May Fair controversy

a Feria de Sevillanas which is traditionally held in May, has been put back this year until the 10th October, it was announced by Torrevieja town hall. The townspeople of Torrevieja were eagerly awaiting the fair which usually takes place around this time of year as one of the highlights of the fiesta calendar. However, in their bid to rid the town of

illegal contracts this is another event which is, at least temporarily, suffering the consequences. Councillor for fiestas, Domingo Pérez, explained that the correct contracts could not be put into place in time for the May fair to take place during its usual slot. Administrators informed him that, at best, the contracts could not be arranged for another two months which would have taken the fair to at least the 19th June and possibly into July. The town hall has discounted staging the fair over the busy summer months when the heat would be too much for the horses and riders. With this information a meeting took place between the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, the councillor of public roads, Javier

Torrevieja subscribes to transparency agreements Torrevieja’s town council is one of several within the Valencian community that has subscribed to the Code of Good Government. The agreement was signed by the councils of Torrevieja, Albatera, Callosa de Segura, Catral, Dolores, Guardamar del Segura, Rafal, San Isidro and Jacarilla. The agreements includes a set of standards for councils to adhere to and the details of these now need to be debated within the Continued on page 5

The dates of the 10th to 15th October coincide with the bank holidays of Virgen del Pilar and this is one reason why they have been chosen. However, it is the intention that in 2018, the fair will return to its usual slot in May. By then, the process of getting the contracts out on time should be running more smoothly. Councillor Pérez explained that lack of sufficient administrators is also holding up the contracting procedures. The council are now working on ensuring that events are not held up in future. The administrative processes need to be started at least seven months in advance and contracts are now being issued for the Fiestas Patronales and the Three Kings.

Proper procedures

Since taking over at the town hall government following the elections in May 2015, the coalition government have addressed the issue of contracts awarded without following the proper procedure. This has already included hold ups and uncertainty around a number of services, including that of the lifeguards last summer. The coalition is keen to ensure

and anger in some cases. The Municipal Theatre’s closure has meant the loss of the town’s main venue for hosting performances. Now, the change of date of the Feria de Sevillanas is causing consternation and the opposition PP is leading the backlash against the coalition government. Social media sites contained many angry comments, some from people who had already booked flights to Alicante to coincide with the fair which is a highly popular tourist attraction. One disappointed traveller said;‘I have booked my flights and it is now a complete waste of money.’ Others comments came from people travelling fromother parts of Spain; ‘We are a group from San Sebastián who have been coming to the fair for the last 20 years. It’s too late to change the days we have taken as holiday and so won’t be able to attend this event.’ However, according to the coalition government, the deep clean of contracts and building licences is absolutely essential to ensure that cronyism and corruption are purged from the town. The PP are questioning why Torrevieja’s football stadium is still closed after almost a year. The party who are currently in opposition government in Torrevieja, point out that the stadium, Vicente García de Torrevieja, is not closed exactly as it has been used for training purposes by some teams. They argue that it is being used for ‘selective’ purposes and in the meantime there has been no evidence of any repairs being made. The PP claim that the decision to demolish parts of the stadium was made on the basis of a visual inspection only. The stadium was built in the 1970s and is dilapidated and in need of repair. Its closure in the summer 2016 came as a result of concerns about the condition of its grandstand and changing rooms. Neglect of the stadium goes back many years and repairs require an investment that isn’t currently available.

Tragic case at the BITE SIZE NEWS: animal shelter Continued from page 3

Councillor Carmen Morate was horrified on May 2nd when a little dog was brought to the animal shelter who had been very badly treated. ‘He came in, in such a bad condition that he had to be moved immediately to the vet,’ explained Morate. He was named ‘Rocky’ by the shelter volunteers but unfortunately he was in such a bad state that he had to be put down due to the great suffering he was already enduring.

sanidad@torrevieja.es or call the local police on 965 705 326 preferably in the morning and ask for the environmental patrol ‘la patrulla de medioambiente’. When Rocky arrived at the shelter he weighed less than two kilos had infections in both eyes, was infested with fleas and had a skin disease so that he hardly had any hair left. The photos of Rocky are being circulated in order to help identify his owner but might be distressing to some people. The councillor would like to thank the local police not only for the interest they have taken in the case but for the services they have provided.

Dangerous dogs

Since the arrival of Rocky, a police investigation has been started to find out who the owner was and Councillor Morate is asking for the collaboration of the townspeople in finding out who is responsible. ‘We want to bring a prosecution for this,’ she explained. ‘The dog had to be put down after going into a coma and the owner could be prosecuted and sent to prison for 6 to 18 months. We want to bring this person to court.’ The councillor is asking for anyone with any information to contact

Councillor Morate is very keen to encourage responsible dog ownership. The day before Rocky arrived, a young man came to the shelter to claim back his American Pit Bull. The dog was identified as being of this breed due to its chunky body and large head and is on the list of dangerous dogs. Owners of breeds such as this must hold a licence and special insurance which, in this case, the owner did not have. Neither was the animal microchipped nor had it had its vaccinations. The shelter informed the man about the documentation he must have, however, he ignored the centre staff, took the dog and left the shelter. The police were quickly informed and as their base is very close to the shelter they were able to detain the man who they located thanks to surveillance cameras. The shelter places great emphasis on ensuring that those animals that leave its care are correctly looked after and have the vaccinations and licences they need. It costs nothing to get the licence from the town hall and there is an agreement with an insurance company that helps cover the dogs who need it. ‘Last year we fined a few people,’ explains the councillor. ‘This included those whose animals repeatedly escaped. This can be dangerous not only for the animal but for car drivers too. Only last week the police fined someone €200 for this.’ Suzanne O’Connell

respective government teams. The Code of Good Governance aims to promote the development of transparent and efficient public administration.

Licencing issues at the International Marina Visitors to the International Marina in Torrevieja will have noticed that alongside the port and boat moorings there are properties located there including an aparthotel. These were originally built in the 90s during the property boom and according to a concession approved by the Valencian Government. This concession is about to expire throwing doubt on the legality of the properties which, in theory, should revert to their original use according to the law: Puertos de la Generalitat. However, Councillor Fanny Serrano has assured the home owners that there is no intention on the part of the Valencian Government to take possession and demolish their homes. It would be impossible to revert the area to previous use given the adjacent car parks and other leisure facilities. It is hoped that the legal dilemma can be addressed through other means.

Postman prosecuted for non-delivery of mail A court in Elche has been considering the case of a postman accused of failing to deliver 266 letters. The prosecutor asked for a punishment of one and a half years in prison. The letters remained undelivered between the years 2011 and 2014 when the accused was working in the post office in Torrevieja. Of the 266 letters, 174 were national communicationswith most of them being electricity bills and official mailing from banks. The postman also committed other irregularities including posting letters that needed a signature directly into post boxes. On other occasions he also signed them himself without being authorised to do so, or obtained signatures from others.

Zumba class for ALPE On 12th March Jan Harding and her Zumba Team led a Zumbathon at Lo Crispin Tavern in aid of ALPE school for disabled young people. The Zumba Crew did a class for over 60 of the children and staff at the centre and they danced, sang and didn’t stop smiling. Jan would like to say a big thank you to all those instructors taking part and all the others who came along to contribute. Altogether €500 was raised and presented to the school on the 5th May. Prince Philip to retire BITE SIZE NEWS: from royal duties The Duke of Edinburgh is to retire from royal duties, Buckingham Palace has announced. Prince Philip turns 96 next month, and has made the decision himself. He will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations.

Despite retiring from royal matters, the prince, who is involved with more than 780 organisations, will continue to be associated with them. However, he “will no longer play an active role by attending engagements”. Shortly after the news was announced, Prince Philip was on duty, and on customary form , joining the Queen at St James’s Palace for a service and lunch for the Order of Merit. When the mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah told him: “I’m sorry to hear you’re standing down,” Philip shot back: “Well I can’t stand up much longer.” Tributes to the longest-serving royal consort in British history, who will turn 96 on 10 June, followed the announcement, first made to royal staff in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace last Thursday. The Prime Minister, Theresa May, said Philip had been a “steadfast support” to the

Queen, while the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, an avowed republican, praised his “clear sense of public duty”. The Duke of Edinburgh awards, which he set up in 1956 and are now the world’s leading youth achievement awards across 141 countries, were highlighted as one of his most striking achievements. Philip, who famously describes himself as “the world’s most experienced plaque unveiler” has undertaken 22,191 solo engagements and given 5,493 speeches in almost seven decades as the Queen’s “strength and stay”. He has never taken the official title of prince consort, despite it being offered. He has one of the royal family’s busiest diaries; last year, he carried out official meetings and visits on 110 days. The Queen, whom the Philip has affectionately nicknamed “cabbage”, will attend more solo engagements or be accompanied by younger members of the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced in January they were moving from Norfolk to London, with William giving up his job as an air ambulance helicopter pilot in the summer with the intention of taking up more royal duties. Prince Philip will spend more time at Windsor during his retirement, enjoying leisure time. He is still an active carriage driver, though he no longer competes, and was seen driving his cart and horses through Windsor as recently as March. He also loves oil painting and the outdoors. His barbecues are legendary, as the former Prime Minister David Cameron attested on Twitter.

