EPS. An added bonus, of course, is because of the comparative speed in which these houses are built the building cost is reduced and this saving should be passed on to the home-owner. Keep an eye open on your travels and you are bound to notice a few of these 21st century houses sprouting up.with respect to their volume. There was even speculation about using them to re-float the Titanic by pumping them into the sunken vessel so that when the polystyrene granules expanded under the high pressure they would displace the water in the flooded ship replacing this with polystyrene air bubbles that would enable the most famous of all transatlantic liners to be raised to the surface. After all, lots of sea-faring vessels have polystyrene ballast in their design and it is the main ingredient of practically every life-raft and lifebelt in use today. However, perhaps one of the most surprising polystyrene applications in today’s world is that which is used in building. Initially EPS (Expanded Poly Styrene) was introduced to the building trade because of its extremely high thermal insulation quality and sheets of the stuff were inserted into cavity walls to keep out the cold and make internal heating less costly and more efficient in colder climes and to do the exact
opposite in hotter climates where the battle is to keep the heat out so that we can keep our cool inside. Every walk-in freezer has polystyrene in its lining and, as yet, no other product has been discovered that is more efficient for thermal insulation. However, the arrival of EPS to the building trade did not stop at cavity-wall filling and we can now see houses being built without a single brick being used because polystyrene has made them redundant. EPS Formwork building has become so popular in the US that certain states offer tax relief for constructions that use this method. As the Americans are so fond of reducing all names to abbreviations, un the states they call it ICF construction – ICF meaning Insulated Concrete Formwork. Canada, Australia and New Zealand are also countries which have welcomed the arrival of EPS and ICF constructions and after around 10,000 houses had to be demolished in the populated Christchurch area of New Zealand when the 6·3 earthquake struck around lunchtime on 22nd of February, 2011 ICF passed the test with flying colours. The developers in that same area who had built with polystyrene had nothing more than a few roof tiles to replace. That was quite convincing! The Costa del Sol saw the first EPS houses being built around 2003/2004 but the general slump in the economy around 2010 prevented the acceptance of these new techniques in an industry that was seriously floundering. Nowadays, with the economic recovery and a resurge of construction there are many house builds in this area that are being carried out with polystyrene building systems and there are, basically, two different methods being used. One of these consists of building up the walls with hollow polystyrene building blocks that are tongue and grooved so that they connect to one another (not unlike Lego) and then their hollow cavity centres are filled with reinforced concrete and the other system is the erection of walls made out of polystyrene sheets with a fine mesh embedded on both faces which is then “rendered” with a spray-on microcement. Some prefer one over the other but each system would have to be compared side by side so that a valid opinion can be formed. (The Christchurch buildings that survived the earthquake unscathed were the hollow blocks with the reinforced concrete core). RIS A L’AMANDE Cold Danish Rice Dessert with Almonds by Benedicte Skott Introduction My first marriage was doomed from the beginning!! I married a British expatriate, whose family was from Yorkshire, father Billy being a retired Musician with a broad accent. The Christmas after the wedding I invited both my and husband’s family to Christmas Lunch, which was to be a mixture of Danish marinated herring for starters, (which I knew everyone liked) and classic English Turkey with trimmings, thanks to Delia Smith’s cookery book, wedding present from my American stepmother. Having followed Delia’s instructions carefully, I decided to throw caution to the winds and make Danish gravy, cream and all, a whole gallon of the stuff. All went well, Herrings disappeared with gusto, turkey dinner on the table, then I proudly bring in the gravy boat, trip over the carpet and watch with horror as the gravy leaves the gravy boat in slow motion, and lands right on Father-in-law Billy’s lap! It took a while for that to be forgiven. But then one evening, when Billy was alone at home with his wife in hospital, we invited him for dinner. I asked my new husband what he thought Billy might like for dessert, to which he replied Rice Pudding. For me, that meant Ris à l’Amande, so I happily bought the cheat’s canned Ambrosia Rice, (see recipe below) and prepared the dessert with all TLC of the new wife. However, my dream was shattered once again, when, upon proudly serving up the fluffy white concoction, Billy took one mouthful, and after what seemed like the longest minute in my life, came out with the immortal words, “but it’s cooooooold!!!!” Divorce happened a year later. RECIPE – Ris à l’Amande (Rice Dessert with Almonds) A classic dessert normally served after Christmas using the left over Christmas RICE PORRIDGE, which is the age-old “filler upper” for the Christmas Eve Feast, served with warm red fruit sauce or non-alcoholic dark beer OR simply a dollop of butter with sugar, BEFORE the Roast Goose or Pork. An almond is hidden in the Rice Porridge and the one who finds the almond is awarded a marzipan pig! THE RICE PORRIDGE Ingredients: ¾ litre milk 90 g rice (long or short-grained) Pinch salt METHOD Rinse the rice in cold water. Bring the milk to the boil stirring constantly. Add the rice, bring to boil and cook for approx. one hour, stirring frequently. Add pinch of salt. Allow to cool (can be prepared well in advance). CHEAT’S VERSION – Buy a tin of Ambrosia Creamed Rice or similar, and omit the sugar if necessary, or in Spanish, Arroz con Leche.
