British woman killed by partner in Orihuela Costa
In a crime that has shocked the local community, a 76-year-old British woman lost her life in her home in Orihuela Costa, allegedly at the hands of her partner. The tragic event unfolded on Friday morning (15th September), when authorities were
alerted at 7.40am. When police arrived at the scene they found the body of a woman, which had suffered stab wounds. A knife was found near the body. The victims 82-year-old Norwegian partner, who was in the house when
the police arrived, was arrested for the crime. The incident, the second murder attributed to gender violence in the area this year, has prompted local authorities to take swift action. Following the arrest, the Head of the Court of Instruction number 2 of Orihuela, presiding over the matter, ruled on Saturday that the accused be remanded into provisional custody without the option of bail. This decision was made to ensure he remains in custody during the ongoing investigation. The couple had no prior documented history of complaints or altercations, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community has initiated proceedings, initially categorising the case as a murder, with the possibility of reclassification pending further evidence.
Civil Guard sources have indicated that the victim’s injuries suggest a knife attack and authorities are workin diligently to unravel the full scope of the tragedy. In a bid to ensure an unbiased and thorough investigation, the presiding judge has opted to remove herself in favour of the Orihuela Violence Against Women Court. This specialised court already has the facts related to the events and will continue to spearhead the inquiry. This grim incident is not isolated. If confirmed as a case of gender violence, it would be the second fatality in Orihuela Costa within just six months, highlighting a concerning trend. The first incident also resulted in the death of a British woman, allegedly at the hands of her husband in March. In that case the man was registered on the VioGen database following an earlier attack on his wife.
In the wider context of the Valencian Community, this would be the fourth such fatality, and the forty-fifth in Spain for the year 2023. These distressing figures underscore the pressing need for continued efforts to address and prevent gender-based violence within society. The community is left in mourning as they come to terms with this devastating loss. As the investigation progresses, the hope remains that justice will be served for the victim and her grieving loved ones.