Will the new market keep its trade? The new market is due to open on Friday 12th May. A recent advert depicts a woman preparing to go to the old site, ready for the scrum. In comparison she arrives at the new site in a floral dress, steps off a bus worry-free and without the need to cover herself in war paint. There seems to be agreement that having a purpose built market area will have many benefits. However, market traders are also worried that they will lose out as some people will be unable to reach the new site as easily. It was with perhaps a mixture of sadness and relief that the area of Nueva Torrevieja held its last Friday market on the 5th July. The new site on the Avenida de Delfina Viudes spans around 80,000 square meters and has purpose built toilets, car park and improved security. But will it fulfil all the aspirations that are being held for it? There are concerns that operating in a ‘closed’

market, as the new one is, may decrease the number of sales there are. Some traders have been indicating that some of their customers will have difficult reaching the new site. However, local residents will mostly be relieved to have their streets left free of congestion on a Friday and the town council has tried hard to ensure that there are sufficient bus routes for people to reach it. The planning for the market was not a new proposal and goes back to 2011. It was inherited by the current council who have issued notification of the move to more than 650 traders. Some last minute petitions against the move were far too late to make a difference. Now, we will see whether their concerns are founded or whether the new site will turn out to be the lift to Friday trading that’s been predicted. Costa Blanca People will find out for itself and report back next week. Suzanne O’Connell

Protests against new language laws The protests against the imposition of more valenciano in classrooms at the expense of castellano and English, continues. The multilingual law was passed by the department of education and will start to be put into operation in the next school year. However, many parents, particularly in the Alicante province, are opposed to the law which relegates the traditional Spanish language of castellano in favour of the regional language of valenciano. More protests are planned to take place in May including on the 19th May in Alicante at 7pm where a march is planned from IES Jorge Juan (secondary school). Suzanne O’Connell

Orihuela Costa associations demand urgent investments The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) has urged the council to approve its 2017 budget so that the services and infrastructures needed in the area can be improved. The wrote to Mayor Emilio Bascuñana warning that if the “precarious” situation on the coast continues there will be “very serious consequences”. “We do not have the Cultural Centre that could and should have been built with the money raise from the sale of public land on the coast; more than half the parks and gardens on the coast have no kind of maintenance; our beaches are still lacking work to improve access and improve installations; residents still have to put up with a lack of communal bins in some areas; the playgrounds are still abandoned despite a council motion approved in 2015 promising to renovate them: our roads still need to be re-surfaced and have so many pot holes they look like Swiss cheese; and the collection of rubbish and recycling containers is still not done on time,” they said. Without a budget, they say, nor can such important work be carried out to prevent the damage that happens when there is torrential rain, and “garden cuttings are still in the street for days and days because the collection system is adapted to the shortcomings that the service suffers from”. FAOC explained that there should be no problem passing the budget because the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos parties have a majority in the council meetings to do it, so it “only requires the necessary diligence and interest of the local government”.

WAS A DEAF EAR TURNED TO DISCO NOISE? The investigation of irregularities surrounding the Vela Mata night club continues. This time, the chief of the Local Police in Torrevieja, Vicente Gutiérrez and a former inspector, Manuel Antonio López Vera were called to testify as to their part in the investigation of denuncias against the establishment. The case is seeking to establish whether alleged crimes at the nightclub between 2013 and 2015 were, in fact, ignored. López Vera claimed that in July 2014 when the club had been open for a year that incidents were referred to the Public Prosecutor, including that of the club breaking its capacity limit. However, the club was allowed to continue, it is claimed, and was only closed by the town hall after a denuncia from the Valencian government one year after the police investigation had begun. The witnesses explained, as reported in diario informacion, that they were not

Illness forces urgent landing A Ryanair flight heading for the Costa Brava capital of Girona from Leeds, UK, was forced to make an urgent landing in Paris at the weekend after a passenger fell ill. The aircraft had taken off from Leeds-Bradford airport at 08.25 UK time, but announced a need to land imminently as it crossed over Rouen in northern France. Minutes later, the plane touched down at Paris-Beauvais, as the passenger needed urgent medical attention. A healthcare team was waiting on the ground, having been requested in advance by the crew. It was due to arrive in Girona at 11.45, but remained on the ground for some time. Ryanair apologised for any inconvenience and ensured the flight was able to take off again at the earliest opportunity...This is the second urgent landing due to passenger ill health in a week – a flight operated by another aircraft heading to Alicante from Amsterdam sent out a 'state of emergency' signal and subsequently touched down in Paris-Orly so the patient could be given urgent medical assistance.

in a position to know if a leisure venue is abiding by the municipal laws or not. The Local Police are only in a position to intervene when it come to traffic noise and are not equipped with the knowledge to implement noise pollution laws themselves. The retired police officer claims he had put forward between three or four denuncias about the venue for continuing to function with its doors open as well as carrying out joint action with the Guardia Civil. Vicente Gutiérrez explained that in 2014 there was a meeting to discuss the

problems reported about the nightclub and this was attended by himself, representatives from the Guardia Civil and the town authorities. The community of owners of Molino Blanco, the urbanisation nearest to the disco, had been active in complaining about the venue. Community representatives had indicated that there were many problems with the nightclub including trespassing into gardens, parties on the beach and general disruption. Suzanne O’Connell

Orihuela Costa Emergency Services Centre The Councillor responsible for Emergency Services, Víctor Valverde, has given an updated report on the situation surrounding the Emergency Services Centre of Orihuela Costa. In a recent press conference the Councillor said that the government team has ‘fought to the last penny so that the project has all the budget allocated that corresponds to what is needed’. The project initially had a maximum amount of 3,030,000 euros allocated, subtracted from which was the project management and site management fees and costs for the part of the project already undertaken. The project awarded a grant of 553,696 euros, which the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, (right) has been demanding since the beginning of the Legislature, since the budget was insufficient to carry out the works required to see the Emergency Services Center up and running. After several meetings with the Generalitat, Victor Valverde said that he was now able to ‘confirm that the new award has been secured and that the project has 553,696 euros that we have been requesting for two years’. Councillor Valverde said that the City Council has carried out the modifications and updating of the project plans in order ‘to be able to accommodate as many material and human resources as possible for the numerous security forces and emergency services that will be based at the Centre’. The Emergency Center will house the Local Police, Samu ambulance service, Civil Guard and Civil Protection (Emergencies). The councillor explained that it is the local government team’s intention is that the Centre also house the fire brigade, forestry brigades, first aid service and other emergency personnel. In addition, the modifications include new areas for rest and recreation for the personnel that were not included initially but that are necessary, since

they will provide a 24 hour service. Councillor Valverde insisted that ‘all these improvements are due to the commitment of the Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and are the result of numerous meetings held with the Generalitat and the General Directorate of the Security and Emergency Response Agency’. The councilor said: “We have followed the guidelines set by the regional administration in for the modifications of the project. The Conselleria will tender the project and we urge that the procedures are fast tracked so the works are finished as soon as possible.”

General Election 2017 – Why it matters to Britons abroad!

An appeal by the Bremain in Spain campaign group When you’re busy enjoying the great lifestyle Spain has to offer, life back in the UK can seem a whole world away, and it’s easy to lose track of British current affairs – or to feel that the whole palaver simply doesn’t apply to you any longer. Perhaps you’re fully integrated into your local Spanish community and feel disconnected from politics “back home”. Or maybe you’re making the most of your well-deserved retirement, and you don’t want to spend time worrying about things that you feel you can’t change. A wish to carry on regardless is perfectly understandable – but in the current climate, it’s all the more important for British citizens resident in other European countries to get their voices heard. Thanks to the result of last year’s Brexit referendum, your very right to continue with the life you’ve shaped for

yourselves here in Spain is at risk. And General Election 2017 is your chance to have your say. Of course, it’s not another referendum on Britain’s future regarding its relationship with the EU, but it is widely accepted that the result will reflect public opinion about Brexit-related events since June last year. If you’re not happy with the current state of affairs, now is the time to say so. At Bremain in Spain, we’ve been fighting to protect your rights since immediately after the referendum. We have a committed team of dedicated individuals who collaborate with panEuropean alliances and international politicians with the aim of securing your right to remain in your host country – with all of the rights that you currently enjoy as EU citizens. As well as providing all the information you need to register and cast

your vote, we offer a Website packed with useful articles and tips, a Facebook group where you can discuss any Brexit-related issues that concern you, and even local chat groups that give you the chance to meet up with like-minded individuals who share your concerns. Want to learn more? Search for “Bremain in Spain” on Facebook, see our Website at http://www.bremaininspain.com/join -us/,or e-mail us at enquiries@bremaininspain.com. Killer chips! A British boy nearly died from allergy after eating chips cooked in used oil. The oil had previously been used to fry fish, to which the nine year old is allergic. The incident happened at an eatery in Finestrat. Two Guardia Civil agents saved the life of a 9 year old boy who had gone into anaphylactic shock, which was suffocating him because of his allergy

to fish. According to the Armed Institute, the officers were patrolling the streets for citizens’ service in the Finestrat cove, where they heard people calling for help. Inside one of the restaurants there was the nine year old boy who presented symptoms of ‘severe food poisoning and was chocking helplessly’ British, and resident of La Nucía, he

was quickly rescued by the agents who used their patrol car to rush him to the La Vila district Hospital, where he was admitted into intensive care. The following night, as a measure of courtesy the officers rang the mother of the child, who was delighted to say he had just been allowed home.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE With the French presidential election on Sunday supposedly in the bag for Emmanuel Macron - the opinion polls give him a 66/33 advantage over Marine Le Pen - the euro took advantage of a politically risk-free week. It was the top performer among the major currencies, strengthening by 1.1% against sterling and the US dollar which shared third place behind the Swiss franc. The economic data from Euroland were suitably robust: inflation accelerated to 1.9% and first quarter growth came in at a provisional 0.5%, beating Britain’s 0.3% expansion and the United States’ 0.2%. Sterling continued to enjoy the boost it received following notification of the early UK general

election. Over the last month it led the other major currencies by an average of 4.2%. Unexpectedly strong purchasing managers’ index readings allayed some of the concern that Britain’s economy might at last be feeling the Brexit heat. In the US last Friday’s provisional figures for first quarter growths were disappointing. As expected, the US Federal Reserve held back from raising interest rates. The Fed's statement did, however, keep alive investors’ expectations that rates will go up at the next policy meeting on 13 June. And at least one more increase beyond that is expected this year. That expectation could give the dollar the edge in coming weeks.

WHAT TYPE OF SAVER ARE YOU? From the conservative to the explorer, we look at five saving characters.

W

hat kind of saver am I? This should be the first question that people ask themselves when saving, yet it’s one that they rarely delve into. The reason why the question matters is because aspects such as your goals, attitude to risk and reaction to losing or making money, influence which investments are right for you. Without exploring this properly, you could end up in the wrong things. And that could mean either suffering sleepless nights from taking too much risk, or missing out on opportunities to grow your wealth. To help you understand more, we look at five different types of saver. The conservative saver

This saver is conservative with a small c. One of the most important things to this type of saver is protecting their money. The focussed saver The focussed saver is willing to take more risk than their conservative cousin, but protecting their wealth is still very important to them The driven saver The driven saver could be summed up as business like. They know what they want and like to set out a clear plan of what they will do to achieve it. The exploring saver An inquiring mind is one of the key characteristics of the exploring saver. They have taken an interest in investing and are willing to try new things to grow their wealth. The adventurous saver Optimism can often pay off in the world of investing and the adventurous saver is the kind of person willing to decide the glass is half full. No matter how you approach making your money work harder for you, expert financial help is vital. So for a free no obligation chat call us on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@seagatewealth.es

TIPS TO SAVE PUMPKIN SEEDS AND TURN GREEN PUMPKINS ORANGE. Pumpkins are grown and eaten all around the world for a variety of reasons. Out of the seven continents, only Antarctica is unable to produce pumpkins.