THE RIS A L’AMANDE (6 people) INGREDIENTS: 60 gr sugar 1 dessert spoon white wine or sherry 25 gr sweet almonds, chopped 2 gr bitter almonds, chopped 400 ml (4 dl) whipping cream 2 leaves gelatine (Corte Inglés)
METHOD Melt the gelatine leaves slowly in ¼ cup warm water, stir until completely dissolved. (Alternatively, use 3 gr powered gelatine, following the instructions on the packet). Stir the sugar and wine into the cold rice porridge. Add the chopped almonds. Fold in the whipped cream and then add the dissolved gelatine. PRESENTATION: A single whole almond on individual portions is nice, and the Ris à l’Amande can be served with liquid cherry sauce, or any other red fruit sauce or jam.

Chicken Liver Pate‘
T
his is an inexpensive, quick and easy pate to make that can be served as a snack or as a starter, perhaps for a dinner party. The soy sauce adds flavour without using salt, although one can season to taste at the end. This version is made in the microwave, but can quite easily be made on top of the hob, following the same steps, but in a saucepan. The microwave is ideal, because it softens the onions, which brings out the sweetness in them without browning them and avoiding any burning. Ground pepper 30 ml Soy sauce 15 ml Brandy 340 g Chicken livers 85 g Butter 30 g Butter 4 Lemon slices 1 Clove garlic, crushed 1 Onion, finely chopped Method 1. Clean the chicken livers and cut in half. Place in a small bowl with the soy sauce and leave to marinade for 30 minutes. 2. Place the 30 g butter, the garlic and onion in a large bowl. Cover and cook in the microwave for 3 - 4 minutes on full power. 3. Drain the chicken livers well and add to the softened onion and garlic and season with ground pepper. (If too much soy sauce is on the chicken livers, the pate will be too wet and won't set when cold.) Cover and continue to cook for 4 - 6 minutes at 75% power level, stirring twice during this time. 4. Stir in the Brandy and cook for a further 4 - 5 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. 5. Liquidise until smooth, check the seasoning and pour into 4 ramekin dishes. Smooth the tops. 6. Place the remaining 85 g butter in a jug and cover. Melt in the microwave at 50% power level for 2 - 3 minutes. 7. Pour the melted butter over the individual pates and place a lemon slice in the butter. Chill over night until set. Serve with hot buttered toast. 44

If you are an Eddie Murphy fan, then Netflix offer you the film “My name is Dolomite.” It´s released on 4th October and sees the warm welcome back to our screens of Mr. Murphy. He plays a brash hustler, who when Hollywood shuts him out, Rudy Ray Moore (a real life legend), a comedy and rap pioneer, proves all disbelievers in him wrong with his hilarious kung fu fighting alter ego (Dolomite). This led him to become a 1970 Blaxploitation phenomenon. The film portrays a good feel spin on the real life foulmouthed legend. After failed attempts to be famous, Rudy Ray Moore finally succeeded by combining traditional African American story telling with wall to wall dirty jokes. Although the film may not appeal to the faint hearted, Eddie Murphy still carries a charisma with his beaming smile and quick wit. For the kids or children at heart there is “The Spooky Tales of Captains Underpants: Hack-a-Ween”. This is a comedy animation which is backed to be hit with the young - a tale for the spooky season too. When Melvin tries to cancel Halloween, his clever best friends, Harold and George have their own ideas to create their own spooky holiday celebrations. n recent years, Halloween has been celebrated in Spain, especially by children whohave become fasinated with the idea of trick or treat while taking to the streets with parents hand in hand and much imaginative attire. But it was not always as popular as today in Spain as it has been in other countries, in fact Halloween was said to have originated in the Celtic areas