Big name to lead Cabo Roig Parade The organisers of the Cabo Roig St Patrick’s Day Parade have secured the services of former Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen as Grand Marshall at this year’s parade. OWEN served as head of the Irish Government from 2008 to 2011, taking the reins after Bertie Ahern’s resignation. The Costa Blanca People spoke exclusively to local businessman Brian Kiernan, who has been involved in the Cabo Roig St Patrick’s Day Parade since its inception. Brian told us, “This is a major coup for Cabo Roig, and for the Costa Blanca – we are delighted that the former leader of the Irish government is coming here to our little corner of the world to meet the huge Irish community here, and to lead the way for the now famous St

Patrick’s Day Parade in Cabo Roig.” The parade this year falls on a Saturday and is sure to be the biggest and best yet. The timings of the parade itself are to be confirmed soon by the organising committee in order to ensure that the parade and the Six Nations rugby don’t clash and that

everyone gets to enjoy the day. Italy is set to take on Scotland in Rome, followed by England versus Ireland at Twickenham and finally, Wales and France will do battle in Cardiff. Alongside Brian Cowen will be Galway TD Frank Fahey who was instrumental in securing the

participation of the former Taoiseach as Grand Marshall, explained Kiernan. He continued, “This is absolutely major for the area, it should secure some excellent publicity in Ireland – all of which will be good promotion for this area of the Costa Blanca and all we have to offer.” Also in attendance will be former Galway Mayor, Martin Quinn and other Irish community leaders. In the run up to the parade, the organising committee will be hosting a number of fundraising events to help towards the running costs. Already, some money was raised with the raffle of a holiday for two people to come to Spain to see the parade. Today (Tuesday 23rd January), Smiling Jacks is hosting a bowling event at the ozone and still to come are race nights, quiz nights and golf events. Local businesses, clubs, charities, groups and organisations are warmly invited to participate in the parade and

organisers are keen to remind participants that there are prizes up for grabs for the top three floats. Anyone interested in participating in this year’s parade which, of course, takes place on March 17th should call Jimmy on 603 11 48 96 or Richie on 637 49 09 37 or drop into the Trinity Bar on Cabo Roig strip. For information about the forthcoming fundraising events, and on the parade itself, check out the event’s Facebook Page – simply search Facebook for “St.Patrick's Day Parade, Cabo Roig, Spain” and like the page for updates. BITE SIZE Torrevieja smelling NEWS: much sweeter May Fair returns to May Hopefully Torrevieja should have ditched the bad smells that used to drift from its sewage treatment plant. The main container now has a cover in place which should help prevent the smell that up to 30,000 local people had to endure on occasions. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón, inaugurated the new dome-like cover on 17th January. The project to cover the container was the result of collaboration between the town hall, provincial government, the regional government and Hidraqua. It has taken ten years of complaints from

pushed for from the start. The cost of the project was €235,000 but this is a reduction from the original €314,391 that was projected. The dome has also been connected to an odour elimination system which was already in existence at the plant. The plant had been the only one within the Valencian community with more than 50,000 inhabitants that did not have this covering. The facilities were expanded in 2007 and it is unclear why measures were not taken then. The smells coming from the

In 2017 the May Fair had to be put back into October due to insufficient time to finalise contracts. However this slot, which was allocated during the Puente del Pilar, is not anticipated to be the permanent date for the fair. In 2018 the May Fair, or Feria de Sevillanas, will be just that and take place during May. The awarding of the contract is beginning now and hopefully this should avoid the delay seen last year. In spite of the change of date, October Fair did prove to be a success and there were even some people who suggested that it should continue to be held in this month in future. However, many others were disappointed at the delay and those who usually holiday in May in Torrevieja missed out completely. They, at least will be happy to see it back to its old slot.

Torrevieja’s official population down by one in five In 2013 it was recorded that there were 105,000 residents in Torrevieja. Now the statistics say that there are only 84,000. However, the debate is on as to whether this figure is accurate and if it is why such a drop has been recorded. The political party Sueña Torrevieja are asking for a campaign to be launched in different languages to encourage all Torrevieja’s actual residents to sign up on the padrón. The padrón is the official register of how many people live in the town and according to the number registered, the state allocates an allowance. The fewer that there are and the less money the town gets to maintain its infrastructure. Statistics supplied by both the Instituto Nacional

questioned the wisdom of building new properties when so many remain empty. There have been recent announcements about new build to take place in the town. Torrevieja does present as an unusual case with a fluctuating population. Many people live a portion of the year here and are officially classed as nonresidents. However, there are also people who live the majority of the year here but do not register. This means that there is less money to channel into the infrastructure of the town which is financed for fewer people and already struggles to maintain the basics. People also miss out on some of the benefits that there are in being on the padrón. Sueña would like to

‘‘ de Estadística (INE) and the census suggest that there is a significant drop. Councillor Pablo Samper, (above) has spoken about the impact that this drop has. ‘It has a series of consequences,’ he explains, ‘there is a loss of consumption that affects our trade and reduces the finance we get from the state.’ An impact that will have implications for the budget for years to come. Another concern is the number of abandoned houses that there are in the municipality and the risk of squatters. ‘A problem that is increasing,’ says the councillor. Sueña have also

This campaign would be directed at those inhabitants who are resident here but have not registered. trade and coaching programmes for young people between the ages of 16 and 20 who neither study nor work. There will also be courses on raising safeguarding issues such as gender violence. A new programme that’s to take place will promote youth volunteering in the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja. This is being held in collaboration with the park management. There will also be a new free legal advice service about work and housing issues. For more information about any of these opportunities you can go to the CIAJ building on Paseo Juan Aparicio or call 965 714 072 or request information via whatsapp on 606 055 291.

Torrevieja football club is to take action against a young person who punched a member of the opposing team, Lacross Babel de Alicante. The dispute took place in Torrevieja’s sports city ground during a youth match at the weekend. The match had to be suspended two minutes before the end due to a group of about 40 people, including players and fans, engaged in pushing and hurling insults at one another. The chaos that resulted was triggered by the aggression of a Torrevieja player who hit a member of the other team on the left cheekbone causing bruising and

The game stopped in the 88th minute. The Guardia Civil were called to attend along with Torrevieja’s local police force and the GRO. Following their arrival the crowd calmed down, both sides indicating that they would be making official complaints about the behaviour of the fans and players of the opposing team. Details were taken of the incident in case complaints are filed about it. Fortunately no major injuries were recorded and no ambulance was needed at the site. The youth football team includes players of between 16 and 18 years old.

blood to be drawn. The disagreement is believed to have been after a penalty goal was scored by Torrevieja resulting in a draw at 2 goals each. Following this clash, members of both teams, both on and off the pitch, became drawn in and they were then joined by fans and family from both teams on the pitch. Given the risk to safety and the failure of the players and fans to take heed of requests to calm down the situation, the referee decided to suspend the match.

The match began at 4pm and the team from Alicante had been in the lead until the end of the second half when the goal was scored in the 88th minute. Now it is down to Torrevieja F.C. to take measures against the player who began the skirmish. It is also likely that penalties will be imposed by the Valencian Football Federation and the player will be suspended for several games.

Art exhibition From Saturday 13th January until 25th February there is a display of art work in the exhibition rooms on the Vista Alegre. It includes paintings by the artist Jaume Marzal and is entitled ‘Miradas y Gentes’. Jaume Marzal studied drawing and painting at the official arts school in Barcelona and has had work commissioned in England, Scotland, Italy and France as well as Spain. In 1991 he began a series of travels to Arabic countries including Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Somalia, Djibouti, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. During 2012 he visited Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Sri Lanka and Malaysia, preparing work for an Asian series. His travels are the inspiration behind his paintings and in each country he has embarked on a dialogue with the people living there and their culture.

Torrevieja’s budget update After months of debate and disagreements over the budget it looks as though it could go ahead in February. Councillor José Hurtado announced that the 2018 town budget could be in place by 1st February. The next stage is for the document to be published in the Province’s Boletín Oficial. The stalemate there had been over passing the budget was finally breached when the two opposition parties, Sueña Torrevieja and Ciudadanos, agreed to support it. The PP continues to oppose the passing of the budget.

What to do with Council to remove those spare coins three rubbish heaps If you’ve been collecting loose change in a bottle somewhere and don’t know what to do with it, HELP Vega Baja has the answer. They have just started a new project whereby they will issue people with special boxes to collect their change in and then donate it to the charity. It can be quite a dilemma what to do with all the ‘shrapnel’ that accumulates in your purse or wallet and this is the perfect solution, all in a good cause. ‘We have had our red donation boxes in various businesses around the area for many years now and we are extremely grateful for the donations we receive,’ explained President, Michele Masson. ‘This is a new initiative we are setting up and we hope to get lots of people involved.’ Recently one of their volunteers brought in a large bottle which she had been filling for a couple of years with pennies. At the same time they received a box from someone bursting with change at one of their Christmas Appeal collection points. ‘This gave us the idea of offering people the opportunity to support us by providing them with a box to fill with coins.’ As a little additional incentive, everyone who joins in will be entered in a prize draw which will be held twice a year. If you would like to find out more about becoming a ‘Charity Support Saver’ or are interested in volunteering with HELP Vega Baja, you can contact Richard Garland at their San Miguel Centre on 966 723 733 or email them at office@helpvegabaja.com or you can visit the HELP Vega Baja Facebook page. Donations in 2017

It was a good year in 2017 for the charity which has been supporting people in the Vega Baja for 36 years. In 2017 they donated, in total, over €30,500 to good causes and individuals in need. ‘We aim to continue to offer not only information and advice,’ says Michele, ‘but also to continue supporting those who find themselves in need of our help,

in Orihuela Costa The Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández, has announced that this week the removal of illegal rubbish dumped in Orihuela Costa will begin. The Councillor stressed that "the residents have highlighted this problem and we will act immediately to remove the debris that has been deposited over time and try to stop the damage these people do to our environment.” The work programme, which will last between three and four days, will consist of three specific actions. The first one will be in the landfill located on a plot in the PAU 26. It is a municipal plot that has an area of 46,500 m2. The detected waste materials are plastics, household goods, debris, plant remains and tires and the technicians in the area estimate the volume of waste at 44 tons all existing in the landfill. The Councillor explained that after cleaning, "we will have erased the great visual impact that could be seen from the AP-7 highway, while environmentally we will landscape the area and restoration the environment." Another of the illegal landfills identified is in the same area and in this case, the waste dumped there has led to

HELP’s flyer advertising the new initiative including other charities.’ HELP have a good relationship with social services which means that they are often contacted about particular families who are struggling and need help. They have published a full list of the donations made throughout 2017 and these can be found on their Facebook page and website https://www.helpvegabaja.com . ‘Obviously we owe a debt of gratitude to everyone in the community who continue to support us and our team of volunteers,’ says Michele. Suzanne O’Connell

Councillor checks sites "a degeneration and degradation of the environment that is clearly visible from the AP-7 toll road and from existing nearby homes," Fernandez said, adding that “it is an open area with easy access, into which it is easy to deposit the kinds of waste found, such as plastics, debris, garden cuttings and household goods. Fernández explained that the third

rubbish dump is located in a municipal urban plot of an approximate area of 12,000 m2, destined for public recreational land and belonging to the partial Plan H-1 Villarosa sector. "The dumping of rubbish here has led to a significant degradation of the environment which brings with it the possibility of risks to public health. The poor condition of the area can be a risk to public health, taking into account that many people live in homes in near

proximity to this place and that residents are exposed directly to the physical and chemical effects of the waste, with the increased presence of rodents and the proliferation of mosquitoes that breed and multiply in this type of environment “. The Councillor for the Environment also indicated that the cost of these works will exceed 6,000 euros and involves the “removing, transporting and depositing of the debris at the legal authorised waste site”. With numerous illegal rubbish dumps scattered across the Orihuela Costa, residents are hoping these initial steps by the Department of the Environment will lead to more of the empty parcels and pockets of wasteland being cleared. Currently, almost every area of the coast has a places where builders and unscrupulous residents have systematically dumped rubbish under the cover of darkness.

