‘Tropical’ nights continue
if you’re one of the many people that have had a hard time sleeping this week because of the heat, you’re not alone. the Alicante coastline has experienced unseasonably high nighttime temperatures with the mercury remaining above 20 degrees at night all week. these so-called tropical nights are not usual for this time of year. A tropical night is one in which minimum temperatures do not fall below
20ºc, according to the climatological definition by spain’s Meteorological Agency (AeMet). this level of heat at night “is not normal”, confirms the professor of regional Geographic Analysis and director of the climatology Laboratory of the University of Alicante, Jorge olcina. however, this situation only confirms a trend that has been recorded since 2010 of a notable increase in the
number tropical nights per year. olcina has assured that we will finish out the year with over 110 tropical nights. “this is a very striking fact because it shows the prolongation of the summer heat towards spring and autumn”, explained the professor. A key that explains this phenomenon, in addition to the arrival of air from
north Africa, saharan air, is the heat accumulated in the Mediterranean seawater, which at this time of year is still above 24ºc. “this temperature is also quite abnormal, but it is a trend that is also being registered in the last decade in the temperature of the seawater off the coast of Alicante”, added olcina. the transition from summer to
autumn is increasingly drawn out and the warm weather is lasting later into the year, including at night time, as we have seen this week. in recent years we have experienced tropical nights here and there in october and even in november. however, this last week is being described by weather experts as “quite exceptional” due to several consecutive days of minimum nighttime temperatures above 20ºc in much of the Alicante coast. For those who are looking forward to putting on their winter pyjamas, the director of the UA climatology Laboratory advises not to get your hopes up just yet: “there are no sudden changes in the weather in the remainder of the month of october. on the contrary, we are going to continue with a trend of anticyclonic days and very pleasant weather”. in fact, the seasonal models are indicating an autumn with temperatures above normal, as we are currently experiencing, followed by a mild winter.