How to save squash, pumpkin and gourd seeds: 1. After you have cut open the pumpkin for decorations or for cooking, remove the seeds and pulp. 2. Hand separate the seeds from the pulp and rinse the seeds with cool water. 3. There will be more seeds inside the pumpkin than you will want to plant, so once you have the seeds rinsed, look at them carefully and choose the largest seeds you can find. Larger seeds will have a better chance of germinating and growing healthy, sturdy vines. 4. Transfer seeds to paper towels and blot dry. 5. Transfer seeds to baking paper or wax paper and allow to dry overnight and make sure they are spaced out otherwise the seeds will stick to one another. Pumpkin seeds are sticky and if left to dry on paper towels, the seeds will stick to the paper towels. 6. Once the seeds are nice and dry so they won´t stick, place the pumpkin seeds in a single layer on paper towels to dry further. 7. Place the seeds in a cool, dry place and continue to dry the seeds for four to six weeks. 8. Gather seeds and place in an

envelope, like a small manila envelope. Make sure to label your envelope and note the kind of pumpkin or squash and the year. Store the seeds in the envelope, keeping them cool and dry. 9. You can also store them in a jar with an anti-desiccant (those little packets of silica gel that come with new coats, shoes and purses). Note: Some hybrid varieties do not come true from seed, but you will never know until you try.

How to turn green pumpkins orange: If you live in an area with winter frost, the frost can get to your pumpkin plants and kill them while green pumpkins are still on them. This can be disappointing after an entire summer of hard work. Well no worries, just follow these steps to help turn green pumpkins orange: 1. Harvest your green pumpkins. Cut pumpkins off the vine and leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) of vine on each top for a handle. 2. Clean your pumpkins to avoid rot and mold. Carefully wash any dirt off, dry them, and then wipe them down with a diluted bleach solution. 3. Put the pumpkins in a dry, warm,

sunny location. Pumpkins need sunlight and warmth to turn orange and to avoid rot. 4. Place the green side of the pumpkins towards the sunlight. Rotate the pumpkins from time to time to allow the sunlight to reach the greener parts. Continue to rotate the pumpkins evenly for an even change to orange. Note: This process may take a week or up to several weeks depending upon how green your pumpkins are.

Culinary use: Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are flat, dark green seeds. Some are encased in a yellow-white husk, although some varieties of pumpkins produce seeds without shells. Subtly sweet and nutty with a soft, chewy texture, the roasted seeds from inside your pumpkins are one of the most nutritious and flavourful seeds around. Dry and roast the seeds you do not keep for planting to eat as snacks, use in salads, cooking or in bread. They are delicious and healthy. While pumpkin seeds are available year round, they are the freshest in the autumn when pumpkins are in season, and nothing beats home-roasted seeds with your own spice blend. Action plan for parks and gardens in Orihuela Costa From the Office for coordinated Services, which is headed by Luisa Boné, an action plan has been launched for the green areas and for the streets of the residential areas of Orihuela Costa. “After restoring the normality to our beaches, we are now concentrating on our parks. We have compiled different working groups, each consisting of three employees. A working group will take care of the pruning of trees and plants, as well as the clearing of various areas. The other team is responsible for the maintenance of the city furnishings - the playgrounds, the benches, the waste baskets,” said the councillor. To date, these groups have been active in the green areas of La Zenia, Las Filipinas, Campoamor, La Florida, Los Valencia, Los Dolses and Blue Lagoon. And this week they continue their work in La Florida, moving afterwards to the residential areas of Horizonte, La Ciñuelica and Lomas de Cabo Roig. Step-by-step, said the Councillor, ‘we will be active in all the green areas of the residential communities’. Councillor Boné pointed out that ‘these works are very necessary in many residential areas, as many green areas on the

coast are not contractually covered by the company that is currently responsible for their maintenance. A good work plan and of course also an effort of the employees makes it possible for us to look after all the parks of the coast’.

The big clean Taking into account that the maintenance contract for urban green areas will expire soon, the City´s Department for Infrastructure, headed by Juan Ignacio López-Bas, is working on the compilation of a list of requirements that takes into account all the green areas of Orihuela Costa so that all residents have decent parks in good conditions where you also can take your children without worry. He said: “At the same time, we are using the services of a company responsible for the removal and spraying of weeds in the streets, curbs and sidewalks of the public roads of Orihuela

Costa. This cleaning action will last a month and was awarded for an amount of 17, 248.52 euros including VAT.” The councillor added that this service is administered by five garden and landscape workers who have four manual trimmers, two vans and two tanks for spraying against weeds. These works have been carried out in the same residential areas where the green areas have also been maintained and at the moment they are working in the residential areas of Horizonte and Villa Rosa. It is expected that in the coming days they will continue their work in the residential areas of La Ciñuelica, Lomas de Cabo Roig and Campoamor. These are residential areas that need this cleaning immediately. Boné said that the department ‘will repeat the spraying against weeds at the end of September, because only with a consistent approach, we will significantly reduce the amount of weeds on our roads’. oha is the capital city and most populous city of the State of Qatar. Doha has a population of 956,460 within the city proper. The city is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country. It is Qatar's fastest growing city, with over 40% of the nation's population living in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and it is also the economic center of the country. It comprises one of the municipalities of Qatar. Doha was founded in the 1820s as an offshoot of Al Bidda. It was officially declared as the country's capital in 1971, when Qatar gained independence. As the commercial capital of Qatar and one of the emergent financial centers in the Middle East, Doha is considered a world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Doha accommodates Education City, an area devoted to research and education. The city was host to the first ministerial-level meeting of the Doha Development Round of World Trade Organization negotiations. It was also selected as host city of a number of sporting events, including the 2006 Asian Games, the 2011 Pan Arab Games and most of the games at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. In December 2011, the World Petroleum Council held the 20th World Petroleum Conference in Doha. Additionally, the city hosted the 2012 UNFCCC Climate Negotiations and is set to host a large number of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In May 2015, Doha was officially recognized as one of the New7Wonders Cities together with Vigan, La Paz, Durban, Havana, Beirut, and Kuala Lumpur.

D

Geography Doha is located on the central-east portion of Qatar, bordered by the Persian Gulf on its coast. It is bordered by Al Wakrah municipality to the south, Al Rayyan municipality to the west, Al Daayen municipality to the north and Umm Salal municipality to the northwest. Its elevation is 10 m (33 ft). Doha is highly urbanized. Land reclamation off the coast has added 400 hectares of land and 30 km of coastline. Half of the 22 km² of surface area which Hamad International Airport was constructed on was reclaimed land. The geology of Doha is primarily composed of weathered unconformity on the top of the Eocene period Dammam Formation, forming dolomitic limestone. The Pearl is an artificial island in Doha with a

surface area of nearly 400 ha. The total project has been estimated to cost $15 billion upon completion. Other islands off Doha's coast include Palm Tree Island, Shrao's Island, Al Safia Island, and Alia Island.

Climate Doha has a hot desert climate. Summer is very long, from May to September, when its average high temperatures surpass 38 °C (100 °F) and often approach 45 °C (113 °F). Humidity is usually the lowest in May and June. Dewpoints can surpass 25 °C (77 °F) in the summer. Throughout the summer, the city averages almost no precipitation, and less than 20 mm (0.79 in) during other months. Rainfall is scarce, at a total of 75 mm (2.95 in) per annum, falling on isolated days mostly between October to March. Winters are warm and the temperature rarely drops below 7 °C (45 °F).

Region The majority of residents in Doha are Muslim. Catholics account for over 90% of the 150,000 Christian population in Doha. Following decrees by the Emir for the allocation of land to churches, the first Catholic church, Our Lady of the Rosary, was opened in Doha in March 2008. The church structure is discreet and Christian symbols are not displayed on the outside of the building. Several other churches exist in Doha, including the SyroMalabar Church, Malankara Orthodox Church, Mar Thoma Church (affiliated with the Anglicans, but not part of the Communion), CSI Church, SyroMalankara Church and the Pentecostal Church. A majority of mosques are either Muwahhid or Sunnioriented

Culture Doha was chosen as the Arab Capital of Culture in 2010. Cultural weeks organized by the Ministry of Culture, which featured both Arab and non-Arab cultures, were held in Doha from April to June to celebrate the city's selection.

Arts The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, opened in 2008, is regarded as one of the best museums in the region. This, and several other Qatari museums located in the city, like the Arab Museum of Modern Art, falls under the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) which is led by Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the daughter of the emir of Qatar.

Recycling success Orihuela recycles more than one ton of electrical and electronic equipment in two days. The Councillor for Road Cleaning and Urban Waste Collection, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced the results obtained in the campaign ‘Recycle your appliances’, in which the City of Orihuela has collaborated with the Generalitat Valenciana and the foundations Ecopilas, Ecofimática, Ecoasimelec and Tragamóvil. The councillor said: “Citizen participation and therefore, the result in our municipality has been the largest in the whole province and has exceeded

one ton in electrical and electronic devices.” Residents taking part in the scheme were asked to deposit their broken or out-of-date appliances in the collection bins and in return they received a gift for their contribution to the campaign. The councillor also said that given the demand for the collection of this type of waste from the districts, the coast and the city, ‘we will continue to promote this type of initiatives from the Department of Road Cleaning and Urban Waste’. Councillor Aparicio noted that with this type of campaign “it is guaranteed that appliances are recycled correctly. As often these devices end up in containers destined to MSW, and this generates a high degree of pollution in the environment.”