of Britain 2,000 years ago. The word ¨Hallowe-en¨ means Saints Evening, as it comes from a Scottish term Äll Hallows Eve¨. Immirants from Scotland and Ireland brought the tradition to the United States and was soon after commercialised in the 1900s.The customes of today are thought to have been influenced by Celtic speaking countries who also had Pagan roots. This caused unrest between other religions such as Christianity. It was part of the Celts religeon that there was a way to connection with the spirit world from the living, and that at the end of Summer was the best time to do this. The Day of the Dead, in Spanish named ¨¨Dia de los Muertos¨ is of similar belief that the living world can connect with those who have past before.The holiday involved family and friends gathering to pay respect to their dead loved ones and pray to support their spiritual journey. On 1st of November the many of the Spainish folk visit graves and place flowers there to pay their respects. Note that this is a national holiday, All Saints Day ¨Todos los Santos¨. But the Halloween celebrations are ever popular on 31st October, and continue the legacy of trick or treat. Centuries ago, Pagans dressed up, lit bonfires, and they offered treats to the good ghosts. The fire and costumes were said to have warned off the evil spirits. So the custom of ¨Trick or Treat¨was born. In todays standards of Halloween celebration, anything goes as far as fancy dress, but as tradition has it, the mask is the most symbolic item. It is believed that wearing a mask would fool the evil spirits into thinking the wearer was a fellow ghost, and thus protect them from harm. Whatever you believe, this tradition is still very much alive and kicking partygoers into the month of November, the start of the Winter season! 45

alking Football was introduced to the Costa del Sol by Adam Chandler who started it as a business in May 2017 following on from the success of walking football in the UK where there are now over 1,000 clubs with organised associations. Club and international teams are taking part in European and World Walking football tournaments abroad and in the UK. Walking Football Spain has grown from having 6 original members to a membership now of over 70. In June of this year it ceased to be a business when the then owner Brian Gregory decided he had taken the club as far as he could and handed the club over to a committee. The club is now managed by an elected committee led by Chair, Kevin Narain assisted by coordinators

administering the venues. Venues are at the Polideportivo, Benalmadena Pueblo (next to the bullring) on MONDAYS from 10am to 11am. Benahavis (Near to the Grande Hotel) on Tuesdays from 7.30pm to 9pm. Estadio Santa Maria, Las Chapas, Elviria, Marbella on Thursdays from 10am to 11am. Please Note - On occasion we have to switch to another day or venue. It is best to check first at the website (see below) or facebook page before coming to a session. Walking Football is unique in that it is played at a far slower pace than normal football and the basic rules include No R u n n i n g ! ! ! N o Ta c k l i n g ! ! ! N o Aggression!!! Ball below head height and players limited to three touches of
the ball at a time. We have players of all types of skill and ability and where possible teams are selected to the different strengths and ages of the players. It is an excellent form of exercise for older people and has an age minimum of 50 years. Walking Football Spain has players ranging in age from early 50s to late 70s. The medical profession recommend it as good exercise and it has been found in many cases to have helped people who have been suffering depression or who have been living on their own as they can come and have a game and enjoy company afterwards. Sessions last for one hour with warm up exercises before, and end with refreshments in the bar after the football and an exchange of banter.
