New waste container system for Orihuela Costa

The Orihuela City Council has begun to implement a new container system in Orihuela Costa, following a detailed technical study. This report has allowed for a precise analysis of the area’s current situation and the definition of an action plan tailored to the areas current

and future needs. The proposal is based on a comprehensive review of the waste collection system, taking into account factors such as seasonal population growth, urban morphology, and the need to meet environmental objectives set by regional,

national, and European regulations. The technical study carried out by the Department of Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste (MSW) in the Orihuela Costa area aims primarily to improve the efficiency of the waste collection system, adapting it to the population, urban, and environmental conditions of the coast. The main objectives have been defined as: ensuring a uniform distribution of containers, ensuring their presence in all residential areas and areas close to homes; optimising collection routes and the municipal resources employed, improving service efficiency and reducing costs associated with its provision;

adapting container capacity to the actual volume of waste generated, especially during months with greater seasonal pressure, when the population increases; and progressively incorporating organic waste into selective collection, complying with current regulatory requirements and reinforcing the municipality’s environmental commitment. This study also establishes the promotion of waste separation at source through the implementation of complete collection islands that facilitate the correct classification of the different waste categories for people. In addition, the collection system has been standardised, prioritizing side-

loading containers, which are more efficient and modern. The Councillor for Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste, Rocío Ortuño, emphasised the importance of this advance for the coast with “the new container provides a leap in quality in waste collection, adapting the service to the reality of Orihuela Costa,” concluded the councillor, who noted that in recent months the City Council has acquired more than 1,600 containers.