A day for dancing ■ SUZANNE O’CONNELL suzanne@costablancapeople.com

This was the fifth International Day of Dance celebrated in Torrevieja. It wasn’t in fact just one day but started on Friday 28th April at 8pm with the Municipal school gala dance and finished on Sunday 30th with the dance company MalArte’s show at 9pm. During these three days there were also dance workshops including ones about nutrition for dancers.

their variety and versatility. It was a pity that dancing at ground level made it very difficult for all but those on the front, or a little bit taller, to see. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón addressed the crowds first before

handing over to the dancers who performed extremely well with the limited amount of space available. In spite of the lack of facilities, the dancers showed their resourcefulness in being able to change their outfits quickly between dances and entertained the crowd who persevered in seeing their favourite groups. On Saturday 29th April it was Torrevieja’s day of street dance and groups from around the town took the opportunity to show their carefully rehearsed routines to the crowd. The display took place at las Piscinas Naturales on the sea front, although there was a little confusion about where exactly the groups should go to perform. A number of dance academies from across the town demonstrated their dancing ability during this ‘marathon of street dance’ which was a showcase for

Torrevieja comes out top One of those groups performing was Torrevieja’s Payas dance group. However, their afternoon’s dancing didn’t finish on Torrevieja’s Paseo. They had to make a swift exit after the very first part of the afternoon to reach Pinoso, over an hour away, in time to perform in its annual dance competition. For the dancers it meant a quick dash across the Spanish countryside to reach the Emilio Martinéz Saez theatre in this traditional Spanish

town. The competition included three categories one of which was for competitors aged 10 to 14 and another from 14 upwards. Payas entered two groups. The first, ‘Furbys’, in the 10 to 14 category came second. Their senior team, ‘Kaotix’, were delighted to be awarded first place in the 14+ category. Kaotix were also pleased when one of their dancers, Brandon, collected the best dancer award. The competing teams came mostly from Pinoso but also Alicante and Elche and it was a good-natured opportunity to perform and compete away from home. Events such as this with competitors from Torrevieja, remind people that it’s a town not just for tourists but one with many talented young people.

She is such a snob

Just plain mean

My sister hasn’t got a kind word to say about anybody, and acts like they are beneath her. She tut tuts at everything I do, if it differs from her way of doing things. Growing up I remember thinking how distasteful snobs were - I am more of a live and let live kind of a person and vowed never to be the same way. My sister takes after our mother I am afraid.

My niece has always been a bit mean, along with the rest of her immediate family. Her Mother didn’t teach them any generosity. I make an effort to keep in touch, after the father and mother divorced. However, these days when I invite my niece and her sister over, it seems to be dependent on whether there is a ‘tea laid on‘, and if there isn‘t, as with my daughter‘s 18th when she preferred to go out clubbing, my niece didn‘t even send a card. Also, she asked me for cash instead of a present for her son this year. I am really angry about it, and when we go to hers, we are sometimes kept on the doorstep.

Personally, I don’t think anyone has the right to be snobbish. You mention you thought your mother was a snob. As children we are influenced by our parents, but I always hope that as adults we are then free to make our own choices in life. You have seen the wrong in these traits and good for you. As for changing your sister’s way of thinking, well you could try gently pointing it out to her - perhaps she doesn’t realise how bad it is. I always think this kind of behaviour points to deep down unhappiness and feelings of inadequacy somewhere.

You can’t choose your family can you. If it were me, I would continue to send cards for birthdays and Christmas so as not to lose touch altogether, but it does seem very one-sided doesn’t it. You could point out the discrepancy, nicely, but perhaps it wouldn’t change anything. People need to be brought up with these qualities in the first place.

How much does it cost to use a Real Estate Agent? Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!

nlike in the U.K. when using a Real Estate Agent in Spain, the fees are very different. In general they can range between 3% to 10%, and even more in some scenarios. Things you have to be aware of when listing your property for sale, is the commission payable by you, the home seller. Many Real Estate Agents, tell you that their commission is 3%, but “buyer beware,” because what they don’t tell you, is that if they sell your home through a secondary agent, i.e. another agent brings the buyer, you have to pay the secondary agent’s commission too, which usually ends up costing you another 3%, that you hadn’t initially budgeted for. Totalling 6%. Ask your Real Estate Agent up front, who pays a secondary agents commission. In Spain, it is customary for the seller to pay the listing agent’s fees, however don’t be surprised if your buyer asks you how much commission they must pay. In Germany, it is custom for the buyer to pay the agent’s fee, not the seller. If you have listed your property for sale with a Real Estate Agent and you’ve agreed that they can charge whatever they want to the buyer, by

U

adding it on top of the price you are happy to achieve, this is known as a “Nett Listing.” This means that if you are happy to sell for a price of €200,000, for example. The listing agent can sell the property for, say €220,000, thus meaning the €20,000 will be the agents commission. This is extremely popular amongst the Spanish Real Estate Agents. Not so much a favoured practice amongst the British sellers, but it does happen. If you’ve ever registered your property for sale with an agent, thinking that you’ve agreed a marketing price for your home, but later checked on their advertising, and can see that they are offering your property for a much higher price, then this is exactly what they’re doing. The only difference is, that it could be that you did not authorize a “Nett Listing.” Remember, asking above the current market value could turn a lot of buyers off. Don’t expect your Real Estate Agent to charge you the percentages or even the fixed amounts, of that in the U.K. Marketing is very different here, especially as most of the buyers are sought internationally. or the last thirteen years, the team at the Costa Blanca People have been ardent supporters of local charity work, recognising the importance of fundraising and voluntary activities on the Costa Blanca. Through events such as the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards, we have always championed the impact of charity work within the local community. Raising funds and awareness for animals, children, illnesses, support for expats, help for the elderly, the homeless, culture, libraries – you name it, there are expats here on the coast giving up their free time to raise money. The Pride of Spain Awards is the only event of its kind here on the Costa Blanca to offer recognition to local people who have gone that extra mile for their community here in Spain.

And that’s what this Charity News Roundup is all about – shining a spotlight on those who have used their talents, generosity, kindness and courage to make this community, our community, one in which we are all proud to live. It has become a phenomenon in the expat community in Spain that if there is an individual or group in need, a charity seeking support or a campaign that needs to be pushed, the expat community rallies round, puts their hands in their pockets and puts their money where their mouth is. As such, we are delighted to dedicate even more space in your

HELPing those who cannot HELP themselves Have you ever wondered what life would be like coping with a disability, especially one so severe that it restricts your movement, your ability to take a trip out, to a bar or to restaurant or even to a medical centre or hospital so that you can receive essential treatment. There are far more people in the area who continually struggle with such disabilities than you might imagine, many of whom don’t drive or don’t have access to any form of transport. But at long last, certainly here on the Costa Blanca, there is at least one local charity that is doing something about it. HELP at HOME Costa Blanca, a charitable organisation with their headquarters in Playa Flamenca, has

our charity. His protocols and high standards of service reflect our approach to animal rescue and rehoming. He is the ideal person to help us raise our profile and attain more support for our work helping animals in need". Pets In Spain charity receives no government funding and there is no RSPCA in Spain. A dedicated multinational team of volunteers not only rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals themselves, they provide help and assistance to others and via their collaborating veterinary clinics will

underwrite vital veterinary treatment to animals rescued by members of the public. The charity also funds a feral cat TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) program, animal welfare awareness and publicity campaigns in different languages, they promote the beneficial and therapeutic effects animals can have on people of all ages, and manage a Dog Blood Donor register for when dogs need urgent blood transfusions. Grant Harrold announces his patronage for Pets In Spain on his web site: www.theroyalbutler.co.uk/charities Charity web site: www.petsinspain.com The charity is seeking donations to expand their animal rescue and welfare campaigns. identified the need for a dedicated vehicle that can be used within the local community to provide that vital service. Executive member Eileen Randall said “We are badly in need of such a vehicle, one that is fitted with all the necessary ramps and mobility equipment, driven by a suitably trained team of individuals, a vehicle that can provide such an important service to local people who suffer from such disabilities,” Eileen said that the charity needs in the region of 35,000 euro to ensure

that their dream is turned into reality. “We have raised approximately 19,000 euro already so we are just over halfway to our target, and by ensuring that the project is firmly in the public eye we hope that the generosity of the public will take us the rest of the way by the end of the financial year.” The Emerald Isle Weekly Market, which is held at the La Florida venue every Tuesday (11am-3.30pm), is currently the main source of fundraising for the vehicle, but with other activities on the horizon, especially a Grand Event to be held in

The Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards 2016: Fundraiser of the Year winne Marlene Brown and Joan Rampton.

Make it a date with Mack and Mabel Time is running out to get your tickets for Studio32’s summer production of ‘Mack and Mabel’. The performances are from Wednesday May 31st to Saturday June 3rd at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. All the performances start at 7.30pm. Studio32 support San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Association and other local charities. ‘Mack and Mabel’ is set in the era of silent movies and includes the Keystone Kops – Mack Sennett’s most famous silent movie creation. You’ve probably also heard of the character Fatty Arbuckle. In Studio32’s performance he is being played by Mervyn Williams. Before moving to Spain in 2000 Mervyn had never been on stage before. Last year, having done a few small shows, Mervyn wanted to take up the challenge of full-scale musical theatre and decided to join Studio32. The first role he played for them was as Mr Fezziwig in ‘A Christmas Carol’ and now he’s looking forward to this new

challenge. Fatty Arbuckle was a real character who mentored Charlie Chaplin and discovered Buster Keaton and Bob Hope. He was particularly famous for his love of the ‘pie in the face’ comedy routine with leading lady Mabel Normand. He was so popular that he became the highest paid actor of his time in Hollywood. If you would like tickets to come and see the performance you can call Philip on 602 454 033, or by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo.org. A seating plan is available on their website www.studiothirtytwo.org, along with lots of information about the company and past shows. Tickets are also available from: News 4 U, La Marina: 966 790 531 Cards & More, La Marina: 966 790 954 The Card Place, Benijofar: 966 713 266 Kennedy Supermarket, Los Montesinos: 966 720 006

Villamartin Plaza in September, Eileen is extremely hopeful. “There are activities being added to our calendar all the time. We have a fundraiser at Flamenca Beach, along with the Royal British Legion, on 28 May, the Oasis Bar in Benijofar has just announced a weekly quiz in our support, and we hope to announce even more events during the coming summer months, so with both fingers and legs crossed, I am hopeful that the charity will be able to meet it’s deadline and make this vitally important purchase toward the end of the year.”

If you, your company, bar or restaurant would like to help with the fundraising for this this vitally important purchase you can find more details on the Facebook page helpathomecb. Alternatively you could email or speak to either Eileen or the Project Manager, Sue Selwood, by telephone on 603 254 793, or by email: helpathomefr@gmail.com HELP at HOME Costa Blanca is run totally by volunteers and depends entirely on voluntary income from their donors and supporters to keep providing their vital services.