Walking Football Spain was the first club on the Costa but other clubs have sprung up and we now have regular inter club tournaments raising money for charities. WFS have raised over 5,000 euros in the past year donating to the British Heart Foundation, Prostate Cancer Research and to help our adopted sponsored donee Sarah Almagro Valleco purchase prosethic limbs. Sarah is the young Marbella girl who lost her lower arms and lower legs due to sepsis. We also have teams who come from the UK to take part in our tournaments or intermingle in our sessions and we receive invitations to play in the UK, Germany, Gibraltar and other parts of Spain. In mid October we are sending a squad to a prestigious 4 day tournament taking place in Lagos, Portugal where teams from the UK and Europe will be participating.
On Wednesday 2nd October Walking Football Spain are sending a squad of players to a walking football tournament taking place in Viñuela (Velez Malaga). Also taking part will be two teams each from Smiles WFC and T h e Wa l k i n g D e a d , b o t h f r o m Calahonda and the host club Aston Viñuela WFC. This tournament is to raise money to help a young local family who run the “Kiosk on the Corner” bar frequented by the Viñuela players. The young mother is recovering from cancer and is still receiving treatment. They have two young sons and due to the young mother´s illness it has been a difficult year for them. Viñuela, with the help of the other Walking Football clubs, hope to raise enough money to give the family a break. These tournaments have brought a “coming together” of these teams and
discussions between the teams have led to the formation of a league. This is unique and exciting as it will be the first Walking Football League in Spain. The League will be sponsored by Blue Sky Real Estate Marbella and the inaugural launch will take place at the completion of the Viñuela tournament. More details of the league and inaugural fixtures will be published in the next edition of Costa Connection Magazine. So if there are any over 50s out there who still dream of their days playing football and would like to show off their skills again, or just take part in a bit of gentle exercise come along to any of our sessions. The Age Concern Summer Concert was held this year at the Restaurant Valparaiso.

early 250 people came by car and on the coaches provided by the Charity. It was a great party, a fantastic celebration and a very successful fundraiser. A great party because every guest had a brilliant time. A fantastic celebration because the Charity has now been helping older members of the English speaking community for 5 amazing years. Where has the time gone? A successful fundraiser because we raised 2,500 euros thanks to the generosity of guests. That money will help Age Concern in their on-going fight against Loneliness and Isolation. Top of the bill were the Jersey Boys who gave a flawless performance that had everyone up on their feet dancing the afternoon away. Our support act, "Quist's" won´t be a support act for long. These teenagers stunned the audience with their vocal talent and received a well deserved standing ovation. Age Concern thank everyone involved who put in so much work behind the scenes. We are proud to have the "greatest" Team of volunteers – ever. The Charity are already planning our next Summer Concert and look forward to seeing you all again soon. Parents advised to check that poor eye sight is not holding their children back
Opticians are using the start of the new school year as an opportunity to inform parents and children of the importance of regular eye tests. At the start of term, they recommend that parents take their children to a professional who can check their vision and take the right measures to ensure that their eye sight is not holding them back. Poor vision can inhibit learning and hold them back from performing well in sports. Juan Carlos Martínez Moral, president of the General Council of Colleges of Opticians-Optometrists (CGCOO), says: ‘As vision can often change during your school career, it is important to have regular eye examinations by an optician-optometrist. By having your eyes tested at least once a year, you can rule out refractive problems such as long-sightedness, shortsightedness, or astigmatism; binocular vision abnormalities such as strabismus, or amblyopia, popularly referred to as "lazy eye".’ Amrik Sappal from Specsavers Ópticas Fuengirola agrees: ‘We have seen a high number of children needing glasses across our opticians in Spain and experts around the world are reporting a sharp increase in myopia in young children. The difficulty with children with poor eye sight is they often don’t realise there is anything wrong before it is identified in an eye test. This means they struggle unnecessarily at school and can be misdiagnosed with learning difficulties simply because of their poor vision. To avoid issues like these, we also recommend yearly eye tests for children before they go to full-time education and incorporating an eye test into the “Back to School” routine to pick up any changes early, before it starts to effect their learning.’ According to charity ONCE, they have 4,245 members aged 18 and under who are suffering from low vision or blindness and studies show that one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. Common eye conditions can all be identified with a complete eye test. The sooner that vision problems are detected, the better the outcome.