During the weekend of the 20th and 21st January many people travelled from Torrevieja to Madrid to help promote the city at one of the world’s largest tourist exhibitions. As well as having a stall in the exhibition centre itself, dance groups and bands from Torrevieja took part in the procession through the centre of Madrid. Representatives from the tourist centre were there to tell people about the town. This year, Torrevieja was being promoted as a centre of the fishing industry and celebrated for the natural beauty of its lakes. Suzanne O’Connell

Ex mayor in the dock again The ex-mayor of the town, Pedro Hernández Mateo, (picture below) has been called back to court. He is accused of not holding 11 meetings or plenos between 2003 and 2007. The mayor has already served three years in jail for previous irregularities. Pedro Hernández Mateo (PP party) is accused of not fulfilling his duties during the time that he was in power. The irony is that the original denuncia that was filed back in 2006 was done so by the current mayor, José Manuel Dolón, when he was a councillor for the opposition. The mayor is required to ensure that a council meeting is held every month. This is called the pleno and takes place in the town hall. All elected councillors are present and aspects of town

Dolón and his lawyer are asking for Hernández Mateo to be prevented from holding public office for four years

management are debated. The public are also welcome to attend this monthly event. The rule applies to every jurisdiction of over 20,000 inhabitants. A requirement that Torrevieja fulfils quite easily. The pleno provides an opportunity for those in

opposition and local people to question policy and the actions of the ruling party and, as such, is a key activity for fulfilling local democracy. The lawyer defending Hernández Mateo, claims that the absence of meetings coincided with holiday periods during which the majority of town hall staff were not available. It is claimed that business continued to be conducted but in extraordinary meetings or in the subsequent pleno and that this procedure was agreed by everyone but Los Verdes (The Green Party). During the period 1988 to 2011 the PP party had an absolute majority and it is claimed that the lack of meetings was never in order to avoid the democratic process. José Manuel Dolón and his council, on the other hand, claim that there was no official record of agreement of the cancellation of meetings and even with the majority support that the PP commanded at the time, lack of these meetings prevented oversight of actions and decisions being taken. During this period, José Manuel Dolón had been active in challenging the mayor and questioning his oversight. Dolón and his lawyer are asking for Hernández Mateo to be prevented from holding public office for four years as a result of his failure to observe requirements. He is already disqualified from holding public office for 11 years as a result of him being found guilty of corruption in relation to the awarding of the rubbish collection service in Torrevieja in 2004. Two women workers die in border stampede Two women carrying goods between Morocco and Spain's Ceuta enclave were killed on Monday in a stampede at the border between the two countries, a rights group and officials said. The stampede took place at the Tarajal II crossing for pedestrians between the Moroccan border town of Fnideq and Ceuta, rights activist Mohamed Benaissa said. Two women in their 40s named Ilham and Souad, both from Fnideq, were killed, the head of Morocco's Northern Observatory for Human Rights said.

Known as "mule women" on the Spanish side of the border and "hamalat" or porters in Morocco, these impoverished women eke-out a living lugging backbreaking goods between the two countries. Ilham and Souad were about to cross the border with merchandise when the stampede occurred. Local officials said in a statement that authorities were investigating the deaths. Last year, at least four female porters were trampled to death in crushes at the same border crossing.

The porters often carry loads much heavier that their own weight strapped to their backs. It is estimated that around 15,000 female porters tread the route between Ceuta and Morocco, even if the daily number is lower after the Spanish authorities established a limit of 4,000 people per day. Rights groups have repeatedly denounced the work as "humiliating", saying it is tantamount to trafficking tolerated by the authorities. Watchdogs say the women are being exploited by powerful interests.

Two Spanish towns have made it into the TripAdvisor global list of 'top emerging holiday destinations' for 2018, voted among a total of 44 from four continents. Nerja (Málaga province), a coastal town near the Granada border which has lost none of its traditional Spanish charm, is number four in Europe and ninth worldwide, according to votes on the travellers' review site. The provincial capital of Cádiz on the south coast, to the west of Gibraltar, has been chosen as eighth in Europe in the Travellers' Choice Emerging Destinations list, now in its sixth year. 'Emerging destinations' are worked out using an algorithm which measures positive reviews on accommodation, restaurants and general attractions, overall interest in searches and bookings, and how far these aspects

have increased since the previous year. Japan's Ishigaki Island is number one in the world for emerging destinations across the board, and the Polish port city of Gdansk – formerly known as 'Danzig' – is number one for Europe and fifth in the world. Kapaa, Hawaii is the second-best emerging destination for 2018, followed by Nairobi (Kenya) and Halifax (Canada). After Gdanks, the Costa Rica capital of San José is sixth worldwide, followed by the Latvian capital of Riga seventh and Rovinj (Croatia) eighth. Along with Gdansk, Nerja and Cádiz, other top emerging destinations in Europe – along with the aforementioned Rovinj and Riga – are Catania (Italy), the Croatian capital of Zagreb, and the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana.

The Stagestruck Theatre Group started the new year by donating €2,000 to the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association. The donation was accepted by the President of the AFA Alzheimer Association. Unfortunately this year they had to cancel their 2017 pantomime. However, they still continued with a couple of Showcase revues at Leaf’s bar in Quesada along with their Murder Mystery evenings. Stagestruck has now started rehearsals

for their summer show which will take place in May at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. The show is a musical comedy with an original script written by Director Leigh Humphries. The production is called ‘From a Jack to a King’ and is set in an East End of London pub during the 1960s. It features a range of comical characters as well as songs from the era. The story follows the ups and downs in the lives of its landlord and landlady and their dealings with their customers. If you would like to come and watch the show then tickets will be available by emailing Leigh at leigh.humphries58@gmail.com and she will add you to the mailing list. More jobs but less security as crisis lingers Nearly 20 employment contracts were signed in Spain in the first 11 months of 2017. The total for the year will be around 22 million – a new record. Few figures better explain the dominant trend in the Spanish job market in recent years: robust recovery offset by a large number of temporary jobs and plenty of parttime employment among people who want to work more hours, as well as by stagnant wages. Overall, 2017 has seen significant improvement in the Spanish job market with the number of people signed on with the country’s social security scheme – a key indicator of net job creation – up by over 630,000, a rise of 3.58 percent. And the unemployment rate is down more than 10 percentage points since the peak of the country’s economic crisis, although at 16.4 percent it remains among the highest in the European Union and among developed countries in general. “At this stage of emerging out of the crisis this is within normal limits. The growth of temporary work is a characteristic feature,” explains Josep Oliver, professor of applied economics at the UAB University in Barcelona. At the beginning of 2014, job destruction meant just 23 percent of employment contracts in Spain were for part-time or temporary work, but that figure was already back up to 27.4 percent by summer of that year. “Spain lost 18 percent of its jobs [during the crisis]: this has recovered by 10 percentage points but there is way to go. Basically, we are still absorbing the

impact of the crisis,” Oliver notes, admitting that the key role played by precarious employment in the recovery process has been highly persistent. The nature of temporary work in Spain is also changing with the number of very short-term contracts on the rise: in 2017, contracts of five days or fewer made up close to 26 percent of the total, according to the Spanish public employment service (Sepe). Florentino Felgueroso, researcher with Spanish applied economics institute Fedea, says this phenomenon could be linked to the development of new technologies which permit “more rapid adjustment” and the signing of contracts via mobile phones. Felgueroso adds that access to stable employment has become more difficult. While the number of permanent contracts is on the rise, growth is not strong enough to reduce part-time and temporary employment levels. At the same time, the total number of such jobs that workers – and especially young people – have before they find a permanent, ongoing position is also growing. The researcher highlights data from his Nada es gratis (Nothing is free) blog to demonstrate this. From 2008 to 2016, people had to spend 94 months in parttime or temporary employment before finding a permanent position. From 2001 to 2007, this figure was 57 months. The other key figure is that only 36% of employment contracts signed every month are actually new contracts. The rest are contract renewals signed by people who are still hoping for to find permanent work. And landing a permanent job does not always equate to stability. As Inmaculada Cebrián, economics lecturer at the University of Alcalá, point out, just 40 percent of permanent positions in Spain last more than two years. While she does note this figure is from 2015 and the economy recovery may improve this situation, she believes “rough data” shows that employment quality has seen little improvement. “There has been little change in the pattern in Spain,” she says. The one segment of the labour market which appears to have weathered the economic crisis is part-time work. This was the only type of work which withstood the peak of the crisis, even seeing growth.

www.costablancapeople.com

There has now been a slight reduction in part-time work but chronic under-employment continues to exist: some 60 percent of people on part-time contracts would like to work more. But the high percentage of temporary contracts hides the drop in under-employment. Carlos Martín, head of economics at the Spanish general workers union, the CC OO, notes the percentage of casual and temporary workers is already higher than it was before the crisis among young people and in the manufacturing, retail, transport and hospitality sectors – precisely those industries which have seen higher than average social security affiliation in recent months. The labour cost issue While the Spanish government tends to highlight data which shows a rise in permanent contracts, it is also working to improve job quality, with one proviso: any rise in employment costs must not jeopardize the current rate of employment creation of around half a million jobs a year. After the holiday period, the government plans to continue negotiations aimed at a creating a single model for temporary contracts. It is also looking at punishing firms that abuse the system by imposing higher social security contributions on them. In addition, the government has announced that the national minimum wage, currently €707 a month, will rise to €850 a month by 2020. Oliver with the UAB University believes this is an important step in showing businesses that recovery of lost competitiveness cannot be achieved by low labour costs alone. “They have to make productive investments,” he argues. This year Spain registered its fifth straight quarter of falling competitiveness against fellow EU members despite falling unit labour costs. For Martín, the rise in the minimum salary comes too late. He decries the fact that Spain is coming out of this crisis more slowly than was the case with the previous two crises, putting this down to the fact that “internal demand is less important.” With exports doing more to drive growth, the role of the Spanish workforce is less important.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Early in the week, the media made much of the fact that sterling was at its highest level against the US dollar since the EU referendum in June 2016. However, it remains down by a net 7% against the dollar and by an average of 10% against the other dozen most actively-traded currencies. The announcement of inflation rates did little to change the status of the pound. The headline rate of inflation slowed fractionally – from 3.1% to 3% and the pound ticked slightly lower immediately after the announcement before recovering. Input prices - the cost of materials and energy went up by just 0.1% in December while output - factory gate - prices rose by 0.4%. At the retail end, the retail price index was up by an annual 4.1%. The European Central Bank, shared the accounts of last month’s meeting; the report revealed that "It was suggested that the Governing Council's communication should be adjusted gradually over time to avoid sudden and unwarranted movements in financial conditions". Investors took this to mean that the ECB is preparing to wind down its quantitative easing programme, this time in a major way rather than just by shaving the monthly asset purchases. The stats from Euroland remain on or close to forecast – the seasonally-adjusted trade surplus in November was €22.5bn, Germany announced that wholesale prices were up by 1.8% in the year to December and inflation was steady at 1.7% (consumer price index) and 1.6% (harmonised index of consumer prices), Italian inflation was on target at 0.9% and Italy's trade surplus in December was almost unchanged at €4.8bn. Overall, Euroland inflation was in line with forecasts at 1.4%. The US had similarly positive data, but still became overshadowed by the euro’s surge. Consumer prices were up by 2.1% on the year, as expected, and the 0.4% monthly increase in sales was in line with forecast. The New York Federal Reserve's manufacturing index was down by two points from an upwardly-revised 19.6 and very close to forecast. US industrial production and capacity utilisation