There can’t be many things more exciting than cruising on the Adriatic. Visiting Ports that are both historical and scenic, there is nothing better than waking up in a different port every day. And each of these ports are more exciting than the last. With coach travel to Madrid Airport, you fly to Bari (Italy) to meet your Costa Crucero representative who will transport you to your Ship the Deliziosa. On board we receive the “royal treatment” at dinner. From smiling waist coated waiters. Relaxing meals, a bit of musical entertainment in the bar, a show in the theatre, a throw of the dice in the casino, and a good nights sleep, how wonderful to wake in a different port every day. As the 2nd largest town in Southern Italy, Bari contains the bones of St Nicholas (aka Santa Claus) in its Basilica, one of the 1st Norman churches to be built in this area and its 11th century Romanesque

Cathedral is Bari's most important church. A gentle stop to get you in the mood for the next few days. Next day the famous Greek island of Corfu. A history of constant wars and battles has left a heritage of many castles. A popular spot with the Royals of Europe, but really didn’t join the tourist route until the 20thCentury. Next day the cliffs of Santorini tower over the ship. Transfers from the ship to the mainland using small local boats give us no clue of what is to come. There are 3 ways to go up to the town. You can walk – not really an option on the almost vertical road. You can use the cable car, Ok if you are not worried by heights. Or you can take the notorious Santorini Donkey ride, what great fun. Perhaps Donkeys up, cable car down might be about the right option. Whichever way you choose you will be enthralled by this delightful, sparkling whitewashed town, which seems to have come straight out of the film

No “unfair competition” in Gibraltar post Brexit The European Council’s approval on 29th April of the Brexit negotiation directives, conditioning any future relationship between Gibraltar and the EU to a prior agreement between the United Kingdom and Spain, gives Madrid an unprecedented veto over the British Overseas Territory. Ahead of the Brexit talks, the Spanish government has laid out what it sees as non-negotiable terms, among them that it will not allow Gibraltar to use unfair competitive practices against Spanish businesses. Spain wants a “soft” Brexit, which would mean in practice little change to the current situation, although it understands that London’s decision to leave the single market and customs union and to impose limits on the movement of workers from the EU will require negotiation. Where Spain does want to see change is regarding its relationship with Gibraltar. The Foreign Ministry’s Negotiations on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from

the EU, a document that has been sent to Congress, makes it clear that “Gibraltar is a matter of state,” and that the special regime the Rock currently enjoys “is a condition that Spain had to accept at the time (1986) to be able to join the then European Communities,” given that the United Kingdom had become a member back in 1973. But over the last three decades, Gibraltar’s statute “has led to a situation of unjustified privilege,” the document reads. The text points out that Gibraltar enjoys the four EU freedoms (free movement of people, goods, services and capital), yet is not part of the customs union or subject to British law, meaning that “it has developed its own regime which is extremely permissive in relation to tax, customs and business creation, which in practice has turned it into a tax haven.” The document points out that the Rock is not part of the United Kingdom: it is a territory subject to decolonisation

whose foreign policy is dictated by London and any future agreement between London and Brussels would require approval by Spain. The text also spells out its no-go areas: “Spain cannot accept for the EU to negotiate with the United Kingdom a relationship that is not compatible with Spain’s position on territorial claims, and that doesn’t respect Spanish interests, those of the people of the Campo de Gibraltar (the Spanish territory adjacent to the Rock) and that (doesn’t) prevent a situation of unfair competition with Spanish territory.” Rights of expats A more pressing matter will be how to negotiate the rights of Europeans resident in the United Kingdom and British nationals living throughout the EU. Official figures (estimates are much higher) put the number of Spaniards residing in the United Kingdom at 102,000 (50,000 pay National Insurance, equivalent to Spain’s Social Security), and

there are 286,000 British nationals living in Spain, of whom 105,000 are pensioners. “Spain believes the best solution would be to stick as close as possible to the letter or spirit of the current legislation,” says the report, while recognizing that this clashes with London’s intention to limit the number of Europeans working in the United Kingdom through a quota system or by restricting access to healthcare. Spain will argue during the Brexit negotiations for the “recognition of all rights of resident nationals in virtue of EU law.” These rights would apply to citizens and their families residing in another territory when the United Kingdom leaves the EU, which at the latest will be March 29, 2019. Spain wants the rights of nationals who have been resident in either country for more than five years to be respected, and is also calling for an agreement on the rights of temporary residents (those who have been residents for more

than three months and “who expect permanent residency.”) The Spanish Foreign Ministry criticizes the UK authorities’ approach in accrediting residency, saying such procedures should be “as agile and transparent as possible,” through easily obtained documents and that “could even be expedited by national authorities.” Regarding access to healthcare, Spain argues for “maintaining the current model of recognizing services (British nationals cost the Spanish healthcare system €250 million a year and receive €650 million in pensions) and underscores the need to “preserve those same rights for the (more than 7,000) transnational workers in Gibraltar.”

Under sea gas plant caused tremors in Valencia An underwater gas-storage plant built off the coast of Castellón province that was shut down in 2013 will remain mothballed for the foreseeable future, says Spain’s Energy Ministry. A report presented recent;y by Energy Minister Álvaro Nadal, and produced by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), confirms that injecting gas into the undersea Castor storage facility, off the coast of Vinaròs, was responsible for more than 500 earth tremors that were felt on land. However, Nadal has ruled out dismantling the plant, saying that removing the gas in the storage facility would be too risky and that a decision on dismantling the silo would be delayed, pending further reports. A 2014 report by Spain’s National Geographic Institute (ING) had already established a connection between the earth tremors and pumping gas into the facility. “For the moment, the best thing is to leave things as they are,” said Nadal. “Injecting gas was what in all probability produced the earth tremors.” Making use of a depleted oil field 1,700 meters below the sea, the Castor gas-storage plant was meant to be part of a network to hold a quantity of natural gas equivalent to the country’s total consumption over a period of 17 days in order to cover spikes in use and interruptions to supply. Liquid natural gas was supposed to be piped into the empty Vinaròs Castellon oil field via a 13.6-mile-long offshore pipeline. But following the multiple earth tremors, one of which measured 4.2 on the Richter scale, the government halted the project at the end of 2013. Professor Rubén Juanes, one of the experts who coordinated the report, said that the injection of gas caused a “destabilising of the Amposta fault and its branches.” But Juanes stated that the phenomenon could not have been anticipated with the “standards”

used by this type of gas-storage system. In October 2014, a year after halting activity at the storage facility, the government paid Escal UGS, the company behind the project, more than €1.4 billion to take control of the plant. The cost to the government for the failed project later rose to €1.7 billion. Spanish energy company Enagas took over the installation in 2014, putting it in to “hibernation.” In turn Enagas tasked MIT with a report on whether the plant should be dismantled as a potential environmental risk or whether it could ever be salvaged. For now, the government will have to shelve any plans to try to recover the €1.7 billion it has had to shell out for the plant, and which will be paid for by consumers on their gas bill over the next 30 years. What’s more, keeping the storage plant in hibernation will cost another €15 million.

Elche man, 81, holds world record for largest brandy collection on earth A pensioner in the local city of Elche has entered the Guinness Book of Records for having the largest brandy collection in the world. Manuel Bru – or maybe that should be ‘Brew’ – has 1,057 bottles of the spirit in his house, of which the oldest was made in 1888. The 81-year-old started his collection at the age of 55 years old and says his world record certificate is ‘a dream come true’. He applied for the official certification after meeting a brandy fanatic from Mallorca who “only had 840 bottles”. Manuel posed for photos with his collection at the request of the Guinness Book of Records authors so they could be included in the next edition, which is due out in October this year. He says his collecting quest has slowed down in recent years because sales of brandy have dropped, and so the price per bottle has shot up. However, he says now that he has beaten the world record he would have ‘no problem’ in selling his hoard at the

right price to the right person ‘who is keen to take them on and had the cash needed to maintain the collection’… rather than simply drinking the lot. Manuel's passion began more than 50 years ago when he and his mother ran a small food-anddrink shop with a bar on the premises, and he kept the remaining bottles when they shut

many decorative versions and some even in the form of footballers, bullfighters and Spanish soldiers. Brandy is a spirit produced by distilling wine, generally contains 35–60 percent alcohol by volume and is typically taken as an afterdinner drink. Some brandies are aged in wooden casks, some are coloured with caramel colouring

down the business. The oldest bottle in his collection, manufactured in 1888, was bought for just 150 pesetas (which is about €3.60) in Barcelona's Chinatown. His bottles come in all shapes and sizes, and he has amassed numerous limited editions, with

to imitate the effect of aging, and some brandies are produced using a combination of both aging and colouring. Varieties of wine brandy can be found across the winemaking world. Among the most renowned are Cognac and Armagnac from Southwestern France.

Numbers up over Easter The roads and restaurants have been busy over Easter so it comes as no surprise to discover that the number of visitors to the town is reported to be up by 16% during Holy Week. This percentage was arrived at by looking at the amount of water consumed and rubbish collected in comparison to last year. The town’s three and four star hotels were also well populated with 83.13% occupancy rate and one star apartments having a 72% occupancy rate. The figures covered the period of eleven days from the preceding Friday until Easter Monday. It is acknowledged that the increase in water usage could also have been prompted by higher temperatures. However, combined with the increase in rubbish collected and other indicatorsit’s believed that most of the increase was down to more visitors. The councillor for tourism, Fanny Serrano, remarked on the increased number and was pleased to see that the town still seems to be ‘in fashion’.‘These numbers are more what we are used to seeing in the summer season, not during Easter,’ she explained. The tourism office is another good indicator of the numbers of tourists in the town. The office based on the Playa del Cura reports that they took a total of 504 queries from 410 Spanish nationals and 84 foreigners. The office based on the Paseo de Vista Alegre, in total took 1,447 queries of which 601 were from Spanish nationals and 847 from foreigners. Making a total of 1,951 enquiries overall. The majority of foreign visitors were, ranked in order, from Britain, Belgium, Scandinavia, France and Germany. The majority of Spanish visitors were from Madrid (460). Suzanne O’Connell

Footwork Dance expands Local dance school Footwork has expanded from its home in Los Montesinos to open a second studio at Babo Roig, Orihuela Costa. The school currently has around 70 students which range in age from two years old to adult and offers a wide range of classes, from the more traditional Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Theatre Craft, Acrobatics, and Tai Chi, to the more exercise based classes such as Dancercise, Dance Fit and Ballates. The school has been open in Spain for 10 years and running from Los Montesinos for the past 6 years. Based at the Sophia Wellness Centre, La Regia, the new studio opened its doors last week (Monday 1st May) and held an open evening last week for local residents. The new studio is open every Monday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm initially but days will be added as the school grows. Currently the class times on Mondays are: 5.30pm - 6.30pm Talent Tots (2 years to 5 years), 6.30pm - 7.30pm Juniors (6 years - 11 years) and 7.30pm - 8.30pm Inter & Seniors (12 years upwards), however the school already has enquiries for further days and classes and enrolment is free for new students in Cabo Roig until the end of July.

