Twelve-year-old rescued after falling down ravine
A dramatic rescue operation was put into practice on Sunday after the emergency services received a report that a minor had fallen into a ravine. The 12-year-old had to be rescued by firefighters after slipping whilst descending the Sanes Ravine in the Orihuela district of La Aparecida. The child is believed to have been canyoning from a height of about 5 meters when she fell and, as a consequence suffered a number of traumatic injuries. However, medics at the scene reported that luckily there were no open fractures to her arms or legs. The Provincial Fire Consortium activated its rescue protocol and a helicopter with the mountain rescue group (GER) was sent immediately to the scene of the accident. It was decided that although there is a path leading to the area, it was not accessible to ambulance
crews. Once there, the GER descended with a rescue doctor to give emergency medical attention to the little girl. The rescuers and medics were able to stabilise the child and take her back to the helicopter. She was then moved to a nearby area in La Aparecida where the helicopter was able to land safely with professionals on board ready to continue her care at the Alpha 09 medical facility. From that point, the helicopter landed at the Alicante Firefighters heliport at 6:20pm, where an ambulance was waiting for the girl be taken to hospital. In total, a senior command unit, a heavy rural truck from the Orihuela fire station, a rescue helicopter plus the mountain rescue group were all mobilised. Thanks to the speedy response and the expert care the child was given, it is believed she will make a full recovery.