were both stronger than expected while the US NAHB housing market index was on target at 72. The Federal Reserve's Beige Book assessment of the US economy was peppered with "modest" and "moderate" improvements. As expected by most market participants, the Bank of Canada increased its benchmark rate from 1.0% to 1.25% this week. Opinion was divided as to whether this was a good or a bad thing for the Canadian dollar: it vacillated back and forth across a range of more than two cents before settling. Having examined the BoC's statement, investors came to the conclusion that the tightening move was a one-off rather than a portent of further increases in the pipeline. As a result, the Loonie could manage no more than an average result on the day, losing two thirds of a cent to sterling and holding steady against the US dollar. Strong mortgage lending in November gave the Australian dollar a boost at the beginning of the week. This was bolstered by strong employment data as the week progressed. After the upwardly-revised addition of 63.6k jobs in November, the Australian economy added a further 34.7k in December. The only downbeat note was that unemployment ticked up to 5.5%, but these were good numbers: demographic breakeven requires only around 15k new jobs a month. The New Zealand dollar struggled on Monday before mounting a recovery, although there was nothing to indicate why this may have been the case. One of the few relevant ecostats, the GDT index of milk prices had little impact despite a 4.9% rise. The market similarly shrugged off the data showing that New Zealand business confidence slipped from 5% to -12%: This was attributed to business's inherent uneasiness about a Labour government; whether Jacinda Ardern’s imminent maternity leave has a longer term effect remains to be seen.

How to invest for the best returns in retirement: Reckless risk-taking or playing too safe can run your pot dry M

any retirees are at risk of bungling their pension finances by falling into one of two easily avoidable traps, according to new research. A 'risk‐averse retiree' who believes they are playing it safe by moving pension funds into cash accounts and a 'reckless retiree' who chases high returns are both at risk of running out of money in old age, says the study, by pension firm Royal London.

Where is a risk‐averse saver going wrong? People using pension freedoms are switching retirement savings into current accounts and letting them get gobbled up by low interest rates and inflation, previous surveys have shown. Pension freedoms launched in spring 2015 have given over‐55s far greater control over how they spend, save and invest their retirement pot. But more cautious retirees have simply moved funds into ordinary accounts with no clear purpose. Where is a risk‐taking investor going wrong? Adventurous investments in overseas property, forests, storage units, airport car park spaces and other offbeat assets can be very high risk ‐ and even the worst case scenario ‐ scams. Royal London warns the lure of higher returns can lead some people to take excessive risks in retirement. Where should a rational retiree invest? 'There’s a tension here. If you don’t take enough risk, there’s no way your money can grow enough to sustain a reasonable income long into retirement,' says Royal London. 'On the other hand, if you expose yourself to the risk of large losses early in retirement, you could end up in the same place with the money running out unexpectedly early'. This is when independent financial advice is vital and here at Seagate we can work with you to tailor‐make the right investment strategy for you. Thanks to John, who brought up the subject during a conversation, this article is about the curry leaf tree (Murraya koenigii), an aromatic leaf often used in Indian cuisine. The curry leaf tree, a native of India, is a small, evergreen tree in the citrus family (Rutaceae) with very pungent aromatic leaves. They have a distinct, spicy curry-like flavour and generally go by the name curry leaves. The fresh leaves are an indispensable ingredient in the delicious curries of Southern India and Sri Lanka (and absolutely necessary for the authentic flavour). Although most commonly used in curries, leaves from the curry tree can also be used in many other dishes to add spice. The leaves are best used fresh as they lose most of their aroma and delicate fragrance when dried. Because of their soft texture, the leaves do not need to be removed before serving, but can be eaten without any hazard. Curry powder is a British invention to imitate the flavour of Indian cooking with minimal effort. Some curry powders indeed contain curry leaves, but probably only for historic or linguistic reasons, since dried curry leaves lose their qualities within days. A typical curry powder derives its taste mainly from cumin, coriander, black pepper, chili, fenugreek, ginger, celery, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, anis, etc. in variable amounts. Since curry powder is not a traditional recipe, there is little consensus about what should go into it, and anyone is free to sell his own creation.

Description and Culture This tropical to sub-tropical tree is highly ornamental due to its compound leaves. It is slowgrowing and can be used as a hedge, an ornamental shrub or as a potted specimen tree. Whether grown in large pots or on the ground it does not spread very much laterally. Harvesting of leaves encourages new growth and the tree also

responds well to pruning, which is only necessary for shaping - To reduce the size or make it bushier. While this tree can grow to reach 15-20 ft. (4.7-6 m), you need only a small specimen to supply you with an abundance of leaves for your Indian dishes. In late spring to early summer the tree blooms with clusters of small, white, and sweetly scented

flowers that attract lots of butterflies. The flowers are followed by small purple/black shiny berries that are edible, but their seeds are poisonous. The shiny-black fruits are very nutritious, sweet and are eaten fresh.

However, they do have a characteristic odour which some find slightly unpleasant. The curry leaf tree needs warm temperatures with full sun to partial shade. The tree tends to be slow growing during the cold months - it may even drop most of its leaves during the winter and stop growing all together. It usually picks

back up in the spring and grows quickly during the summer. Young trees/saplings will need to be kept warm during the winter, but when a bit mature and established the tree can survive brief frosts and should grow fairly well in our mild coastal climate. It prefers an acidic, welldraining soil and regular water and fertilizer during the growing season. Water sparingly during the winter months and do not fertilize. Propagation Curry leaf trees are propagated by growing the small suckers from the base of the tree, by root cuttings, or by seed. When harvesting seeds the berries should be ripe and fresh. Plant either the whole fruit (or remove the pulp), sow as soon as possible and keep moist but not wet. Fresh curry leaf seeds have a very high germination rate, but the problem is that the seeds are only viable for a couple of weeks. Seeds from India or Sri Lanka are going to be dead before you can plant them, unless you know someone who will send them by airmail. Your best option if you want one of these trees is to search the internet for a Spanish supplier of seeds or young plants, or ask at the local nurseries/garden centres if they can get it for you. WELCOME TO GIJÓN with Vivalia Travel

Gijón is the largest city and municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. Early medieval texts mention it as "Gigia". It is located on the Bay of Biscay, approximately 20 km (12 mi) north of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias. Contemporary history In the 20th century, with the Spanish Civil War, the city supported the Republican faction. The army was located in El Coto. The resistance was eliminated in August 1936. Later,

the village was the capital of the Sovereign Council of Asturias and León until 20 October 1937, when the troops of General Francisco Franco occupied the city. Ferrous metallurgy was the main industry of Gijón from the last years of the 19th century until the last decades of the 20th. Uninsa was created in 1971, and it merged with Ensidesa. In the last years of the century was converted in Acer-

alia, and integrated in Arcelor. The city is situated on the coast of central Asturias, from sea level to an altitude of 513 metres at Picu Samartín and 672 metres at Peña de los Cuatro Jueces, bordered on the West by Carreño, the East by Villaviciosa, and to the South by Siero and Llanera The city is situated along the Asturian coast and is distinguished by the peninsula of Cimavilla (the original settlement) which separates the beach of San Lorenzo and adjacent neighbourhoods to the

east from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west. Economy For much of the 20th century the town was heavily dependent on mature heavy industries, but at the end of the Franco era, tertiary sector employment began to expand rapidly along with the city's

population which by 2007 stood officially at 277,897 for Gijón proper, and approximately 380,000 for the total Gijón agglomeration. The port is at the centre of many of the local businesses. Apart from directly port related activities, the economy is based on tourism, steel (Arcelor), other metallurgy, livestock rearing and fisheries. Climate Gijón has a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Atlantic coast of Spain, with cool summers and wet and mostly mild winters. The onshore flow from the Atlantic Ocean creates a cool summer and mild winter climate where severe heat and very cold temperatures are rare. The narrow temperature range is demonstrated by the record August temperature being only 6.4 °C warmer than the all-time record January temperature. Summer temperatures are very consistent as proven by the fact that the all-time warmest month of August 1997 had an average temperature of 20.9 °C and no month has ever been recorded at an average high above 24.7 °C in comparison to the 23.2 °C August normal high. Another clear underlining of the marine influence is that the coolest ever August has been as near the average as 17.9 °C

Spanish regions concerned about a hard Brexit Stalled investment, fewer tourists, and a drop in food industry exports – these are just a few of the concerns that Spain’s autonomous regions have about the potential economic impact of a hard Brexit. Around 40 regions from across Europe have analysed how they would be potentially hurt by Britain’s exit from the European Union in a new study coordinated by the European Committee of the Regions, the body which represents these regions in the EU. The document emphasises the “current uncertainty” in Brexit negotiations between London and Brussels and anticipates “immediate effects on commercial trade and the movement of people,” including tourists. Spain provided the greatest input in the text, with eight regions outlining their concerns. Catalonia however, while one of Spain’s wealthiest regions, did not participate. The region lost its autonomous powers after Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy activated Article

155 of the Spanish Constitution in response to the unilateral declaration of independence. Catalan members of the regional committee were ousted from government, which has impacted the region’s representation in Brussels.