Footwork Dance has been entering exams in Spain in the ISTD and IDTA syllabi for the last 5 years and has a 100 percent pass rate with everyone gaining the top two marks (the exams are awarded pass, merit and distinction) and both syllabi are recognised by the Council for Dance Education.

Footwork Dance Studios are run under the expert tuition of Principal Erica Dorrill, who teaches every class and every student. Erica began dancing as a toddler and trained at the prestigious Bush Davies School of Theatre Arts. After graduating Erica worked professionally as a dancer, acrobat/contortionist and actress for many years around the world on cruise ships, in the UK, and also on TV. Since gaining her teaching qualifications Erica has worked as a respected teacher and choreographer for various schools in the UK as well as opening her own dance schools in Sussex,

Norfolk, and finally in Derbyshire, before moving to Spain. Erica Said: “I was really pleased with the open day and the fantastic response we have had from it, it was great for prospective students to see what we do but also for the families of the students who were demonstrating to see the work in progress towards exams and shows. At Footwork we believe dance is for everyone and look forward to welcoming new students to our ever growing Footwork family.” For further information visit: www.footworkdancestudios.com or Facebook: footwork Dance Studios Spain. Welcome to the new-look Grill House AFTER 14 years, The Grill House restaurant in Urbanisation La Marina has recently reopened its doors as you have never seen it before. Since November, this much loved restaurant has been undergoing extensive expansion and renovation work meaning The Grill House has come back back bigger and better than ever. But despite the new appearance, one thing will never change; owners Dimitris and Rebecca Sakellariou. For over a decade they have brought their flair and passion for serving high quality food to customers who return time and time again, offering an unrivalled dining experience. This was their biggest refurbishment to date with the restaurant expanding and being completed gutted and re-designed with a modern, Mediterranean grill feel. It has a more prominent look standing out from the crowd with its 'celosia' latticetype facade, a decorative architectural look that was inspired by a sea front restaurant in Barcelona, which will allow the sunlight to create magnificent natural shapes and shadows. Inside, natural wood, marble and metal complement the Mediterranean style tiles

creating a unique, stylish, yet comfortable dining space. There is a larger bar area where customers can enjoy a drink or two before and after their meal, there is a more private dining area for larger parties and families will welcome the addition of a play area for children. Everything in The Grill House is bespoke and sourced both locally and internationally. As well as being more aesthetically pleasing for customers, who will no doubt love the new look, the space is also catering more for staff making their lives easier and therefore improving the service to customers, with a larger, more ergonomically designed kitchen area and storerooms and separate bathroom facilities. But despite the impressive changes making this local favourite unrecognisable, customers will be pleased to know that they will recognise the menu. Over the years The Grill House has constantly updated and added to the menu providing a fusion of their international Greek and UK heritage offering diners a wonderful range of classics such as BBQ ribs and steak straight off the grill, with international cuisine such as

filetto di manzo, chicken a la crème, chicken piri piri and beef chilli nachos. Everything is prepared and cooked using the best quality ingredients. Whilst there will be a few new dishes to tempt the taste buds, as well as the introduction of a new day time menu, the favourites will remain the same as will the prices and the evening set menu which offers unbeatable value at €12.95 will be back. Dimitris and Rebecca thank all their customers for their continued support and loyalty over the years and for their understanding during this renovation period and they look forward to welcoming everyone back soon. Reservations for the new-look Grill House are now being taken so whether you want an intimate meal for two or are looking for a great night out with friends, The Grill House is the place to go for great food in wonderful surroundings, excellent service and all at a budget to suit everyone. Tears in your Eyes.... Onions traditionally make us cry when peeling them, but red onions probably won’t Because red onions are slightly different chemically to traditional white onions they are far less likely to bring tears to your eyes when preparing them. Red onions have also got some amazing health giving properties. Because of their chemical compounds red onions help our immune system to help to protect us against cancer by inhibiting inflammation, repairing DNA and tissue damage, neutralize free radicals, eliminate carcinogens from the liver, and support a variety of detoxification pathways that remove toxins from the body. Red onions contain health promoting compounds that improve our overall immune response. They are also classed as a carminative herb that enhances digestive function and improves imbalances in gut flora. The flavanoids in red onions mean that they are much better at helping our bodies than their white or yellow family members. Another benefit of these onions is that they have as low glycaemic index which means that they are slower to release energy which increases blood glucose levels and can, as part of a healthy balanced diet, help to reduce the chance of us developing Type 2 diabetes. They also contain high levels of something called quercetin which has been shown to reduce the risk of laryngeal, gastric and reproductive related cancers.

Sharing memories Following the opening of the new funeral parlour in Torrevieja a new service has been announced to help relatives and friends share memories. It’s a new App that enables people to share photos, text and videos. The App is available in the ASV centres in Almería, Dénia, Torrevieja, Valencia, Cádiz and Antequera. Using the App relatives can announce the date of the ceremony, write personal messages and notes of thanks and condolences. The ASV group suggest that it is easy and straightforward to use. The

family will receive a message about the date of the ceremony and this can be used to invite others free of charge. The family can choose the level of privacy they would like and can create a public profile that is limited to those who they wish to have access. ‘It can help to unite families at this particularly difficult time and help them feel near to those who also loved this person,’ says Sonia Vivas director of the funeral parlour in Almeriá, from where the platform is available.

Illegal downloading in Spain drops The consumption of pirated material dropped in Spain in 2016 by 4.2 percent on the previous year, according to a survey carried out by consultancy firm Gfk, commissioned by Spain’s Coalition of Content Creators. This downturn is the first in 10 years, but in real terms, the content industry has experienced a 6.8 percent hike in loss of potential earnings and the number of people pirating remains unchanged. In 2016, there were 4.128 billion cases of illegal access to content valued at €23.294 billion, resulting in an estimated loss of €1.783 billion profit. According to the Observatory, had this material been paid for, it would have resulted in the creation of 21,697 new jobs. Now the industry is demanding bolder measures to reduce unlicensed downloading, as educational campaigns and current legislation have not proved effective. The breakdown of the loss of potential profit is as follows: football €271 million,

film €573 million, TV series €171 million, recreational reading material €107 million, music €414 million and video games €247 million. Particularly badly hit were the music and film industries, with digitally downloaded music losing €398 million in potential profit and cinema

losing €439 million. Online movies earned €97 million last year, while losing €134 million through piracy. The impact on state income has been a loss of potential VAT worth €360.7 million, social security contributions worth €166 million and €29 million in

I have Windows 10 and use Chrome to go onto the internet. Aunty says: Hi Jack. Google have made this really simple in Chrome and here’s what you do. Once you are on your Yahoo email page if you click on the three vertical dots in the very top right corner you will see a drop down menu. Hover over the “More tools” option and you will see “Add to desktop…” Click on this and it will bring up a small box where you can name the link and tick the “Open as windows” box. Repeat this for your bowls site and it’s as simple as that.

income tax. The Observatory points out that more than 67 percent of websites providing illegal content are financed by advertising, 69 percent promoting online betting and gaming, 52 percent dating sites and 39 percent adult-only sites. A third of publicity is bought by renowned brands of food products, fashion, insurance and telephones. According to Gfk, the survey was based on 4,036 online interviews and identified two main justifications for illegal downloading: 47 percent said, “I'm already paying for my internet connection” and another 47 percent said, “If the original content weren’t so expensive, I would pay for it.” Other justifications included: “I’m not harming anyone,” and “There are no legal consequences for people pirating, so it doesn't matter.” The survey also noted that 78 percent of people who download material illegally are using search engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo.

David via email asks: Hello Aunty, Hope you can help me as you have in the past. For some time now when using Firefox and when I go to Hotmail it always comes up with an error. I have removed & reloaded Firefox but it's still the same. I do use another browser but prefer Firefox most of the time. Hope you can help. Aunty Says: Hi David. Without seeing the content of the error message I can’t be sure of the exact source of the problem but there is one generic fix you could try. One very common problem is an out of date bookmark/favorite. Microsoft are continually messing around with their email system and Hotmail has since been replaced with Outlook then LiveMail (or is it the other way round) so maybe try going to www.outlook.com or www.live.com where you should be able to login using your Hotmail details. If this works you should delete the old bookmark and create a new one.

Hi Aunty. When my whiz kid 15 year old Grandson was over from New Zealand he used a 4 digit PIN number that he used to access his HP laptop which seems so much easier than my long and complicated password. He told me how to do it but I didn’t want to appear dumb so I just nodded and pretended I understood! Is this something simple enough for an old grey dinosaur to do or will I need to take it in somewhere? I have a Lenovo Idealpad with Windows 10. Aunty Says: Hi Ron. This is a really useful feature in Windows 10 and very easy to setup. Click on the Start icon and type SETTINGS and press enter. From the windows that pops up click on the “Accounts” section and choose “Sign-in options” and the rest is fairly obvious (if any of you don’t already have a normal password setup then you will first need to add one)

Ron from Los Balcones asks:

auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com

That’ll do for this week. Email me your problems to and I will see what I can do.

N332 secures new sponsorship Back in October 2015, the Costa Blanca People began featuring our Driving in Spain column where readers were invited to ‘ask the Guardia Civil’ about motoring in Spain. The column was run in conjunction with the N332 volunteers – the group behind the hugely popular Facebook page and website. We are delighted to announce this week that after over a year and a half working together, we have decided to further concrete our good relationship and along with our partners at Moneycorp currency exchange, the Costa Blanca People will be official sponsors of the N332. Pride of Spain award winner, Francisco Morales, is a Guardia Civil Traffic Officer and along with his Guardia Civil colleagues and fellow N332 team member Mark Nolan, the group spends great time and energy replying to people’s questions about motoring laws. Francisco told us, “Some driving laws are universal – like obeying the speed limit, or not using your mobile phone while driving. However, some are unique to

Spain – for example, did you know that if you are towing a trailer, you are obliged to carry a fire extinguisher? My colleagues and I from the N332 advice group want to ensure that drivers aren’t fined unfairly because of lack of local knowledge. We can do this through our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain) and the website N332.es which is run by Mark Nolan to help us spread the word. However, as not everyone has internet access, or Facebook, collaborating with the Costa Blanca People is a great way for us to get the message out to the English speaking community on the Costa Blanca.” What does this new collaboration mean for our readers? You will have access to more regular advice with a weekly Driving in Spain column by the N332’s Mark Nolan. Not only that, but the Costa Blanca People and N332 will be working together on a number of events and projects during the year to raise even more awareness of motoring laws in

Spain among international drivers here. The Facebook page has grown immensely in the last 18 months having

increased its followers from 14,000 to 101,377 (and counting!). The team at N332 are also holding a series of talks and presentations and recently, met with the children of Phoenix International School (See Mark’s article, below). These local presentations are invaluable as a means of spreading correct information. Francisco told us, “There is a lot of misinformation around – for example, people think it is the law to

carry spare bulbs in the car with you and that you will be fined if you don’t. However, this is not always the case as in some cars, the lights can only be fixed by a mechanic and in this case, it is not obligatory to carry spare bulbs. Bit by bit, we are trying to make sure everyone has the most up to date, correct information.” Managing Director of the Costa Blanca People, Claire Richards said, “We are thrilled to announce this important collaboration with N332 and Moneycorp. We have always been great admirers of the hard work and dedication of the team of volunteers and are excited at the prospect of working together in the future to ensure safer roads.” Send your questions about driving in Spain to n332@costablancapeople.com Don’t forget you can find more advice about driving in Spain at www.facebook.com/DrivingSpain and from the website N332.es

N332 Goes Back to School For its final presentation of the season, members of N332 visited the Phoenix International School in San Miguel de Salinas to give a road safety presentation to the students attending the school. The team gave three presentations to three aged divided groups, with the younger pupils covering everything from the basics of crossing the road safely, wearing a seatbelt, riding a bike safely, and even having fun with new road safety campaigns, such as how to discourage

grownups from using a mobile phone whilst driving. Meanwhile, the older attendees were given more in depth information about the laws relating to traffic and safety, including scooters, riding bikes and their obligations under the law. This is the last presentation before the busy summer season starts, but the N332 team has already secured a number of presentations in the autumn. If you are a local community-based group of 60 or more people and would like the N332

team to visit you, the group has some timeslots available, email news@n332.es and organisers will see when they can arrange to visit your group and give a talk after the summer. By Mark Nolan

Cafe Uno Golf Society Annual Golf Tournament This year on 3rd & 4th May 2017, 22 members and guests of the Café Uno golf Society from Catral, played 2 rounds of golf at Roda Golf in Alcazares for the "Fred Rich" trophy. The 1st day was a team 123 as well as individual

do with the socialising from the previous evening. It was unfortunate that all yellow balls were somehow lost by the end of the round, only one team managed to make it last to the 18th hole, where it also met a watery end. This was better than being lost off the 1st tee, as I myself was guilty of!

Now for the results:-

Day 1. 1st J.Doyle - 32 points. 2nd S.Lawrence - 30 points. c/b. Day 2. 1st J.Doyle - 33 points. 2nd D.Stewart - 31 points.

Stableford scores. The combined team scoring produced a winning score of 94. Day 2 was a yellow ball competition, this giving double score for the player using the yellow ball. This team game along with the combined scoring produced a winning team score of 112. Day 1, everyone was enthusiastic and keen to get going, only to find that the course was rather more challenging than first thought. The length of some of the holes combined with a strong wind, made for an interesting round. Scores were varied but not outstanding, the best being Stableford 32points. Day 2 was a different story altogether. Playing with the responsibility of not wanting to lose the yellow ball, automatically does something to ones brain cells. I don't believe that it was anything to

Best score over the 2 days and winner of the Fred Rich trophy was J Doyle with a score of 65 points. 2nd overall was D.Stewart with a score of 61 points. Nearest to the pin winners were:- A.Newbold; A.Baines; J.Doyle; P.Jenkinson; K.Rennison. 2's winners were:- J.Doyle; A.Baines; H.Hunter; B.Howie. Day 1 team winners with 94points:- A.Newbold; H.Hunter; A.Baines; B.Howie. Day 2 team winners with 112 points:S.Hamilton; C.Pepperday; R.Pownhall; B.Wright. Congratulations to J.Doyle on winning this year’s tournament, and well done to all the other winners. Thanks go to Peter Smith for arranging this year’s tour, and to Graham Butterworth (captain) and John Pedersen (handicap and competition organiser) for their work in helping to make it a successful trip. Finally thanks to Café Uno for their Hospitality. Photo shows J.Doyle (pictured left) receiving the trophy from Graham Butterworth(captain).

T.M.G.S. @ Campoamor At last, the end of high season is insight, we can now expect quicker rounds and for that reason better golf. Today was a fine example of this, it took us a little over 4 hours and more than 8 members played better than par. 40 members and guests turned up at this venue for our usual 9am start, with the temperatures rising so were the expectations of good

golf. The 2s pot from last week rolled over and now contained a very nice €60 and with 5 par 3s here at Campoamor it was obvious that someone would make one and so it proved, Henry Steele on hole 15 and Ove Cederberg on hole 4. In the N.T.P. competition this week Pearl Sabine hole 4, Ole Rong hole 6, Ove Cederberg hole 10, no one on hole 15 and Joe Dean on hole 17. Our best visitor this week was M. O’Halloran with 37 pts. In the bronze category 3rd and 2nd places were

decided on handicap with both R. Rea and G. Chapman on 35 pts. 1st place went to J. Hillier on 39 pts. To achieve a podium place in the Silver category it needed 37 pts. from O. Rong, countryman K. Krog came in a point better to take 2nd place while the winner with 39 pts. was A. Rickers. Gold division players also need to be better than par to get onto the

winners photo, 3rd P. Bradley 38 pts. ( H’Cap 9) 2nd N. Spaniol 39 pts. (H’Cap 11) 1st O. Cederberg 40 pts. (H’Cap 13).Phot. Silver category winners. STILL ALL TO PLAY FOR AT THE TOP

With only two matches left (Real Madrid have three) the two top teams are neck-and-neck at the head of La Liga. Barcelona, with no European commitments, used all their impressive fire-power to overcome Villareal 4-1 in the Nou Camp, Messi scoring twice, including the seemingly inevitable spot-kick. Zidane, on the other hand, mindful of Real Madrid’s upcoming semi-final return leg with Atletico, reserved almost all his top players, but James and Morata scored two apiece to thrash doomed Granada 0-4. The other relegated side, Osasuna, also let in four, to Valencia, who announced their decision to part company with trainer Voro at the end of the season – hmmm. On the brink of joining Graanada and Osasuna, Sporting won a tight struggle with Las Palmas 1-0, and must now wait to see what Leganés can do with Betis – a win for the tiny Madrid club, and Sporting look to be going down. Atletico beat Eibar 1-0, and Alavés surprisingly saw off neighbours Athletic Bilbao by the same score. The competition for Europa League places couldn’t be fiercer, as only a single point covers Villareal, Athletic and Real Sociedad. Nothing much changed in the second division, where they still have five matches to play, but locals Elche could be in serious danger. Only a win against bottom club Mirandés will help to prise them out of the mire, as the now sit, separated only by goal difference from the relegation places after losing to Mallorca. In division 2B, with just one game left to play,

LAS SALINAS PETANCA SUMMER LEAGUE: WEEK 4 Franco Belgas Justin, and Los Bandidos are locked in a power struggle, with Franco winning away to Rocajuna Lions by 7-1, Los Bandidos, replied with a 7-1 win over Franco Belgas Lucky, this kept both teams on identical points difference , they meet at the Civic Centre on May 12th, should be worth watching. Lakeside Hellcats drew 4-4 with the Pumas keeping both teams in mid table. Mirador Swallows, won at home to Los Altos Dragons 5-3. DIVISION 3: Domino Phoenix, won away at Los Altos Diamonds by 8-0, with the Falcons, winning at home to Peacocks Green by 6-2, keeping them in 2nd place. Lakeside Lions, beat El Rancho 2, by 5-3, and Peacocks Blue, drew at home to El Rancho 1. DIVISION 4: New leaders are Boulero, they won away to Domino Dolphins by 5-3, Domino Knights moved into 2nd place with a 7-1 win at home to Laguna Rosa. Amigas Belgas, won at home to Domino Dolphins 6-2. LADIES DOUBLES: THIS TAKES PLACE AT LAKESIDE/SAN LUIS, on Sunday May 21st, and is Sponsored by SOLSPAINGROUP, the Estate Agents in Quesada, we hope for a good line up. Roger Seymour

group 1 features a desperate struggle between Cultural Leonesa and Racing de Santander, group 2 looks like falling to Albacete, group 3 has a runaway winner in Barcelona B (with Alcoyano a meritorious second, and Hercules just outside the play-off places) and group 4 will have a clear winner in La Hoya Lorca. In England, Manchester City started the weekend with a 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace. Sunderland obviously want Hull City as company in the Championship, their win over them, coupled with Swansea’s win over Everton, puts the Tigers into the drop zone. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United renews their hopes of a top-four finish. In athletics, Thomas Rohler, the German Olympic Javelin champion, hurled his spear 93.90 metres in Doha, the second longest throw in history. (behind Czech legend Jan Zelezny) And athletics bosses are at last awakening to the need to wipe out all the drug-affected ‘world records’ (some danger of ‘throwing out the baby with the bath-water?’) It’ll be interesting to see how they go about it. In cricket, to nobody’s great surprise, England beat Ireland 2-0 in their 50 over series, Adil Rashid bamboozling the Irish tail in the first match, and Jonny Bairstow hammering a rapid 72 in the second to underline the massive difference.

CD Montesinos Your week in Sport v Grupo Caliche MONTESINOS 7 - 1 GRUPO CALICHE

In front of a crowd of nearly 700, Cd Montesinos walked on to the pitch with young mascots and through a honour guard made up of young players and the team of Grupo Caliche, and the town band, to the sound of fireworks and a noisy crowd of supporters. Having won the league last weekend one could expect the team to ease up a little, however, Monte started as if their lives depended on it. 3 up inside 15 minutes, and with Vaz running rampant, Monte played with the style and enthusiasm which has been their hallmark all season. The opposition was brushed aside like so many others this season. A 4th goal before half time left the crowd looking forward not only to the food/drink after the game, but the next 45 minutes. With Carlos Lorente and man of the match Carlos Ventura along with Vaz running riot, more goals were always on the cards. By full time Monte had added 3 more allowing Grupo Caliche a late consolation goal. After the on-pitch celebrations with vast quantities of water and cava, the

presentations of trophies to each player and staff member, the team climbed onto a proudly decorated “substitute open-top bus” followed by numerous cars, and went on a noisy tour of Los Montesinos. The team paraded into the local Church to present flowers to the Church. There was a choir singing, and there were speeches thanking everyone concerned with the success of the team, including a mention for the Full Monte. The team then appeared on the balcony of the town hall while fireworks were let off on the roof. A great end to the season.