These are the main findings. Madrid. According to the document, the two areas most affected by Brexit are trade and tourism. Madrid explains that the United Kingdom has been its main foreign investor since 2009 and Brexit could lead to a “possible sharp fall in the volume of investment from the United Kingdom, at least until the relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom is in full force and effect.” The premier of the Madrid region, Cristina Cifuentes, put a positive spin on Britain’s exit from the EU: “Many British companies may feel the need to set up in Madrid in order to serve the domestic market, given they will not be able to access the European market any longer from the UK.” To lessen the sweeping effects of Brexit, Madrid has created a plan in cooperation with the central government. The region is asking Brussels “to mitigate, in any way possible, the impact of a hard Brexit.” This would occur if the United Kingdom

leaves the European Union without any bilateral agreement, which would be very damaging to the European – and especially British – economy. Basque Country. This region has expressed concern about the impact of Brexit on the automobile, aerospace and energy sectors as well as on financial services and the rail industry. The United Kingdom is the fourth top destination for Basque exports and one of the most attractive regions for Basque investment. More than 50 Basque companies have offices in Britain. While there is no data on the financial impact, “the Basque Country will be directly affected by Britain’s exit from the EU”, the document maintains. The region is asking for “the necessary mechanisms” to be put in place so that regions and municipalities can also take part in the Brexit negotiations between the UK and EU negotiator Michel Barnier. Andalucía. The United Kingdom’s new status will affect foreign investment, agriculture, trade but most importantly the region’s relationship with Gibraltar, a British offshore territory on Spain’s southern coast. In the document, Andalucía points out that 58.7 percent of Spanish workers in Gibraltar will be negatively affected. Around 10,000 Spaniards cross the border daily to work in the British territory. The region notes that British tourism contributes 1.2 percent of its

GDP. The document also highlights the potential loss of subsidies from the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) when London no longer contributes to the budget, arguing losses could be as high as €190 million a year. As a solution, the regional premier Susana Díaz has put forward a plan “to influence the British market” with objectives and strategies, without providing more details. Andalucía joined other regions in Europe in calling for a European fund to mitigate the harmful effects of Brexit. Valencia. The sectors most affected will be agriculture, trade, tourism, health, education and social sectors. A large number of Spain’s British residents live in the Valencian community (100,000 – a third of the total) as it includes expat strong-holds such as Benidorm, Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa. The United Kingdom is also the region’s third most important export destination. The region worries that a “possible fall in tourism could affect the property market and services”. The regional government outlines a large number of regional contacts to try to soften the effects of Brexit and calls for Brussels to maintain the EU budget, whose framework after 2021 must be negotiated now. Balearic Islands. Its main areas of concern are the economy in general and more specifically tourism, property investment and boating activities. The

region says the service industry is also likely to be affected because tourism and related activities represent 80 percent of the region’s GDP. “Any change in the freedom of movement (of European citizens) will be felt, given that 25 percent of tourists are from the UK.” The UK is also the second biggest foreign investor in the region. Canary Islands. The regional government of Fernando Clavijo is concerned about the impact of Brexit on tourism, investment, alcohol, automobile and property industry. Like in other Spanish regions, the UK is the main destination of its food products. “A sharp withdrawal without a free trade agreement on goods and services could destroy this situation,” according to the document. Castilla-La Mancha. The region has emphasised the need to maintain European funds, which are at risk because the United Kingdom will no longer be making contributions, creating an annual hole of €10 billion in the EU budgets. Murcia. Agriculture and tourism are listed as the areas that will be most affected by Brexit. The United Kingdom is “the greatest source of tourists to Murcia (43 percent) and the second biggest importer”, adds the text. Like Castilla-La Mancha, the region warns against the loss of structural funds from the EU as a result of Brexit.

Trips and tours with a difference for 2018 Due to popular demand not one but two ‘Wine tasting with a difference’ tours are continuing to be offered in the New Year, with the next one taking place on Friday 16th February 2018. The first tours of the year sold out within days and with so many people calling to book places more trips have quickly been organised to avoid disappointment. As part of her desire to help the expat

community to discover the real Spain, local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo is offering a range of tailored trips and tours that aim to provide something completely different to those organised by large tour companies. These aim to discover the hidden gems of Spanish heritage and culture, with traditional food and wine weaved in for good measure. For many years Begona has been an

integral link between the local Spanish and ex-pat communities offering Spanish language and Spanish cooking lessons. It is the popularity of these courses and the influence of her students that has led to Begona organising tailored trips and tours. The vineyard and wine tasting tours take place at Bodega Florentino Perez in La Mancha and they are a day-trips like no other – and at just 23 euros per person are excellent value. Located in La Finca ‘El Cercao’ and nestled among its 18 hectares of vineyards and surrounded by a totally natural environment, the Bodegas Don Florentino are located between vineyards, with a large garden and outdoor patio in front of the impressive main facade. The bodega celebrates an entire family dedicated to the cultivation of the vine for several generations. The land of Don Quixote offers a unique place to relax and enjoy the best gastronomy of the local country side accompanied by some of the finest wines of the region. The tour, which Begona hopes to run at least monthly, will begin with a typical Spanish breakfast en route and before the afternoon tour, the group will head to Chinchilla for a morning tour of this

picturesque village courtesy of an official local guide. You will discover the hidden gems nestled in this beautiful location before heading to the bodega. The group will then begin its extensive guided tour of the vineyard and wine producing facilities. The tour will cover all aspects of wine production from the type of grape, how it is grown, nurtured and harvested to the wine making process and storage. The group will then experience an eatall-you-can traditional five-course lunch of typical Spanish fayre, accompanied by wines of the bodega. There is then the opportunity to visit the official bodega store and buy any of the wines produced. Granada Trip Begona’s first guided trip of 2018 will be to the beautiful city of Granada pn 22nd and 23rd February. The trip includes a bed and breakfast stay at a 4 star hotel in the heart of the city. Entrance to the Alhambra Palace with an English speaking guide is also included in the price of 135e per person. These trips are expected to sell out fast, so speedy booking is advisable; to do so please call Begona on 622 188 772. As always with Begona’s trips and tours several local pick up and drop off points are available for passengers and range from Los Alcazares to Torrevieja.

I hate him so why do I still love him

Happier alone My wife and I separated just before Christmas. It was at my instigation. Our marriage has been tested recently, with her backing her family up in a row involving me and her brother. As far as I am concerned he has always had a problem with me suggesting I am no good for her and not her class. I felt she should have sided with me. The lack of loyalty has crushed me. Since then I have been miserable and left. Now everyone in her family thinks I left to be with another woman, which is typical of them. I left because I was unhappy.

I found out my husband was seeing another woman - he said he was going to call it off, but didn’t. He’s lied and lied to me repeatedly, telling me it was me he wanted to be with, only for me to catch him at it again. I threw him out and over weeks of serious talks I let him back because he said it was me he loved, and he’d made a mistake. Then I discovered romantic texts she sent to him, and replies in the same vein. I hate him so much, but I also can’t help still loving him. I never thought I would react in this way. Am I an idiot? No, you’re not an idiot. Of course you still love him. It’s not easy to switch off your feelings. And yes, you will be feeling hate. Hate is a powerful emotion very similar to love. In order to hate someone, you must first have loved them. You are going through a rollercoaster of emotions at the moment. You will find the strength one day to finish this relationship, as you need to love yourself more.

Typically and statistically, it takes a lot for a man to leave a marriage. Take the time apart to see how you really feel. If things have gone unsaid, you may still need to speak to your wife about why you left and she needs to understand you feel betrayed. Ultimately though, if you are happier alone and feel you have made the right decision then you should stick to it. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. Spain overtakes US as second most-visited country in world Spain’s tourism sector is on a roll, and it looks like the good times will extend to 2018. Last year, industry activity grew 4.4 percent on the back of historic highs, both in terms of international visitors and tourist spending. This year, the business lobby Alliance for Excellence in Tourism (Exceltur) is expecting a further rise of 3.3 percent. Last year, industry activity grew 4.4 percent on the back of historic highs, both in terms of international visitors and tourist spending. This year, the business lobby Alliance for Excellence in Tourism (Exceltur) is expecting a further rise of 3.3 percent. This industry leader has also estimated the impact of the Catalan crisis on tourism to be in the range of €319 million. If the crisis were to persist, the growth forecast for 2018 would shrink to 2.8 percent. Even though the secessionist bid shaved three tenths of a percentage point from tourism activity in 2017, it was still a record year for Spain: over 82 million international visitors, an 8.9 percent leap from 2016, and a 1.5 percent increase in average spending per tourist, according to tourism ministry estimates released this week. This makes Spain the world’s second-most popular tourist destination, behind France and ahead of the United States. The tourism industry’s share of GDP has increased to 11.5 percent, representing €134 billion. And industry growth resulted in 77,501 new jobs in 2017, said Exceltur. Political instability in the last quarter of the year, following the illegal independence referendum of 1st October, has negatively affected international tourism, particularly in geographically close markets like France, where visitor numbers were down 19.7 percent year on year in the October– November period. German visitor numbers fell 14

percent and the UK’s retreated 8 percent. Asian markets sent fewer visitors as well. However, tourists from the Americas grew notably in number, particularly those from Argentina (a 74 percent rise) and the United States (18.2 percent).

Slower growth in 2018 Exceltur said that 2018 “will be another excellent year” and predicted 3.3 percent growth for the tourism sector, higher that the forecast for the Spanish economy as a whole but lower than in the last two years – and that is without factoring in the potential effects of a protracted crisis in Catalonia. The lower growth figure can be partially explained by a gradual recovery of alternative destinations that compete directly with Spain, such as Turkey, where terrorist attacks have driven tourism down. “The challenge for the tourism industry now is to ensure sustainable growth with a view to the future,” said José Luis Zoreda, executive vicepresident of Exceltur, at a news conference. Despite the optimistic forecast, Exceltur is warning about a drop in revenues in early 2018: 10 percent for hotels, 6.8 percent for car rental companies, and 3.5% for transportation firms. The business association said “there will be staff adjustments” to make up for these losses.

Britons continue to choose the Costa Blanca

Iglesias and Kournikova release picture of newborn twins Second-generation Spanish pop legend Enrique Iglesias and his retired tennis champion partner Anna Kournikova have released the first photographs of their newborn twins, Lucy and Nicholas. Russian model and sportswoman Anna and the children's father, son of worldfamous crooner Julio Iglesias, decided

For many Brits aiming to purchase a second property in 2018, the idea of owning a sun-drenched home within a short distance of the sea is the dream. But with the price of the average house in England now £243,339 (HM Land Registry, November 2017), turning this dream into reality is unlikely. More and more Brits therefore are heading abroad to Spain to get their dream beach house with the holiday hotspot of the Costa Blanca on Spain's south-eastern coast, also a favourite second home destination. The Costa Blanca, or 'White Coast', has seen its popularity rise once again with a record 6.3 million foreign visitors in 2017 according to the Valencian Tourism Agency. "The Costa Blanca remains very much at the top of the list for British second home buyers. British citizens are looking for quality homes that offer great value. Spacious, beachfront homes are the biggest winners and when you can buy the same house for half the price

overseas, it makes you think twice," said Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director, Taylor Wimpey, Spain. Indeed, official figures reveal that foreigners were the biggest buyers on the Costa Blanca with 4,906 homes sold in Q3 2017, a 7.5 percent rise in sales to foreigners compared to the same period in 2016, recorded the Ministry of Development. With data from Kyero.com revealing that the average property price in Alicante province is just €225,000 (£200,000) and properties in hotspots such as Torrevieja and La Marina costing just €132,000 (£117,000) and €148,000 (£130,000) respectively, it's not hard to see why Brits are flocking to the Costa Blanca. Always conscious of buyers' budgets, leading house-builder, Taylor Wimpey España, operational in Spain for 60 years, is answering this rising demand for second homes in the area with a selection of seaside properties, far more affordable than those in England.

Home-working tax breaks Madrid is considering offering tax breaks to companies which encourage working from home, or remotely, and may include those which give employees the option of flexitime or staggered hours. The city hall is also looking at ways of making buses cheaper and more userfriendly, and encouraging car-pooling, including possible reduced car-parking fees for those who share vehicles. At the moment, the sustainable development department is in talks with major national and multi-national firms such as Telefónica, the BBVA bank, transport giant Ferrovial, department store El Corte Inglés, and State-owned financial entity Bankia. The move is twofold: firstly, to cut traffic, and therefore air pollution, in the city, and secondly, to improve quality of life by allowing workers more free time or family time. It is working with the More Family

Foundation (Fundación Más Familia) on how to encourage companies to provide a better work-life balance. As well as promoting public transport and car-sharing, the city council wants to encourage the use of bicycles and motorbikes in companies whose employees need to travel as part of their job. At least three or four meetings between different firms before summer are likely to be on the agenda so they can share ideas – the aim being that those who get ahead in flexible working and sustainable transport will be able to set an example and create healthy 'competition' between corporations in this respect. Companies have reported to the city council that younger workers are those who would be most keen to embrace working from home and flexitime options.

the picture of Enrique lying down with one of the babies next to his face. Anna published another on Instagram at the same time, showing herself kissing the other baby. They have not said which child is in which picture, but both the Miami-based parents have captioned their pictures with, “My ray of sunshine.” Madrid-born Enrique's picture netted nearly a half a million 'likes' in the first hour – although this is unsurprising, given that he has 11.9 million followers on Instagram. Between them, the couple – who kept their pregnancy secret until 16th December, when their children were born – amassed over 6,000 'likes' in just three minutes. Anna, 36, and Enrique, 42 have been together since 2001, but Lucy and Nicholas are their first children. Moscow-born Anna retired from tennis in 2003 after winning two Grand Slam doubles, but Enrique – most famous among non-Spanish fans for his catchy number Bailamos – remains active in his career and launched his new single, El Baño, last Friday.

Your home is ready to sell, but are you? Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!

You’ve prepared your home ready to be sold. You’ve listed it for sale. All you need now is a buyer! But, there’s one thing you’re forgetting…. Preparing yourself emotionally for this journey. When selling a home, you have a lot more invested than just money. It’s the memories that you’ve made there. Some people have a hard time letting go, and need help detaching themselves from their home, when the time comes to listing it on the market for sale, and going through the negotiations of an offer. I’ve seen many times, when a buyer made an offer, and the homeowner was too emotionally attached to make an informed decision of acceptance. Instead of thinking it through clearly as a business deal, they made an emotional choice of declining what was, a realistic offer. After all, who can put a value on their memories, right? Well actually, wrong! Buyers won’t pay you more, just because you’ve had many happy times there! Trust me – they won’t! Instead, what the homeowner really needed to do, was put things into perspective of what they actually wanted to accomplish out of a sale. What is the real reason you’re selling your home? Ask yourself these questions: 1. Is it to release capital? 2. Is your current property too big, and you need to downsize,

2 Bed, 2 Bath Bungalow In Guardamar Del Segura, Costa Blanca SSPSPF20/4660

or maybe the other way around and you need a bigger home? 3. Or is it to be closer to family? 4. Drowning in debt? Would you be better off financially, selling now and paying off your mortgage? 5. When would you like to be in your next home, or perhaps return to your own Country? Within 3 months? 6 months? Or even a year?

If you can see yourself in any of these situations, you need to focus on your goal of ultimately achieving a sale, and how to reach that goal. No-one wants to give their house away, but you still need to be sensible about pricing. Treat the negotiations as a business deal, and leave your heart out of the equation. Remember, home is where you make it, and soon you’ll be making wonderful new memories in your next home, and think about how great you’ll feel when you achieve your goal! Local horse rescue centre story on British television The English couple who run Spain’s only registered horse rescue foundation are to feature in Channel 5’s popular Bargainloving Brits In The Sun television series this week. Sue and Rod Weeding, who moved to the Costa Blanca to retire but launched Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in 2008 after witnessing horse cruelty, are thrilled to be included in the first episode of season three, launching on Thursday. Film crews visited the Rojales-based rescue centre multiple times last year, capturing the highs and lows of the Weedings’ life caring for more than 100 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys. “We are very excited to be on English TV. We’re hoping that people will see the program, enjoy it and maybe understand a little bit of what we’re trying to do here,” Sue said. “It’s definitely not easy, but we will continue to move forward to create animal welfare in Spain. This is our long-term goal, to continue working with Spanish police to rescue abused, neglected and abandoned equines – and at some point get some sort of recognition from the government or councils. “We are on call 24 hours a day now because we are providing a service to Spanish police. But unlike England, where charities enjoy a certain status and get help, here in Spain we have

absolutely nothing. It’s just people like Rod and I doing it, using our own money. “But we are giving it everything we’ve got. We must move animal welfare forward – and we are doing it with a passion.” Bargain-loving Brits In The Sun episode one airs on Thursday, 25th January at 8pm on Channel 5. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work. Donations of cash or items for the centre’s network of six charity shops across the Alicante province are gratefully welcomed. A pick-up service is available to collect large donated items such as furniture and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased in-store. Anyone interested in making a donation, becoming a long-term sponsor, or volunteering at the rescue centre or in the charity shops can call Sue on 652 021 980. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. A free horse tour with centre co-founder Rod Weeding begins at 2pm and refreshments are available in the café. For more details and directions, visit www.easyhorsecare.net. Lidl is first store in Spain to sell only free-range eggs German supermarket chain Lidl has become the first store in Spain to refuse to sell any produce from battery hens. Grocery retailers in Spain have all agreed that by the year 2025, only free-range hen produce will be on their shelves, but Lidl has decided to start seven years early. Mercadona and El Corte Inglés had agreed to progressively ensure no battery-hen goods were stocked between now and the 2025 deadline. Director-general of Lidl in Spain, Miguel Paradela, says the chain is 'committed to animal welfare and sustainability' without compromising on its mission of 'offering the best quality at the lowest prices'. All eggs retailed in Lidl stores in Spain come from four national producers, including the San Miguel and García

Puente farms, and between them have invested over €40 million in adapting their methods and premises to Lidl's requirements that none of their hens

are caged. Paradela says even in times of high demand, the four farms' investments mean they are able to cope and Lidl will not have to resort to importing

eggs to stock its shelves. Lidl now guarantees all eggs are freerange, as it has stopped selling those marked as 'category 3', or produced by battery hens. Only 'category 0', which are organic, 'category 1', from hens living in fields, and 'category 2', from hens in coops with outside space to move around in, will be retailed at Lidl. Ceasing to sell battery-hens' eggs has turned out to be a good business move: from a 7% market share in 2016, the store forecasts an increase to 13% minimum in 2018. Lidl in Spain now bears the AENOR kitemark, which comes with the official 'Animal Welfare' stamp. It is also committed to extend its animal care policies to other creatures, but has not revealed which as yet.

some of the families in their area and have for several years now, donated presents and supplies to needy families. So each year presents are wrapped and then handed to the local Social Worker and Christmas 2017 was no exception. The photo shows members of the Branch together with the local Social Worker Doña Librada Mira Iñesta and just a few of the many presents. Members of the Branch were pleased to hear that the children were delighted with all their presents. The Branch starts the New Year with a full social calendar and anyone who would like to come along to any events, please contact the secretary on secretary.hondonvalley3577@gmail.com or ring 648 86 02 51. The branch is happy to welcome new members each month and it is not necessary to have an Armed Forces background to join in all Legion events.

Ciudadanos would now be Spain’s top political choice If general elections were held in Spain now, Ciudadanos would be the most-voted party, according to a new voter intention survey by pollster Metroscopia. Albert Rivera’s (see pic right) party, which burst into the political scene during the economic crisis with a message of reform, would secure 27.1 per cent of the vote, followed by the Popular Party (PP) with 23.2 per cent and the Socialist Party (PSOE) with 21.6 per cent. Podemos, the other protest party to emerge from the crisis, would come in fourth with 15.1 per cent of support. The Metroscopia survey reflects a collective state of mind at a given point in time. At this time, there is nothing to suggest that Spain is going to hold early elections, nor are voters feeling the tension that comes before such a ballot. However, it is significant that for the first time, Ciudadanos shows up very clearly at the top of voter intention. A lot of that has to do with the party’s resounding success at the Catalan elections

of 21st December, when its local candidate, Inés Arrimadas, won the most votes and the most seats with a strongly pro-unity message (even if secessionist forces collectively secured enough seats for a parliamentary majority). The survey shows that many citizens appreciated Ciudadanos’clear, unin-hibited position in defence of Spain’s constitutional framework and against secession. Asked which party has an adequate project for the future of Spain, 44 per cent of respondents answered “Ciudadanos.” The conservative PP trailed far behind at 20 per cent. This perception held true to varying degrees among supporters of other parties: among PP voters, 68 per cent feel that Ciudadanos has a clear national project, compared with 58 per cent who feel the same way about the PP itself. Among PSOE voters, 44 per cent feel that Ciudadanos has a strong plan for the future of the country, compared with 43 per cent who think the Socialists’ project is better.

vote), another a centre-left alignment of Ciudadanos and PSOE (48.7 per cent). The data shows that Ciudadanos is taking votes away chiefly from the PP (23 per cent) but also from the PSOE (13 per cent) and Podemos (5 per cent). Voter loyalty is very high at 81 per cent: most of the people who voted for them in 2016 would do so again now. Albert Rivera also tops the approval ratings, followed by Pedro Sánchez of the PSOE, Mariano Rajoy of the PP and Pablo Iglesias of Podemos.

Declining support for the PP

The voter intention survey shows that Ciudadanos would be the most voted party in a majority of cities and towns with a population of 2,000 and over. It would also secure the greatest support across age groups and economic brackets.

This break with decades of two-party politics, when the PP and PSOE took turns in government, opens up possibilities for different parliamentary majorities. One would be a centre-right coalition of Ciudadanos and PP (50.3 per cent of the

The survey shows that nearly half the voters who supported Mariano Rajoy in the 2016 general elections have ceased supporting his Popular Party. The rise of Ciudadanos is eroding the government’s voter base: in November, 68% of PP voters said they would renew their support for the conservative party at the next elections. But this new survey shows this figure has dropped to 54 per cent.

Puigdemont cannot be sworn in remotely, say lawyers A new report by the parliamentary counsel at the Catalan regional assembly states that the Catalan premier cannot be invested remotely, dampening the hopes of Carles Puigdemont, who has been pushing to be sworn in from Belgium. Puigdemont fled to Brussels in late October following a unilateral declaration of independence to avoid facing charges of sedition, rebellion and misuse of public funds. At the snap regional election on 21st December, Puigdemont’s proindependence Junts per Catalunya won the second-highest number of seats and votes – behind the unionist party Ciudadanos – and he is now seeking to form a majority government with the support of pro-independence parties Republican Catalan Left (ERC) and CUP. However, the new document, written by eight lawyers, says a premier cannot be sworn in unless he is physically present in the chamber. The appointment of a premier must be “direct and personal,” otherwise it does not meet “statutory or

regulatory norms,” according to the report. While Puigdemont’s party supports a remote appointment, the ERC had said it would leave the decision in the hands of the lawyers. The report explains that the swearingin process is not simply a question of “verifying” or “confirming” a candidate as premier, but rather to “foster dialogue between the candidate and the deputies, so that the ensuing debate over their program can muster up the necessary support for them to be invested and retain confidence.” The text rejects the argument from Puigdemont’s supporters that this process can take place remotely or that another deputy could stand in place for the real candidate by reading out a statement. In the report, the parliamentary counsel avoid the semantic debate over what “in front of” means in a regulatory phrase that says candidates must defend their programs in front of the chamber. Instead they argue that “respect for the basic rules

of the parliamentary process makes it imperative not only that the protagonists attend the debate in person, but also that there be spoken, direct argumentation and the guarantee of immediacy so that everyone may see, feel and understand the debate in person.”