Mark Selby, from Leicester, put in a performance in the World Championship Snooker Final that was identical to his compatriots season on the football field. Absolutely rubbish for the first half of the final against John Higgins, Selby woke up and ground through the gears to end up victorious, beating the Scot 18-15. Actually, the football comparison doesn’t really work as (a) Selby won something at the end of it and (b) didn’t sack anybody’s favourite uncle to turn things round. Still, well done to the Jester from, er, Leicester.

Relegated! Paterna 2-0 CD Torrevieja

This 2-0 defeat in Paterna on Sunday evening brought down the curtain on CD Torrevieja's 12 year stint in the National 3rd division and they will now be playing Preferente football come September. It has been a shocker of a season. They started off with a manager who left them rock bottom when sacked after five matches. They were told to vacate their home stadium after the Town Hall advised it was structurally unsafe. They lost all advertising revenue, with no facility to accommodate sponsors and those not keen to pay the admission fee could look through the railings and watch matches for free! A calamity from start to finish! The club signed over 40 players, more than a dozen in January, in every effort to extracate themselves from their relegation plight, but despite some bright moments, the facts were stark. Scoring less than one goal per game and conceding almost two every outing, their tenure in the 3rd division could not be sustained. Fourteen consecutive matches without a win between 13 Novenber and 19 February meant a harsh, cruel winter, with much too much work to be done. But it was the lack of goals that spelt disaster, not one in Torry's last four outings. You can't win if you don't score and that just about sums it up.

The first half in Paterna was fairly even with a couple of half chances to either side. The best of the bunch was a through ball to Beltran from Molina. Beltran had a couple of yards on his chasing opponents but as they closed in on him, he fired from just inside the box and missed the target completely. Say no more. Jose Carlos was left exposed at the other end and did well to deny Selu from a corner, but all in all chances were few and far between. Paterna played with five defenders along the back and generally always had a couple of spare personnel to cope with Torry advances. They maintained this rigid formation by lumping the ball hard from their own third of the park to the edge of the Torry penalty area and contesting for possession in that danger area. Torry coped fairly well with this tactic, but with nudges and pushes Paterna unsettled Torry and human nature being how it is, the referee probably found

himself fed up blowing his whistle every time they attacked for such offences, so they got away with it from time to time, thus managing the odd chance on goal. They also were happy to try and intimidate attackers and Lewis, Molina and Beltran all came in for some bad challenges, as well as off the ball niggles. Lewis was hacked down from behind in the first period and midway through the second half substitute Borja Mir was felled off the ball as he chased a long ball. The referee was on top of this incident, cautioning the offender and awarding a dangerously positioned free kick to Torry. From 25 yards out, Lewis line up his shot but failed to hit the target, summing up the poor strike rate of the team overall. Before the game was over, captain Javi Meca was dismissed for a second caution and as good a central defender as he is, this has become a liability in his game. He now misses the "meaningless" final

fixture at home to Borriol this weekend and probably wont be that fussed. Once more Vicente Boix played well, one of only a few players with energy, determination and the will to battle until he drops. Lewis Allen also fits this bill and these two deserve credit for the total committment they have demonstrated week in week out in an otherwise listless and sorrowful season. Civera netted for the hosts ten minutes into the second half. Their keeper whacked it from his box to the edge of Torry's penalty area. There, a nudge knocked out one Torry defender, which the referee ignored. The ball broke in the inside right position inside the box and Civera drove it home with force. After Javi Meca's dismissal, Torry did not lie down. Ten minutes before Torry were reduced to 10 men, Pastor was introduced and he nearly wriggled into a shooting position from the left flank, seeking to cut in and unleash his trademark curling right foot shot. Beltran tried similar from the other wing. But it was an injury time second for Paterna as Martin was body checked as he tried to fool his opponent on the edge of his own area. Once more the referee

(who was a long way off) failed to recognise the foul and Tobias took full advantage to ram home number two and ensure third division football for his club next season. The final farewell to division three for Torry - for now at any rate - takes place on Sunday at the Nelson Mandela with a 6pm kick off against Sergio Garcia's Borriol. It will be an opportunity for fans to say goodbye to the vast majority of the players, who will not be playing Preferente football next term. Pastor has already been on social media to say how sad and disappointed he is to have let the fans down and not helped secure division three football for the club. He is one player who has absolutely no need to apologise and I am sure every single Torry fan will wish him well in his new career, his football progression and his new life in Australia when he departs this summer. He joined the club three months into the season and finished top scorer with 10 goals. How the club could have done with him from the off! Jeff Scott. Vice president CD Torrevieja

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Let’s start today’s column by taking you all the way back to Friday night where Spurs decided the place to concede the title was the London Stadium. What is it with Spurs and losing their dignity in various parts of London? As Sky presenter Rachel Riley said, bottle jobs. That comment was accurate, yet rich, coming from a supporter of a side still battling to turn spending nearly £100m on a player into Champions League football. Still, Spurs and their fans were effusive in their praise for their side. I mean, don’t forget - they turned this into a title race of sorts. Imagine grandads of the future telling their grandkids about the great Spurs side of 2017. “Tell me Grandad, tell me about all those goals Kane and Alli scored. They must have won the league?” “No my boy, but they did turn it into a title race!” Yeah, hardly the stuff legends are made of. Still, I am sure Pochettino will win the title soon. The La Liga title with Barcelona that is. Talking of frauds, as we kind of were, step forward Sunderland. Don’t take the mick. You’ve been asked to leave the Premier League, so please do so quietly. Winning 2-0 at Hull really isn’t on. As for Moyes saying “the boys played with pride” well where the hell did they find that from? Their last bit of collective

pride was washed down the sink at the backend of February. Maybe it is a new cunning plan to get rid of Moyes, being put into action by his hapless players. I mean, losing every week didn’t work. Swansea, for once, made the most of the invitingly wide gap in the relegation trapdoor. Nothing says “I am not interested in the manager role at Barcelona” more than losing to Swansea, eh Ronald? Apparently Everton were caught on the hop by Swansea “fighting for their lives”. Yeah, that’s what the thought of a trip to Burton Albion next season can do to you. With two to play, four points separate Hull, Swansea and Palace, though it would take Palace losing games 5-0 for them to be too involved. Which brings us to Manchester City beating Palace 5-0. What’s that Big Sam’s ego? You have nothing to say this week? Having made it clear that beating the top teams meant nothing more to him than beating the likes of Sunderland

(oops), Sam sent his side out to the slaughter against a team inspired by David Silva and Yaya Toure. Yes, this was City in their 2011 vintage. Their Champions League destiny is firmly back in their hands, especially if big Vinny can stay fit for the remaining three matches. At some point during the season Leicester will have been accused of putting in the worst title defence ever. Well, they are now higher in the league than Chelsea were last season, so what

but twice and, of course, one of them was from a corner. Is anybody that bothered about Bournemouth against Stoke? No? Didn’t think so, moving on. A little word in Kloppo’s ear, like. Don’t moan about the media creating an “issue” about Liverpool’s performances against teams lower in the division when you then go out and play like that against Southampton. I know, I know, possession and all that is great in football but forgive me. 88% possession, or whatever it was, doesn’t mean that if James Milner cannot score from the spot. Fraser Forster put in the kind of performance that suggests to me he fancies being the next graduate from the Liverpool B team academy. Klopp explained the inability to turn lots of passes into goals. The pitch was too dry. Yes indeed, that noise you can hear is Shankly and Paisley guffawing with

Walter Mazarri

say you to that #ClaudioIN boys? Walter Mazzarri assures everyone he has been improving his English, so he will completely understand the message he was getting from the Watford fans as the Hornets sunk to a 3-0 defeat. I mean, who lets Riyad Mahrez score against them nowadays? Burnley and WBA had 0-0 written all over it, so it was no great surprise to see it finish 2-2. WBA finally scored not once,

laughter in their respective graves. Back in the day, you know, when Rooney was good, Arsenal against United used to decide titles. Now it is merely a match between two teams trying to find their way in the dark to Champions League football. I’ll tell you how important this game was to Jose. He picked a youth team player at right back and Wayne Rooney. Yeah, his focus was very much on Thursday’s second leg. Randomly, Arsenal’s opening goal had me remembering England versus West Germany in 1990, the ball deflecting wickedly off Paul Parker and making Peter Shilton look every one of his 56 years. At 1-0 to Arsenal, I was calculating every possible way Arsenal could completely screw this one up. At 2-0 Arsenal it dawned on me. Wenger was in serious danger of finishing 5th in the league. What a fightback from the wily old fox. Arsene deserved his share of the Maltesers being handed out on the bench. It’s just a shame he didn’t offer Jose one. Mind you, Jose was probably too busy being angry about the 77 match unbeaten run coming to an end that saw the club move from 6th to, er, 5th. It was the best 5th/6th playoff match I have seen for years, and a win that saw Arsene beat Jose in a proper match for the first time ever. That’s enough for a new deal, right? Well, Arsene is Mal-teasing the fans into thinking the 4th place trophy is viable and no mistake. So Chelsea need just the six points to win the title. Well, three really. They’ll beat Middlesbrough, won’t they?

Costa Cobras RFC successful fun day On Saturday Costa Cobras RFC held their first fun day. We had quite a few juniors interested in joining, we are awaiting response from San Fulgencio town hall about earlier training times for them so watch this space! We also had more interest for the adults, the main reason for organising the day was so the local community got to try the sport out. It was difficult at times to get the kids to stop at the end, which was great. On top of this we managed to raise 175€ for AFA San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s charity, thanks to the hard work of all the clubs members and families, as well as all of the generous donations from the people who came to see the vice president getting waxed and buying the raffle tickets. A big thank you must also go to Lee Fox of Mercury FM and the San Fulgencio town hall for letting us have the pitch free, and not forgetting Manolo for the bouncy castle. We now have lottery cards for sale. 10€ each for the Euro Millions, the card is valid till May 2018 and you have 2 draws per week, the cost of the card is split between the club and the charity, the Jackpot if

won is shared between everyone in the syndicate, the Jackpot is 17,000,000€ and we have 170 cards for sale, so get them while you can. If you would like to come and join us we train at the football ground in San Fulgencio every Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00. Everybody is welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier. Why not come along and join the fun with the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. For more information about our club, or the lottery cards, call or Whatsapp Dutch on 692 767 242 or find us on Facebook - S.F. Costa Cobras RFC.