Other deputies The report, however, does not address whether the other absent deputies may delegate their vote if they cannot be present in the chamber. This decision, says the counsel, should be made by a transitional board of officers known as the Mesa de Edad (literally, board of the elders). Three deputies – Oriol Junqueras, Joaquim Forn and Jordi Sánchez – are currently in pre-trial detention in connection with the rebellion probe, while four more are in Brussels with Puigdemont. The lawyers indicate that under Article 93 of parliamentary bylaws a vote can only be delegated if the deputy is on maternity or paternity leave, sick or

“permanently incapacitated” – conditions which are not met by the Catalan deputies. The lawyers, however, support the “right to political participation of the affected deputies” and the “preservation of the parliamentary numbers," referring to the outcome of the December 21 election, which gave 37 seats to the prounity Ciudadanos, 34 to Junts per Catalunya, 32 to ERC, 17 to the Catalan Socialists (PSC), eight to the unaligned Catalunya en Comú-Podemos, four to the far-left CUP and three to the Popular Party.

Rajoy admits mistakes Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy recently admitted that his Popular Party (PP) has made mistakes in Catalonia, but said they were right to implement emergency powers under Article 155 of the Constitution to halt the illegal independence drive in the region. “We, as a party, have made mistakes; we admit it and we will have to learn from

them,” said Rajoy at a meeting of the national board of officials. “The response to this situation, as headed by the government, was good for Spain although it might not have been good for the PP.” Rajoy underscored that secessionists have dropped their plans for unilateral independence, and warned that the government will resort to the Constitutional Court if ousted Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont attempts to get himself sworn in remotely from Brussels, where he is living in self-imposed exile after fleeing to escape the Spanish justice system. He is wanted in Spain in connection with a criminal investigation into rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds during the independence drive. If Puigdemont is sworn in remotely, Article 155 will remain in place, prolonging the central government’s takeover of Catalan self-government, said Rajoy.

Seven minors arrested for arson Seven minors have been arrested in Callosa de Segura for setting fire to bins, a car and a house. It is estimated that the damage caused could exceed €20,000. Guardia Civil made the arrests after a series of arson attacks that began on Halloween night and continued until December 9th last year. In total, 19 large container bins, three small litter bins, a car and an abandoned house were set ablaze by the suspects – the youngest of whom is just 13 years old and is in unimpeachable with no criminal responsibility. The remainder of hte seven have been made available to the Office of the Children's Prosecutor of Alicante. The arson attacks began on the afternoon of October 31, 2017 when, in a systematic way, a series of intentional fires were set in the large container type bins and litter bins in various streets and parks of the town. The emergency services of the municipality were alerted up to eight times throughout that afternoon and early morning on November 1. The fires not only affected containers and bins, but one also spread to a vehicle near one of the burning containers, resulting in the car being completely destroyed. The attacks continued over the following weeks, until December 9. The damage, still awaiting confirmation to quantify in monetary terms, could exceed €20,000.

As a result of the numerous inquiries carried out by the officers involved in the Investigation from the Guardia Civil in Callosa de Segura, in collaboration with the Local Police, it has been possible to identify and locate the alleged perpetrators of the attacks. The detainees are all of Spanish nationality, aged between 13 and 16 – six of whom are boys and one girl. The investigation revealed that the minors decided to start the fires for fun and used firelighters doused in petrol.

Animals blessed in church The weekend saw Orihuela celebrate the traditional festival of the neighbourhood of San Antón, with the traditional "Despertá" beginning at 9:00 am after which, a mass was held in the hermitage with the blessing of the animals at 11.30 am. The Fiestas de San Antonio Abad is a tradition dating back centuries and is celebrated across Spain, however, with local parish named after the Saint, Orihuela has a particular affinity with the festival. If you are an animal lover, then there is nothing quite like seeing numerous pets gather to be blessed at the local church; cats, dogs, horses, hamsters,

lizards, snakes and chickens are all bought by their owners to be sprinkled with holy water and blessed by a priest. St Anton Abad, also known as Anthony the Great and St Anthony the Abbot is the patron saint of animals, with his day falling on 17th January. Born in 3rd Century Egypt, the monk is believed to have been the first to practice going into the wilderness to renew his faith through nature. In honour of the saint, horses are traditionally ridden through bonfires on the night before the official day on honouring the animals in Spain.

Menopause drug side-effects spark legal action Women prescribed a drug to help with the menopause which produced severe and often irreversible side-effects have banded together to take legal action against the Ministry of Health. Retailed as Agreal, the drug was withdrawn from sale in September 2005, but many suffered 'adverse psychiatric and neurological reactions', according to the group, because they were not warned about the dangers of taking it longterm. Many were prescribed Agreal when they did not suffer from hot flashes, or very few and not enough to concern them – often continuing to take the medication for up to 20 years. Agreal Luchadoras ('Agreal Fighters') and Enfermas del Agreal ('Agreal Sickness Patients') have appointed a solicitor, Francisco Villanueva, to represent their hundreds of members. The Health Ministry has been given 20 days to respond to their

complaint, in which they say their fundamental rights have been breached. Once a response is obtained, Villanueva will direct the legal action at the laboratory which

retails Agreal, Sanofis Aventis, which he says knew about the dangers of long-term consumption but failed to warn those prescribed. Criminal action has already been filed by other

patients, and a separate civil case is ongoing in Valencia. Villanueva says the serious side-effects of Agreal, the brand name of the drug Veralipride, are 'well documented', and he has even managed to gain access to confidential results of clinical trials in Sanofis Aventis' head offices in Paris, thanks to the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Long-term use, in relation to the side-effects, is considered in the case of Veralipride to be anything over three months. The Spanish Medications and Healthcare Products Agency (AEMPS) announced on 20th May, 2005 that it had decided to cease retailing Agreal after concluding that the risk-benefit balance was 'unfavourable' due to 'neurological reactions' caused by taking the drug and 'psychiatric effects' as a result of stopping it after taking it for a given period of time. Four months later, Agreal was taken off sale completely and was no longer dispensed in highstreet pharmacies.

Baby milk recalled in Salmonella scare Lactalis recalls over half a million products Food company Lactalis has recalled 550,000 products in Spain manufactured in its contaminated French plant. The products are sold under brand names Puleva Bebé, Sanutri and Damira and were made in the Lactalis factory in Craon, France.

News emerged today that Lactalis Nutrition Iberia, in tandem with the French and Spanish authorities, has recalled 550,000 products in Spain that are believed to have been manufactured with contaminated milk and which are in the process of being destroyed by an authorized waste management company. In Spain there has been one case of an infant affected by Salmonella, which, according to the analysis carried out by Lactalis, would be related to the same type of strain as the cases which appeared in France last year. On 11th December 2017, several batches of powdered infant formula were recalled from the Spanish market as a precautionary measure since they were made on the same production line as the batches of French brands caught up in the salmonella contamination. It wasn’t until December 21st that it was announced that the company was widening the recall to cover all products manufactured in the French plant from February 15th 2017. On January 12th, the company agreed with the French authorities to withdraw all products and, subsequently, close the factory to carry out an "exhaustive disinfection". Lactalis says it is "eradicating" the cause of the contamination and investing "all necessary means" to guarantee the plant's safety, alongside the French Ministry of Health so that it approves the action plans and controls that will be implemented before restarting production.

Spain top of the world for transplants – again

San Miguel man pays €90,000 so prostitute doesn’t tell wife

Spain is still number one in the world for transplant operations, having beaten its own records for the fifth year on the trot, and waiting lists for adults are gradually going down, says the National Transplant Organisation (ONT). A total of 2,183 donors in 2017 meant surgeons were able to carry out 5,259 transplant operations in what turned out to be a record year. With 46.9 donors per million inhabitants, 2017 has seen the highest number yet – well above the 43.4 per million in 2016 and more than double the European Union average of 21.5 per million. As many as six people donate organs and 14 transplant operations are carried out every day in Spain, and patients on the waiting lists have gone down from 5,480 to 4,896, mostly because of being able to undergo their transplants in a much quicker timeframe rather than because of patients dying before an organ becomes available. But waiting lists for children are growing, with the 58 from 2016 rising to 74 children in 2017. The vast majority of transplants were kidneys, which often involve live donors, with 3,269 operations, a rise of 9 percent on the previous year. Liver transplants – which can also involve live donors where a small piece of

A man from San Miguel de Salinas is reported to have paid €90,000 to a prostitute to keep his infidelity secret. Guardia Civil have since arrested the woman, along with another man and both are accused of extortion and threats. It is alleged that the pair used blackmail to obtain the money as well as two high performance cars. The victim, who lives in San Miguel De Salinas, admitted to hiring the sexual services of a prostitute who worked in a Torrevieja club. The woman is said to have threatened to reveal the truth about their illicit encounter to the man’s wife and within a year, she and another man had extorted a vast sum of money and two high end cars from the man. The investigation began after the man was forced to make a denuncia in December 2017. He alleged he was being blackmailed by a prostitute he had met at a Torrevieja nightclub a year previously. The man began meeting her regularly

the organ is used rather than the entire liver – were the second-most common in 2017 with 1,247 operations carried out, an increase of 8 percent. Lung transplants went up by 18 percent year on year, to 363. Every single one of Spain's 17 autonomously-governed regions reported more than 35 donors per million inhabitants, and nine of them showed numbers way above the national average. In Cantabria, 74.1 donors per million residents meant the northern coastal

region had the highest figures in the country, followed by La Rioja's 71 per million and the Basque Country and Navarra joint third with 70.3 per million. Spain is the only country in the world which carries out more than 100

transplants per million inhabitants, averaging 113 across the regions. But the ONT is still not satisfied – its leader, Dr Beatriz Rodríguez-Gil, wants to see numbers climb to 50 donors per million inhabitants and 5,500 transplant operations carried out annually within the next four years. This will involve even closer cooperation between the ONT and A&E departments, and finding ways to increase the number of live donors. This is especially important with children, says Dr Rodríguez-Gil. “Spain's low infant mortality rate – which is very positive indeed – does mean we have to explore other ways of finding organs for children who need them, such as greater contact with other countries,” she says. The ONT is also focusing on transplants for those affected by the Hepatitis C virus, who are 'in a very delicate situation', and on a process known as 'organ rescue', whereby organs not initially considered valid for donation can be 'resuscitated'. “What we would call a resounding success would be increasing the number of transplant operations without having to increase the number of donors,” says Dr Rodríguez-Gil, “because this would mean making greater use out of all organs donated.”

after he had first hired her services and each time, the woman would ask for large sums of money by threatening to go to the man’s wife if he did not agree to pay. Because of this, the man deposited the sum of €40,000 into the woman’s account, and again a sum of €25,000 into a separate account in the name of a man known to the prostitute. Not satisfied, the woman asked again for more money – this time for €25,000 in cash which the man paid. She also borrowed two of the man’s high-end vehicles which were never returned to him. After numerous efforts to identify and locate the two alleged perpetrators, a 32 year old woman of Romanian nationality and a Bosnian man of 36, both were this week arrested and charged for the alleged crimes of extortion and threats. Both have already been brought to court to testify and given provisional release on charges while they await trial.

Josh via email asks: Hello, I have read many times your suggestions to run Malwarebytes but when I have run the scan the number of items listed is very long and very daunting! Are there any things I should watch out for? Aunty Says: Hi Josh. Malwarebytes will find things like Spyware and Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPS) and it will often find a lot of things which have built up simply by using the internet. I always leave Malwarebytes to get on with its job without even looking at what it has found and I’ve yet to run into any problems after all these years. Carol via email asks: A few months ago I bought a new Lenovo laptop with Window 10 and for an extra €45 they changed it to English from Spanish. I have recently seen a notice saying I only have 28 days (and counting) to activate and when I clicked on “activate now” it said something like “enter a valid code number” which I did not have. I took it back to the shop and they said they installed the code and everything was fine but has come up again and when I called into the shop again they said they were waiting for a

new DVD to reinstall it and not to worry as it is problem with Microsoft. It is now 6 weeks later and I am still waiting for a call, but to be honest I am now thinking this is a bit of a fib. They also told me the problem is because the language

was changed but I have read in your column that this can be done easily. Could you let me know what I should do? Aunty Says: Hi Carol. Take the laptop back to the shop and ask them nicely to stop messing you about and to re-install the genuine copy of Win 10 that would have come with the laptop. Ask them to enter the code, activate and then validate Windows via the Microsoft website. If they refuse then something is not quite right. Explain politely that you will need to contact Microsoft to ask them what you should do. Those good old days of free ‘trial’ and ‘cracked’ copies of Windows are rapidly fading and

laptops haven’t come with any Windows discs or activation codes for a very long time, the activation for Windows 10 is built into the laptop’s electronics. Changing language is free, not exactly simple, but free. Mark via email asks: Hello Aunty. I have a slight problem with my Dell laptop which I have had for 4 years it has started to show a flashing green light on the front which I think is the battery symbol. It occasionally changes to an orange light, and when it does I get a warning come up that the battery is critical and to plug into the mains supply. I have it plugged in to the wall at all the time and switch it off at night but I am worried that I may damage the laptop. Please can you advise what I should do? Aunty Says: It sounds like it maybe time for a new battery Mark, but as you are running your laptop only from the mains then you may as well take your battery out. If you flip your laptop over you should see a spring loaded catch and probably a similar lock that you simply slide and lift the battery out. As always email me with your questions at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.co m and I’ll see what I can do.

We often see cars which appear to be overloaded, whether carrying large bundles of suitcases on the roof rack, or oversized furniture from your favourite store, but there are laws which need to be adhered to, on account of the risks in carrying loads in vehicles which are not suitable. If you are carrying an unsafe load, not only will you be fined, your vehicle will be immobilised until such a time as you can transport it safely.

To make things clearer, here is what the law states about carrying articles in a vehicle. 1. The load must not modify or interfere with the car's driving stability while driving. 2. The load cannot be at risk of falling onto the road. 3. The load must not overhang in the back of the vehicle, and the maximum rear overhang is a 10% when the object can be divided in 2 parts, and 15% when it is an indivisible object.

4. The load maximum high will be 4m (from the ground to the higher point.) 5. Load weight: Check your TV card: MMA means maximum weight you can carry. TARA means the car weight. So if your TARA is for example 1.500 kg, and your MMA is 2.500 kg, you can carry 1000 kg. Remember you have to take into account the all the occupants of the vehicle and their combined weight.

Headlights During Daylight These days we see a lot of cars travelling during the day with their lights on already, but these lights are usually very different to the ones referred to as “headlights”. Since 2011, all new cars and trucks sold in EU were required to have Daytime Running Lights (DRL) installed, which turn

when you must turn your lights on during the day, these locations are indicated by a white pictogram of headlights on a blue circle sign. You will see these as In addition, during the winter months when the sun is lower and visibility can become problematic as a result, the DGT recommend having headlights on during

on automatically with the engine, in accordance with a new European directive designed to improve road safety. The rule also became mandatory for trucks and buses from August 2012. The DRL is a new method of illumination, with low energy consumption, but is not designed to provide additional lighting for the driver, but rather to improve “significantly” the vehicle’s visibility to other road users. Studies on the use of this lighting show, according to the EU executive, road users including pedestrians and cyclists, more clearly detect vehicles equipped with daytime running lights than those who do not have this device. However, the question above refers to traditional headlights, which also provide additional illumination for the driver as well as other road users, and the circumstances they must be turned on during the day. There are certain times and locations

the day to achieve the same increase of visibility as is achieved through the DRL. Under normal circumstances however, there is no mandatory requirement to have your headlights on during the day, and that also applies when driving through road works. Article 104 of the Reglamento General Circulacion, refers to the use of headlights during the day, and explains how you do not have to turn on your lights when there are road repairs on the road, but details the situations when it is compulsory. All vehicles travelling on a reversible lane, sometimes called a bi-directional lane, which can at times be used by traffic in either direction. These sorts of lanes are common near to city centres, where the flow of traffic can alter to give more space for vehicles in one direction, such as towards the centre of the city at the start of a working day, and then away from the city at the end of the day. Although the

accessibility of the lanes will be clearly marked, there is a risk to other road users and so increased illumination is of benefit. A circumstantial additional lane, such as when a lane is created with a series of cones to avoid an obstruction or to improve the traffic flow in one direction. These “circumstantial” lanes are often created at busy holiday times, allowing the road management to create extra lanes to ease congestion at certain times, such as when many people are expected to leave a city to go on holiday at the coast, for example. They are also often used to bypass an obstruction that may pose a problem for the normal flow of traffic, such as a broken down truck that is disabled and cannot move. A lane normally used by traffic in the opposite direction, known as a contraflow. These lanes are frequently used on motorways when traffic is diverted onto a lane on the opposite carriageway for example. As a final note on daytime running lights, not only are they inadequate for illuminating the way ahead, they sometimes cause problems as drivers don´t realise that at night these are switched on and not their headlights. On some vehicles, daytime running lights only exist on the front, and therefore if you forget to switch your headlights on you will have no lights on the back of your vehicle, and you will find it difficult to see. Always check and get used to your vehicle and it´s controls, so that you don´t make the mistake of driving without the correct lights illuminated.

Margin of Error & Speed Cameras The “Margin of Error” is a topic often discussed in internet forums and on social media, with many people wrongly believing that this represents an increase in the maximum permitted speed permitted before fines are issued. The margin of error is an extra buffer on the maximum limit before cameras and radars are activated, but it does not represent or suggest that you are allowed to exceed the limit of the road. The margin of error is a percentage which takes a number of factors into account, including weather conditions, minor faults, and other elements which may influence the receptors and therefore might give an inaccurate reading. You are still not permitted to exceed the speed limit of the road, irrespective of the margin of error applied. The roads with the speed limit between 30km/h and 90 km/h, the drivers can be fined when they drive 8 km/h over the limit. In roads where the speed limit will be 100,110 or 120 km/h, the margin of error will be 7%. 30 km/h......................................38 km/h 40 km/h......................................48 km/h 50 km/h......................................58 km/h 60 km/h......................................68 km/h 70 km/h......................................78 km/h 80 km/h......................................88 km/h 90 km/h......................................98 km/h 100 km/h..................................109 km/h 110 km/h.............................. ...120 km/h 120 km/h...................................131km/h Remember though, this in no way suggests you are permitted to drive at these speeds, rather it is an allowance which takes into account the many different factors which could influence the reading.

The DGT also want to inform all drivers in which roads, there could be mobile radars on its website; www.dgt.es all the information related to this matter. GPS and smartphone apps are able to download this information to help the drivers during their travel. That brings us to another point regarding information relating to the location of cameras and speed traps. A recent law change made it illegal to use certain devices which warn of speed traps and cameras. This caused some confusion with users as there are still many apps and devices which do so. If your app or device warns of fixed camera locations, then this is perfectly acceptable and is legal. What was outlawed was the use of those devices which scan for the presence of radars, thus warning of the location of temporary spots, and those which inhibit the detectors, both of those types of devices are illegal. Similarly, you must not share the location of temporary road blocks or police activities through social media. There are many reasons for this, but it is not permitted.

Tunnels and Undrepasses Traffic laws must be strictly adhered to in tunnels or underpasses on account of the increased risk factors involved in this type of road route, with attention specifically to such matters as using headlights, observing speed and safe distance requirements and not stopping, parking, changing direction or reversing. When approaching most tunnels a blue rectangular sign provides some key information about the tunnel, such as the name and the length, as well as details about emergency help points within. The speed limit in tunnels is controlled with the R-301 mandatory maximum speed limit sign (a red circle with the speed limit in the centre), although many also have an advisory maximum speed limit, indicated by the S-7 blue square with white numbers. Before entering the tunnel we will also see the R-413 sign, a blue circle with a headlight pictogram in the centre, telling us that it is mandatory for us to use headlights at all times. There may be other signs on the entry to tunnels such as the R-306 which prohibits heavy goods vehicles over 3,500 kg from overtaking. Some tunnels have indicators above the carriageway which shows if the lane is open or closed. This is sometimes by means of a standard red or green traffic light and sometimes by means of a green arrow or red cross. These indication signs must be observed at all times. All signs, whether fixed or temporary, visual or audible, must be adhered to at all times. In tunnels or underpasses where the traffic flows in both directions, overtaking is prohibited, unless an additional lane or lanes are provided for this. A safe distance must always be

maintained from the vehicle in front, with a minimum of 100 metres being required between each vehicle, the equivalent of a 4 second gap. Some tunnels have markings on the lanes to assist in keeping this distance. For those with no markings the four second gap can be monitored by counting the time between the vehicle in front of you passes a fixed point and the time it takes your vehicle to pass that same place. In the case of vehicles with a maximum authorized mass exceeding 3,500 kg, the safe distance is increased to at least 150 metres or a minimum interval of at least 6 seconds. Tunnels of some length will have pedestrian exits and help points which are for use in emergencies only. The exits are indicated by the universal emergency exit signs of a pictogram of a figure about to leave a door, and often accompanied by the words “Salida” or “Salida de Emergencia”. The location of the closest emergency point is indicated by arrows on the wall of the tunnel. In the event of an emergency access point being in both directions, often a larger arrow will indicate the direction to the nearest emergency point or exit, which may be in front or behind. In the event of being involved in an emergency in a tunnel, you must: Switch off the engine, switch on emergency hazard lights and leave your vehicle lights on. If the emergency makes it impossible for the vehicle to continue, try to steer the vehicle to the area reserved for emergencies in the direction of travel, such as the hard shoulder if available, or an emergency layby. In the absence of these features, you must try to stop your

vehicle as close as possible to the right side of the edge of the roadway. Use your emergency triangles to indicate your vehicle is creating a hazard. All vehicle occupants must leave the vehicle and proceed to the nearest evacuation emergency exit. In case of fire, the driver must make every effort to ensure vehicles do not block the path of the emergency vehicles attending. Turn off the ignition, leaving the key, and leaving the doors open. All vehicle occupants must leave by the nearest available exit in the opposite direction to the fire. Hopefully our passage through the tunnel will be without incident and as we leave the tunnel, we will see more signs. As well as the S-6 sign indicating the end of the tunnel and subsequent restrictions, we sometimes a change in the speed limit but always a reminder about our headlights. This S-24 sign is different to the R-413 as it is a blue rectangle which displays a pictogram of the headlights along with a question mark. Whereas it is mandatory to switch lights on when entering a tunnel, it is not necessarily mandatory to switch them off, as it could be night time or during a period of poor visibility, so this sign is an informative version reminding us to check if we need to continue with our headlights illuminated.

Thirty seven members and two guests turned out for round one of the President’s trophy. The 1st tee time was at high noon in warm sunshine and a bit of a breeze which died down as the afternoon slipped by. Serena's three main characteristics were present for all to try and master – tight fairways, slick greens and......oh, yes, nearly forgot – plenty of very wet water! Some recent re-jigging of the stroke indices throws up a couple of rarities in an early par 3 being stroke 1 and a par 5 on the back 9 being stroke 18. It's certainly a tricky track but sticking to the 2 words, KEEP LEFT, which are adequate to sum up the day's course management certainly helped to minimise any unscheduled visits to the water. The only 2 “dry” holes, 11 and 12, do give you a chance to become more acquainted with your golf ball but the 13th is far from the doddle that it appears with the wet stuff once again swallowing up its fair share, with the exception of Robin Eastman who holed out his second shot for an eagle 2.

Our thanks to the helpful team at La Serena who contributed to an enjoyable day which saw a wide range of scoring with quite a healthy percentage up in the 30's. The results panned out as follows: The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Marg Birtwistle (32) c/b, 3rd Mick Roscoe (33), 2nd Ken Flaherty (36), and 1st Kyrre Skårsmoen with 39 points winning the President’s Trophy R1 over all on c/b. Silver Category: 4th Ivan Hanak (31), 3rd Peter Girenas (33) c/b, 2nd Roger Webb (33), 1st Paul Kelsall (35). Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Football is a funny old game. By being released from the shadow of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal set about Crystal Palace as if someone had drugged them and told them they were Manchester City in the opening 20 minutes. Sanchez has swapped the Emirates for Old Trafford where, no doubt, he will go on to be one of the finest second fullbacks Manchester United have ever seen. Nacho Monreal managed to do more in 33

minutes than Sanchez had managed all season, scoring and assisting twice as the Gunners sped to a 4-0 lead. Could this be the sign that Arsenal are now free and will go on the kind of run that sees them trouble the top four? Probably not, but if Wenger can unlock the Mkhi that wowed

everyone at Dortmund then you never know. And if they can add Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the squad it will be exciting as they’ll have painted the front of their house all pretty whilst the petty thieves keep breaking in round the back. As for Palace, Hodgson will no doubt shrug his shoulders, be polite and get back down to drilling “team shape” on Monday morning. If I just tell you the score between Burnley and Manchester United at Turf Moor was 1-0 to United, you can probably guess what type of game it was. If I then throw in the fact that Phil Jones, yes really, was man-of-thematch your initial guess was probably bang on. If anyone thinks the addition of the Chilean is suddenly going to make Jose Mourinho the great entertainer, think again. I know, Burnley “are tough to beat ©“ but even so. And he’s going to get a new contract which, hopefully, just means he gets a bigger pay-off in late September after it is clear City have taken football to yet another level at the start of next season.Oh, Anthony Martial scored the winner again but that still won’t make Jose like him. Chelsea had looked pretty lost in recent weeks and not just because of their mid-week public chase of Andy Carroll, who then managed to get injured reading the newspaper reports that Chelsea wanted to sign him, and Peter Crouch who must have assumed he was on some kind of reality TV show, especially when Stoke asked for £15m. Alvaro Morata’s confidence has fallen as quickly as the

three Blues booked for diving against Norwich and Conte has been looking more and more agitated. Yet, in the opening six minutes against Brighton, everything came back together and Chelsea were leading 2-0. The second goal was the kind of goal City have scored plenty of this season, meaning it was rather good, and with Chelsea winning 4-0 they are making it clear that they do not plan to be the topfour fall guys. The surprising statistic post-match was not that Eden Hazard had been subbed yet again, it was the fact that Chelsea are now unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions. Conte wants to leave on a high, clearly. In shock news, Harry Kane missed a great chance to win the match at Southampton. Tottenham’s main man had already scored, obviously, to equalise a fine goal for Southampton by Spurs’ centre-back Davinson Sanchez, steering it in on the move from a tight angle. The dropped points mean Tottenham trail Liverpool by two points before the Reds no doubt go and put Swansea to the sword on Monday night. Another week in the Newcastle United soap opera has passed with Mike Ashley claiming that Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover is off and has been “a complete waste of time” which is kinda how most Newcastle fans view big Mike’s tenure. Once more Rafa sent his Championship quality side out knowing what was likely to happen next and he was right. Sergio Aguero netted all three for Pep’s men but the goal of the game actually came from

a fine finish by Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy. Mike Ashley has no doubt noted that Murphy’s value will have risen thanks to the little run and dink over Ederson, so if anyone fancies themselves a talented young Englishman then he is almost certainly for sale at a profit. Rafa Benitez has said he needs “three or four” new signings by the end of January knowing full well he’ll probably get one and he’ll be from Aston Villa’s reserves or somewhere equally dreadful. The previous Everton manager wasn’t a fan of Oumar Niasse either, yet the Senegalese scored a few for Koeman just to make the Dutchman look silly. Sam Allardyce had splashed nearly £50m on two attacking players in Tosun and Theo Walcott to try and help Everton at the very least get a shot on target in January, but once again it was the very-much-up-forsale Niasse who scored another important goal for the Toffees. This goal nabbed them a draw with West Bromwich Albion and the Goodison Park natives are already starting to get a little restless watching Allardyce’s side create minimal chances. Mind you, what did they expect when the gaffer comes out every week saying the team “needs to be more boring”. Last Monday we were all laughing at Stoke City who appeared to have drawn their appointed their new manager by giving away raffle tickets. Paul Lambert had number 16 which was ironic, as that was exactly his place on Peter Coates handwritten list

of “people I’d like to give the job to in preference order”. Lambert, like most out-of-work managers who start to think they’ll never get another chance (the ones that are the total opposite to the likes of Alan Pardew for example), put his ego to one side and expressed his gratitude for getting the gig. Lambert got a little lucky with Huddersfield Town being the visitors but Stoke looked organised, committed and did not completely abandon any moments of creativity as Shaqiri’s assist for the second was lovely. Lambert celebrated with a level of passion that I presume Sky Sports will be turning into an advert at some point. Oh, he’s not Italian so they won’t? OK then, It finally became clear that Marco Silva was living on a different planet to the Watford board. Leicester City heaped further misery on Watford as they beat them 2-0 without so much as seeing Mahrez break sweat and Silva insisted his job was not in danger. Marco, we have been here many times before you. Watford have an excellent start to the season, check. Manager gets linked to bigger jobs, check. Watford players think the season’s work is done by midDecember, check. Watford start tumble towards the relegation zone, check. Manager’s great start to the season gets completely forgotten and he gets the sack. Get on the phone to AC Milan, Marco. That’s the job for you. I’m sure Big Sam is raising a pint of wine in your honour right now. Watford’s new man? Javi Gracia. Google will be your friend here.

Your Week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Hang on, I thought Andrew Murray was too injured to play tennis at the moment? It says here that there is a Brit in the quarter finals of the Australian Open. It’s not Johanna Konta, she fell days ago. It’s definitely not Tim Henman, he retired years ago. And, of course, it’s not Andy Murray as he is still injured. Well done Kyle Edmund for British tennis followers might even recognise you in the Mercadona if found yourself on the Costas after the week you’ve had. Who’d have thought a lad from Yorkshire could cope so well in the sun? I do wonder what might have happened in the Ashes if England had treated the Test matches with the same disdain and approach that they treat ODIs. Joss Buttler hit one of his slower ODI hundreds, taking 83 balls to put England in a commanding position against the Aussies. England went on to defend the lead and win by 16 runs, meaning they can now not be caught in the series. With players like Buttler, Roy and Hales smashing the ball all around the park it does beg the question of how much worse could it have been for the Test side if they’d been coming out to bat ahead of Stoneman, Vince and Ali. And don’t even get me started on Ben Stokes being available now he has been charged. Joseph Parker has been foolish enough to upset Anthony Joshua, suggesting he has a glass jaw and is the “king of steroids”. Granted, Parker can probably handed himself but surely giving any massive guy who hits like a sledgehammer any reason to want to hit you harder is a bad thing?

La Siesta Bowls Club With torrential overnight rain no matches to report on in the SABA Enterprise League as the rink at La Siesta was waterlogged in the morning and as the rain continued until lunchtime and it was still not in a condition to enable afternoon play. In the The Fed 4’s the Parakeets kept up their good start with a win on two of the three rinks away at Montemar against the Lords.Winners for La Siesta were Pat and Trish Reilly with Florence and Mike Edwards 26-11 and Derek Smith,Tony Campbell,Irene Mangan and Alex Morrice winning 14-11.The overall shots margin being 51-40 to La Siesta, so six points to the Parakeets. The Hoopoes started their campaign with a loss on all 3 rinks away at Greenlands losing by 72 shots to 40. The Winter League team had a disappointing match at home to local neighbours and could not repeat their away victory of the beginning of the season losing all rinks with the shots

margin being 102 shots to 52. The Blues entertained San Luis Tigers and lost by 124 shots to 93 winning on two rinks.Winners for the Blues were Bill and Sue Jordan with John Ball 21-15 and Jo Elkin with Mike and Florence Edwards by 16-15.So 4 points to the Blues and 10 to the Tigers. The Golds travelled to Montemar Toreadors and kept up their winning form with a narrow 8 points to 6 win in a match played in a wonderful friendly spirit. It is unfortunate that Montemar are struggling with players with illness at present and we wish them a better situation shortly. The overall shots were close until the final couple of ends but La Siesta managed to come out best by 103 shots to 91.Winning rinks for La Siesta were Barbara Cooper, Tony Campbell and Johnnie Ryder 25-2, Ken Stringfellow,Sid Gallup and Alan Mawer 17-7 and Wendy Ralph,Trish Reilly and Gordon Dall 20-17.

Las Ramblas Social Club Monday we had some much needed rain so needless to say no golf was played. Wednesday we played round 1 of 6 of the Medal Competition and the results were as follows: 1st Ken Robertson 71, 2nd Geoff Biggerstaff 73, 3rd John Conway 74, 4th Benedicte Kruse 75, 5th Olga Douglas 76, 6th Ann Marie Weisheit 77. 2´s Club: Liz Robertson, Bryan Neal and Tom Hardie. Friday we played a “Waltzer” 123, and

the winners with a score of 81pts were Geoff Biggerstaf (Again!) Benedicte Kruse, John Conway and Heinz Lie. Mike Mahony

The Med Bar Golf Society On a lovely winters morning off we headed to the lovely course of Font De Llop. Most members know that this course can be quite cold at this time of the year if the wind gets up, so most members were dressed for the occasion, with only one member wearing shorts! Only one member could not turn up because of the dreaded Spanish cold that is going around at the moment, so after a bit of juggling around with the groupings, off we went. The course was in a really good condition, trouble was that they were spraying green dye on certain areas and forgot to turn of the spray when passing some of our members. Buggies and clothing ended up with green speckles all over, hopefully it will wash out of the clothing. Results for this outing: Gold and overall winner with 36 points was Andy Trefry Silver division winner with 30 points Buck Taylor Nearest the pins on par 3’s: Bill Martin, Ray Muttock, Andy Trefry and 2 new members Alex Bolton & Eric Owens
